This is one of the oldest and first accessories in Paris, and I consider it a heritage location. I really feel all the tradition and the beautiful pastries really added to my vacation and understanding of desserts I would really recommend going here when it's a sunny day, maybe not on a rainy day because there's nowhere to sit and eat your pastry. I just got the pastry quickly and ate it under an umbrella outside when it was raining and was more difficult to enjoy it that way . It is a really small location. The oldest bakery in Paris, Stohrer is a small, but cute establishment not too far off from Châtelet/Les Halles. I arrived early (before 9 am) for breakfast, and the line wasn't too bad. It wasn't until I left the store with my pastry that the queue was starting to form-- within 10 minutes! Unfortunately, the pastry options were a bit limited when I went, as I'd heard that it offered pistachio and raspbery pains aux raisins. They weren't available when I was there, but I did get a regular pain aux raisins. I'm usually not a huge fan of pains aux raisins, but Stohrer's was incredible: flaky and butter all over, I enjoyed each bite of it. I hope to return when it has more pastry options! read more

Finally tried the ever illusive Stohrer Almond Croissant, and this must be what heaven tastes like! After years of popping in and being either too late or trying on a day they don't make them I finally had the famous this mouth watering croissant. #NeverGiveUpOnYourDreams And wow! It has that right balance of distinct thin flaky layers and a melt-in-your-mouth buttery, a hint of sweet and slightly chewy dough but on the inside is a wonderful natural tasting smooth almond custard. My stay in Paris was coming to a close and with the ridiculous (in a good way) amount of pâtisseries and how they all serve delicious sweets, I needed help to narrow things down - then I found out this place was the oldest pâtisserie in Paris! I had to go. They were closed for their annual August vacation but we were lucky that they reopened the day before we left so I made a point to go the morning of their first day back and my last full day in Paris. It's a small shop and fairly nondescript. If I hadn't looked them up, it might have been like every other pâtisserie I've passed and ogled at. They hadn't opened for long and on top of that, because it was their first day, they didn't have everything. I originally planned on trying their eclairs but they had none, so we took one each of the three items they did have: Paris Brest, a lemon tart, and an apple pastry (never got the name) with a caramelized sugar glaze. Nothing was labeled (yet?). They have no seating but the sweets were packaged nicely in a box and off we went to a nearby park to enjoy our overly decadent breakfast. A note: they don't seem to serve drinks, or at least no coffee. Paris-Brest: their choux pastry is in a long eclair form, cut in half and filled with a hazelnut-based cream, topped with nuts and a dusting of powdered sugar. There are bits of hazelnut in it and I found it light and not all that sweet. It's a bit hard to eat since as soon as you bite down, the filling begins to squeeze out the sides, but I guess it's normal for desserts like this. I haven't eaten enough Paris-Brest to have a set opinion on if this is the best, but it was pretty good. Lemon Tart: I love lemon/lime desserts - it's that mixture of tart and sweet that gets to me. This place has this nice round of cream on top so the lady had to tell me what it was since it almost completely covered the filling. It's a good size with a wonderful pastry crust that wasn't soggy at all despite the filling. The filling itself was perfectly sweet and tart. The whipped topping helped round it off without being too much despite the size. Mystery Apple Pastry: this consists of finely sliced Apple on top of a pastry crust base and topped with cream and then caramelized sugar top/glaze. I wonder if they also used a pectin/gelatin mixture to make the top shiny but I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's pectin-based. The entire dessert was also not all that sweet. The apples were tender and the cream was smooth and good. The pastry base kept it all together but what made it different was the caramelized sugar on top which was what I thought made it pop. I'm a bit sad we didn't get to choose from their full menu, but perhaps that's a good thing or else we'd be there a lot longer trying to narrow down what to get. The lady was nice and knew some English. Desserts were delicious and light - not all that sweet at all, which is my complaint with pretty much all American sweets. If you're in the area and want to knock this place off on your bucket list, stop by! read more

I had a vanilla macaroon which was one of the best I had in France and I tried 4 different places including laudree. As you wait in line your eyes will widen at all the treats they offer. Rue Montorgueil was my home for my brief stay in Paris so naturally I made Stohrer my home base bakery. I mean c'mon, if it's good enough for the Queen of England, it is good enough for this Yelp Elite of four years. There are no words to describe their chocolate eclairs. Even after being stuffed in a carry on bag, flown in an airplane, discarded on my kitchen table for two days, and then delivered to my mom's house these eclairs are unbelievable. But take it from me, you want to eat them fresh so if you are in the area, please indulge in these treats. For those who really want to try a nibble of everything, this is the only pastry shop I visited that had mini chocolate croissants, beignets and cookies so you cold dole out your calories accordingly. Across continents, within the United States, and certainly in Paris: Stohrer makes hands down the best croissant I've ever had. They are perfectly flaky, perfectly moist (not overly oily), and somehow balance melt-in-your-mouth softness inside with delightful crunch outside. The pain au chocolat has many of the same qualities, but I implore you to try the traditional and phenomenal croissants. From what I've sampled of the macarons and various chocolate candies, you cannot go wrong in what you select at Stohrer. Even their various baguettes -- I recommend one with ham, veggies, cheese, and other delicious ingredients in particular -- are great for lunch on the go. Tourists (as I don't think I I'm quite at the locals recommendation level just yet): before you leave Paris, you must stop by for breakfast and/or goodies to take home that everyone will love you for. This is the oldest pastry shop in Paris! It's clear that they have used the time well to perfect their sweets (although that achievement also means they're not cheap). The Puit d'Amour means "well of love," and is a suitable way to describe this pastry. The insanely flaky crust held a pool of rich vanilla cream which was burnt on the top creating a crunchy caramelized crust. Indulgent! For a patisserie shop that is the oldest one in Paris and once visited by the Queen of England, you'd think its size would be enormous. But it's actually not. It's somewhat small. Stohrer is located in the middle of Rue Montorgueil which is quite convenient. It's convenient because it is surrounded by a lot of cafes and restaurants. So there's little reason to get dessert at a restaurant when you can pick up a famous dessert from this place. That's exactly what I did. I ate at a nearby restaurant and later purchased an éclair and baba au rhum from Stohrer. I have never been more anxious to get back to my hotel room to enjoy my treats. Next time though, I will eat them immediately after purchasing them because my baba au rhum didn't survive my journey too well. The rhum and icing separated and made a sticky gooey mess inside my bag. Prices are somewhat higher than other Parisian patisseries and boulangeries. I suppose that's probably due to the shop's notoriety. If you want to load up on lots of French pastries and sweets, my recommendation is to try another patisserie and only purchase a couple things at Stohrer. I recommend both the éclairs and baba au rhum because that's what they are famous for. By the way, there are no table and chairs. Like I said the shop is small. read more

Blessed by staying close to Rue Montigruil, we were sent to Stohrer by the owner of our apartment (and countless guidebooks). A small shop, the pastries all looked delicious, and we saw breads, pastries, candies, and some savory dishes. It was our first time in Paris, and our French was limited to "merci" and pointing. The staff is busy and business like, but they'll work with you on making sure you get what you want. One staff member (an owner?) came around and helped me pick out presents to bring home to my family. All around, a good customer experience. On to the food. My fiancé ate Pain au Raisins and chocolate filled beignets each day. I alternated between pain au chocolate (crispy, buttery, incredible), palmiers (divine, crispy, and messy). I also had a lemon meringue tart (with a cloud of meringue on top), which I loved. I was un-impressed with the cannelle pastry...it was sort of damp and sad. I eyeballed the savory offerings, but was nervous to try them (I couldn't tell what they were!). This is an adorable bakery on an adorable street in Paris. We stopped here on the way to getting our bus to Versailles and grabbed a bunch of treats to go. The two apricot macarons were only OK, but the lemon one was superb--we still think that the ones at Laduree are superior. The croissant, which we all snacked on throughout the day, was wonderful and probably the best one that we've had so far. There was also this circular thing that we didn't catch the name of, but was kind of like a palmier. Good, but a bit too chewy and sugary for our teeth. The real star of the show was the cafe eclair--holy gushing river of creamy goodness. Le heaven. Friend recommended, and after a full day of exploring, we ended our day visiting this patisserie. As others said, the shop is charming, the staff was efficient and friendly and immediately helped when I forgot a word in French! We tried three desserts: Coffee Eclair, Chocolate Croissant & a apricot tart. The chocolate croissant was the best I ever ate. Thick pieces of chocolate with great flavor. Buttery, flaky layers in the croissant - fantastic!! 10 out of 10 The apricot tart (sorry I don't know the correct name) was a work of art! Large enough for 4 people - and had FANTASTIC flavor!! Friendly note - they don't offer a knife, so that is hard to slice because of a sturdy crust when you are away from home.
