If there was only one thing I could do in Paris, it would be to eat all the beautiful pastries and sweets found in every neighbourhood. At the top of my foodie list was Stohrer. This place is special because it is the oldest patisserie in Paris. The founder, Nicolas Stohrer, was originally from Poland but eventually settled in the Palace of Versailles and became the official baker for the King of France, Louie XV. He also invented the 'Baba au Rhum' or Rum Baba as it is more well known. He then opened up shop in 1730 and it still remains in the same location today. Walking into Stohrer gave me a sense of excitement. Everything was displayed magnificently, from the pastries, to the cakes, savoury delights and chocolates. This made it difficult to choose just one thing, so of course, I ended up with two delectable desserts - a Tartlette aux Fraise and a Millefeuille. Both were perfect in every way - beautifully presented, sweet, creamy and delicious. I didn't get another chance to visit Stohrer again, but next time I'm in Paris, I'll make sure I visit every day! Stohrer is a small pastry shop a short walk north of the Louvre. They have been here for decades and have been serving up custard filled delights to generations of Parisians. It seemed every type of pastry was filled with custard, and that's the way I like it. Eclairs seem to be their bread and butter, but the puits d'amour is my top recommendation. For the price, it is tiny, but in the few bites you will get, you will be transported to heaven on a custard cloud. Can't put a price on that. read more

Loved...loved loved Palmier here. They are the best. I did not like Baba Au Pain as much as people rave about it. But I did not like it at 2 other bakeries either. So looks like that Rum and cake combination is not what my taste buds appreciates. Croissants are yummy, Pain du chocolate is great. Liked their Baguette. They also have small sized ones- so that you don't waste it and can buy fresh every day. Fun place with lots of choices. It's a really excellent Parisian bakery and I will return. They were out of Pistacchio macaron so I got raspberry instead, it was really great in texture. I also got a plain croissant. The prices on the croissant were really good, $1.20 Euro but the other things I got I thought were over priced. I bought some marzipan fishes for my children and they were each $2.80 so my order added up quite quickly. I assume the atmosphere besides yummy pastry is what your paying for. No seating read more

This place came highly recommended from a friend who made a few visits here during their stay in Paris. It was conveniently located 5 minutes from our Airbnb so I couldn't help going in to get myself some macarons! I wish I had gotten their eclairs, but at the time we were I didn't have the appetizer to eat too much. The raspberry macaron I ordered was very tasty. The filling tasted more like a jelly than a butter cream which I liked. Hopefully I'll get a chance to come back and check out their other pastries someday. read more

This place is especially famous for not only its pastries, however, it history of existence. They've been around since 1730. That is insane to fathom what they've been through to survive in structure let alone as a business. That's 285 years for all of you mathematicians out there. Although their pastries are good. The time and day I went which was a Sunday around 8:45 AM and they didn't have most of France's most famous pastries. I don't know if they don't make them on the weekends and some they do or if they don't have them available until their busiest times. I however, was disappointed. So, if you're planning on hitting this, acclaimed, one of the most famous bakeries in Europe; I'd suggest to not go on the weekends. You may make the journey like myself to have several pastries in mind and them not have a single one available. Of what they do have you wont be really disappointed. Although I wasn't particularly fond of the white one on the left in the box. I don't recall what it's called, nor the one on the right. I went here early in the morning with my travel buddy to get a croissant. Little did I know I was about to consume the BEST croissant of my life! We ordered the almond croissant and chocolate croissant to share and they were out of this world. I was pleasantly surprised to find chocolate also inside the almond croissant! What a brilliant pairing. The chocolate croissant was also great but not as good as the almond croissant. Since there's no seating at Stohrer, my friend and I ate our croissants at the cafe across the street (which had terrible coffee but was very convenient). We were so in love with the almond croissant that we went back to buy another, but it was sold out! I don't get the hype. I saw this place online, and every time I walked by, there seemed to be a long line out the door. I decided I would give it a shot, and I was disappointed. I got a mini eclair and mini pistachio choux pastry, and I was not impressed. The pistachio choux pastry had a very strong alcohol flavor that I wasn't a fan off. The mini coffee eclair didn't have a strong coffee taste. I think their regular sized eclairs might be better, but I would not recommend the mini pastries. Visiting Stohrer was on my to-do list when I visited Paris. Historic pastry house? Must do for sure! The shop is bright and just full of all different kinds of pastry fun. Breads, éclairs, cakes, desserts, etc. They also serve sandwiches and salads. With it being Easter week, there was even a tented table outside the entrance that showcased the Easter chocolate all in different Easter shapes--eggs, chickens, etc. We opted for some croissants and a bag of chocolate eggs. The nice chap behind the counter had a big surprise face when he asked "that's it?". And looking back now, I'm sure my order was kind of boring with the kinds of flavorful and fanciful items available. Next time, my friend. I was all about the croissants that day. Anyway, the croissants were good. Buttery, a teeny bit more dense than Liberte, but not at all heavy or doughy. My son loved the chocolate croissant--that got eaten rather quickly. He also finished the chocolate eggs over the course of the next few days so that was another winner. Glad we visited Stohrer and saw why they stand the test of time. read more

Stopped by here to pick up breakfast one morning and got croissants, salmon and spinach quiche, and a coffee eclair. The croissants here were so flaky and delicious! The salmon and spinach quiche definitely didn't skimp on salmon, and wasn't too salty/dense. The coffee eclair was a little sweet for my taste and had a strong coffee flavor, but it wasn't bad. So good that I came back for a croissant 4 times! I'm used to NYC prices, so I was shocked to buy such a high quality pastry for half the price. Also enjoyed the chocolate eclair! I would recommend getting here before 9 - the croissant I had around 11am wasn't stale, but was basically the same as the ones I eat in NYC. I found the service to be fine. The woman in the mid-30s? with curly hair was friendly and patient. The older woman seemed colder in comparison, but I wouldn't call her rude. You can't compare European service to the American waiters that live off of tips from customers. read more

Stohrer was our last stop in Paris as we were heading out of the city. We had a list of must-see places and this was definitely on the list because I am a pastry LOVER. :) We bought an Eclair and a Strawberry Tart that DID NOT DISAPPOINT. If you go to ONE bakery in Paris, let it be this one! The tart cup was buttery, flaky, crisp on the outside and fresh and soft on the inside. The tart cup was much thicker that I thought it would be and it was delightful surprise! The eclair was as it should have been. The crust held up against the wet chocolate center and chocolate topping. I would give the tart a 9.5 and the eclair an 8 - simply because it wasn't obvious that the eclair had a chocolate center. We thought the center was vanilla. One last note - be prepared to fork over your money for pastries. As with everything in Paris, they are expensive. For the small tart I believe we paid at least 5 Euro. read more

Cute little bakery in a bustling neighborhood. We got a few different things to try on our first night in Paris. The pain au chocolat was delicious: delicate and flaky with a perfect balance of chocolate. The macarons were good but a little chewier than they should have been. Our least favorite was Rum Baba. Stohrer's pastries have been some of the finest in Paris for nearly 300 years. I'm no authority on French pastry, but over all my previous trips to Paris I can honestly say the croissants and pains aux chocolats are hands-down the best I've ever tasted. How can they be so light yet so butter-laden? The eclairs are also not to be missed - they're consistently rated among the best in a city filled with superb pastry. Prices are not the lowest, but not at all out of line - especially when you consider the quality is of the highest caliber. Staff is professional & helpful. As an example, my wife wanted an eclair with vanilla filling although the filling is normally chocolate. We asked, and they agreed to make two eclairs with vanilla for the following day, same price as the regular eclairs. I guess they serve the general public just as well as kings and queens! read more

The food was delicious but I can't get over the IGNORANCE of the older woman behind the cash at this place. Yes, we are tourists and yes, we do speak minimal French but to be so disgustingly rude was just pure offensive. They don't make THE BEST pastries in the world, but frankly, this place is pretty awesome. I should note that the eclairs were a bit old but the croissants and popular pastries like pain au chocolat were good. We tried croissants, pain au chocolats and various other pastries at Laduree, Fauchon and any other bakery we stumbled across. This is the freshest, tastiest place to get a pastry consistently. Laduree served DAY OLD croissants to us, which meant they were hard and not at all what I was expecting for the quality of the place and the price I paid. Fauchon is great for pastries as well, but they can't seem to charge you the correct price for what you bought, erring on the side of overcharging you. They did have nice croissants there though. read more

We stumbled upon Stohrer Patisserie while strolling the famous rue Montorgueil and boy were we glad we did.  The most beautifully designed Beaux-Arts space showcasing the most luxurious of pastries.  Although we were stuffed from lunch, I couldn't pass up the famous eclairs singling out the signature salted caramel over the 4 other varieties offered that day.  Holy shizznitzzzz AMAZEBALLZZZZZ guys!  Seriously look at that thing, would I steer you wrong?? read more

The best croissant in Paris ever! This old school place had the prettiest food you can find and they taste sublime. My faves are the croissant and the tomato mozzarella tart. I learned from last time--however much you think you need, double or triple it! You don't want to come home and be out of chocolate in 2 days from giving it to your friends or eating it yourself. Getting back to the pastries, another morning stop during our travels was one of the older and more well respected boulangeries in Paris - Stohrer Pâtissier Traiteur, a rather large store open seven days a week in the 2nd. With a large variety of breads and pastries both sweet and savory plus multiple demi portions our selecting here were myriad and ran the gamut from a mini Croissant, Almond Croissant, and Pain Au Chocolat, to full sized Canele, Pain Framboise, Baba Au Rhum, and Mille Feuille. Largely unimpressed by the croissants and pains au chocolate and Strawberry - not crispy, not flaky, and far too dense - it was here that we would find the second of three excellent Canele on the trip and a pair of nicely executed pastries in the form of a crunchy pre-made vanilla Mille Feuille and a buttery Baba with whipped cream that held up nicely to a full shot of spiced rum. read more

We rented a studio apartment nearby. Our landlord was not available to give us our keys but he left them here for us to pick up. It isfrom him that we learned about this place. Everyone talks about their pastries. Please note that traiteur is also on their awning. So they have prepared savory (not sweet) food for you to take out. I took advantage of this one evening. My husband was volunteering at his professional convention and I knew he would be tired and not wanting to go to a restaurant. So I went here and got a take out dinner--but so better/different than any prepared take away food that we've ever had! I can't remember what we had because this was almost two years ago. But it was simply a wonderful, relaxed meal in the quiet of our apartment. I believe I did use the microwave in the apartment to warm some of the food. Although it was a bit pricy, the quality was superb and since we drank wine purchased at a store rather than at a restaurant, the price was lower than that of a mid-priced neighborhood restaurant! If you rent an apartment for your visit, I recommend having lunch out and getting food to dine in. Lunch is cheaper than dinner. A lunch stop is a nice break when doing the tourist thing. And you will probably be tired in the evening and wanting some peace and quiet after a long, simulating day. You can probably also get fixings for a deluxe picnic here. read more

We picked up a regular and chocolat croissant which were fresh and crispy and oh so buttery.
