What a cute cafe...perfect score! The staff were all welcoming and the food was absolutely perfect. We were in the area for the McMaster U open house and found this cafe near by so we stopped for breakfast. The cashier employee was so helpful recommending the big breakfast which was delicious. We also got a cinnamon bun which is only baked on Saturday and the avocado toast. Everything was so good. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely be stopping by for a bite! read more

Savoury Southwest! I'm addicted. I was addicted the first BITE I took and sniffed it down as if there was no tomorrow. What is Savoury Southwest you ask?? Savoury Southwest Muffin is a House Specialty that on initial bite had a Cheese Croisant flavour, while the ingredients(Sun Dried Tomato, Corn, Cheddar) made memories of a Omelette, and with the consistency of Cornbread. All of this made into a good sized MUFFIN! Now that I introduced the Muffin, maybe I should introduce the Coffee House "MY DOG JOE". It's a LOCAL, ecletic feel coffee shop that is filled with Students with laptops and Wall of Art from Local Artist on display as well as for sale. I was told that many of the nearby Students work here as well as I see a young gentleman take my order of Americano-Small($2.50) and introduce me to SAVOURY MUFFINS($2.50). The coffee was GOOD quality in my opinion, plus it is advertised as Fair Trade, Shade Grown, and Organic Coffee. This considered the pricing was very reasonable but then MAYBE I'm comparing it to T.O. I could taste the SHOT every sip I took and it was pure TASTY that didn't let me regret that I didn't ask for a Latte like I do everywhere else I go. I even saw a couple BEER selection on a side blackboard. There was another batch of muffins next to Savoury Southwest called, Savoury Broccoli. Stopped in at My Dog Joe to grab a snack and a coffee before a nail appointment that I had booked for 9:00am. I'm glad this place was open in Westdale - I was thinking to myself where would I grab coffee and then just stumbled across this adorable place. The inside has seating and there are also a few seats outside to enjoy the nice weather. I was surprised that they had so many yummy treats available and breakfast snacks! I opted for a homemade muffin - chocolate chip. I honestly could have eaten a number of any of the scones, squares, cookies or muffins. My chocolate chip muffin was so fresh and had so many chocolate chips - it was great! The drink menu was quite large and they have quite a few iced drink options - which of course I enjoyed with it being about 30 degrees outside. I was deciding between an iced caramel vanilla or an iced machiatto - and I was feeling extra chocolatey so I went for the machiatto. It was basically a chocolate iced coffee! Yum! The coffee was really tasty and had a good flavour. I will definitely be visiting My Dog Joe when I am in the Westdale area again! read more

Ah My Dog Joe. Such a wonderful addition to the Westdale scene, although I am probably dating myself if I tell you I remember back when the space was the Cereal House. This place fills up during exam time. Free wireless, good music, great food and friendly staff make it easy to linger for hours. They even have some CD's you can borrow and listen to on your laptop during your visit. Lots of personality, with rotating student art exhibits. Prices are a bit high for Hamilton, but the drinks are quality and made with care. If you have a sweet tooth, look no further than the vanilla caramel latte. Many places have a vanilla latte and a caramel latte, but combining the two? Genius. I have to echo the last review about the mind blowing savoury muffins. I love the broccoli cheddar ones. Perfection! Other squares and sweet bars are substantial and yummy. The sandwiches are good and come with a big salad, but are a bit expensive. I like the avocado/havarti one, but can't justify the price when I could easily whip it up at home. One of my favourite Hamilton cafes and a hub for the Mac community. Very good coffee. We had one dark roast and one medium. We didn't know what to expect; we found this place on Yelp. Lemon cranberry square was obviously homemade. Not too sweet, absolutely delicious. The "Hello Dolly" was a coconut grahame cracker delight. We are fairly certain this too was home made. Inside of the coffee shop is very eclectic. Every table is different as are the chairs. We loved the menus prominently displayed in chalk on the walls. A great experience. If you want something a lot different from the usual Starbucks or Second Cup; check this place out. For good coffee, great baked goods, and the friendliest, most pleasant staff (and solid music & free wifi), My Dog Joe is for you. Without question. The savory muffins are friggin' excellent! I had a corn, sundried tomato and cheddar muffin the other day -- I swear I pooped my pants a little bit, it was that good. The flavor and texture of the muffin hit my mouth and I lost all control of other bodily functions; all my senses honed in on the glorious muffin, leaving the rest of me stunned. Numb with excitement. I felt as thought I should begin a prayer.... I don't want to put too fine a point on it, but the savory muffins at My Dog Joe are really quite good. The coffee's good too. I mean, it ain't swill, or generic and tasteless, but like a lot of things, coffee's subjective -- like artwork. I liked the coffee just fine. The room is eclectic and tasteful, but most of all it's inviting. Be they busy or quiet, it's always a pleasant experience. Went to visit as they made it to an article recently as one of the 31 coffee shops you have to visit in Canada, so I had high expectations which might have attributed to the letdown. Ambiance: It was a hippie vibe but didn't really have anything worth mentioning except a few old tables and chairs. At least it was cool on a muggy summer afternoon...? Food & Drinks: I ordered a sparkling lemonade which was just lemonade from the store mixed with some water. Then I got a spicy Thai soup which was quite tasty but I've had better. And lastly the London Fog I ordered was good but nothing special I can get the same thing from any aroma espresso bars. They did have a full menu of sandwiches and desserts that looked amazing so maybe it was just me. Service: it was a self-serve place yet everytime you pay they prompt for a tip on the machine- makes no sense. You gotta earn a tip and if I'm going up there ordering and bringing my own items back to my table, I won't be tipping. Service was mediocre, they weren't rude but not the least bit friendly either. It was an 'order and GTFO' attitude. Wi-Fi: This deserves its own category only because they are on Cogeco and you are limited to three 30-min sessions a MONTH. I used up 2 of those sessions while I was working there. The speed wasn't bad but you have to reconnect every 30 mins. And needless to say they are limiting people coming to work or study there because of this. Def not worth the trek out to the Hammer for this but if you're in the area for a grab and go coffee I don't see why not. read more

Somehow as a resident of Hamilton for many years, I missed making a trip into My Dog Joe for my daily caffeine fix. That was until a few weeks ago, where I've been hooked ever since. The first thing you'll notice when you walk through the funky door at My Dog Joe is the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The centerpiece of their seating arrangement are two big comfortable looking couches that sit squarely in the middle of their coffee shop. This comfortable feel easily reverberates throughout their venue and makes My Dog Joe a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy a coffee, muffin, or panini on the grill. Based on the previous reviews it's no surprise that I'm not the only one who thoroughly enjoys grabbing some free wifi and a beverage here. The staff is as welcoming as the atmosphere of the venue and the local artwork hanging from the walls by artists in the region is a nice little touch to the overall experience My Dog Joe provides patrons. While I haven't tested many items on the menu, their muffins seem extremely popular and I've seen several people chomp down on their freshly grilled panini's that also offer a few vegetarian options for those who prefer sans-meat. I also noticed a beer or two in their fridge which is a bit of a stretch to enjoy midday but if you're ever burning the midnight oil here and want to take the edge off of your studies or work, you can enjoy a little alcoholic beverage if your heart desires. read more

I am sad I really liked this place, a few years ago, I had thought they had their own Wi-Fi, But I went today and.............Bummers they Have "cogeco" arguable the worst Wi-Fi for an indie style espresso shop! It honestly makes the whole experience bad! Wi-Fi and Coffee/Espresso go together, as does fine baked goods. I put my laptop away, took my Latte to go. And frankly won't be back, and that's a shame that an Indie style espresso shop would have a drip style Wi-Fi like Cogego. You are limited, and have to re sign in, with your email to boot. I will miss the Coffee here and the Baked Goods, but Ottawa and the Finch are better choices for a complete experience. read more

I ordered vegetarian sandwich, my 18 year old a bagel With cream and regular coffee. Am amazed at how delicious everything we ordered are. I am not coffee drinker but for some reason their coffee is delicious. Your talking about their regular coffee. Anyway, I find that this is full at 3ish on a Saturday, with patrons from 3 year old who rode His bicycle to the shop to babies who walked in with their pop and grandma. It was full. There was also a group of two who were In some sort of a book club. I noticed bec both of them where carrying the same books. Geez, I forget the title but am deviating here. I like the fact that they have a bucketful of toys And books each for Children. In that short amount of time we were there, I read three books to my 3 year old. The only thing that pissed me off is that there were two uni students who brought an extra large cupful of Coffee from McDonald's, blatantly showing their buys, settling Into tables and doing there group meeting. Boy, this is a small business that needed to be patronized. Where is the character in all this intelligence? Sorry am Deviating again, I can't help. I almost barked at this ladies but I held myself. If the Owners politely asked if they wanted anything, would other patrons be turned off by asserting themselves? read more

So I wasn't really sure what to expect with this place. The thing that really sold me to go was the name of the cafe. I know that's silly but I just really love the name, "My Dog Joe"! I'd say that this isn't a place to study at. It has a great atmosphere but I think it leans more towards a place you'd meet up with friends. Not that that's bad! I just got that impression. Anyways, I got an espresso and my sister got a coffee. We both really loved our drinks. A+ I didn't try their food but their chilli smelled SO good. The only thing is that the food is a bit more expensive than average (spend $10-$15 per person on a full meal) but totally worth it because not only is it good, but you are also supporting local businesses. Really disappointing. I used to love My Dog Joe, my mom and I would go often. We went this afternoon and the quality has seriously declined since becoming the Paisley. Before we ordered, the man in front of us informed the staff that his coffee was cold, so she re-heated it for him. Then we ordered, and we were served the same cold coffee. She made us a fresh cup only after we tried the coffee and told her it was (still) cold. I ordered the chicken sandwich. It was so hot that it burned my hand when I tried to pick it up. Once it cooled it tasted great, but now, 3 hours later, I am experiencing stomach cramps and nausea. :( I would not recommend this place anymore! It makes me very sad to say this, because I loved My Dog Joe. read more

As an international student who has just moved to Hamilton, I see it necessary to quickly find a comfortable space to grap a cup of coffee, have some light food, and get work done. I found the coffee shop during a cursory walk through Westdale, and I was immediately struck by the facade of My Dog Joe and noted that this seemed to be a place where I could anchor myself for a bit without; a place that seemed to be "my speed." After a friendly staff greeting, I perused the large menu which boasted an array of good food and drink, including panini options, salads, baked goods, cold drinks, hot drinks, and various other options for fairly reasonable prices. With plenty of vegetarian options, my girlfriend was able to feel flexible in choosing food and drink. I opted for the vegetarian panini, featuring fresh tomato and avocado with havarti cheese on a well-toasted panini. It was accompanied by three green olives. To wash it down I also purchased an iced peachtree tea, perfect for the late August day. The panini was quite tasty and quickly prepared, and the tea was perfectly sweetened. The atmosphere was very promising for continued visits. Local artwork dots the walls without being overbearing. Couches/wingback chairs provide options for relaxing and pecking at a laptop, and tables specifically marked for groups of two or more were available in the seating area. The local crowd was quiet and reserved, focused on work--at my arrival it seemed to be mostly students. Background music was not overbearing, and just loud enough to mask out other noises. As a sum, I enjoyed my visit and will definitely return to try the coffees and other foods available, and would gladly bring work along with me to get out of the laboratory for a bit. The food and drink are quite adequate and the location is great. Other reviews here provide other great information--including the eye for a few alcoholic treats in the cooler for those moments you just need a cold one. While their food and coffee are great, their service was awful. We ordered coffee and some food and were sitting at a table when after not even being there an hour we basically got asked to leave. The owner came up to us and explained that because lunch time was to begin (it was 3 o'clock at this point) there was a 45 minute time limit on sitting and we would have to leave. This seemed very unreasonable as this is a coffee shop. Starbucks or second cup would never ask you to leave after 45 minutes. read more

I've been here twice when the owner has asked me to move tables to accommodate larger groups (despite the fact that there were less than six patrons in the shop), cramming me in a corner to share a table with another solo reader, and being asked to leave after 45 minutes (even though I had ordered two drinks and food over the course of my time).
