Durand coffee feels like one of those spots that only locals would know about. It's nestled in a quieter side-residential neighbourhood as you travel up the mountain in Hamilton. In fact, I almost missed it when I first came by! There's a good amount of seating inside if you want to sit down and work or chat, and the space gives off a somewhat urban-rustic, cozy vibe with the exposure brick and pipes. Savoury scones are where it's at. They dial their coffee in unpretentiously and had very quick service/turn around. I also enjoy how they put enough sugar in my iced coffee. Nice little coffee shop in Hamilton with delicious pastries and nice sunlight. There aren't too many seats here and is definitely not a place meant for people to stay and work/study, so if you're looking for a work cafe, this may not be the best option. We ordered a mocha and a oat milk cappuccino with an almond croissant. Overall, the coffee here is on the sour side (which is not my favorite)... donno if it's the coffee beans itself or the brewing. The mocha wasn't that bad, but the cappuccino wasn't that great. The almond croissant was delicious though. Very big, fluffy, and moist enough. Was a nice coffee shop to visit, but may just go back for the pastries (maybe not the coffee). read more

I seriously can't say enough how much I love independent cafes! Who knew Hamilton had so many. Located at the corner of Caroline and Charlton is this cozy and quaint cafe. There's quite a bit of space in this cafe, high bar tables near the front window for individuals who want to be alone and do some work/reading; several small tables for 2-3 people. When you walk further into the cafe, there's this 'room' (the quaint part) with some board games and books for you to enjoy! This "book/games" section isn't really for a large of friends but I guess 3-4 people who don't mind sitting on the floor/rug would be ideal. It is really comfortable here if you plan on doing some reading on a lazy weekend afternoon. The baristas are friendly and accommodating. Since this was my first time here, I asked a few questions about the drinks and the baristas didn't feel bothered by them. I would say that Durand Coffee is more geared towards individuals who want to try different types of teas as there is quite a large selection of teas. All of their teas are direct trade, loose leaf organic from Sloane Fine Tea Merchants! On this particular Thursday afternoon, I ordered a Paris Fog ($3.75) which is originally made with Heavenly Creamy Tea (creamy, velvety black tea), milk and vanilla syrup, but I changed it to almond milk with maple syrup instead. It was absolutely DELICIOUS!!! My friend ordered the "It's a Wonderful Latte" ($5), which is latte with maple syrup and candy cane. What a great combo! It is good and you can taste both the maple syrup and the candy cane! It isn't overly sweet. They serve Phil and Sebatian coffee here! It is pretty good! She also ordered a blackberry lime scone (~$3). It has good texture, buttery but light, perhaps it is due to the lime. What a great fruit combo! I liked that there is a light coating of sugar on the scone to make the aftertaste a little sweeter. Well done! Another great cafe recommendation if you're visiting Hamilton! read more

Checked it out in a lazy sunny Sunday afternoon, perfect time for some relax time and coffee, had high expectation of this place. However, the coffee was just average. I ordered cold brew, it was couple days old with high acidity, the coffee bean was under roasted, not sure what kinds of beans they used. Not all type of beans are suitable for cold brew. I tried half dozen type of beans and 3-4 different level of roast to find out what kind of bean at what roasting level produces the best taste for cold brew. I don't think they did a good job to make the cold brew. It is 2 out of 5. The latte was good, 4/5. Service and environment both excellent (5/5). read more

Lovely new little coffee shop - an oasis of sorts between Locke Street to the west and James street to the east. Had a lovely latte here on their opening day. The chocolate chunk cookie (gluten free/vegan, I think?) was a real treat! Durand Coffee has seating for about 20-25 people and is pretty spacious and comfortable inside. The seating includes some big armchairs and a sofa and the music playing from time to time is nice and soft and not too loud. The servers are friendly too! Looking forward to making this place a regular stop. read more

A great little space in a quiet neighbourhood. There is a dining area in front and a cosy nook with mismatch furnitures like couches and arm chairs. The hot drinks are overall decent but this review is the snacks. Great different choice of cakes and cookies. My favourite is the carrot cake. Moist and fluffy, with semi sweet cream cheese icing. Definitely recommend this place to get some work done or to hang out with friends. read more

as i slog through my backlog of hamilton cafes to check out, i'd say that durand is so far the best in hamilton for die-hard coffee lovers. i'm a little bit biased as they serve phil & sebastian here, a calgary-based coffee roaster that happens to be my favourite. i really like that the employee gave me an extremely thorough explanation of all the coffees they had available at the time of my visit, walking me through all of the different kinds of flavour profiles. the coffee i chose (can't remember exactly which one) was delicious, and fit the fruity description i asked for. decor-wise there's a mix of old and new - vintage, antique-looking chairs and rugs juxtaposed with modern fixtures, like the hexagonal wall shelves near the cashier. the ambiance is cozy, and there are a good amount of tables and seats, making this a great place to get some work or reading done. also i love the location, it's such a neighbourhood-type place as it's surrounded by residential buildings left and right. if you deem yourself as a coffee connoisseur, check this place out! read more

I really really love this coffee shop! First off, the ambiance is great for studying. It's a little bit loud behind the bar, but I personally like studying with some background noise and if it bothers you, you can always put in earphones. The cafe is bright and airy and they have potted plants in the corners. They have pretty large tables perfect for larger groups, but also smaller tables on the side if you want to snag one for yourself. There're outlets, however I believe there's only 4 of them (2 in the corner, 2 in the living room area), so make sure you have some juice in your electronics before heading over. There's also a nice living room-ish area that looks nice to just relax in. In terms of coffee, I thought it was really good! I ordered an almond milk latte the last time I was there, and it was great in terms of size, price and value ($3.75 S/4.25 L). They also have donuts and pastries from Donut Monster. The apple fritter looked amazing, but they have all sorts of fun and delicious flavours. This place is pretty close to my house, and it's a great neighbourhood, hipter-ish alternative to Starbucks. Super cozy and relaxing, will definitely be back! read more

Been here a handful of times and each visit is pretty awesome. Homey, hipstery feel (which is to be expected in this chunk of the Hammer), with awesome doughnuts and delicious bevvies. The chai latte could be stronger - I mean, I'd like to actually taste the cardamom and cinnamon when I get a chai latte - but their other lattes are delicious. I asked for one with a mint tea bag in, and not an eyelash was batted. Always a good sign, that. read more

It's so beautiful and calming, the vibes are very café-ish, and they have a work zone with couches and coffee tables where you can sit and chill, or have a conversation (and did i mention FREE WIFI??). The people who run it are so kind and welcoming, they made me a special drink because they didn't have the one i wanted. Vegan-friendly!! They have almond and soy milk available. What an absolutely gorgeous view out of the front windows. Beats Locke Street for ambience all day long. Food is lovely, chili was spicy! Tea in the tea pot is a nice touch. The servers can be a bit aloof even with semi-regulars but this still counts as one of my fav places to relax and work/watch the world go by. Free Street parking gives it extra points vs James or Locke. Great place, well with the visit! read more

This coffee shop is just so cute. I took a stroll here today from my house. The shop itself is really cozy and clean - great atmosphere for studying or meeting for a drink. Unfortunately I did come to Durand to grab a Monster Doughnut and it was only 1:00pm and they were gone :( - totally not their fault just sad for me! So I grabbed a Chai Latte and I was also a bit disappointed as well. It actually just tasted like plain steamed milk! I'll definitely try again and maybe a regular coffee or a latte instead.
