Service was great, however, our food was nothing to write home about. My son and I both ordered cheeseburgers and fries (I upgraded to sweet potato fries and he upgraded by adding bacon). Unfortunately, my burger came our dry and overcooked and came with a stale toasted bun (couldn't eat the top) along with some shredded lettuce, some pickles, and a slice of tomato that looked shriveled like it had been sitting out for several weeks... to top it off, my sweet potato fries came out almost burnt so I had to send the fries back for another batch (which came out perfectly done). I also had to drown my burger in ketchup and mustard in order to make it edible. Meanwhile, my son's burger came out a little too rare for his liking, so he was not happy about that! A folksy, hee-haw kind of place if you're into a folksy, ah shucks kind of restaurant. The menu offers a wide selection of food, but, on the night we were there, not everything was available which makes you wonder why a place that's been in business since 1841 can't get it right. By way of an excuse, our server told us that the 2 unavailable items we inquired about were "very popular." OK, or sort of OK. Why not have more on hand? Kind of plan ahead? In a similar vein, if you're offering your own beer, maybe you should have it on hand to offer. The people I was with all seemed pleased with their food choices. I opted for fish and chips, normally a safe, if uninspired, choice. Not this time.Chips were cold and the batter on the fish might have been mixed with concrete. Once I broke through it, much of the fish still retained its own skin--an unhappy surprise. We called ahead of time and arranged special seating for 16 people, and some of us had special needs. When we arrived the special seating arrangements were taken by someone else. They moved us to another section, which has a big step down, which was difficult for some people. Then we were in the sun which was very hot. Some of us were not happy in the extreme heat. Then they seemed to forget about our table. We had to flag down a server. We finally got our orders taken, and had to remind them twice to bring water. The food was good, i had mango chicken wrap, my husband had a burger with fries. The service was a big disappointment. The manager should have been ready for our party and wasn't there. read more

In the quaint village of Dundas, Collins Brewhouse stands in the middle of King St West with a striking brick facade and widen pillars. It shares its store front with Jax Desserts (another fantastic stop) with parking around the right side and a patio to the left. The menu is a mix of Irish Pub and - of all things - Cajun dining, offering a good selection of hearty seafood, sandwiches, or one of the best burgers in the area. On this trip I decided on the traditional fish and chips... I was not disappointed! The batter for the fish had unusual seasoning, the chips were cooked well, and the tartar sauce was delicious. The hand-cut coleslaw left pieces of cabbage and carrot a bit large for my personal preference but it tasted great nonetheless. Certainly recommended! read more

I am a fairly difficult restaurant customer due to various allergies. So when I'm at Collins, I usually order the fish and ask to substitute whatever veggies they have for the fries. I went yesterday and the fish was lovely as usual and the kitchen found some asparagus to put with it. I've been ill for a long time and lost a lot of weight because I can't eat very much and a lot of food, even if it is something I really wanted, will make me gag when I actually get it. So this meal was the first meal I've finished in a long time. It was tasty and went down well. It's a sports' bar so a bit noisy inside, but the patio is serene, leafy and lovely. It was sunny and warm today so we ate at their outdoor patio, lovely and private. I had the roasted chicken penne pasta, my husband had the crispy chicken, bacon on a bun with fries. We both said it was the best meal we had ordered out in ages! Carson waited on us, and he was amazing, so acommodating, brought more hot water for our tea as well, without us ask having to ask. Inside the sandwich has a thin piece of grilled chicken breast with some (oily) sautéed mushrooms, onions, peppers and lots of melted Provolone cheese. The menu says on a garlic baguette which is misleading; it's not a baguette, it's a soft white bun. Salad comes with mainly lettuce with sprinkle of shredded carrot, few pieces of cranberries, two thin strips of cucumbers, a cherry tomato sliced in 2, two raw onion rings and some pecans. Iced cold beers on a hot summer afternoon?! Collins Brewhouse is nothing fancy but a nice local neighourhood pub. I would suggest having a drink in the patio area on a nice sunny day. Service was prompt and our Brewhouse Lager and Brewhouse Red were pretty good and true to style plus cold and refreshing. The interior decor though was boring but not a bad place to have a drink or 2. As usual, I could not comment on their food as I don't really go to pubs for food. read more

What a pleasant surprise! We were aiming to try the Thai place in town but it was closed so we ended up at Collins. The patio seating is so lovely in the summer with the twinkle lights to boot! Five stars is for the service. Our waitress was so attentive, professional, and kind. We appreciated the staff encouraging us to stay and hang out outside plus insider tips about the town. Food was really good too. We shared the spinach dip which came out bubbling hot (see video). Very impressive amount of garlic bread on the side, which sadly we hardly made a dent in. I liked that it was also served with chips and salsa. Although the salsa wasn't my fav. I had a hard time deciding what to get and ended up with the jambalaya. Great choice - super flavorful, tasty and fresh. My husband enjoyed the fish and chips. We are excited to return for more patio time while the weather is so nice. read more

Nice spot, decent food with some vegetables options. Lovely patio -- one significant drawback is that no pets are allowed on the patio. This really needs to change in this city - other cities/restaurants so much more progressive in this regard and would gain business by allowing customers to bring their four legged furry friends. Staff use the disabled washroom, which became a point of conflict with me, as I could not use the stairs prior to surgery. Conflict led to me walking out and not going back. First time in years we have eaten there. I had an Italian burger with a gluten free bun. The burger was great. And so were the sweet potato fries. My husband has the fish and chips which he said were also good. They also offer a children's menu which was appreciated by our other guests. Chicken wings were good as well. Probably one of my worst experiences dining in Dundas. They are crooks, their 15% button on the machine charges you for 18% without telling you. Absolutely disgusting. Not too bad! Came in with a party of 12 and got our drink and main orders in. Despite the size of the party, the food didn't take too long which is a huge plus! Waitress was so sweet and funny! Definitely people friendly. I ordered chicken Po-Boys, which comes with a side so I got fries. It's a pretty big dish: fried chicken in a French baguette with coleslaw, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. it was good but it was a lot. By the time I finished half the baguette, I could only pack in the fries lol so I took the rest home. Fries were good :) However, two of my friends got the crab cakes which actually don't come with a side. It's 3 crab cakes with a sauce for 13.99. I was a bit upset for them when I saw the plates come out so they ordered a side of fries to share. They had a special deal on wings! Clearly some picky reviewers here! This place was recommended by my brother and sister-in-law for dinner on a Sunday night. Being the typical Toronto food snob, I didn't go in with super high expectations, but I left super impressed. The interior of the restaurant is pleasant to the eye, I imagine the patio in summer is quite lovely. We were four adults and two kids. The menu had a wide array of choices for us all. They had a separate children's menu a number of options (e.g., pasta, chicken fingers, etc.) and customization options (e.g., the pasta had the choice of tomato, cream or cheese sauce. And each meal came with the choice of side of salad, fries, raw or steamed vegetables, etc. The regular (adult) menu had almost too many choices, with a number of southern specialties like po' boy sandwiches (which could be had with fish, shrimp, or chicken, etc.), red beans and rice and jambalaya. My SIL and I both ordered the jambalaya, my husband ordered the fish po' boy, and my brother ordered a burger. All portions were not only huge but also delicious. I kept half of mine for lunch the next day and enjoyed it every bit as much reheated. Everyone else (including my toddler) also indicated that they enjoyed their meals. The beer menu was decent, though not incredible extensive. I think I ordered a Barking Squirrel. Service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend! read more

Family of four -- Fish n' Chips & Wings all around -- no problems, per se -- good eats, reasonably priced, but the place seems to lack oomph.... I can't quite put a finger on it -- I'm certainly not complaining, but at the same time nothing about the experience drove me to want to return anytime soon. My misgivings may stem from the service -- our waitress seemed disinterested. It was as though we were merely a hurdle she had to slog through to get to the back end of her day. We felt it. I'll probably return one day, but when dollars reserved for dining out are slim, it's tough to justify going back to a restaurant that's just OK. There are other options throughout Dundas, Waterdown, Ancaster, and the rest of West Hamilton. I wish The Collins Brewhouse luck. How can this place even stay in business? The locals must be complete pushovers. THE FOOD The Mussels were way over-salted, and that is saying something when it comes from me. The Nachos were mediocre at best. The cracked pepper burger was decent. Oh and they have a few beers on tap....I asked the waitress what the style for one of them was...she said "Red". Seriously.....this is a friggin pub....know your beers. And the entire selection of beers was mediocre at best....I definitely have been spoiled living in Columbus. THE SERVICE Pleasant, but incompetent at least in terms of knowledge of beer. Food service was painfully slow....and it wasn't just our table complaining. A huge patio with an outdoor bar (closed), room for music, or a romantic hideaway corner, etc. A great reno job inside - high tables, blond wood, etc. But no atmosphere - just people sitting around drinking. Why? Must be the management - it all starts at the top. I asked about local brews on tap; our waitress mentioned three from the nearby Nickel Brook brewery. What are they like? "I have no idea, I only drink Coors Lite," she says. No, "I'm not sure, let me find out," no interest at all. The food? Bruschetta and fried calamari were average. Whatever. A smart operator could take this place and turn it into a regional gem. Instead, it just sits there as an OK local drinking hole, surviving due to lack of competition. Oh well. read more

I honestly don't know how this place has gotten such bad reviews but maybe because at a busier time they're super popular so they get very busy. I went here yesterday for lunch with my best friend and her boyfriend and our service was very friendly and knowledgeable and the food was fantastic. I had the blackened chicken ranch wrap with sweet potato fries and it was great. The waitress recommended the fish and chips to my friends boyfriend and he just devoured it. The place had a nice atmosphere and they have daily specials which is always awesome in my mind. Totally worth going to. read more

Great service, great food - complete with a large outdoor patio to enjoy your meal outside! We were six hungry cyclists looking for a satisfying mid-140km ride meal. Offering a classic pub menu, the wide selection of items proved to have something for all. The Bacon and Cheddar burger had a nice juicy patty, 2 slices of cheddar, and perfectly crunchy bacon (though you could choose to have a peameal option) on top. The fish and chips were also cooked well with a batter that was delightfully crunchy and not too thick. Though the batter was crunch, the fish inside was moist and well seasoned. Service was also terrific! When mentioned that we planned to share an item, they offered to separate it onto 2 plates for us - we didn't even have to ask! Huge side patio, tasty and well priced burgers (good veggie option included), and spicy caesars. I really don't need much more after a day walking around the nearby trails in the sun. It may not have the same unique charm that some other spots offer up in this little hamlet, but its good, and its got space for you and all your friends (not their dogs though - the layout of the patio just doesn't allow for this), and its open later in the day, which is key sometimes. I love the Collin's, it's a local hotspot with tons of great food. Great atmosphere, awesome patio during the summer. Highly recommend the Mac and cheese made with double bacon, the Thai chicken Stir-up, the mussels, the three-cheese spinach dip, crab cakes and the Thai chicken salad. My favourite pup in town for lunch & 2nd for dinner. The food is always good, the service at times is lacking. My faves are the Jambalaya & PoBoys. My first PoBoy was the fish sandwich, beer battered haddock on a fresh baguette with mayo, slaw, tomato. It's tough to finish along with the home cut fries, best fries in town. My biggest complaint is the seating. In my late 60's I find sitting on unpadded seats & benches is very uncomfortable. I'm sure there's a good reason for wooden seating, faster turn over. read more

Poor service. Very disappointing. Took forty minutes just to get our drinks. 4 minutes to get the bill though! Dropped in for a quick celebratory drink on a hot afternoon. Waitress number 1 left the menus and didn't return until she brought the bill despite our attempts to get her attention. Place was not busy. There was one large table whose orders she took before she came to ours and two other smaller tables that arrived after us but who miraculously got their drinks and appetizers before we got ours. After a long wait, number 2 arrived to say she wasn't our waitress but she would take our orders. 4 mixed drinks. Two pretty basic. Two blended. All 4 off their rather short list. No substitutions requested. Easy peasy orders. 40 minutes later after complaining to waitress number 1 as she passed by our table yet again returning from delivering drinks to another table, waitress number 2 arrived with our drinks and excuses for the service. As mentioned waitress number 1 returned before we had all finished our drinks...with the bill...and stayed rooted in the spot far too close as I paid the bill without so much as a word. Had our day not been an otherwise awesome one (reason for the celebratory drinks) this unfortunate service would have had a really negative impact. Luckily for us, it will just be an amusing story.
