A friend brought me here for the first time. Hadn't heard of the restaurant prior to our visit but then again, I'm hardly in Hamilton. It had rained the day we went and while indoor dining was bustling, we chose to sit outside on the patio, which was empty on arrival. Tables and chairs were wet but the weather changed and the sun shone again, drying up the area. We ordered several appetizers to share; bang bang shrimp (yummy), soup dumplings (yummy), spinach and artichoke dip (mediocre - have had better), sweet potato and regular fries plus dips (both very good) and dragon boat lettuce wraps (the crispy noodle and chicken with hoisin sauce and cashews was delicious and my favourite but the lettuce leaves had spoiled spots and seemed not to be thoroughly washed). I took the liberty of cleaning the lettuce before eating it. We also received dirty plates but bringing this to our server's attention quickly remedied the problem. Besides these minute concerns, the food and service and company were great! The patio filled up quite fast shortly after we placed our order and received our food. I ended up ordering lots of things to share - everything that sounded good to me. I was a little worried about the eclectic range of flavors but it somehow worked and came together. We started with margaritas from the fancy cocktail kit. Then shared dragon boat lettuce wraps, spicy tuna poke bowl, and fish tacos, asparagus, and few bites of poutine. Lastly we shared 1/2 of the French dip sandwich as "our main." Had to save the cheesecake for another time. So flavorful and delicious!! Everything was top notch. Some favorite bites included putting the poke bowl filling into a lettuce wrap. We loved every bite. Would definitely order again! Fun mix of food and great to have some leftovers. Yesterday was our first time at State and Main, for dinner. It was a great experience all around. Our waiter was patient and knowledgeable, he was efficient and treated us like we were his only customers. The food was fresh, tasty and well portioned. Went here last night for dinner. It was 7:00pm on a Friday and it was pretty busy. They told us 30 minutes for a table for two. We were seated within 20. I like the decor with modern metal and wood, but there are not a lot of booths, and the place is very open. It's basically two rooms, the bar and the dining room. Because of the open environment it is very noisy, this is not the best place to have a conversation with someone. Our waitress greeted us and was very friendly. She recommended some drinks and told us the soup of the day. The menu has lots of options, entrees run $15 and up. We ordered the cheeseburger and the steak salad. It took them almost 30 minutes to bring the food to our table, that's a long time for basic dishes. The food must have been sitting as both dishes were hardly warm. There was a good amount of steak on the salad and the blue cheese dressing was tasty. The steak tasted a bit plain. The mushrooms on it were very tasty. My burger was a good size and tasted good, I just wish it was hot instead of cold. My cilantro coleslaw was a nice refreshing taste. The side greens were basic but good. Not sure if I would come back here for dinner given the noise level, though its a cool place to grab a drink. read more

I came back to State & Main after a couple of years mainly because I received an Ultimate Dining Gift Card. I made reservations online but my friends decided to crash my date night so I called ahead to let the restaurant know there would be more people than expected. They told me it was busy but they'd try to fit me in. I got to the restaurant and it was half full (??? lol). AMBIANCE: 4/5 State & Main remains one of the best places in terms of atmosphere. The restaurant is really well decorated with a bench that wraps around the restaurant and high tables. The vibe is a little rustic from all the wood but also very chic. There are TVs plastered on all the walls set to different sports channels. Pictures are hard here because the lighting is pretty dim. FOOD: 3/5 We ordered: 1. Dragon Boat Wraps: This is an asian styled wrap with lettuce acting as the wrap and the filling was chicken, chow mein noodles, veggies all mixed in with hosein sauce. I didn't like the wraps as it was super saucy and I didn't like the sauce. They do give you a decent portion though 2. Chicken Wings: Salt & Pepper chicken wings were okay. The wings were somewhat small (although good). They come with veggies & your choice of dip. 3. The Main Burger: My favorite thing of the night. The patties were juicy and the bun was fresh. It was a generous portion and very satisfying. They give you 2 free sides with their mains. I paid extra for the sweet potato fries and it was worth it. They ran out of mash potatoes so we opted for the jalapeno cheddar-cornbread with brown sugar butter. Yum. SERVICE: 5/5 Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. She came by often to refill water and ask about our meal. OVERALL: 3/5 The quality of food here is very average so I'd skip on all the other dishes and just order their burger next time I dine here. I've been here a few times, and the second time at this place they seated us in the parking lot. Since COVID-19 struck and only patios were open, we assumed that's where we'd be seated. As it turned out the patio seating was full, and they sat us in the parking lot. I came back a second time and still the wait for the food wasn't great, however the prices are fair, which is why i give the place a 2. I still wouldn't recommend this place. read more

As the designated driver who only drank soda and lime.... it was offensive when the waitress stated on the soda refill that they only give one "lime slice" per visit.... unpack that ... it was spectacularly insulting. I was craving a salmon steak and found this place in the Hamilton area. The server was friendly and the food came out not long after being ordered. I ordered: 1) Caesar - their daily special for Sunday included $2 off caesars. The ceasar tasted spicy as one should and was visually appealing as it was topped with a veggie skewer. 2) Pistachio crusted salmon - I had never had pistachio crust on my salmon before but after this experience, I will definitely be having it again some time in the future. It tasted delicious & the mashed potatoes plus asparagus made the dish whole. I appreciate the maple flavour to add a bit of sweetness to the dish. 3) Truffle & shrimp rigatoni - this dish also had peas, mushroom & bacon bits in it. Went for lunch on. Saturday afternoon. Sat inside since it was a bit chilly. It was quiet when we came it but by the time we left it was much busier. I had the grilled cheese burger with sweet potato fries and my husband had the butter chicken. The burger was delicious but the fries were a tad over cooked. I always have the burger when I go to State & Main. My husband raves about the butter chicken (I know, who'd have thought?!) and has it every time we go. Delish! read more

Also had fish tacos (okay) and dirty pie (delicious brownie ice cream dessert). Server Alicia was fun, friendly, and quick with the recommendations which were right on the money. This place just opened on Upper James & Rymal beside The Burger's Priest (two amazing options? How does one choose?). I went with two others on Tuesday night and was thoroughly impressed by the food, the service, and the atmosphere! It's a casual dine with reasonably priced food and BIG portions. For starters we had the Dragon Boat Lettuce Wraps which were so delicious I could have had that as my meal alone and I would've been satisfied! But for the main, I ordered the Applewood Salmon Club and had the option of two sides, so I chose the quinoa salad and French fries. It was all so good and I could barely finish it. The others had Long Beach Fish Tacos and the Saigon Sub with jalapeño mashed potatoes on the side (I tried these, they were heavenly) and they loved their meals just as well. One thing I really like was that there are so many options at this place. In a sense it was overwhelming but I feel like I could bring anyone here and they could find something to eat that they would enjoy. The waitress was very friendly and helpful (I'm not an onion fan and she double-checked all the ingredients for me). Overall, great experience and I will definitely be back. read more

We are back for Sunday lunch and sat on the lovely heated patio. It is surrounded by glass panels to keep the wind away and, on this sunny day, was very comfortable. Service was excellent. I ordered the Royal Bangkok Bowl. It is a very tasty dish, but don't order it unless you like the heat. It is VERY spicy. My wife had the Fish & Chips and she raved about the coating on the very large piece of fish - enough to take home for another meal. She also loves the dill dip for the fries. read more

We usually LOVE the macaroni and cheese from State and Main but this time - there was barely any cheese. Just noodles and bread crumbs. Showed up 6pm on a Friday hoping that we would get a table. Tried for an online reservation, nothing available for hours. The place was about 3/4 full but no issues getting a table immediately. Drinks served immediately, appetizers soon after, followed by the main. Did not feel rushed at all, nor did we feel ignored. Absolutely fantastic experience Visited tonight for dinner and was absolutely blown away by everything from this location To start: Waitress was extremely friendly and had honest recommendations, which I value. Checked up on us at numerous points in the meal, and was very personable. We ordered the pow shrimp (may have the name wrong) and it was cooked to perfection, dusted with spice and topped with a spicy mayo type sauce. I've been to a lot of burger joints, and i can honestly say this was the best burger i'I've ever had. The quality and taste was out of this world. I can't quite pinpoint what specifically it was, but it was delicious The other two in my party ordered the chicken and spinach salad which she raved about" and the chicken wrap, which i tried a bite of, and I'd definitely order. State and Main has always been a go-to place for me when I am feeling like something mainstream. I have had yet to review this location because my cousin waitressed here - so I felt a little biased. She no longer works here so I feel like I can be more realistic! First I need to say that I have been to this location many, many times. I have always - every single time - had a lovely experience with the staff. Every interaction I have has has been a friendly one! I am really impressed with this, especially because sometimes these chain type places can hire some not so great people (attitude wise). I have even spoken with supervisors and managers and they have all been really lovely! Now the food - everything I have tried on the menu has been good and tasty. I do have to say I have some go-to's and some items that I get over and over again, but even when I venture and try a new item - it has been a good experience. If ever anything has been less than perfect with an item, they have no problem fixing it straight away and apologizing for the mistake (this has not happened often at all). I like how you can even sample the wine if you ask! That's a plus in my books (I am pretty picky with my wines!) A few of my favourite items are: basically all of the appetizers, the salmon sandwich, basically all of the salads, any of the flatbreads, and both of the taco options. I have also heard the the hamburgers are delicious (though I don't eat hamburgers!) I have had some cool occasions at State & Main, so this place has been great over time and continues to be a great place to visit. Amazing restaurant! I came here right after covid and i have to say the experience was mediocre at best as we were sat in the parking lot rather than the patio. However, this place turned it around since then! I again sat on the patio and the ambiance of it was lovely. The seating was comfortable and i did not feel cramped at all. The food was a 10/10, i had the bang bang shrimp and the jalapeño mac and cheese and both were delectable. the bang bang shrimp had a great texture and sauce and the mac and cheese had a nice layer of breadcrumbs to add to the mouth feel. The only downside of my experience was the service. I was greeted by 2 hostesses who were not very friendly and the interaction felt very awkward. On the flip side out waiter was fantastic, he was very attentive and came by many times to check up for any refills or issues. Amazing place overall, would definitely check out again! read more

Great location and if you like newer restaurants with a great sense of style this place is for you. The only downside to the building itself is the fact that the tables are pretty close together. Not a lot of space for two people at the smaller tables and servers have a difficult time bringing food to the table and serving. Food was really good. Had a steak that was perfectly cooked (and I find with medium rare, this is not always the case). Awesome appetizers - the filling in the lettuce wraps was seasoned well and hot. They have an interesting drink menu and they will try to make any drink that you suggest if you can't find it on their menu. We will be back for sure. read more

I've been to to Upper James location on a number of occasions. The food has always been decent but the service is hit or miss. Last visit service was terrible. My guest and I waited ten minutes to be offered drinks. If I didnt flag someone down would have been longer. Service was inconsistent all night. Would not return in the near future. read more

At $15, i got the applewood smoked salmon. It was amazing and portions are off the charts! All sandwiches and entrees come with 2 sides. With so much variety, you can't go wrong. One of the best meals we've had in a while! I got the Buffalo Chicken Philly Cheese Sandwich and it's my new favourite sandwich EVER. My hubby got the steak sandwich (which would have been better if it was not open faced as he likes to sink his teeth into a good steak sandwich) but it was delicious and he almost had an "American Pie" inspired incident with the jalapeño corn bread because he loved it so much. Poached salmon, avocados, chick peas, yams, asparagus, radish and mint over quinoa with agave lemon vinaigrette and Greek yogurt tzatiki... sounds delish!!!!...yet it was bland and the asparagus and yams tasted like leftovers, not fresh. My friend got the Cobb salad and liked it. Therefore, 3 stars. I would never order the Hollywood bowl again. It looks so yummy but reality is very different. Pretty standard flavor however the portion was huge. My friend had the buffalo chicken sandwich, it was good but rather small compared to my entree.
