Went to Modern Ohana for dinner on a busy Sunday evening and had a great meal. Started with the Ahi Tuna Tacos and the Pork & Prawn Dumplings and both were terrific - great flavors. Also had the Teriyaki Steak & Shrimp and the Coconut Shrimp Platter and enjoyed both. The Mango Sundae provided a nice finish for dessert (we were too full to try the other dessert choices ) Our server Kayla was friendly and helpful. A family friend who loved MIX recommended that we try Modern Ohana after the relaunch. He wasn't sure what to expect from the change, and since we'd never been to MIX, we didn't have a frame of reference. My mother-in-law was with us so we decided to all give it a shot. Ohana means family, after all. To start, the cod fritters were good but the sweet potato fries were amazing with that sweet peanut sauce. I also really enjoyed the Sticky Guava Glazed Chicken, but the fried rice that came with it was the only thing I didn't care for. It was too dry and crunchy, but it wasn't bad enough to take away a star with everything else being so good (and the high praises from my wife and her mom). The photogenic tropical drinks were fun and tasty. I preferred the Jungle Bird, but my wife fell in love with the Pineapple Upside Down Cake Martini as soon as she took a sip. Since we were celebrating a special occasion, we somehow found room for both the molten lava cake and banana split cheesecake. Both were good, but the lava cake was mine and I enjoyed every bit of it. We went during an off-time, so the restaurant was quiet and relaxing. I found this place online. Hawaiian style food on the East Coast? It intrigued me... It's a nice space. They have indoor and outdoor dining, you can sit in the dining room or in the bar. I sat in the bar, and I thought it had a nice little tropical theme. There were a lot of choices on the menu, it leaned toward a Hawaiian/tropical theme. My server was Tina.. very knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. I started with the blue Hawaiian mocktail. Pineapple & Lime Juice, Coconut, Blue Curacao Syrup, and Soda. I was curious about the blue Curaçao, but she assured me that the syrup is non- alcoholic. For my dinner, I chose the big island Loco moco, and I've heard about the pineapple soufflé, so I decided to give that a try. The drink came. It Was a "tiki drink", right down to the little paper umbrella. It was smooth, and it was not over sweet. None of the items in the drink Took over any of the other. You could taste everything. I really liked it. A traditional Hawaiian loco moco is rice, a hamburger patty, with gravy on top, and then an egg on top of that. This was the "cheffed up version," and it was excellent. The traditional loco moco has white rice, this one had fried rice. Instead of regular fried, rice, they used jasmine rice. The rice was delicious. It was like your regular fried rice, amped up a notch or two. The "steak burger", was tender, and seasoned extremely well. The gravy was a rich beef gravy, and the eggs were done just the way I like, with the yolky goodness dripping down into the food. The green onions and fried shallots on top, added a nice little contrast to the richness of the food I got through everything except some of the fried rice, and that came back to my room for breakfast tomorrow morning. The pineapple soufflé was perfect moist on the inside, without being gummy, like some soufflés can be. You could definitely taste the pineapple, and it also had a little chunks of pineapple on the inside. It was perfect for dessert. The prices were on the higher end, but reasonable. The only thing I could possibly say, was the service was a little bit slow, but not too bad the restaurant was about half full, and they had only two servers working, plus the bartender. That's not their fault that they were understaffed, and they did the very best that they could. Just an overall excellent experience. Thank you! read more

Oh my goodness. I just got back from an Ithaca wedding. The food in Ithaca is very good. This restaurant served an excellent breakfast. I had some pumpkin pancakes that were so flavorful, and guava juice. I tried my husband 's extra banana pancakes. The menu was so extensive, and the choices outstanding. The two severs were exceptionally friendly. If I lived in Ithaca, I would go here weekly for my breakfast, and try the lunch/dinner options. I wish this restaurant was in my hometown. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical of Modern Ohana given their extensive menu, but I really enjoyed everything I tried here! We weren't too hungry, so we didn't order any appetizers, but my sister did order the pineapple upside down cocktail (even though it's a dessert drink) which was tasty. Very sweet, definitely meant for dessert. For mains I tried the salmon, kahlua pork tacos, and the ribs. They were all really yummy! I loved the pinapple souffle! This was my favorite bite. I would return solely for the pineapple souffle! I love a good sweet-savory combo and it paired really well with the salmon! The ribs were also good, sticky and sweet. Pork tacos were also really good! I liked the slaw they put on top. The fried rice was also surprisingly tasty. I am very picky about my rice- I find it is often bland and don't love the texture. Their fried rice however, was flavorful and done well. The beans that came with the tacos tasted a little bit like the sauce on the salmon, which I liked... not your average beans though. Desserts were great too! No surprise. The molten chocolate cake was my favorite. Maybe it's basic, but the warm cake, gooey melty center, and cold icecream... perfection. The brownie cheesecake was also yummy, and not overly sweet like I was expecting. Still sweet, but not overly so. The passionfruit creme brulee was unique- tangy and creamy. We came for dinner during Cornell graduation weekend and was expecting this to be the worst meal. However, it ended up being my favorite! We also went to Gola Osteria (which I usually love, but during Grad weekend the food was far worse than all of my other visits), and The Inn at Taughannock (horrible service/management and mediocre food). Our waitress was very kind, hospitable, friendly, and so great with allergies! She triple checked everything was safe and truly did her absolute best to make us feel comfortable and taken care of. My kids took me here for Mother's Day and it was amazing! Our server Tina was phenomenal, very knowledgeable of the menu items. Loved the decor. I got the Hot & Spicy Shrimp Saute and the Missionary Downfall for my drink. It was a generous portion of food and the drink literally put me on my back. Very pleasant surprise in Ithaca? Who would've thought there would be a Hawaiian restaurant serving authentic food in Upstate New York? Well, here it is.... We stopped for breakfast - got the "Plantation Plate" with a pork chop, as well as an omelet. Overall the food was great, service was pleasant, and the environment very island-like. We could have done away with the generic "island music" that's unfortunately authentic to places like Waikiki...generic reggae, etc. That's probably more my problem than theirs, ha! We sat down and waited 12 minutes before silverware was put on our table or anyone acknowledged that we existed. I ordered the patty melt smashburger with impossible burger meat. I was served a hockey puck that was overcooked and slapped together. When I told the server that this was not a smashburger she argued with me! She said they couldn't do a smashburger with impossible Burger meat. I was speechless, but only for a moment. I let her know that a smashburger was indeed very possible with it. Plant-based meat and I had done it myself many times and have ordered it in many other eateries. She said she could not take it off of our bill. Although she did apologize that the food was not what I expected and offered to bring it back to the kitchen so they could "flatten it". My brother and I brought my mom here for Mother's Day. She had been talking about wanting to try it because she really enjoyed the restaurant when it was Mix and couldn't wait to see all of the changes. The food and service did not disappoint! Our waitress Tina was so nice and welcoming. I ordered the pineapple upside down cake martini and my mom ordered the missionary downfall. Both drinks tasted really good and we loved the tiki cup and decorations. My brother ordered a beer, I can't remember what the name was, and Tina was so helpful with helping him make a decision. I love that the menu has the shared plates and entree options. I ordered the fiery Szechuan edamame and Thai green curry mussels, my mom got the hot and spicy shrimp sauté, and my brother got the island pua 'a duo. Everything smelled so good and tasted just as good. Once we finished eating Tina brought over the dessert tray that displays all of the desserts to choose from. I had to try the lilikoi crème brûlée and my mom ordered the peanut butter and chocolate dessert. (I can't remember if it was a pie or cheesecake) Both were amazing! I was so impressed with the passion fruit flavor in the crème brûlée and the peanut butter and chocolate dessert tasted just like a Reese's cup. Tried the calamari for an appetizer, and had a paradise. Margarita, both were very good. I got the pork sandwich, which was a slow, roasted smoked pork with tons of flavor and a pineapple slaw on it, which was delicious. My wife got the Ramen and my son tried the jerk barbecue sandwich. Finally, my daughter got the fish tacos, which were very good as well. For dessert, we tried the tiramisu and a cookie dough or turtle cheesecake, which my family raved about. Great place to take a family or a date or to even grab a drink and good quality meal by yourself without breaking the bank. We were regulars at Mix and were excited about the new Modern Ohana but it has far surpassed even our expectations! We have been for brunch twice and dinner twice already. It is good to see old favorites on the brunch menu like the chicken fried steak and new takes on the delicious pancakes, French toasts and waffles. The tropical pumpkin pancake is even better than the original. As for dinner the pork duo and the hapu will both be regulars for me. Honestly even the broccoli is worth trying! I also highly recommend the pineapple soufflé. Mix is known for her cheesecakes and the new banana split cheesecake is wonderful. And fun new cocktails to boot! We love the new interior and are so happy it is the same staff that make the whole experience worth every penny! read more

Sadly, it appears that the new Hawaiian version of Mix is no better than the old Mix. At this point I'm thinking it's gotta be an issue with owner or management. What else can it be? When the place was called Mix the food was passable but the service we'd experience during dinner was ridiculously bad. They were consistently severely understaffed. Every time we went there we felt like we were being punked. When the restaurant isn't even remotely packed but it takes like 40 minutes for the server to come to your table to ask for the drink order, and then another half hour till you get your drinks and finally get to order food, it's a problem. And then, when you show up all dressed up with a Valentine's Day dinner reservation only to be told you'll have to wait HOURS to be seated (and eventually just leave instead), solely because they're insanely understaffed (on Valentines Day!), there's a problem. These are just a few of our unpleasant memories at the OLD Mix. Now Mix has redesigned their interior and their menu and rebranded as a Hawaiian restaurant called Modern Ohana, but unfortunately it appears they haven't resolved the service issues. Does this restaurant have a manager running the Front of House during dinner service? Have they ever had one? To us, it doesn't appear so. Our experiences there continue to leave us confused. My family ate dinner at Ohana at 7pm last Saturday night, and the restaurant wasn't packed, but it took ages for our drinks to come out. We didn't complain about it, but the server apologized for the delay and told us the bartender was depressed or going through something having to do with a pet raccoon. The food was ok but not great. And while they no longer appear to be understaffed in terms of servers, I'm not sure what some of the staff are doing back there... In front of the door to the kitchen there is a small partitioned off area of the dining room. You can't see behind the partition but it abuts dining tables, and the partition doesn't go up very far, so if you're sitting in the dining room it's easy to hear what's happening behind the partition . We feel like some servers / other staff might have just been standing back there and hanging out and possibly... vaping during dinner service? We repeatedly heard big coughing fits and fits of loughter. We didn't see or smell anything, but it honestly sounded like we were listening to a smoking circle. It was weird. After delivering our food, our server was absent for a long while -- we were looking for her and hoping she'd come check on us just once to make sure our meal was okay (she didn't, until we were nearly done with our meal and I finally was able to flag her down to tell her that she had forgotten to bring the side we'd ordered.) The same thing happened later at the end of our meal. The restaurant seemed sparsely populated. There were other servers who appeared to be on top of things but we weren't lucky enough to get one of those. After a while of waiting and hearing the coughing and laughing happening behind the partition, she finally came around the corner and we got to ask for the check. (We had originally planned to order desert as we were celebrating a birthday, but the vibe was off so we ended up deciding to call it a night.) I cant help but feel like this place needs one of those restaurant-fixing reality show dudes to come in just to teach the owners how to properly staff and manage their Front of House. As for the meal, the ribs were decent, the fish was bland, and the most interesting thing that ended up on our table was a Hawaiian pineapple soufflé side dish that came with the dinner and was very tasty. We had high hopes for the New Hawaiian version Mix, but we got a just okay dinner at Modwrn Ohana... one that I honestly wouldn't have even bothered to review if the service we'd experienced had simply been normal. Our household will not be giving Mix/Ohana any more chances, but we wish them well, and hope they get their act together by hiring a good front-of-house manager to improve the quality of their dinner service. read more

Came here for our 24th anniversary - it was my second time here and my husband's first. SO many fantastic dishes to choose from it was really hard to choose. I got a couple of appetizers including the hoisin pork and goat cheese quesadilla and the amazing ginger pork and prawn dumplings; my husband got the Caribbean jerk ribs with wonderfully scrumptious pineapple slaw and sweet potato fries. Cocktails by Lex were fantastic! We were so full but had to take home leftovers AND a couple of desserts. This place is excellent, with reasonable prices and personable servers to boot! read more

This was our second dinner at Modern O'Hanna. The food was excellent, we had the pulled pork and goat cheese quesadilla, cod fritters, sliders and Hawaiian Grouper all were great and recommended. At a previous dinner we had the chicken and waffles, Sriracha chicken wings , and island calamari all excellent. The service was also very good. The change in the menu leans brunch less lunch. Food was ok. Great new addition is Kona French press coffee This is the first time I was seated in the back room and not in the bar room. I did not like that at all. Table too close together and LOUD! More like a truck stop diner feel. Portions are large with nice presentation. I had the crab omelette. Forgot its name on the menu. Having lived in Hawaii for 13 years, we were curious as to how the food would be here. I wouldn't call it traditional Hawaiian but I will say that it was amazing!
