A very good selection of beers. Many of my local tap houses have too many super hoppy beers which are fine but this place has a wide selection of some non-hoppy ones that go down easy. Aptly named, the pub is in a poorly-lit cellar of an old building, but don't let that throw you off. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Beers were good, especially the pumpkin ale, but I was a little thrown off by the light colored root beer that came with the flight. Cheese curds were good, but somewhat different than what I was familiar with. These were cut into squares rather than being chunky pieces, but the beer batter was great. My boyfriend and I both got side salads with our sandwiches, and we did appreciate the fact that the salads were composed differently, since he got a honey mustard dressing and I got Caesar. I feel like the chef here did a good job of thinking out of menu items. If we ever are back in Appleton, we'd probably stop in again. read more

My latest visit to Stone Cellar confirmed my previous observations. The atmosphere is still cool and dark with minimal distraction from TVs. I love the rock walls in this place. You must sit in the bar area for the best experience. I have never sat in the "dining room", but it does not look like I would enjoy it. The beer is still good. The Stone Cellar stout, Vanishing Vanilla stout, and the Tilted Kilt Scottish ale were all enjoyed. A special surprise was that they had Bell's Hop Slam on guest tap! You know I had to have one of those as well. For the first time since I started coming to Stone Cellar, we sampled the soda. The orange creme was very tasty. The blue raspberry was a little too much like Kool-Aid for my taste. I only took a few sips of each, but my companions that had ordered them seemed to enjoy them. Unfortunately, they were out of the root beer. Maybe next time. The service continues to be the reason that I cannot give Stone Cellar another star. Once again, the servers are generally pleasant, but I am looking for a little more attention to detail. I don't know if it is because I am not a regular, or perhaps I don't understand how service works in Wisconsin. It might also be that I usually sit at one of the high bar tables and they are too far from the taps. Whatever it is, the drink service is slow. At one point three of us were without beers for about 10 minutes. I went over to the bar and ordered myself. It was not very busy. I hate that society has decided that we must have straws in every glass of water. I hate it even more when I have to keep telling the server NO STRAW. On a related note, any fine beer place should understand the benefits of making ample water available. You don't have to assume that everyone wants water (although they should), but if I am drinking your delicious, high alcohol beers for hours and I order a round of water for everyone, then please keep it coming. I will tip accordingly. So despite the bitching, I do like Stone Cellar. I just cannot help but compare them to other places that I have been. Those places have a little something extra and they got 4 or 5 stars. So Stone Cellar just needs to step it up a little. Meh. Stone Cellar may, as so many on Yelp claim, be the best restaurant in Appleton, but that doesn't mean it's a great restaurant as so many Yelpers claim. Three of us dined there and found the service to be subpar and the food mediocre. We ordered Copper River Sockeye Salmon (only in season now) and there's no way that's what we received. And, it was overcooked, dry and flavorless. My companions both ordered steak, which was decent. The overarching component of all three meals was lack of salt. Do they not season anything in Wisconsin? Salt. It's a flavor enhancer. Tell the chef, huh? The appetizer we ordered, duck wings, was served to our party of three with four legs. (Most servers would simply ask if you want an upgrade to 6 for a table of three, right?). The duck wings came in a bowl with no plates for any of us. Odd. We ate off of cocktail napkins. The ambience in the restaurant is fine. You're in a cellar, so it's a bit dark, but that's not a big deal for us. Noise level was fine. The clientele were very mixed. Well the pizza tour continues. We ordered the Cajun kettle chips for an appetizer. They came out cold and not very flavorful. We figured the chips would have been freshly fried then seasoned but they must have them in a bag in the back. One of the dipping sauces was good though. We then ordered our standard pizza. I would say it was a good pizza, it had a seasoning sprinkled over the top of it which added to it. I am not sure if the pizza would as awesome without it. My friend got a bloody mary and she said it was really spicy she also enjoyed the cream soda. The night we went the service was on time but the place wasn't busy and when it did get busy we saw less of the server. The bathroom is nice but a little hard to find. read more

Enjoy an elevated version of bar food at this local brewery. Locally raised bison and elk with fresh ingredients make the menu a two above the rest. The regular beers are consistently good, but look for seasonal delights such as the smoked porter. The atmosphere brings to mind an olde tavern or cellar dwelling. Make sure to connect to the WiFi because you will get no cell reception here. The management is very friendly and supports local homebrew groups. read more

Yum, this place is great. The beer selection is really good (and you can buy $8 six-packs of all their beers - their delicious root beer is cheaper). I love the atmosphere (you are really eating in a stone cellar), and the food is pretty good and reasonably priced - the pizza, however, is really, really good, and is for sure the best thing they have. This place has changed names (and probably owners) like three times since I was a kid, but it's gotten better with every change, as far as I'm concerned. I remember a brief period in which they had an extensive selection of really bad Mexican food. Yech. Things have improved, for sure. read more

I usually come here for the beer. This is one of the great places in the Fox Valley for craft beer. You will either love or hate the ambiance. It is literally in the cellar of an old stone building. Cool or creepy? You decide. I vote cool. The beer selections are great. Just pick one and enjoy. We also had some of the burgers. Duck tenders made a great appetizer - yum! I had a buffalo-bacon burger with blue cheese. Very good. My tablemates also liked theirs. They had house made soda to treat the little one. I am not sure of the flavor, but it was bright blue. I have frequented this restaurant since I was a kid. Recently, they added more of a "Farm to Table" flare, which I was very happy to see. They use local cheeses, vegetables and meats from the area and everything on the menu is excellent. I still dream about their Four Year Aged Cheddar Burger. Completely drool-worthy! Oh yeah, their beer is great too. The last time I was there I tried the Pumpkin beer, which was phenomenal. I haven't been disappointed here yet. We went to Stone Cellar Brew Pub for Friday night dinner. We got there at 5:30 and it was already packed - almost always a sign of a good restaurant! Luckily they had a bar upstairs where we could hang out and wait until our table was ready. We were able to get their brew up there and my hubby had a chance to chat up the brewer - again we are beer nerds so it was super fun! The Pumpkin Spice was AWESOME! It is in my top 3 favs for Pumpkin beer. The English Six Grain was really good as well. Since there was 6 of us, we were able to try a number of different things. Being Friday and in WI, I had to try their Perch dinner and it was yummy! Would definitely get it again. One of my friends also had it and liked it a lot. I had their Sweet Potato fries and they were very good. Hubby had Navarino Farm's Chopped Elk Steak and he raved about it. Mom had Chicken Caesar salad which was huge so only ate half. Dad had Baked Haddock which he thought was really good. Another friend had Grecian Pasta Liguini which was really tasty as well. We shared Pumpkin Creme Brulee - very good!! The fact that this place has such good reviews makes me feel a little crazy, but I don't have anything to go on apart from my personal experience: We started with the spinach and artichoke, which was barely warm and a little bland for my taste. I chalked it up to the fact that they were very busy. No big deal. I got my soup, their house corn chowder, before the meal. You would think that a signature soup would be good, but the chowder was SO thin and under seasoned, it was like frozen corn kernels thrown into a cup of hot milk. I had to load it up with salt and pepper to make it taste like anything, and even then I couldn't finish it. So maybe that's just me. Perhaps I need a little more salt and spice than the chef likes to put on the food. My companion agreed with my opinion, but none of this was really a problem. But the main course, which the waitress specifically recommended to me, was the Jaeger Schnitzel, and it was terrible. The pork was fried so hard and so dark that I could barely cut it with a knife. I ate two bites and gave up. The spaetzle was fine and the sauce was tasty, but by this time I was completely soured on the whole experience. I want to like this place. The server we had was top notch: friendly, attentive, etc. The location is great, the atmosphere is fine (church pew seats were uncomfortable, but whatever). Maybe I just need to find "my dish", but I don't know how many visits I'm willing to spend searching. read more

I would have loved to split my review between the restaurant and the food. Because I can't, I am basing my review off the food. The restaurant itself is easily a 4-5 star rating, it's very neat looking with a cool atmosphere! The food is another matter... The menu is basically chić pub-food. Nicely fitting in the atmosphere. I have eaten there twice, and been thoroughly disappointed each and every time in the food. The first time, the sandwiches were so soggy, they were not able to picked up and eaten. The bread was mush... I do not remember what kind of sandwich it was as it a few months ago. Fast forward to July 2016, and there is no improvement. The pulled pork was okay, not worth the $9 price though I don't feel, and lacked the BBQ flavor I was expecting. The $16 Shepherd's Pie was horrible. It was bland, and the mince tasted greasy more than anything else. Easily the best part of the meal was the buttered bread that came with it. I have been to Europe multiple times and I know what Shepherd's Pie is supposed to taste like. The pretzel appetizer is supposed to be great, and so we had that too. It was just a freshly baked/warmed pretzel with some mustard dip. Don't expect anything more special than this. It wasn't bad, just nothing special. It could have came from a package of frozen pretzels from Sam's Club, been heated up, and I wouldn't know the difference. I've tried this place twice in hopes that I just had a bad experience, but I am finished with the high-priced sub quality food here. I love the atmosphere at Stone Cellar. It's darkly lit and has stone walls (no kidding, right?). This isn't just any place to eat. It has a distinct character and atmosphere. The hostess seated our group of six downstairs. There were not very many other diners there for a Sunday lunch, but our service was not any more efficient as a result. Our waiter was friendly, even though he was not overly attentive. My boyfriend and I split a thin crust pizza, and I wasn't too impressed. I've tried just about every pizza sold in Appleton, and this one was very average for a thin crust. The crust was not both crispy and chewy, like most of the best thin crust pizzas. Instead, the crust was more cracker-like and tasted just a couple steps above a frozen pizza. It was pretty oily, too, even for a thin crust. This required a lot of napkin blotting! 2 stars for the pizza, 5 stars for atmosphere, 5 stars for awesome vegetarian options. I would love to come back here to try some of those veggie options, like the portobello mushroom sandwich. This is one of Appleton's solid restaurants and I look forward to coming back. Stopped going here years ago - remember why. Haven't been to Stone Arch for years - decided to try again tonight and was very disappointed! The staff and service were fine but food was horrible. I ordered the brewhouse chicken sandwich - my wife ordered the Tuscan chicken sandwich. The chicken in my sandwich was cold and little bigger than a poker chip. My wife's was hot, also about the size of a poker chip and the sandwich called for portabella mushrooms of which there was one small piece. For the $30 price tag (including 1 soda) I expect more. I agree with the naysayers here -- the boyfriend and I had lunch at the Stone Cellar, and it was just plain bad, for the most part. The restaurant is down by the river, so the parking lot is pretty tight, and the restaurant itself is in, you guessed it, the cellar, past an odd variety of stores or some such. Going down the stairs felt like heading into a dungeon, and about as well-lit. In our corner booth, I felt a bit like we were being buried alive... Service was neither great nor terrible, but the food...oh, the food. The boyfriend hemmed and hawed and eventually settled on the Jaeger Schnitzel, which he thought was pretty decent. However, my fish and chips were flat-out the worst version of the dish I've ever had. The fish was soggy and greasy, the fries were nothing special, and the side of slaw was clearly out of a jar and perhaps past its best. One bite of that and I was ready to toss the whole plate. Seriously guys, with your emphasis on fresh and local and all that, HOW can you not make your own slaw, or at least buy something decent?? So when people go on about the Stone Cellar and how fabulous it is, I just quietly die a little inside and vow never to return. Portobello melt was very tasty! I would absolutely get that sandwich again. Flavorful on a super fresh soft bun, it was on point. I'm giving three stars because of the Organic Biergarten salad. An underwhelming salad which was boring and mediocre at best. While the greens were fresh, the ingredients just didn't compliment each other. Blueberries, cherub tomatoes, walnuts and some dried out julienned root vegetable (multicolored carrots??) with blocked cheese... It was not worth the price at all! read more

As far as the food goes, I'd give it about a 3. It's good, but it's it's not that amazing. The star of this place though is their beer. It's some of the best you can get anywhere. The Vanilla Stout, Marquette Pilsner, Houdini Honey Wheat and the IPA are fantastic. Try a sampler tray and you will get a nice taste of almost everything. read more

Visiting from out of town, I was excited to get some Wisconsin cheese. I can't remember what kind of cheese it was, but the fried cheese curds here are delicious with the marinara sauce. Eat while it's hot - the cheese is creamy and I'm surprised to see how they're in blocks "like tofu" as I said to my tablemates. The beer here is great too. I'm a big fan of wheat beers so the first one I had was the Houdini Honey Wheat - delicious. Out of all the beers I've ever had in my life, I think I can say this one was the sweetest. I also had the Vanilla Stout which was like "liquid breakfast" - oatmeal, coffee and vanilla. Seriously, I would like this for breakfast if it could ever be permitted. I had the jaeger schnitzel as an entree. Considering that a salad/soup is also included for these entrees, I'd say it's a great value. I had a salad, but I heard from others that the chili was delicious. Back to the schnitzel though, the pork was definitely pounded and it's consistency looked like it was dipped in tapioca starch for a light fry. This was really good and the helping of spaetzle was perfect with the creamy mushroom gravy. Service was good, but surprisingly, it was difficult to get a table on a Wednesday night for 6 people. Calling ahead of time might be good if you've got a large party. I'd definitely come back for the cheese curds and beer. Maybe a burger as I heard from others that they enjoyed theirs. read more

Pretty good stuff! The wait was quite long on a Saturday night, but we hung out in the tap room and tried some beer and munched on appetizers so it wasn't bad at all. There was plenty of space up there, and the buzzer made it very convenient. The beer: Black IPA - pretty nice! Fairly timid for the style, but not offensive. Six grain ale - I'm not entirely sure what this was supposed to be, style wise, it seems a bit confused. Nice malt profile, clean. Oatmeal stout - great mouthfeel, virtually no head retention. A nice session beer. The food: The hummus was very nice, it seemed freshly prepared which is rare. I had a bison burger of some sort with blue cheese, ordered medium rare. It was a bit more strongly cooked (Probably medium well), but not overly dry. It wasn't amazing, but it was rather tasty. The sweet potato fries were excellent. The service was great. They were obviously mobbed, but the wait staff was attentive, and the food and drinks came out quite quickly. So yeah, quite good all around, and definitely worth a visit! read more

We ordered a margarita pizza and it was comparable to a Jack's frozen pizza. No seasoning, no taste of the oven, the artichokes were not spread evenly, the garlic was over powering, and it was greasy. It tasted like a greasy garlic cracker covered in rubbery cheese. The box was the best part of the pizza. Then there was the Scottish egg. The egg was split when we got it. The egg was over cooked (it was grey on the inside). We didn't taste the bacon. This place was great. In town for a night on business and sought out a local brew pub. Staff was friendly and the food was great... Amazing cheese curds, and I had beer jacket walleye with cheesy potatoes. The fish was fresh, the batter was perfect (not too thin, not to thick) and had a great flavor to it. Didn't need lemon, tartar or vinegar... As for the beer... The IPA was great, the honey wheat was good and the scotch ale, while not a traditional scotch ale (i.e. strong ale) was good and very drinkable. Overall a good meal in a really old, cool and unique building. read more
