Burnt buns on a Sunday Oct 29th @11 AM 2023 I brought back to Oklahoma for people ! ! Oh no no nooo
    Misty W.

Let me start off by saying, this is my favorite place to go. All my best childhood food memories came from here or the original on North Morrison Blvd. Every-time I come home I have to have a sack of my beef or pork, if eating immediately I want it dressed, if traveling to a destination I want it "heavy" sauce! Today I spent $32 on 5 sandwiches - the dressed I ate immediately, which was ok. Kind of dry, but plenty of beef. The others I mentioned I was bringing in my road trip to Oklahoma, so they offered to put in foil, which was a great idea! (When you get them heavy, they may soak some through the bag) . I was bringing 2 for my daughter in OK who also loves them and 1-2 for my son-in-law to try, the rest I was happy to eat after my 9 hr drive! Except..... after the price increase (which I was ok - most things cost more money today, but from $3.50 last I bought a year ago to $5.00 today) I opened up my Sammy's to find this !? I drove 9 hours to deliver a taste of my childhood to open these BURNT buns that nobody took more than a bite of and looked at me like I was crazy to be so in love with this... very disappointed guys. Hope you were just having a bad staff/cook day??

Look, I'm going to warn people ahead of time, this place isn't traditional BBQ. It's actually not really BBQ. It's more of a sandwich shop that invented a particular sandwich. The hi ho sandwich is either a choice of beef or pork that has been sliced deli thin style. It comes with a sauce that is some kind of middle ground between a spaghetti and light BBQ sauce. It's similar to Italian-BBQ crossover sauces I've found in Memphis. Hi ho started before WWII as a sandwich shop that sold their creation to travelers on Hwy 51. The area was settled by Italians and the Spitale family came up with the unique sandwich, likely imitating BBQ without actually being BBQ. Their flat top grill is great too. I often like to get hot ham and cheese sandwiches and their burgers are good and old school. Everything is better with a Barq's!

While in the south I was told I had to have a poboy. Okay, let's do it insaid. Arrived here at Hi-Ho and ordered a roast beef poboy fully dressed. Sandwich, and a root beer in a glass bottle for about $10, okay cool. Not really knowing what to expect when this thing arrived in was kinda shocked at the size. This was just lunch right? Well, I drove in and quickly learned why there were rolls of paper towels on the tables. I'd come back with out a question.

    I love a good dive

There are great burgers at BBQ joints. I know this. In fact, I dont have a clue if the BBQ is good or not because I came for the burger and it didn't disappoint. Cooked fresh to order this 1/3# patty is really well cooked on the flat-top like I like it. Add fries that were piping hot and some iced tea and you are out the door for around $9 That's right. $9......I can't believe people eat at McDonalds. I may try the BBQ one day but for now, this place is my burger stop on the Baton Rouge to Jackson drive. Try it. It's good.

Breakfast Menu that states biscuit and sausage gravy $2, plain biscuit $1, hashbrowns $1. Total should be $2 for hash w/ sausage gravy!

I like the burgers better than the BBQ sandwich, it just seems a little bland to me, but the meat they put on the sandwiches are very good

We've been coming to HI-HO for yesterday. Despite the changes within the Hammond community, HI-HO never changes and that's fantastic!

We tried Boudin Balls that were stuffed (with cheese) and the regular. They were both outstanding but I'd say maybe the ones without cheese were better. It's hard to say because they were both very good. The smoked boudin was better in my opinion only because the casing dries out a bit it makes it crispy so we of course just ate it whole. The regular boudin has a casing that isn't crispy so we chose to just eat the filling. The inside was just as good as the smoked. We only tried the chicken cracklin's and holy cow were they good! Some pieces were real crispy while others were a bit bigger and still had some meat on them. There was a perfect mix up large and small pieces, crispy and not crispy pieces. I wish we had these in Michigan. We brought home some andouille so we could make jambalaya and gumbo. We just cooked some andouille, and it was a little bit spicy and so good. We also brought home some boudin and can't wait to cook that. Be sure to check out their freezer section and take home some different things. This place was such a gem to find! The staff was very friendly and helped us make decisions on exactly what we needed to try since we had never been before. There is seating inside if you're looking to eat there. We just ordered things we could eat on our road trip home as well as things to cook/eat later. I'm only complaint was that the bathroom was not very clean and the toilet didn't flush. That doesn't matter much because you should really be going here for the food! :)

Overall good trip. We stopped in on a Tuesday around Happy Hour because the person I was with…read morewanted a Burger. She specifically wanted a burger from an expert Burger establishment and knows this place well and its reputation for great burgers, which is why I'm a bit disappointed to leave this review tbh Long story short, her burger that was ordered medium rare, first comes out basically well done or medium well at best. She is one of those people who would literally eat a raw burger vs an over cooked one, so she is forced to send the over cooked dry burger back asking for once again medium rare. I mentioned to the waitress to that my friend would prefer an under cooked, rather than over cooked burger. so if anything the cook could err on the side of rare. Well he sure did err on the rare side. The burger comes out the 2nd time...and its raw. No way it was even rare. I eat rare burgers, no way I would eat that. Tell me you can't cook a burger without telling me you can't cook a burger. I mean just because you miss the mark cooking it the first time dont compound the problem by sending the next one out wrong in the opposite direction. Great atmosphere and service. Very surprised about the cook being unable to cook the burger to order as requested. Several trips here that have been great so I'm going to be generous here today and give them four stars.

Awesome foods and excellent service too. A variety of dishes, creole and country too.read more
