It was honestly hard to pick a favorite because everything was so delicious, but if I had to choose, the Jägerschnitzel absolutely stole the show! For dessert, we had the freshly baked apple strudel, and it was the perfect ending to an incredible meal. You could taste how fresh everything was--from the flaky, buttery pastry to the warm apples and even the homemade whipped cream. It was absolutely delicious. This is a great spot whether you're dining as a couple or with a larger group. If you're planning to come with more than five people, I'd recommend calling ahead to see if they can accommodate your party with a reservation. The owner's daughter Sarah runs the kitchen. My husband had a pork tenderloin schnitzel "Vienna style" ($20) and I had a jaegerschnizel with mushroom gravy ($20) and both were excellent. We split the potato pancakes (two with sour cream and apple sauce, $12) which were served crispy but tasty. They had a nice German beer and wine list. She let us stay until 3:30pm on our day of "check-out". We walked a block to dinner at Cafe les Jumelles (see my review), but when the weather is good you should bring groceries and cook a meal at home, and eat under the stars outside. We probably wouldn't have even seen her if we had not gone out of our way. Monte Rio is cute, quaint, walkable little town. That said, it has plenty of food/resturants and a crazy little local dive bar and movie theatre right nearby. Guerneville (the main little town in Russian River) is also only about 4 miles away and includes more options (a small brewery, sporting options, Armstrong Redwoods, a bookstore, lots of restaurants, etc.) The entire area is a great escape from the city and is only about 1 1/2 hours away! And I would definitely recommend the Garden Cottage Duo over a nearby hotel or inn.

We stayed in the glamping tents (all the rooms were booked, so we decided to give them a chance!). The tent was nice and cozy with a heating blanket on the bed in case it gets cold, and a fan in case it gets hot. They provide locks for you to lock the tent when you leave. The tent has electricity, plug ins for your chargers or blow dryer, etc., clean outdoor showers, flush toilets, and sinks. The water in the shower got nice and warm. The care that they put into this place is incredible. Lighted votive candles in glass lanterns and string lights illuminated every night, continental breakfast included in your stay and brought to you at the time of your choosing every morning, a welcome cocktail when you check in, complementary bikes that you can ride around town, fire pits, yoga "studio", and the pool and spa with the honor bar that are open 24/7. We really enjoyed our stay here. We had plans for our anniversary while we were there, but I would like go back to simply enjoy the amenities next time! Unfortunately we could hear the people on the other side of the wall whenever they were talking (and unfortunately they were talking very early in the morning), so keep that in mind if you're sensitive to noise and booking a studio. Right outside our cottage was the fire pit, which was lovely in the evening with supplies for s'mores! We loved how dog-friendly this property was. There was a dedicated pet relief area that was fully fenced off. The continental breakfast starts at 8:30 and has a decent selection. Check-in and check out process was easy. Parking was right outside the gate along the property. We would stay here again.

The water in both champagne and beauty baths are slightly warmer but not hot, so when you get out of them and feel cold, they have an hot pool just nearby both! After spending 2 hours here, my body was so relaxed! The office charges a deposit before you go in and then based on the time spent, they charge you at the end when you are leaving.

I attribute the somewhat mediocre experience to her absence and I am sure that our experience would have been different if the family would not have been out of town during our visit. I have to echo the two other posters in regards to the rooms and surroundings of the Avalon Bed & Breakfast. The room we stayed in was in impeccable condition, the picturesque surroundings and tranquility we got to enjoy on the patio were perfect, except for the above mentioned problems. That's the sole reason I can't give it 5 stars. However, Hilary has since offered us a free night at her establishment, which is a nice way of trying to remedy our experience.
