We ordered several appetizers to share; bang bang shrimp (yummy), soup dumplings (yummy), spinach and artichoke dip (mediocre - have had better), sweet potato and regular fries plus dips (both very good) and dragon boat lettuce wraps (the crispy noodle and chicken with hoisin sauce and cashews was delicious and my favourite but the lettuce leaves had spoiled spots and seemed not to be thoroughly washed). I took the liberty of cleaning the lettuce before eating it. We also received dirty plates but bringing this to our server's attention quickly remedied the problem. Besides these minute concerns, the food and service and company were great! The patio filled up quite fast shortly after we placed our order and received our food. Either we were all hungry, or there was a strange delay because it felt like the longest time before we got our food. Once arrived, my mushroom and cheese omelette was good but nothing special. Immaculate vibe, but the food was always just ok, and I remembered it was always expensive. This time I got the chicken waffle. It's a sweet waffle topped with one fried chicken thigh & sweet tangy gochujang and a fried egg. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but I wouldn't say it was a big portion like what you'd get from a traditional diner place. It was 24 dollars - so over 30 dollars after tax and tips. It's kinda wild just to think about it... My partner got the Electric Benny - same thing, it was a lot pricier than other diners with the same amount of food. I think 25 dollars for 2 eggs, a slice of fried French toast and some avocado & home fries was pricy. In addition, she got drip coffee on the side which was almost like 6 dollars after tax - that's a crazy price for diner drip coffee. Her basic, mid diner breakfast meal with a moderate portion size came down to almost 35 dollars. To me that's unacceptable. The service was fine. I then considered it for the following day so that it would act as breakfast and lunch ... an early lunch. The name was interesting, but I didn't ask about its etymology. Portugal has a strong symbolic relationship with roosters and hydrangeas, but I was interested in eating and moving along up the QEW toward Toronto proper. Nonetheless, it's a smaller cafe' behind a brick storefront that is roomy inside. I did not want a big meal and I did not want Canadian food. I selected a fish sandwich, which was a good sized filet. It worked very well for what I needed. I washed it down with a bottle of Sumol. And, on the way out, I added an impulse purchase - a pastel de nata - which was gone in a flash. It was all good. The proprietress of the restaurant was on hand, took my order, and was the server. She was very pleasant. The prices seemed fair. Hamilton is a surprisingly large city, with about 3/4 of a million inhabitants. While it sits in the kink in the "Golden Horseshoe," its downtown core sits inward from the lake. And, in between the lake and downtown, there are residential neighborhoods and small businesses. The area changes very quickly, with some parts being frayed and others being gentrified. The Little Grasshopper Cafe' is in a nice enough area and street parking can be found very close to the restaurant. Additionally, it has a somewhat hippie-dippy mural on the exterior that will also help you locate it. I would return, but I think it would also make a great place for morning coffee and an omelette or pastries.
