Such a cozy little spot that's perfect for coffee and breakfast. We stopped here before a hike to Dundas Peak and you can tell it's a beloved spot in the community. My oatmeal power bowl was delicious- be aware you cannot modify and ask for raisins to be left out, but I ate them anyway! My mom loved her avocado toast and said it had a little kick to it. One of the most picturesque cafes just outside of Hamilton! A relatively small, historic brick building with greenery growing along the outside of its walls, blue painted window frames, and a few benches outside. You enter in to see clean, modern aesthetic cafe vibes and a rack of freshly baked sourdough from Dear Grain. The cafe connects to its outdoor seating area and feels a bit like a secret garden. There's a variety of baked goods, food, and drinks to choose from. Their espresso tends to be on the mellower side - I think it's a medium body, mild & balanced, and pairs well with milk. If you're into pour overs, Detour has an incredible selection of their own coffee bean roasts. Not a coffee fan? No problem. I also recommend this spot to pick up the best artisan style sourdough I've had in this area (if you're not close to Dear Grain Commissary in downtown Hamilton). I love the new renovations! It has been 16 months since I have been to Detour, and the space is so much warmer and more open than it was before. The staff are always friendly, and I love that you're always going to see someone familiar (if you're from the Hamilton area). I do however miss the more attentive dining experience pre-renovations, as the new Detour is truly fast-casual. I would be curious to see how the outdoor patio fits with the new model of business, since I know a few people feel the same way about the transition to fast-casual. Overall, what a great place! I am so glad that the food is much more fresh, and that the bread is no longer toasted too tough with the Brunch options. I can't wait to return when I head back to Ontario! read more

I know where I going for lunch when I was planning My Day in the Hamliton/Dundas Area. I always want visit the actual Detour Coffee Roastery in Burlington but never got a chance. But coming here seems to be better as I can drink the coffee and eat their food too! The patio area is so calm and peaceful. And if you are not a coffee drinker, there are a lot of other options including Ontario wines and beers and even house made Sour Cherry Pop and even Nickel Brook's Root Beer! We ended up ordering: Cappuccino ($3.33) and Iced Americano ($3) Reuben Sandwich ($11.95) The ultimate: Detour Smoked Meat + Bubbie's Sauerkraut, Melted Swiss Cheese and House Made Russian Dressing Rueben sandwich was amazing good. The meat was smoked perfectly. I really like their concept of locally sourced and house made ingredients! I would like to update my review based on how Detour responded to my initial, no-so-shining review. Good businesses: Proactive, reach out to customers and listen to their concerns. After that, they invite the customer back &/or try to make things right. Bad businesses: Get defensive, justify their mistakes, and dismiss said customer as one person with a chip on their shoulder. I was contacted via email by Stephanie, the manager, who invited me back to Detour and hopefully have a better experience. Since Dundas isn't exactly around the corner, I recently returned months after Stephanie touched base with me. During that time, Detour underwent a major renovation that brightened up the space! All the staff members were friendly and helpful. Baked goods were fresh, moist, and not sickeningly sweet. Iced latte was good, Sparkling Cascada tasted like a slightly sparkling brown sugar water. Café was fairly quiet during the time of my visit. It was quite relaxing on the shaded patio. Staff were consistently clearing tables or polishing glass if they weren't busy. I used to go to Detour often when they had standard seating and table service. The last few times I've been I have found it so incredibly frustrating that I won't go anymore. They have a back seating approach where you need to secure a table prior to ordering. On multiple occasions I've had my food in hand and a table opened up but I couldn't get to it in time because of the people in line before a couple just walking in the door snag the spot. They need to decide if they are a proper sit down place with table service or a coffee shop. read more

I usually make a special 'detour' here for a latte when visiting family in Hamilton. I ordered a latte which was ok. My partner ordered a hot chocolate which was awful. When he complained they offered to make him another one but he said the quality was not acceptable. They let him walk away without a refund or at least a credit. Just picked up their brewed house blend coffee, black (no dairy, no sweetener) to go. Wow!!! Some of THE best brewed coffee I have ever had. And I live in Toronto & have tried a lot of coffee shops. This place is a triple threat! Coffee is bar none in Ontario. 1) Latte art is not just for coffee to have a pretty finish. It signifies a properly balanced espresso beverage. Latte art can only be accomplished with the essential skills required to pull a proper shot, which must have the right color and thickness to the crema, and properly textured milk froth. Not to mention the skill and finesse required to combine them properly to create the art! I have yet to encounter a barista at Detour that does not have these skills. Atop it all, they have not two but four espressos to choose from with different flavor profiles (actually 3 because one is a decaf). 2) The pastries are to die for! I was told that the baker is keen on fresh and seasonal ingredients. I don't know if this is true, but my taste buds seem to think that this rumor is absolutely true. 3) The service, the food and the prices are really good! I hung out for a few hours this past weekend and happily dropped $40 on coffee, pastries and lunch. In conclusion, as a foodie, I could not be more pleased with this place. The BEST coffee I have ever had! I've learned so much about coffee since finding this place when it was a tiny little hole in the back alley. They opened up the restaurant early this year (2011) and the quality of food is just as good. I am also in love with the atmosphere, it fits perfectly with Dundas. They opened up a patio as well, which feels like a getaway, even though you would step out on the busiest street in town. Bonus points: They allow dogs on the patio! It seems they have a love for dogs because they always have fresh water available. One time, one of the owners stayed and pet my dog when she started whining when i was inside grabbing a coffee. We found Detour on Yelp and we'll definitely be back. Friendly staff, very nicely appointed and a great outdoor patio with good shading if wanted. Our lattes were super yummy,we had seconds :-). No latte art for us :-( I had the Detour Hash which was very tasty. I had asked for a soft poached egg and when I mentioned that it was not what I was served I was promptly offered another egg. My partner had the bagel (Detour made) and lox with greens. Nice presentation and delicious. Thanks for giving us a lovely way to start our Sunday. Nicely done! read more

A group of friends and I stopped in at Detour Cafe after a 3 hour hike at Dundas Peak. We got there at around 2:30pm on a Sunday afternoon, and even though it was a huge group, the staff was friendly and accommodated to the best of their ability. Location/service: The cafe is located about 8-10 minutes away from the Dundas Peak, on a busy King Street. Meter street parking is available in front of the cafe or on the street as well as side streets, but it is free on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays. The cafe itself isn't very big as there are about 10 (one-sided booth) tables and of course, these tables can be moved to accommodate a larger group. There's also a patio outside with umbrellas for the hot summer months, but unfortunately our group couldn't go outside yesterday as seats were all taken and there were just too many of us. The place also has a shelf of coffee beans, pots, other related materials to sell, so that's definitely an option if you are a coffee lover and wants to take a bag of beans home! After all, Detour is known for their coffee. They started as a coffee roastery in 2009 and they still roast their coffees fresh each week! Food: Coming as a large group definitely as its perks: you get to try a lot of things! I ordered an extra hot skimmed flat white ($3.71) and it was really good. The coffee is definitely strong. So if you need a boost in the morning, this will do (at least for me!). Since I only wanted a snack, I got the double chocolate pumpkin loaf (vegan) ($2.50) and it was just okay. It wasn't anything spectacular. The pastries change ever so often, so I'll definitely come back to check out some other stuff. Things that my friends ordered and that I got to try: A side of fries ($4) and it was quite good. They were those rustic cut kinds. I liked how it was only lightly salted (or if none at all). A friend got the BLT deluxe ($12.95) and for all sandwiches, it i served with either mixed greens, soup or fries. The soup of the day yesterday sweet and sour cabbage soup and it was very good. Lots of cabbage and the taste was just excellent! The BLT sandwich on the other hand wasn't so good. The bread was hard and cold and the filling was very mediocre. Another friend got the mac n' cheese ($12.95). It came hot, but what's really good was that there was a generous sprinkling of panko bread crumbs on top which gave it the nice crunch in every bite. I liked how it wasn't drenched in sauce and it wasn't overly salty. Several friends ordered the 2-cheese grilled cheese sandwich ($11.95) and the breakfast sandwich ($7.95). Both were good, and they satisfied our hunger, but it wasn't anything special. I love that this cafe also served Ontario beers! For those who are more into alcohol than coffee, this is a nice option. They also have different in-house drinks like the sour cherry pop. All in all, I would definitely come back again to enjoy their coffee and try other dishes! read more

Detour Cafe is a small joint located in Dundas, West of Hamilton. It isn't too large - so be weary of grabbing a seat, but their staff is friendly & nice. My friend and I came to celebrate her birthday and came for a brunch-ish meal. My friend got the breakfast sandwich ($8.95) w/ a coffee ($2.63) and I got the super salad ($12.95) with a macchiato ($3). Overall price wise, this place isn't too bad - it's typical of the price of a smaller coffee joint. The food was decent, it was definitely fresh, made to order and enjoyable but their food and coffee also didn't stand out from many of the other coffee joints that Hamilton has to offer. Food was pretty good, had the sweet potato soup with sourdough and hand cut fries (the fries were amazing). My date had the avocado on toast but found the onions to be too overpowering on it. Food came quickly (ordered around 10AM). The only issue I had with the venue was the odd smell I got walking in - I don't know if it was just that day or if it's just how it gets during hotter months but I picked up on some unpleasant smells. I love Detour, but twice we have tried to have dinner there. Both times we had to leave before even ordering any food because we just SAT THERE for what felt like EONS waiting to order. One time, we were able to order drinks, and that took so long, even though we were the only table in the whole place, for the ditzy waitress to bring us our drinks that we had to just pay for the drinks and leave without even drinking the drinks. She didn't even ask us why or never seemed interested or concerned as to what made us leave so abruptly. Another time, we waited forever to order only to be told that half the things on the menu they were "out" of. We just left because there was nothing left on the menu that we even cared to eat. Both times, we were the only people inside. Normally, I love this place for brunch and coffee, and I usually don't mind their laidback service because during the day, it is acting as a café and it is usually super busy. Dinner service is A WHOLE OTHER world, and they should get their act together before trying this. Maybe they should go back to "reservations only" for dinner service and that way, they can be prepared and not waste hungry people's time. read more

Their coffee is as good as it gets. No question. Their "pour-over" servings are simply fantastic. I'm usually a one-spoonful-of-sugar guy, just to cut the bitterness of most coffees, but the Detour brews are absolutely brilliant as is. Black or with a dollop of skim milk, simply the best. I've been inside Detour maybe 6 or 7 times, and every visit is met with the friendliest staff imagineable. Hate to gush so much, but I find no faults.... Wait. No more then 2 months go, this was what I would have described as the BEST place for breakfast in all of Hamilton and surrounding areas....NOT anymore!! I don't know if they have come under new ownership, but my last three visits have been nothing short of terrible. First, my wife ordered their avocado toast which she has ordered hundreds of times in the past, and never been disappointed. When they brought it out it had maybe one spoonful of avocado on it and little to no garnish. When I brought this to the waitresses attention, and mentioned that it always comes with nearly triple the amount that was served to us this time, she simply replied with "sorry, but maybe you just got a small avocado"....seriously? When I asked to speak with the manager, she reluctantly said she would bring over extra avocado...which they proceeded to bill us for anyways. The manager never once came over to offer an explanation or apology. Secondly, their Detour breakfast WAS (past tense) the best! It has always been expensive, but they would make up for that with HUGE portions and awesome extras (butter, jam , and of course the tomato jam)..But not anymore. The portions are smaller, the tomato jam is no longer included and the price of course went up. Oh and if you want the tomato jam, that will now cost you an extra $1.00. The last two times I ordered this breakfast, I had to send it back because the bacon was so over cooked that when I picked it up, it disintegrated. How does it even leave the kitchen like that?!? I'm not sure who owns and operates this place now...but damn...you guys messed up a good thing. I will never visit or recommend this place to anyone EVER again. They struck out with the first three things I tried to order. The sandwich board listed some sort of french toast made out of brioche with chocolate for brunch, but they weren't serving it because it wasn't the weekend. They should've taken it off the sandwich board, then! Then I tried to order the macaroni and cheese, and they were out. Then I wanted a butter tart, which they brag about on that same sandwich board as being "the best", and they were out of that too. My partner ordered a sandwich, and when it arrived I asked him, "That's the full sized?" I was dismayed, because I had ordered the half-sized version of the smoked meat sandwich - "house smoked, thick cut smoked brisket on whole wheat rye with pickled mustard seeds", as described in the menu. It was delicious, but tiny. I can't vouch for the coffee, as I didn't have any. They have a very pleasant outdoor space. So to recap: overpriced food, unreliable menu, tiny portions. this place has been around for a while now as a roaster hiding in a nook in a back alley. They did so well they've now taken over the building, and opened a fantastic cafe. From day one it's been the best cafe in the region. The owner has been supplying a number of cafes from Hamilton to Toronto with coffee he roasts himself. He sources beans from all over and provides handy little tasting cards in case you want to compare your Papuan to your Sumatran. They've put a ton of work and care and brilliance into it. The staff are great too. I need to move to Dundas. I haven't partaken of too much prepared food, but the treats are great. Sorry to be so sickeningly positive! read more

Popped in for breakfast this morning however they were quite busy. Ended up with a latte and a morning glory muffin.... Both of which were delicious! It's been awhile since I had a latte that I enjoyed as much as that one. I even considered getting a second before I left but that would have made me severely over caffeinated. There is a lovely patio with tree covering which makes you feel like you are somewhere else entirely.
