An absolute classic in Paris that is worth the hype and you must stop in! We came in the afternoon and they still had a great selection. We opted for an eclair and a chocolate croissant. The eclair was so delish with such a light and yummy pastry and and delicious cream inside. The chocolate croissant was SO flaky and delicious and the filling was to die for. These pastries were delicious and you must try!
On a mission to experience Paris's legendary pastry history, I was looking forward to trying the oldest bakery in Paris. Stohrer is located on the quaint Rue de Montergueil alongside other cute cafes and shops and was marked by a historical landmark sign that explains the bakery's historical and cultural significance. The storefront had a regal appearance, which was fitting given its rich history and designation as the birthplace of the rum baba. We arrived in the early afternoon when there wasn't a line, and the pastry case was fully stocked with a wide assortment of pastries and macarons of every color of the rainbow. I decided to try the brioche with candied citrus, and we also ordered an eclair and cream puff. I took my pastries to-go since there wasn't any seating in the bakery or outside. The brioche was decadent but not too sweet, and I noticed pieces of candied fruit laced between layers of pastry. The pastry itself was drier than a croissant, and it paired well with a cup of tea. It was such a cool experience to visit the time-honored bakery, and we'll have to try the rum baba on our next visit.
I've been wanting to try Stohrer since it's the oldest patisserie in Paris. The line was out the door, but moved very quickly. I got a little chocolate cake for 7.30 euros. It was super delicious and I liked all the layers to it. Definitely a bit pricey, but this place is super well known and popular. They have plenty of pastries and veinnoiseries available.
This is the oldest patisserie in Paris! Unfortunately there was construction outside, so it was not too attractive today! It began in 1730. They have beautiful pastries and are known especially for their baba au rum. That's just what we bought. It's delicious, but really messy, so take it to go! The service was lovely as was the interior of the shop.

One of the best bakeries in Paris we tried. The plain croissant and the pain au chocolat, a few macarons (chocolate, raspberry, pistachio) and everything was aaaahmazing!! This will def be a go-to spot in Paris!
tl;dr the eclairs are delightful, but any treat among the pastry lineup is sure to be among Paris' finest As the oldest pâtisserie in Paris, Stohrer boasts a storied history. In 1730, Nicolas Stohrer (pastry chef to King Louis XV) opened his namesake shop on Rue Montorgueil, where it still stands to this day. Among his notable achievements, Stohrer is credited with creating the rum baba. Even after 3 centuries in the business, the original shop feels timeless rather than decrepit. Expect patrons to be snapping pics outside Stohrer's gold-on-navy storefront. The flashy interior, designed by nineteenth-century French painter Paul Baudry, is more fit for a palace than a pastry shop. Highlights of the classically Parisian decor motifs include the ornate chandelier and the aqua tiled floors. The brightly lit pastry case is bountifully stocked with cakes, tarts, macarons, and everything in between. I visited on a weekday afternoon, and Stohrer still boasted a sizeable clientele. The service was professional and efficient, and the staff spoke enough English to share some solid recommendations. I took my spoils back home to share. The Baba Chantilly -- Stohrer's signature, rum-soaked Baba au Rhum piped with vanilla cream -- was not for the abstinent. Each bite of chewy cake was like downing a shot of rum without the alcoholic burn. On this pastry, I found the vanilla cream to be a superfluous addition. In contrast, the Saint Honore Vanille was vanilla-centric, highlighted by Bourbon vanilla custard and whipped cream. The glazed pastry puffs were just icing on the cake. The eclairs were probably the best I've ever enjoyed, piped with a gelato-smooth filling and topped with a well-distributed glaze. We preferred the boldly espresso-y Eclair au Café, but the deeply dark aqua-tiled Eclair au Chocolat was a delicious alternative. The personal-sized pastries cost upwards of 5 euros: a pittance for some of Paris' best. If you have time for only a single pâtisserie, Stohrer is a strong contender. While I strongly recommend the eclairs, Stohrer has a wide enough selection for even the pickiest of pastry-goers.
This is apparently the oldest patisserie in Paris! I found this spot online while looking for a pastry shop to go to on my last morning in the city. This popped up as a spot to visit, and I was sold. All the pastries looked so beautiful, but I had my eyes set on trying the kouign amann and had to resist the temptation for the others. I ended up taking it with me and bringing it onto my flight. When I ended up eating it, it was still fantastic! It was so extremely flakey, buttery, and had just the right amount of sweet glaze on the outside. Definitely one of the best, if not the best kouign amann I've had. The shop is also decorated really nicely inside and they also sell massive macarons! A great spot to visit :)
Delicious chocolates! We got some chocolates to go, including a milk chocolate with praline topping that was so rich and delicious. I also brought some chocolates to bring home. The store is very charming and even when there is a long line, it moves quickly. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.
Citron is still my favorite! We went twice this trip. Tastes exactly the same as the first time! Consistent and delish!
I follow a dermatologist on Instagram who has made a few trips to Paris. On her last trip she shared her experience buying some treats in Paris, including a chocolate eclair from Stohrer which she highly recommended. Naturally, on my recent trip to Paris I knew I had to give it a try. It is situated in the middle of this beautifully lit up street with many other small businesses. Right near the entrance is a sign detailing the roots of the business, dating back to the early 1700s! There was a bit of a line but it moved quite fast. I was worried the eclairs would be gone but there was plenty on display. I ordered and and was given the eclair in one of the pretty to go boxes I've ever seen. Outside, I perched up in the first spot I could find and gave the eclair a try! It was very delicious, not too sweet, and had the perfect texture. It didn't take me very long to finish it. It was a rather brief experience I had at Stohrer but I did enjoy it and felt it was worth going back to! If you're checking this pastry shop out it's definitely worth a try.
Very beautiful bakery with many options and affordable prices. They gave us free chocolate samples too. I got a pain au chocolat and it was delicious and loved that it came warm!
Ordered a bunch of items - a macaron, apple tarte, pan au chocolat, a honey chocolate tart, and a white chocolate ball. Overall, everything was delicious, but the service left room for improvement. They're rushing you out as soon as you walk in - even if you're still ordering like I was. Overall, yummy, but perhaps go when it's not crowded so you can peacefully pick your poison.

Delicious croissants! One of the oldest bakeries in Paris! The service was snappy especially since it was busy I felt like they did a great job (coming from someone who works at a bakery as well). The ambience was super cute, just beautiful! The macaroons were fantastic! The people behind the counter were sweet and new both French and English and were very accommodating of us being a little confusing while trying to order in our broken French before defecting into English lol! All around amazing! A little bit crowded so if you don't like that send someone else in to order for you! read more

Oldest pastry shop in Paris, and still going strong. While they have all sorts of exotic pastries, our favorites were the standard butter croissants, Pain au chocolat, and the raison croissant. The raison version is probably the best in Paris, and sells out fairly quickly. Lots of competition up and down the same street keeps the prices very reasonable. Love it! read more
We made a trip here based on several YouTube videos of must-try bakery/pastry shops. Since we came in the afternoon, there were no croissants left so we ordered two macaroons and an eclair. The macaroons were airy and just a perfect afternoon snack; the eclair was very chocolatey which I enjoyed! The staff spoke limited English and we spoke limited French but we had no issues with communication. Service is fast so browse first, then order. read more

Magnificent. One of the best bakeries in the world? They would get my vote. Went here a few times during my trip, & took baked goods home to the US. Beyond the croissants, baguettes, & sweets, I had a potato baluchon to die for. Precision & excellence. read more

The oldest bakery in Paris, Stohrer is a small, but cute establishment not too far off from Châtelet/Les Halles. I arrived early (before 9 am) for breakfast, and the line wasn't too bad. It wasn't until I left the store with my pastry that the queue was starting to form-- within 10 minutes! Unfortunately, the pastry options were a bit limited when I went, as I'd heard that it offered pistachio and raspbery pains aux raisins. They weren't available when I was there, but I did get a regular pain aux raisins. I'm usually not a huge fan of pains aux raisins, but Stohrer's was incredible: flaky and butter all over, I enjoyed each bite of it. I hope to return when it has more pastry options! read more

Pros: -Beautiful pastries -Free samples at counter Cons: -Expensive -- Puits d'amour (4.90 euro) Puff pastry filled with vanilla pastry cream and bruleed sugar on top. The cream inside was much thicker than I expected and not very sweet. The puff pastry was delicate and flaky at the bottom. This was a beautifully executed dessert, but not as satisfying as I was hoping. I would opt for another one of their delicious looking treats if I returned. read more
This place is known as the ancient pastry shop due to its history. It's been around since the 1700s!! Definitely visit this place if you're looking for a traditional yet famous French bakery. I only gave it four stars because it was heavy, but that's a really French trait for desserts. I really wanted to try the Kouign Amann but they sold out before I had gotten there (I got there around 2pm). Make sure to visit early if you plan on going! read more

Beautiful pastry shop! I had heard a lot about this famous French pastry shop so I decided to check it out and I'm glad I did. I tried the famous rhum baba with Chantilly cream and it is very strong with the rum but I thought it was still delicious (just couldn't eat it all). I also got a chocolate eclair which was absolutely amazing! The staff was really friendly and wasn't too busy when I went in the morning. Overall a great experience! read more
The oldest and most popular bakery in Paris, it is a must try even if it's not part of your taste palate. They're known for their almond croissants and you definitely want to go there early if you don't want to miss out on them! read more

They've been around for a long time... for a reason. Stohrer has the best croissants in Paris by far!! Super buttery, flaky, and warm. Absolutely amazing! I can't recommend them enough. If you're looking for an amazing croissant in an iconic place, get your's here!! read more
Not sure what the big deal is about Stohrer other than its age. The croissants we bought were bready, not flaky at all. We much preferred the ones we bought the day before at the Grand Epicerie at Bon Marche. Cute street though. read more
After endless research for pastries shops in Paris this place came up time after time so I decided to give it a try. We came here twice the first time we arrived too late and most pastries were sold out already. The next day we came back we got the Saint Honore and a passion fruit tart but didn't make it early enough for the croissant so we end up getting the pain au chocolat instead. It was so flaky and airy and just pure yumminess. Staff was nice and understood English which was a plus! read more

Finally tried the ever illusive Stohrer Almond Croissant, and this must be what heaven tastes like! After years of popping in and being either too late or trying on a day they don't make them I finally had the famous this mouth watering croissant. #NeverGiveUpOnYourDreams And wow! It has that right balance of distinct thin flaky layers and a melt-in-your-mouth buttery, a hint of sweet and slightly chewy dough but on the inside is a wonderful natural tasting smooth almond custard. It is finished with almond slivers and dusted with powdered sugar. Best spent 3€ Tip: Seems they only make them on the weekend and expect them to sell out by 11am. read more

It's time for dessert and I'm letting my mind wander. Where does it land? On Stohrer's classic eclair. Yes, the best classic eclair in Paris is here. The other pastries are also delicious. The pain au chocolat is buttery, flaky, and has the perfect chocolate ratio. I can only imagine what the others ones tasted like. But actually, I dream of this eclair. There's a reason Stohrer has been around for hundreds of years. If you're visiting Paris, there is no better location to get your fix of classic eclairs (et pain au chocolat). read more

With their long history of pastry expertise, they have a lovely, fine selection. The baba au rhum is worth the calories. Pairs well with an espresso or dark coffee. Their other items are excellent as well. read more

My stay in Paris was coming to a close and with the ridiculous (in a good way) amount of pâtisseries and how they all serve delicious sweets, I needed help to narrow things down - then I found out this place was the oldest pâtisserie in Paris! I had to go. They were closed for their annual August vacation but we were lucky that they reopened the day before we left so I made a point to go the morning of their first day back and my last full day in Paris. It's a small shop and fairly nondescript. If I hadn't looked them up, it might have been like every other pâtisserie I've passed and ogled at. They hadn't opened for long and on top of that, because it was their first day, they didn't have everything. I originally planned on trying their eclairs but they had none, so we took one each of the three items they did have: Paris Brest, a lemon tart, and an apple pastry (never got the name) with a caramelized sugar glaze. Nothing was labeled (yet?). They have no seating but the sweets were packaged nicely in a box and off we went to a nearby park to enjoy our overly decadent breakfast. A note: they don't seem to serve drinks, or at least no coffee. Paris-Brest: their choux pastry is in a long eclair form, cut in half and filled with a hazelnut-based cream, topped with nuts and a dusting of powdered sugar. There are bits of hazelnut in it and I found it light and not all that sweet. It's a bit hard to eat since as soon as you bite down, the filling begins to squeeze out the sides, but I guess it's normal for desserts like this. I haven't eaten enough Paris-Brest to have a set opinion on if this is the best, but it was pretty good. Lemon Tart: I love lemon/lime desserts - it's that mixture of tart and sweet that gets to me. This place has this nice round of cream on top so the lady had to tell me what it was since it almost completely covered the filling. It's a good size with a wonderful pastry crust that wasn't soggy at all despite the filling. The filling itself was perfectly sweet and tart. The whipped topping helped round it off without being too much despite the size. Mystery Apple Pastry: this consists of finely sliced Apple on top of a pastry crust base and topped with cream and then caramelized sugar top/glaze. I wonder if they also used a pectin/gelatin mixture to make the top shiny but I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's pectin-based. The entire dessert was also not all that sweet. The apples were tender and the cream was smooth and good. The pastry base kept it all together but what made it different was the caramelized sugar on top which was what I thought made it pop. I'm a bit sad we didn't get to choose from their full menu, but perhaps that's a good thing or else we'd be there a lot longer trying to narrow down what to get. The lady was nice and knew some English. Desserts were delicious and light - not all that sweet at all, which is my complaint with pretty much all American sweets. If you're in the area and want to knock this place off on your bucket list, stop by! read more

One of the oldest bakery in Paris! We went there at night so we couldn't try the croissants but the fruit tarts were delicious! Items sell out here so I'd suggest going earlier in the day. Also, the neighborhood it's in is a hidden gem! Lots of Paris- feel restaurant and it's packed. read more

You have to go to the oldest bakery in Paris! They invented the baba rum so its a must try. I thought the cake part was amazing but as someone who doesnt love rum it was a lot but i expected that. I had a vanilla macaroon which was one of the best I had in France and I tried 4 different places including laudree. The st honoree wasnt my personal favorite but I had to try it and it was beautifully done. All in all a great place to try different authentic pastries. read more
Quire possibly the best jambon et fromage (ham sandwich) I have ever had in my life. We entered the shop and what did we see...? A fresh lag of ham where they cut and placed this wonderful ham on a fresh baguette with the most incredible herb butter you have ever had. I will go back to Paris just to have another one. Oh, and the pastries are also really good.... Get Some!!! read more

I've never had much of a sweet tooth, but this got to be one of my favorite patisseries now! The famous eclairs and the galette de rois (king cake) is absolutely delicious! Seriously try the king cake, no regrets and I don't usually eat this sort of pastries but with this cake I just couldn't stop! Really good! MUST TRY and I can see why this is the Queen's favorite. read more
This is the oldest pastry shop in Paris! It's clear that they have used the time well to perfect their sweets (although that achievement also means they're not cheap). The Puit d'Amour means "well of love," and is a suitable way to describe this pastry. The insanely flaky crust held a pool of rich vanilla cream which was burnt on the top creating a crunchy caramelized crust. Indulgent! This is also the birthplace of the Baba au Rhum which I regrettably didn't get to try... but at least that gives me a reason to come back! read more
Holy hell they don't skimp on the rum on the alibaba.. Like dude I think I was drunk after a bite! If you like rum like LOTS of it this is right up your alley! If not yeah I'd stray away. I had the famed eclair and it was delicious! So want to visit a place in Paris that is part of history? Then visit one of their oldest bakeries here! For a patisserie shop that is the oldest one in Paris and once visited by the Queen of England, you'd think its size would be enormous. But it's actually not. It's somewhat small. Stohrer is located in the middle of Rue Montorgueil which is quite convenient. It's convenient because it is surrounded by a lot of cafes and restaurants. So there's little reason to get dessert at a restaurant when you can pick up a famous dessert from this place. That's exactly what I did. I ate at a nearby restaurant and later purchased an éclair and baba au rhum from Stohrer. I have never been more anxious to get back to my hotel room to enjoy my treats. Next time though, I will eat them immediately after purchasing them because my baba au rhum didn't survive my journey too well. The rhum and icing separated and made a sticky gooey mess inside my bag. Prices are somewhat higher than other Parisian patisseries and boulangeries. I suppose that's probably due to the shop's notoriety. If you want to load up on lots of French pastries and sweets, my recommendation is to try another patisserie and only purchase a couple things at Stohrer. I recommend both the éclairs and baba au rhum because that's what they are famous for. By the way, there are no table and chairs. Like I said the shop is small. read more
Blessed by staying close to Rue Montigruil, we were sent to Stohrer by the owner of our apartment (and countless guidebooks). A small shop, the pastries all looked delicious, and we saw breads, pastries, candies, and some savory dishes. It was our first time in Paris, and our French was limited to "merci" and pointing. The staff is busy and business like, but they'll work with you on making sure you get what you want. One staff member (an owner?) came around and helped me pick out presents to bring home to my family. All around, a good customer experience. On to the food. My fiancé ate Pain au Raisins and chocolate filled beignets each day. I alternated between pain au chocolate (crispy, buttery, incredible), palmiers (divine, crispy, and messy). I also had a lemon meringue tart (with a cloud of meringue on top), which I loved. I was un-impressed with the cannelle pastry...it was sort of damp and sad. I eyeballed the savory offerings, but was nervous to try them (I couldn't tell what they were!). We ended up at Stohrer every morning except for one (we wanted a sit-down breakfast), and I'm currently crying at my desk due to lack of decent pastry in Boston. Stohrer: I MISS YOU! read more
Across continents, within the United States, and certainly in Paris: Stohrer makes hands down the best croissant I've ever had. They are perfectly flaky, perfectly moist (not overly oily), and somehow balance melt-in-your-mouth softness inside with delightful crunch outside. The pain au chocolat has many of the same qualities, but I implore you to try the traditional and phenomenal croissants. From what I've sampled of the macarons and various chocolate candies, you cannot go wrong in what you select at Stohrer. Even their various baguettes -- I recommend one with ham, veggies, cheese, and other delicious ingredients in particular -- are great for lunch on the go. Tourists (as I don't think I I'm quite at the locals recommendation level just yet): before you leave Paris, you must stop by for breakfast and/or goodies to take home that everyone will love you for. I'm so grateful that Stohrer was my "neighborhood" patisserie during my trip to Paris. read more
Got a pan au chocolat on my way home and it is definitely one of the better ones I've ever had! Without heating it up, the croissant tasted very fresh: the layers buttery and flaky without being too airy. The chocolate was also very good quality chocolate! It cost €1.60 and was the perfect snack. read more
