I was really looking forward to trying out Aberdeen Tavern as my sister said it was good. We went on a steak Sunday...the only day they theme is steak oriented, although there were also non steak dishes. The complementary bread was amazing. The slices were soft, and addictive. I also ordered Mexican Street Corn that was sweet and spicy at the same time. It was good. For the steak, I ordered a medium rare tenderloin, which was cooked to the right temperature. However the seasoning was basic. The green peppercorn jus that came with the steak was salty. The same went for the Mac and cheese. That was disappointing. Eggs Benedict didn't disappoint, tofu eggs would be better with keeping thetoast on the side to keep it crispy and a pickled onion and or chutney might be a nice add to this dish. My family and I went from looking forward to a Friday dinner at Aberdeen Tavern, previously a Hamilton staple, to us no longer wanting ever to consider patronizing this restaurant. We arrived around 6:30 and even with low numbers at the restaurant we had slow service throughout. Once we finally received our mains the steaks for my wife and I, ordered medium rare, was extremely charred and well done inside. It was taken away once we were able to flag down a waiter, but then proceeded to wait about 30 minutes and the new plates still weren't ready. At this point 8:20, I was done waiting and paid the bill. To my surprise, there was no mention of any reduction or removal of these poor meals. The staff avoided us while we were waiting for the replacement and barely made eye contact as they said sorry and we left. Goodbye Aberdeen Tavern, we've seen the last of you. read more

First time visiting this restaurant and it was fabulous. Me and my party sat on the patio which was lovely especially when the lights came on. I tried three different drinks and the Golden Hour was my favourite! The corn fritters were the best appetizer we had followed by the charcuterie. We heard the hummus was so good. But it was our least favourite item. It was different, it was like a pumpkin hummus. But to be honest if that is the worst thing on the menu and it wasn't bad... you know the food is really good. Got my main course I had the Aberdeen burger which was great and I appreciate that they cook it medium. Our wait staff was great. I have zero complaints about this place. I had heard that Aberdeen tavern was the best place to go to for brunch and boy do I agree. Upon arriving it was pretty busy and I had not made reservations but thankfully I was with a friend so we got placed at a side table. We decided to split the Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast along with some Home fries. The cheesecake French toast was absolute heavenly, every bite was perfect and it wasn't too sweet. Aberdeen Tavern has always been on my Yelp or IG but I was always too lazy to actually make the trek across town to try it. However, as I got into my brunch phase it definitely looked promising. At my first visit I was served by Des and she was terrific. She suggested items on the menu and they turned out amazing. I got the Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast. This is a great way to start off your morning! However, it does get really sweet so I suggest splitting with someone as you really CANNOT finish the whole thing solo. My friend got one of their sandwiches and she LOVED IT. She's been asking me to go back ever since. On my 2nd visit. I got the the French Toast a second time and shared a Turkey Benny (that was their weekend special then) with my boyfriend. Both dishes were amazing and our server who worked the bar while we ate was amazing. Overall, this is a great place to try for brunch. I've only been to brunch at Aberdeen so far but the thing I love about it is the service. Their servers are super attentive and nice. They were kind enough to recommend some options and they were always around to fill a glass of water or something stronger. We had the cheesecake french toast and Mississippi bennys. Both were amazing. The french toast was a bit dryer than I expected but still super fluffy and not too sweet. The highlight of the brunch however, was definitely their warm scone and butter. I still dream about that thing at night sometimes. I loved their friendly staff and will definitely be coming back for their rather affordable brunch. Overall the vibe of Aberdeen is just cozy and comfortable. It feels like you're sitting in a nicer version of your own living room and people of all ages can come and eat here. And speaking of prices, if I were the dumb American that our waiter thought I was, I would have paid $90 American plus tip - for a brunch for two that was actually $67 American dollars. Why? Because Mr. Waiter is running a scam. When he brought my bill, I had planned to pay cash, and I informed him that I had American money. He told me that they didn't do exchanges and the bill would still be $90 American - as if it were equal. Umm, what? My friend and I just looked at him confused, and because I'm not a frequent traveler to Canada and thought that maybe he was right, I didn't want to argue without knowing for sure. I almost gave this fool $90 American, but then I realized that if I used my credit card, my bank would automatically make the exchange (and it did - I was charged $67). He didn't look happy when I switched gears and handed over my card, and now I know why. It was after I came home to Detroit and shared my story with my Canadian coworkers - they all laughed and said that this guy is running a game on unwitting tourists - that I realized that I was right in using my credit card. I don't remember the guy's name, but he had brown hair, and mustache/beard. We were there at 1015am on June 1st, 2019. In case management is reading this, you might want to check your staff. The pork sandwich I split with my friend, was also retry good. I really enjoyed lunch here, and would give it 4-5 stars. The brunch, however, was underwhelming. My date and I got two dishes, and neither stood out as very good. We got the tostada rancheros (poached egg) and the BBQ tofu scramble. The prices weren't bad, and the experience was good, so I would give brunch here 2.5 stars overall. As someone who has worked in the kitchen there all I'll say is this... If you "valued customers" so they say... Saw the kitchen and the prep area.. unlabeled containers no date or product info. Unsafe storage of food. Cooked meats next to raw and meat just sitting openly unwrapped in the fridge. Meat being marinated in open top bins or just a thin piece of plastic wrap poorly covering container's sitting on the ground in the walk in fridge not even raised on milk crates. (The mice are more then pleased about this) Chicken being processed already starting to spoil (giving off rotten egg smell). The beef grilled cheese sometimes the meat is being served past a week and a half old I had to hold my breath when ever I dealt with either. Poor management and it's clear it flows to the kitchen. I could keep going on but the list would be endless. O one more thing. Soups instead of tossing the last unused portion they will serve it till it is gone bad or not. (Heat kills everything right? Ahh hech let's serve the last 2 litres of the week and a half old soup) If they think it's okay they will just add new ingredients to the old and call it the soup of the day. Misleading... it's the soup from last week that we added ingredients to today. You make your judgement. The only time I ever ate anything from there was when my hands prepared it fresh otherwise I was weary being that the majority of things are unlabeled. Customers deserve to know their food is being prepared proper right from the start using proper protocol which is definately not the case. You all have the right to inquire and even see where and how your food is being prepared. Ask for a tour of the kitchen and fridges no need to go down to the prep hall seeing as the front of house kitchen will be a good indicator of how poor a state the downstairs is aswell. With a group of family and friends, we spent Monday night at Aberdeen Tavern and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. Rarely when dining out is every course, every choice as expected or better. The exception was with Aberdeen Tavern. Across our 10 guests, we shared several starters and drinks. Each and everything we tried was agreeably sensational. From the goat cheese and jalapeno croquettes to the seared pork belly and calamari, each plate was excellent. Our mains were equally enjoyable with the braised beef, salmon and meatloaf standing out and each worth of a fuss. While we have been fortunate enough to have been part of several memorable dining experiences, I can't recall a time when every dish was so completely enjoyed. A truly fantastic evening. read more

I was so lucky to have the opportunity to come here with my research team for dinner. We reserved the room upstairs, so we had the entire room and a giant table to ourselves. With an option of the shrimp & avocado, caesar salad and buffalo mozarella crostini, I just had to order the Shrimp & Avocado as my appetizer, which includes: avocado, herb vinaigrette, pickled celery and toasted panko ($15). They give you half an avocado heaped with a generous portion of shrimp on top. It was a refreshing but satisfying opener to a great meal. For the entree I ordered pan seared steelhead trout, which includes: heirloom carrots, grapes, avocado purée, watercress, cilantro yogurt, cumin vinaigrette ($25). The trout was perfectly cooked, tender, flaky and flavorful. I loved the accompanying avocado puree and the carrots. This was a great dish and a must-order for people who like trout. For the dessert I ordered the white chocolate cheesecake which comes with blueberry compote, lemon curd and brown butter graham crumbs ($10), based on the suggestion of our server. This was probably some of the best cheesecake I've ever had, and beautifully presented. My meal was really amazing, I would love to come back here for brunch. Food: -Fish Tacos: such freshness in the ingredients! I wouldn't order this dish, though, because it is pricey for what you get: two tacos on a plate. Each taco contains a piece of deep fried cod and assorted veggies to be wrapped in two small orange-coloured tortillas. -Lamb Bolognese Orecchiette: amazing pasta! This dish was served very hot. That's how I like my food. I usually like pastas that don't use a tomato sauce, yet found this dish excellent. I liked the taste and texture of smoked ricotta. -Roasted Mushroom Pappardelle: I got to sample this dish thanks to my significant other. It was my first time trying pappardelle pasta and I really liked it. It worked very well with the mushroom and whatever sauce that was used in the pasta. Service: -Our waitress was professional and efficient. She came by often to fill our glasses with water and to ask how our food tasted. One thing I found a little strange and unnecessary was she asked me, "are you still working on that?" She seemed so eager to clear away when my plate still had plenty of pasta in it. I'll tell you if I need to have my food packed to go. Other: -Warm, intimate atmosphere. They do light a small candle on each table, which is great for a romantic dinner atmosphere. There are portrait paintings hanging on the walls and this reminded me of eating in places like UofT dining halls. This place was really fantastic. We came here for an end of year meeting. The atmosphere is cheerful while maintaining the historic feel. We split the buffalo mozzarella crostini and the meat, cheese and pickles. They were decently sized starters I had the lamb orechiette, which was well seasoned, not too fatty and had a nice balance between the gamey lamb and tomato-y notes. For dessert, I split the Earl Grey crème brûlée, which was really perfectly sweet and you could really taste the Earl Grey, unlike many tea-flavoured dishes where it is lost. To be honest, the bread that came with the meat cheese and pickles and the crostini were both pretty disappointing - it was dry and flavourless, and did not act as a good base. That would be the only real complaint I had with the meal since I would expect a restaurant of this quality in other areas to have decent bread at the very least. The portion size was adequate but not overly generous. I would say most people would need to order two things off the menu. The wait staff were friendly and attentive, and they came frequently to refill water and coffee. Decor was beautiful - it had a cozy, date-night type of vibe. Got the Mississippi Benny ($15) with home fries, which had a really nice smoky pulled pork on top a generous portion of cornbread with sweet jalapeños on top. The flavours were great! I wasn't a very big fan of their coffee ($3.25); I found it to taste a little too sour, but it should be alright if you don't take it black like I did. The winter eats menu was a great deal, it had some really good options - starter, entree, dessert were all large portions (unlike what you experience with winterlicious in Toronto). From this menu the jalapeno/cheese croquettes were delish and the iceberg salad tasty. Hubby said the pork chop was excellent as was the chicken cacciatiore. The scallop/mushroom risotto was very good (5 large scallops) if you love mushrooms, the pasta with shrimp was good, spicy as noted on the menu. Service was attentive. My first time at the Aberdeen Tavern and I have to say that this is not your average "Tavern". The food was excellent and the atmosphere is spectacular, I really enjoyed the decor. If I can suggest to start with the Caesar Salad you won't be disappointed. Great flavour and if you like bacon as I do you'll definitely find it memorable. I'd also suggest paying attention to the specials because the chef creates a truly enjoyable entree. Hamilton. Who knew. Actually, a lot of people know. I have a handful of friends who just can't handle the idea of suburbia nor the downtown housing costs, to they've taken refuge in the Hammer. A happening little city in its own right an hour from the big smoke. I texted one of these cool cats on my way home from Niagara Falls to ask for a restaurant recommendation. They had three or four, but Aberdeen was by far their favourite, for a great reason. It's fucking awesome. They were full inside with reservations, but we were pretty early and the patio is first come first serve. We really enjoyed their incredibly well-curated little leather menus. I had their corn soup and a big salad, while my dining companions had their burger and truffle frites and an angel hair pasta. Seriously great food. In some ways, I think this is what Toronto is missing these days. Everything has a cool gimmick attached to it to get attention, and this place is just what it is: a pretty restaurant with nice servers and terrific food... This being said, I won't be leaving my downtown hovel anytime soon. read more

This place has exactly the kind of brunch food I've been looking for in the area: creative, good flavours, and nice presentation! I was really impressed with my tostada rancheros (two poached eggs and black beans on tostadas with guacamole and lime crema with a side of home fries). The flavours were delicious and everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The prices are obviously a little higher than your typical brunch restaurant, but I'd say it's worth it.
