Burned burgers that were supposed to be medium. Why ask us how we like them and then ignore us?

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, the decor is great, the seating is great, the bar is gorgeous. The wait staff looked really sharp and were very attentive. There's the two stars. We had drinks and lunch. The drinks were bad. With the look of the bar, the expectation was you'd actually squeeze some lemons and not use the standard super sweet bar mix in what should be a somewhat sour drink. The food was bad. I couldn't eat the fish and chips, there was just a puddle of grease on my plate. Every time I put my fork to it it oozed oil. Overall a huge disappointment because the atmosphere was great and expectations were high. read more

Great atmosphere and great food. We had a staff meeting there and the service for our large group was fantastic.

It took a very long time to get our orders in. Not sure why, because the waitress passed by several times. The food was good (no regrets) but not perfect. The tuna tartar was ok but it came with wonton chips covered in artificial flavoring which didn't match the delicate taste of tuna. Can't talk about the food because I never sat down. Arrived with my wife and 5 month old (in a car seat). Place was more than half empty when we walked in. Were asked if we had a reservation, which we didn't, and were then told that they were full (which I can understand, even though as I said, the tables were half empty). But then the young lady at the front desk, instead of giving us a wait time just offhandedly remarks, "oh, you can sit at the bar if you want, or at this table". She points at a small round table in front of the entrance (practically in an aisle) with 2 individual chairs. I can understand that your restaurant isn't child friendly. But I considered her attitude as borderline offensive, showing evident lack of knowledge. Where was I supposed to place my son? On top of the bar? In the aisle on the floor? At no moment did she offer to make any arrangements for him. I would have preferred her just saying they were full and given me a wait time to see if I was willing to wait. We went to the Aberdeen Tavern for the first time last night. The experience was almost perfect. By far our best dining experience in Hamilton so far (we've been here 4 months). The food was very well prepared and extremely tasty. We also had some very good local wines. The staff were very attentive and welcoming from the minute we walked in. First...What a gorgeous dinning room. It's sexy, classic and comfortable. It's stunning and pays homage to the vintage of the building. We stopped in for Sunday brunch (reservations are a good idea) and Pepe served our table. He is warm, funny and really knows his craft. Brunch was lovely. Buy a bottle of Belstar and a carafe of orange juice and have some mimosas. We had the tostada rancheros which were delicious. Opt for the salad which is fresh and pretty. The home fries are the only thing we all agreed didn't really work well and they were left behind on our plates. I would love to see home fries that are crisp on the outside and creamy inside. The omelette was perfectly done in the French style and the Beef hash was perfect and perfectly portioned. This place is all about the small details that make food amazing, the service friendly, and the decor sumptuous. For this out-of-towner, the Aberdeen was pure pleasure. read more

Pros: Food, drinks and atmosphere were excellent overall. There were a good variety of beers and wines to choose from. The service was outstanding. Cons: Cocktails and appetizers are overpriced. Round marble tables near the back are too small for eating lunch or dinner at. An upscale establishment where I had a very enjoyable dining experience. The restaurant was a great surprise. I expected a grubby pub. My steak and vegetables were flavourful. One of the rare times I ate everything. The food was amazing! Came into town from Cleveland and Took some customers to the Tavern and everyone loved their meal. I had the Duck and it was to die for, tender and savory. My dinner partners had the lamb dish and the steak. For dessert I had the cheesecake with cherry compote and I really enjoyed. The portion was perfect size. One person the peanut butter dessert that was extremely decadent and sweet and the other had the creme brûlée. We all very happy and the wine selection was very diverse. The atmosphere at this restaurant is up beat if not a little noisy. It was a busy Wednesday night. The server was prompt with our drink orders and patient when we talked rather than order. Our apps were very good as were our mains. My only complaint is that two of our three mains were served but the third didn't arrive for what seemed a very long time. The other diners were half way through their meals before the third arrived! There was an apology from our server but no other compensation was offered. Our bill for three people was over $200 . At that price point I expect better food service and/compensation when the kitchen doesn't produce all of the entrees at the same time. This issue left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I do not remember the last time I had such an incredible experience at a restaurant. Each experience at Aberdeen Tavern set the bar higher and higher for my brunch standards. Our hostess was polite, our waiter was knowledgable and personable, and the atmosphere was astonishing. Before I even received my brunch I was already blown away. I ordered the cheesecake stuffed french toast and my mother ordered the tavern breakfast. The french toast was delightful and cooked perfectly. The cheesecake filling was incredibly flavourful and absolutely oozed between the two pieces of french toast. It was quite filling, however it was good until the last bite. The tavern breakfast was a traditional breakfast, but the nostalgic flavours of a home made breakfast were all there. The eggs were fluffy and full of flavour, the bacon had a good crunch, the home fry hash was delicious, and the tomatoes were seasoned to perfection. Instead of the sausage, my mother was able to get fruit. The assortment was french and juicy - a perfect way to end a meal. I would recommend Aberdeen Tavern in a heart beat and I cannot wait to go back again. read more

Lunch --outstanding --best bowl of mussels I've ever eaten--broth made of the chef's own curry, lime leaves and garlic. I ordered the frites as I was very hungry, but it came with a delicious piece of grilled naan on the side. Had I known wouldn't have ordered the frites as they were rather ordinary and unnecessary. We went to try this restaurant as we heard several good reviews. Our server Dan was amazing and attentive with suggestions. Our food was underwhelming. Their "possibly the best burger" paled in comparison to the many wonderful burger joints we have in Hamilton. Three of us ordered the burger and all were disappointed. I have been for brunch and dinner and both were excellent! We went for brunch on Father's Day and everyone enjoyed their meals very much, but the Huevos Rancheros were the standout! My husband and I went for dinner this evening and again I was impressed. Stunning atmosphere, friendly and efficient service and delicious meals. We had the grilled calamari to start, full of flavour and cooked perfectly, as well as the crab cakes - which were good, but even better with the mango salsa on top - so fresh! We both had the organic halibut and it was incredible. Melt in your mouth and paired perfectly with the buttery risotto that it sat atop! And for dessert - I had the cinnamon bread pudding. Yum, yum and more yum. So moist and warm. Tasted like fall on a warm summer evening. From start to finish everything was wonderful and we will be back! We just bought a house in the neighbourhood and are so happy to have such a great restaurant close by. The only thing that could be improved upon would be to add a Riesling to the white wines by the glass - they were all on the dryer side and I prefer sweet. I've been twice now and first time food was good, burger definitely not best in the world but not close to being the worst either. Overall the table enjoyed their meal and service. Recently went back with my wife and definitely not the same experience. I don't know if not having a reservation entitles service to be indifferent and food over done and not flavourful but that's the experience. Both fish dishes Halibut and Salmon we had were dry, server apologized for not being attentive but when you pay 120 plus tip for 2 (we had 4 beers , 2 apps, 2 dinners) I'd expect more on both ends. It's a busy place and glad it's doing well Hamilton needs to have places people want to come to and talk about but it wasn't a good experience for us this night. read more
