One of our favorite Hamilton restaurants! Berkeley North is one of our go-to's - consistent, fresh and always delicious! So many wonderful punchy nuanced flavors and textures. We love the fried chicken, shrimp and pea pasta, avocado salad, spicy ribs, pickles, fish and chips. The dark chocolate tart is rich and a bit bitter - I love it. We tried the cream puff tonight and were blown away! Just when you think it couldn't get any better! Everything is delicious - you cant go wrong! We also love that we can get some of their products at Dundurn Market too. Homemade pasta, sauces, smoked fish, breads, drinks - so many special items to makes any dinner that much more delicious and special. Went for lunch on a Saturday while traveling from Toronto to Niagara Falls after finding the restaurant on the Michelin List. The Tabouleh Salad and Fresh Cheese and Sourdough were wonderful. Cheese and sourdough made in house. While these were unique and great the Chicken Sandwich and Club sandwich were great but nothing overly unique or crave worthy. We were on our way back to Toronto & decided to check out Hamilton, Berkeley North came up as one of the highest rated restaurants so we decided to check it out. They do stay true to their Pacific Coast cuisine promise. We tried the Ceviche, Shrimp salad, Hamilton Hot Chicken, Flatiron steak and the fries. The style is to share, almost like tapas, but the portions are much larger. We were very happy with the ceviche, it was great. I enjoyed the shrimp salad, had a good balance of zest and freshness. The hot chicken were 4 wings that were presented on slaw and tasted great. The flatiron steak has fresh chilis on them with a sweet glaze. In general we find the food to be very good and have no complaints. The service was tragically slow, probably due to staff shortages. Our server did try her best and we appreciate her efforts, but it looks like it was just too busy for the team to keep up. I'm sure the service will be stellar once this whole staffing debacle settles down. Oh, and yes, we enjoyed the vibe and ambiance, it was lovely. We met in Hamilton and came here based on a recommendation about Hamilton's nouveau food scene. We didn't realize we were eating tapas-style food and tapas-style portions. Our waiter, who provided excellent service, actually said "family style" eating, so we had visions of Italian restaurants with giant bowls of everything to be delved out amongst us. BN is a comfortable, trendy restaurant with spaced out COVID-safe tables, waitstaff were all masked. So based on portions/pricing, BN is over-priced, even compared to NY and TO tapas eateries. But the food you get is wonderfully prepared and very tasty. We started with the mushroom dumplings which were perfectly steamed and seasoned. The avocado salad topped with crunch toasted quinoa was one of the hits of the evening. The ribs were also very good with a nice heat to its jerk-style sauce. The "Fresh Cheese and Sourdough" is actually ONE slice of toast with cheese for $13.50. It was really good, but one slice of toast for that price? The Manitoulin whitefish was also another hit - crispy, fresh, perfectly cooked. Seeing the four of us split a piece of fish the size of 4 postage stamps made us giggle. The Agnolotti was a little salty for my taste. But the best - for me - dish of the dinner was the wonderful vegan cheesecake, made with a crispy chocolate almond crush with a cherry topping. You would not think it's vegan, it was so rich yet light. All the staff at BN were very friendly. Our waiter was especially attentive. Highly recommend BN but go in with the expectation that this is tapas/dim sum sized portions so you can order appropriately. read more

This place was great. We originally had a reservation at another restaurant but I'm really glad we ended up here. Ordered the chicken meatballs, and the dumplings to start. They were fantastic. Then had the ribeye with frites as a main. Here's why it's getting 4 stars instead of 5: The restaurant is based around sharing, and they say that when you sit down. However, the menu isn't really laid out for sharing and can be pretty confusing. SO here's my tip... order at least 3 things for 2 people and share. We thought the ribeye would be big but it was probably only 6oz and the fries were small. It's DEFINITELY a sharing restaurant. Do keep in mind, everything tasted amazing. read more

I came with 2 friends on Thursday night. The place was busy but not crowded. It seems like there are lots of returning customers. The menu is quite small with less than 10 items. The first few things were snack sized to share and there were 2 main entree sized items at the bottom. They also had a $10 cocktail special from 5-9 on Thursdays. Its a little bit more pricey so it doesn't really attract the student crowd. We started with the tuna crudo, the crispy chicken and the lamb croquette. I really liked all 3 but especially the tuna and lamb. Then we had one of the entree sized items, the lettuce pulled pork. It came with sides of kimchi, pickle, and a ginger sauce. I didn't love the pork but I liked the sides. For drinks, I had the red sangria and my friend had the daiquiri. They were both really tasty and they did not cheap out on the booze. I came here once shortly after they first opened. I want went with a large party, and I got to try all of their vegetarian menu items. Their items were unique and had a variety of flavours, and was definitely good. The menu is also very interesting - rather than ordering one main, customers order multiple appetizer-sized dishes. Typically, people order 2 dishes per person. The food was still expensive, and had very small portion sizes. I came at a busy time (an evening shortly after they opened), so the atmosphere is busy and the seating was a bit cramped. The service was still good, even with the busyness. They have an interesting selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and there are half off deals almost everyday. Around 5:30 pm on a weekday night, the place didn't seem too busy, then more people started coming in as time passed and the restaurant became full after 6 pm. We ordered Teriyaki Eggplant, Mushroom Dumplings, Shrimp Tempura and Rib-eye Steak, and as two tiny people, we were more than full by the middle of last dish. We started with Mushroom Dumplings and it was nothing special. I wouldn't order it again. I liked the next dish, Teriyaki Eggplant. It was crispy, sweet and sticky with peanuts. It was the best dish for me. I would be careful in eating this dish, because it really sticks in your teeth. Shrimp Tempura was great. It's a tasty combination with the mayo. Lastly, I really enjoyed the fries that came with the Rib-eye Steak. The waitress told us that the steak would be cooked rare to medium and though I was warned before ordering the dish, I'd prefer more medium to well-done steak. The nicest stuff ever! So personable, friendly and you can really tell they love what they do. All of the food was extremely fresh and delicious. Cheese Bread: the perfect balance of salt and sweet. The olive oil was amazing. It was extremely rich but not too heavy. Chili beef: this was probably my least favourite out of what we got but it's most likely because I'm not the biggest beef fan haha. My dad really enjoyed It. Not spicy if people are worried about that. Mushroom Dumplings: so amazing! Surprisingly, these were my dads favourites out of all we got, and he doesn't even like mushrooms! Grilled Chicken Skewers: these were my personal favourites. In my opinion the best restaurant in Hamilton right now. Every dish we had was spot on. Where else can you get dumplings, pasta and tuna crudo all at one spot? Our waiter, who I believe was also the owner, was extremely personable, engaging and passionate. Each item we had was extremely flavourful and satisfying. We were two people and had 4 dishes, 2 desserts and a bottle of wine (probably could have done another main dish). Combination of local and imported wine. Returned for a second serving. The staff and ambience same 5 star experience similar to the first time around. The food...dipped one star. Slightly disappointed by our mains. I had the shrimp salad, which we enjoyed on our first visit to Berkeley as well. But this time the shrimp were small and not pan seared- it was just boiled? plain shrimp on the salad with no flavouring. Second loss at flavour in the salad was the dressing-barely any of it. we had fresh pasta as our other main. Delicious but serving size was pretty small. Not enough to fill an adult. My brother and I came here for the Novemburger event they were participating in, as their Jerk Fried Chicken sandwich looked the most appealing on the site. The sandwich was delicious, a great balance of heat from the chicken and creaminess from the slaw, and we split a build a bowl with falafel which was awesome. Our sides were tasty too, I got the sweet potato chips and my brother got the potato and leek soup. What we were most impressed by though was our server, who was knowledgable and informative, taking his time explaining points to note on the menu and suggesting a great beer to pair with my sanny. It was his incredible customer service that will have me coming back, as it felt like a learning experience going there. I wish we got the guy's name but unfortunately I forgot. Great staff and overall beautiful atmosphere, but the food did not resonate.... the food was very mediocre and overpriced for what your getting. We found every dish to be incredibly salty, if were paying $18 for two meatballs I expected them to be a lot better. I have no problem in paying a high price for small portions but in this case the quality of the dishes and ingredients used do not reflect the price in anyway. If your looking for a place to get a drink with a beautiful atmosphere and amazing staff this is the place for you! but not if your looking to indulge in food. read more

Had a delicious first experience here tonight with two friends. We got a lot of things on the menu and thought everything was delicious. Highlights include the king crab pasta, homemade sourdough and cheese, corn fritters and edamame dumplings. Dessert was to die for. Ricotta fritters that melt in your mouth. Wife and I went to Berkeley North for dinner after seeing it being reviewed as one of top new restaurants in Hamilton and they didn't disappoint. We had the Shashito pepper tempura and mushroom dumplings for starters, both were excellent (though the dumplings were slightly on the salty side). We shared the king crab platter between the two of us, which served up 6-7 big pieces of king crab legs that was easy to eat, fresh and very meaty. Of note, the fried beans that accompanied the crab platter was by far one of the tastiest beans I've ever had. They have a great local beer selection as well. Had the falafel bowl. It was good until I was almost finished and found a live slug at the bottom of the bowl. The owner apologized and said that this has not happened before, however, the fact that it didn't happen before does not make me feel lucky that I was the first to experience this. This was our second visit and we brought a verrrrry fussy friend, whose discerning palate I was fearing, but she loved it as well. The dishes are served one at a time and meant for sharing. The rotating menu is well thought-out, in that each dish compliments the others, so I recommend you "go big or go home" and order as many as possible, because they are all so unique and tasty. (Having said that, you should probably leave room for dessert...and then tell me how it was, because I haven't managed to squeeze one it yet!) Yes, there is no meat on the menu, but as a carnivore myself, I never miss it here...the pescetarian and vegetarian/vegan options are so satisfying. We were a large group so the chef offered us a tasting menu featuring highlights from the standard menu and some specialties for the day. Coming here is always an excellent experience. I'm often incredibly indecisive on what to eat when I come here, during both brunch and dinner, as everything on their menu sounds so delicious (and I've yet to receive a flop-dish). Yes, relatively pricey dinner menu, and as others have mentioned, the portions are small. However, I've never left disappointed or hungry and the quality and service have been well worth it. I know the Canadian consciousness has largely followed the American trend of portion (lack-of)-control, being that value is only in how stuffed you can get for a buck. We visited on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch around 12:30 pm. There were several guests but not at all busy and we did not have to wait for anything. It is a small space with trendy and modern decor featuring exposed brick and lots of greenery. I imagine it could get quite loud on busy Friday nights but we did not have a problem. Everything was clean and tidy, including the washrooms. The menu is small with only 5 or so options plus a create-your-own salad bowl deal. We had the fish and chips, house-cured BLT, and fried chicken sandwich, all with french fries. They were out of homemade soup as a side option, which would have been nice to try but gives us an excuse to go back! The fish was lightly breaded, fluffy, and crisp. The house-cured BLT featured thick cut bacon and the most wonderful tomato jelly; we had ours with sourdough bread rather than brioche for a more rustic taste. Finally, we had a fried chicken sandwich which had lots of pickles, a LARGE piece of juicy chicken, a house-made hot sauce, and a lightly toasted potato bun. Everything was delicious!! My one and only complaint was the number of fruit flies, we had several buzzing around our beer glasses and one decided to go for a little swim.
