I'll start by saying the 2 Stars are completely for the food. Now, on with the review. Happened to be in the area and the husband saw this place. We went in for lunch. It appeared from the start that service wouldn't be great, but the hoped it was a fluke upon entering. It was not. We ordered the pulled pork, the wings, the baked beans and the Mac & cheese. The pulled pork would have been good if it had been even remotely hot. The baked beans were good. The wings were good. The Mac and cheese was a thick velveeta type, with a LOT of black pepper (which was the overall taste of the dish) , as well as something else that that gave it a spicy taste, and I was not a fan. The part of this place that was the biggest issue was the service. The Server was not remotely friendly. It was a very uncomfortable atmosphere and made lunch one of those "let's hurry up and get out of here" processes. After a quick bit we asked for the check, which was brought over by an another employee and literally dropped onto the table. Like with a thud! He said not one word. But other than asking what we'd like, answering a question, and asking if we needed anything at one point in a non smiling monotone, that's basically the attitude of the Server we'd had also. So no idea why we were shocked. Needless to say that we will not ever, ever be returning. I think it's important to note that service counts. To many of us, it counts as much as the actual food. I'm one of those people. Customers should feel welcome or wanted at the least. The very least. There are several other options near this place. We will do ourselves a favor in the future, and try one of those. read more

I used to love coming to this spot, and last year it was one of my go-to spots. The food was great, and the portions were generous. But the last couple of times I've visited, it's really gone downhill. The most recent time was especially disappointing -- I ordered the three-meat plate, but it looked like I barely got two portions, maybe less. For the price, I expected much more. On top of that, the brisket, which used to be amazing, was dry and not tender. I'm hoping this was just a fluke, but it's definitely not what it used to be. I don't think I'll be back. Ribs have a good bite, pull away without falling off the bone, with a sweet, slightly sticky rub (but not overpowering - the meat still has good flavor). Brisket is good and tender - nice smoky flavor. Neither the ribs nor brisket need sauce, but the Carolina vinegar sauce is very good!! Use it sparingly to avoid overpowering the meat. Potato salad and coleslaw are good, but not outstanding. Coleslaw dressed nicely without being soupy. Both are average with no pronounced flavors. Add some Carolina vinegar sauce to the potato salad!! Generous portions all around - you'll probably need a to-go box. Stopped in for a quick bite while doing some work in town. COVID is not the ideal situation to review any restaurant - so keep that in mind. The menu is what you would expect for a BBQ joint. Settled on the Sliced Brisket with Cole Slaw as my side and an Andygator. THE BEST thing about this meal is the Brisket. It was VERY NICELY done. Would definitely eat this again. Cole slaw was okay but needed something. Texas toast was dry and bland. Service was good in a minimal sort of way. A/C was barely keeping up so it was muggy inside. This place was so nice! Since the moment we walked in the service was great. The restaurant itself is small but seemed pretty busy with takeout orders. We ordered the fried jalapeños/pickles and my boyfriend ordered the brisket with a side of potato salad and macaroni and cheese. I also ordered the Mac and cheese. Amazing and consistent are two adjectives I'd use to describe Sticks n Bones. If you want real deal BBQ, look no further. This place is legit. Since its opening, Sticks n Bones has always been good. It changed hands a little while back and the new owners have improved on what was already a solid restaurant. It's so good I get food there once a week or so. Here's what I like: Wings - The BEST wings I have ever had. Smoked then fried they can be had wet or dry. I suggest wet because they end up lathered in a sauce that's not hot, but so flavorful you will be licking your fingers and the container they came in. Sliced Brisket - The best brisket on the north shore and top two or three in the metro area. It is moist, smokey and that bark. Oooh that bark. Here is what usually happens when I get some to go. The moment I walk in I open the container, grab a slice with my hands, tear it in half, and eat it. I then immediately eat the rest of the slice and probably two more. No plate, no utensils, or anything else. Just my fingers and taste buds that start screaming for more the moment it hits my mouth. This brisket is worth the drive from anywhere around. Chopped Brisket - I normally hate chopped brisket because it's dry and tough. This chopped brisket is as good as the sliced and I have been known to pick up handfuls and shove it in my mouth. Am I a glutton? Yes. But guess what? It's that good. Pork - Not normally a huge pulled pork fan, this is one of my go-tos when they're out of brisket. Their version is actually smokey unlike most I've tried. It is also always moist which is also a good thing. Potato skins - Pimento cheese, pulled pork or brisket and cole slaw. It sounds simple, and it is, but it is also one of the best things on the menu. Brisket chili cheese fries - This needs no explanation. Get it. Don't share. I needed brisket in my life. So I took the short drive out here and I am so glad I did. The atmosphere is not much. It's just a typical strip mall type restaurant with some wood panels on the walls here and there. Not that I care about the decorating, but some folks like to know about the environment. Clean and utilitarian would be my description. The special happened to be burnt ends which was exactly what I needed. They were delicious, just a little bit of spice on the back end. Perfectly tender little nuggets in my opinion. The fries are good and go well with the fare, but nothing spectacular about them. And then there are the beans. Oh mother of all that is holy....THE BEANS. I haven't had beans this good in years since a local joint in Slidell closed down. They were hot and smoky with little chunks of the brisket in it. Just amazing, so much so that I got a quart to bring home to the family for dinner tonight. I can't wait to get another round of these beans in ma belly! Price seems reasonable to me. Most bbq tends to be expensive. This one is not, it's in the $10 bucks or so range for the plate and I didn't leave hungry. Visited for first time. I got pulled pork dinner and hubs got pork sandwich. Food was hot and was good for this area considering the lack of authentic competitors. Dining area was small with maybe 10 tables. There were only a few other customers due to later than normal dinner time so it seemed quiet. I have been here 5-6 times and mostly good, but since sticks opened up the second location this location has had major hiccups. It happened again today when I called in for a pick up order and thought I was getting the big juicy smoked wings. Well you can see by my last posted pictures no such thing. Skinny small BURNT wings that I had to throw away. They were So dry no matter how much water I drank couldn't eat them at all. About a month ago I swung by ( very busy I get it) and tried brisket meat platter and again very disappointed in how dry these meats are. Like it was cooked all day then microwaved before sending out to table. Like to see the old sticks back in business here when the meats are juicy, tender like freshly smoked foods should be. I didn't find it to be the best bbq in the area as that honor is still held firmly by The Joint in my ranking scale. The brisket here is alright but the serving I had was a bit on the tough side so it seemed it needed more time in the smoker to me. The brisket chili was actually better than the actual brisket and it was one of the better brisket chilis I have had in the area. I also found the serving size to be smaller than The Joint and I have to say I was left still a bit hungry and I was a tad sad there were no pickles on my brisket plate. First time trying it today. Soon as you walk in the door the bbq smell hits you and you know it's gonna be good. I got the 1/2 smoked chicken plate with collard greens and baked beans. And, like I mentioned before, the ribs were amazing. The small end was nice and crispy. As the ribs got bigger, the meat got exponentially thicker and moist. You could easily pull the larger bones out. The seasoning on the ribs were a beautiful balance of sweet, savory, and saltiness; definitely umami going on there. No sauce necessary! My husband got the sliced brisket and he said it was the best he'd ever had. He's not a fat eater, but he even savored the fat on the brisket. He also got the Mac & cheese and baked beans. Three stars because the French fries are awesome. Otherwise a hard pass based on what I ordered. You might do better with some other items. The ribs were way too dry. Good smoke. Too much heat. BBQ isn't spicy. That said, both their sauces are spicy. No matter, I don't like them anyway. That's not a Carolina vinegar sauce. The house sweet is just not my taste. They call it sweet. One word: killer! We were tired and hungry having spent several hours inner tubing down the Bogue Chitto river and not looking forward to the drive back across Lake Pontchartrain with an empty stomach. Thankfully, Stick 'n Bones came up as a nearby restaurant. They are located on what I would consider a side road next to some other restaurants (all closed by Sunday evening) and across the street from a swimming supply store. Potato skins $7.95 - are a MUST. I know you're thinking you've had potato skins before and I'm sure you have. However, let me tell you that these are the best you'll ever try! My guess is that the potatoes were baked, then hollowed, then fried to perfection. The topping with pimento cheese, meat (we tried chicken), and cole slaw was fantastic. Pork plate with 2 sides (baked beans and french fries) $10.95 - was enough for two meals. The pork was moist and just perfect. I can't say enough about the beans and the serving of fries was enough to eat as a meal by themselves. 1/2 rack ribs with 2 sides 15.95 - also fantastic. There was plenty of meat on the bones to feed more than one person (although only one person ended up eating all of them!). The place was busy from when we sat down until when we left. Some customers were familiar with the staff, which was lovely to see. My only regret was not getting chili cheese fries. I think we'll have to go back next time we're on that side of the lake! read more

Being I'm from Florida you may ask how does one find a little BBQ joint in Mandeville, Louisiana? Such a simple answer - YELP and my good friend John L. H. from New Orleans (this guy knows authentic BBQ). Knowing I was going to be in the area there was no doubt I'd take the short detour from my route after exiting the Causeway Bridge and pull in with my appetite in tow. Immediately upon entering and finding a small table near the register we were greeted with a big welcoming smile by our wonderful server - she gave us a couple of menus and took our drink order - as I reviewed all the choices I really wanted a little bit of everything but that would be somewhat ridiculous so I landed on the sliced brisket and smoked chicken and of course I wasn't leaving without a cup of the brisket chili - my better half chose the sliced brisket sandwich and hand cut fries - here's my attempt to describe my experience and believe me it was an experience as any great BBQ should be... Brisket Chili - Wow! This is amazing I should of ordered the bowl - this may sound a little arrogant but it tasted so much like mine - perfect texture - perfect consistency - tender brisket rich complex chili flavor topped with shredded cheddar this definitely could be a meal but that would require at least a quart - this is a must try. Sliced Brisket - awe finally real smoked brisket, so tender, so moist, the smoked flavor radiates through and through I had mine naked because that's the real test but I did sneak a bite of the sandwich - it too was amazing. Smoked Chicken Breast - such a tough one to conquer, its chicken and its nearly impossible to cook to perfection without drying it out, even more so without sauce - well they did it tender, moist and smokey I did dip a few bites to try the sauces table-side it's not required unless your curious - this is great chicken. Sliced Brisket Sandwich - first of all take a look at the bun - you must have fresh quality buns, secondly pile it high with this tender melt in your mouth Brisket drizzles in the hotter less sweet sauce and it's game over - it was an exceptional choice. Hand Cut Fries - fried in fresh clean grease served up hot, I like thin hand cut fries these were perfect they hold the salt well and require no ketchup. Okay it's time for a nap - but with 11 hours in front of me I had to leave without dessert - it was a great experience as I had expected and something I plan to repeat in the future... read more
