Last time, the white male bartender just kept ignoring me, the only PoC at his end of the bar. The white fratty-looking dudes who elbowed their way next to me, (also apparently here for the Beyoncé night with their gfs) were the ones who got his attention. The PoC bartender tho? They/she looked like they took him aside, talked to him, then took my order after what felt like FOREVER trying to get this man's attention, with him instead putting all the other white patrons before me. The PoC bartend took over & let me order, which made me feel like crying with relief. I looked at the white group right in their eyes...all who saw me and cut in, confidently knowing this bartender would choose them. There has to be a code of conduct, right? Nope...just smirks back. If I wanted to be real cynical, I would say it's a grift between staff that preys on the vulnerabilities of PoC in a predominantly white Upstate/CNY town to finally be seen with any modicum of respect after being treated as lesser...because I tipped generously for being treated like I deserved to be there. But I refuse to believe QPoC would do this to their own. And the PoC bartender seemed genuinely real, and for that, I really appreciate what they do, looking out for their fellow PoC in the space. But from where I stand, it looks exhausting to have this as a whole second job of looking after PoC and educating white coworkers on top of the actual job...I know the feeling. It's the Ithaca experience. I do have to appreciate the queer white femmes who DID treat me with kindness & grace, giving me space, letting me approach the bar to tip the PoC bartender who takes my order almost every time. The one whom I believe saw how awful I was being treated and swooped in to look out. They even told the bartender I was leaving extra tips for them. They are the allies we need in these spaces! I appreciate them. But yeah...the tall white AFAB femme drag performer who was a drag child of my white AMAB colleague...I did not appreciate how they treated me (an AFAB femme PoC) like a predator for buying him a drink. I felt less than human, and felt disgusting being treated to a buffet of the twisted type of racialized microagressions only white queer folks can deliver. It made me never want to return. And I didn't for a long time, even when I tore it up so much on the dance floor that Spirit Posse gave me swag. The PoC of this space make it humane. But that same night...I saw a white woman inappropriately grope a Black person performing on stage. They had to remind her about consent, which they likely made a regular thing because of how often it happens at Thursgays. I didn't see her at the last couple ones when I returned to go back to supporting friends who perform...but they really need to do better to make this space safer and less stressful to exist in as a PoC. It's not worth me being the "Duke" of this joint if I can't relax and enjoy the show, the drinks, or the dance floor. They may not be the Trump flag waving folks 30 mins away, but this is a Get Out flavor of distress I don't think makes it worth return visits.

The evening turned into a lively night. Watching the young cast navigate those first-night jitters with such grace became a joy. The audience felt their excitement in every note. Walking through those doors brought back a flood of memories--most notably, our best man Andrew's wedding. Rare to find a space that can host both life's biggest milestones and the budding dreams of local actors. The Hangar has built a reputation for excellence. I feel proud to support it.

Parking was a breeze which was really nice - the theatre is also conveniently located so you can hop right back on the road and head home after seeing a show if coming from Rochester region. I loved that they served finger lakes wine at the concession stand, and all of the volunteers and staff I encountered were wonderful and helpful. We went on a HOT day, and I wish for the outdoor stage they would have sprung for a covered option. The bulk of the audience were boiling by the time the razors came out, and we still had two hours of murderous fun left to go. The show itself had its great and not so great moments (I am not sure if it was a budgetary thing but the set for this show was...off putting. I don't need to be reminded that they're eating humans in word form on the set - there's a Greek chorus to remind me every other scene! Also, there were pretty severe issues with the mix and sound. Forgetting to turn actors mics back on, inability to hear the orchestra at times, etc.) Overall the cast and team at Hangar absolutely did the best they could given the circumstances all theatres are being forced to operate under right now, and I am SO GLAD to be out watching theatre and making snide comments about sets again! If there's a show you love playing here - go go go! Broadway talent and stardom in FLX!

I love it whenever I hear the Alma Mater (Far Above Cayuga's Waters). You can also request to have the chimesmasters play for your wedding (just put your request in early because there is about a 4 year waiting list!) when you get married at the Sage Chapel! Many Cornellians get married here, including a former head chimesmaster (I'm referring to you, Cathy J)!

We went on a Monday, so it was completely empty, which only made it feel more like a secret hideaway for people who appreciate a little offbeat charm. It has calming properties that help people be more social similar to alcohol but without the negative effects. It does taste pretty bitter and it has a numbing sensation (similar to sichuan peppercorns) so their flavored options are recommended for first-timers. The apple cider version was pretty good. I did feel the effect, but did I love it? Honestly, not sure. It felt a bit weird. But even if I decide not to try kava again, their tea was also really good and the owner is a super nice and interesting guy. People who come here are looking for something different, so give it a shot! The inside definitely looks like it used to be an elk's lounge or something. But overall, it's a chill and relaxed space with good vibes.

Saturday's attempt at enjoying Michaela Anne and The Wood Brothers was my first and likely last…read moreexperience at the Ithaca Theatre. Short and to the point, its effort to be a social club and theater simply doesn't work...the establishment caters well to neither when combined. While I enjoy drinking and good music as much as the next, there is little room for movement, drink sale lines compete for bathroom lines along stair wells, and face-to-face communication can only occur standing in clogged thoroughfares. For those who attend to enjoy the performance, good luck with that. There is constant clamorous socializing occurring, even during a primary, otherwise spectacular event. The audience is never settled, endlessly getting up to grab another drink or to go to the bathroom, requiring all those between them and the isle to exit the very narrow seating rows, to let them out, then in, then out,...You get the picture. Think I'm kidding? Reach out to Michaela Anne (opening performer), who initially threw the audience a clear "hint" that performing amidst the clamor was not easy. For her finale, she explicitly asked that listeners attend to the important message within her next song (ironically, about respect for others), though to no avail. Dismissive or oblivious to either plea or the 'shushing' of those who wished to listen, the socialites did not yield. Despite clear signs stating that no photos or videos are allowed, ushers could be seen capturing the performance with their phones. For those who do not partake or care for exposure to a certain plant and practice that was recently legalized in New York...beware. Eventgoers were subjected to a notable amount of second-hand smoke from the lucrative herb. Did we not get rid of second-hand smoke in enclosed public spaces? I guess this smoke is different. The last bit of folly and experiential impact is the lack of seating etiquette and encouragement by staff. Rather than take to the isles or rear to move or dance, participants simply remained in their seating space, often brushing or hitting those beside or in front of them. Accordingly, once one group gets up in place, so do those behind them if they wish to see the performance...then those behind them, and so on, until everyone in the audience has to stand if they are to observe any of the performance...all to the disappointment of children and those less able to stay standing. Need I say more? Don't believe me?...You'll see.
