Gravel parking lot, super casual, place smells amazing when you walk in. Like a crab or crawfish boil. Tons of items in the freezer to take home. I got the $10 lunch special of 1/2 po'boy and cup of seafood gumbo. Loved that I actually got a gumbo FULL of seafood and it tasted wonderful too. It was perfect for a cold day. The po'boy was actually larger and a 1/2. Shrimp was fried crispy perfectly, bread was fresh. I left full. I did order a side of fries and they came out cold. Our waitress never came back to check on us so we could ask for new fries. They also charge $3 for a styrofoam cup. It's not asked, it's handed to you and charged. B&J Seafood is a family style restaurant and seafood market in Hammond close to I-12. Every time we come it is easily nearly full; people really seem to enjoy it. Ambiance is basically concrete floors, aluminum chairs and square wood like tables, but it's clean, friendly and a good noise level mostly of people laughing. The other half are chowing down on boiled and fried seafood. Drinks are self-serve and the staff is very friendly. Watch out for the parking lot in case it rains; some kind of shale can ruin a nice pair of shoes or a recent car wash. Last time I had the fried alligator poboy and enjoyed it. Chewy New Orleans style poboy bread. Today I had the Trio Fried Platter (Fish, Shrimp and Oyster) which came with a side and side salad. I had the potato salad which was well spiced and reminded me of an Amish potato salad I had up north. Plenty of potatoes and eggs. Side salad was fresh and cold (I love a cold salad, lol). Hush puppies were perfect. Crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside with green onions and a hint of pepper. Fried seafood was fresh and crisp. Oysters were tasty, Shrimp were plentiful and the platter has four nice sized catfish filets that tasted fresh. Overall a four star score. Third time I've been and I will be back. Right beside BJ's is the Berry Town Produce market which features fresh, local produce such as cuccuza, cantaloupes, and vegetables. Various local spices and spice packs, plus what we always get ... the locally baked Italian fig cookies. A visit to B&J's is not complete without visiting Berry Town next door. B&j seafood hits every time you can get fresh seafood from soft shell crabs to crawfish. They also have delicious cooked food from platters to sandwiches and delicious sides. This particular time I went there for the potato salad which is delicious. You cannot go wrong with the potato salad. I don't know what they put in it but it is a hit. Once you walk in you can either sit down for table service or you can walk up to the counter and order your food to go to. There's an opposite counter where you can get the fresh raw seafood from also . The ambiance is no thrills get a ride to the business of eating is clean and that's what matters and the bathrooms are clean. And that's about all the ambience I need. I've been wanting to get over to Hammond to try this place for a while. We had been stir crazy due to the snowstorm. The place was buzzing. There were so many people who I assume we're just like us, but there were a lot of locals there who have died there many times before us. We both got cups of seafood gumbo because it was recommended to us it was very good, but I could tell that the crab meat had disappeared into it because it would probably been cooked a little too long, but it still tasted great. My husband was very happy with his oyster poboy. He really likes places that cook the oysters perfectly so that they pop when you bite into them. The potato salad was good, but had a lot of onion flavor. SO glad we stopped and had lunch here! The special of the day is half of a poboy (which is really 2 halves) and a cup of gumbo. My husband got the oyster poboy and said it was perfect. The bread! I think they're closed on Sunday's these days. Great place for fresh seafood with good prices. Tried some of their boiled crawfish and they were seasoned just right. Bought some cold crabs from their refrigerated case for more than half off the hot ones price. I called to see if they were open and they answered right away with an awesome attitude! 3.50 a on and 2.99 of you get 10ths or more. I drive over, walk in, it smells great and there's a nice line (always a good sign). I get up the front, and the lady tells me I'm in the wrong line, but sends me over to the next side for crawfish. B and J's used to be my favorite seafood place to go. We went there on a Friday evening about 230 the place was still very crowded and order the seafood platter. Seafood was not the best. The oysters had a funny smell to them. The shrimp were hard and kind of cold And the fish well the fish used to be the best fried fish could ever taste and it's that little small catfish that you can get anywhere the macaroni and cheese was great , potato salad was great. This is my favorite place to get a fried shrimp poor boy and I've tried just about everyone in the area and they are the closest to my favorite in Chalmette (Rocky & Carlo's) that I grew up going to. They have a lot of other good things but I can't stop ordering the fried shrimp when I got there. Great staff and lots of take home dishes in their wall of coolers. This was my first visit to B&J's in Hammond. I don't live in Hammond, so I won't be a regular, but I can see why the locals fill this place up! The food is excellent! Our party started with boiled shrimp and onion rings, to share. The boiled shrimp were HUGE! AND flavorful! They were seasoned but not spicy, so they were just delicious. We ordered some that were still warm and some that had been chilled. They had been boiled to perfection and were meaty, firm, easy to peel. And the onion rings...all I can say is the batter was "fancy". Some onion ring batter can taste flat and floury. B & J's onion rings had just the right amount of pepper and other spices. So good. Individually, our party went with more shrimp. A whole shrimp po-boy could feed more than two people! And it was made on New Orleans Leidenheimer French bread. Two of us had fried shrimp, kids size. They let adults do that at B & J's. Same huge shrimp, fried to perfection. One of us had the French fries as a side; the other, potato salad. The potato salad was fresh and creamy, a nice compliment to the crunchy fried shrimp. The hush puppies were yummy too. The last of our party had a half-size roast beef po-boy. Again, big enough for more than person. Remember, it was a HALF size! He requested light gravy and that's what he got. So he enjoyed a nice roast beef po-boy without it being too drippy. But if you want sloppy, you can get it more gravy . As you might suspect, we took home to-go boxes! This is a fantastic place. It's large and roomy. And neat as a pin! As you sit and enjoy a great meal, your eyes look around a goodies everywhere. Fish fry, t-shirts, fresh fish and crabs and crawfish and more! Fun and colorful wall decorations are all over the place. It's like a cross of a casual seafood restaurant and seafood market. I haven't even talked about the mounds of boiled crawfish other customers were enjoying all around us! It seems this restaurant is run by mainly family that moved to Hammond after Katrina heavily damaged their FIVE locations in Chalmette. Their initial location in Hammond was smaller, but now they are in this fantastic spot and they are doing gangbusters, and deservedly so. So, locals, I don't have to tell you how great this place is. If you're passing through Hammond and wanna eat like the locals - and not a tourist - this is the place you want. You'll feel right at home. read more

Last year 2022 crawfish season I stopped getting crawfish from here. They were always small or tasted muddy. Another issue I have with this place is that they sell fresh hot crawfish for a certain price and they sold cold crawfish for a cheaper price. So when I go in and ask for hot crawfish I expect hot crawfish. Well the crawfish I was given was barely even warm. Don't think it's right to charge these different prices when I would've been better off buying cold crawfish for cheaper. My grandma used to get shrimp from here to make seafood gumbo and last year 2022 the shrimp they gave her completely ruined the gumbo. They were also small and slimy. Not shopping here again for any seafood. Not to mention parking at the business is terrible. read more
