I don't know why so many people love Stew Leonard's. Not only is the "petting zoo" a pathetic patch of grass with a few pitied animals, but the store itself is the real zoo. The store is dirty, sticky, not well cleaned, and does not smell good. The singing animals do not enhance the environment, and are quite cheesy and very annoying. The worst part was, they have live footage from their " dairy farm" which is nothing but a crowded factory farm with dozens of cows packed together like sardines. If you enjoy cleanliness, high quality food, and a pleasant experience, I would NOT recommend Stew Leonard's. read more

So I'm the contrarian of the group. I really hate going to Stew Leonards. Now that I have moved from CT, I don't have to be pressured about going there again thank goodness. O.K., so I get it from a child's perspective. My daughter LOVED Stews -she bugged the heck out of me to go every time we were in Norwalk. Animatronics, the tunes, free samples - cool for a kid. But the narrow, crowded, maze of aisles? What's with that? If you actually want groceries for a week, you still need to go somewhere else. Specialty items? I'd rather go one of the small places like Zeytinia or Olive Market which offer a wider variety, are more helpful, and you can go without your B.P. rising. I have given this place every opportunity over the years, from just popping in (dear god what a nightmare it is going there for just a gallon of leche) to Stew's catering for a large family event (the ham was overcooked and tasted of rubber. We threw 80% of it away). I've have really,really tried to like this place, but I can't - maybe because I am over 40? One redeeming feature - their Christmas trees are significantly less than the other lots in FF county. read more

I found Stew Leonard's to be expectedly cult-like, mainly in the sense that I could empathize with fervent viewpoints of both detractors and loyalists. (Granted, I stopped by at 9:45pm Sunday on a holiday weekend.) The dark entrance under the blinding and massive 'largest dairy' sign led me into a bizarre and corny grocery world...I followed the initial mandated route and glanced at all the shelves before making some decisions, $28.44 worth = 3 pints of ice cream Belgian Chocolate $3.29, 'pre ripe' strawberry $2.71 tasty tho expectedly freezer-burned at this point, 'pre-ripe' mint chip 3.00 (are these priced based on their age? too lazy to check). A mozzarella mass allegedly made daily yet no date so maybe the remaining chunks were made on a different day ($6.47)? Mini chocolate chip cookies for $3.99 were reminiscent of TJ's Dunkers cranked to another level - adored these. Apple cider donuts were passable but bear no distinct apple flavor and leave more sugar all over box than on the donuts (and get soggy quickly despite the unadmirable ingredient list). 'Dad's favorite cookies' were terrible, especially for $4.99 and chock-full of additives - you inject so many preservatives yet it's my burden as a customer to consume within 3days? - pretty audacious. Ended up with a bad taste in my mouth, as the two 'old-fashioned' store-brand items I grabbed contained an appalling # of ingredients. I guess the gymnastic critters above me were intended to distract me from the labels, and they were successful. Where to begin with this great place? What do you call this place? Super Market! Grocery Store! Disney goes to the farm! Willy Wonka! Chucky Cheese! Corn Maze! County Fair! Etc. I always have a good time coming into Stew's. They have great milks, cheese, fresh juices, ice creams that taste like a Popsicle. Remember those when you were young. Just imagine it tasting a whole lot better and you got Stew Leonard's Ice Cream. Fresh veggies, huge buffet area, Sushi made on Premises, Italian section, Butcher shop, ETC. Best part if you spend over a 100 you get a free ice cream or Coffee. This place will be packed during peak time so beware. I wish Long Island had a Stew Leonard's. I've wanted to go here since I saw a tv show about what a great store it is to shop in and work at. I decided to wait and go with one of my kids so they could take advantage of the fun. We went for my son's field trip to address their questions about "the supply chain." Oh man what a ball! I didn't get a cart and immediately regretted it! I bought fresh croissants stuffed with spinach and feta, balsamic vinaigrette, Greek yogurt, and a bunch of other stuff...I am salty because I couldn't carry the yummy bolognese that was offered as a sample. And by the time I got a basket it was too far to walk back. The kids had a great time looking at the singing banana, the singing butter, the singing cow, the flipping monkeys, the milk making station and Latoya, our tour guide, was awesome she gave the kids tons of free samples as part of the tour: watermelon, rice cakes, apple cider donut holes. Yum! Then they went on a totally fun kidpropriate hay ride...it cost $1!? What a deal! They got ice cream at the end of the hayride and goodie bags. I was jealous :( Before I Left with all of my purchases, I went back to the preprepared food area got some jalapeño poppers and barbecue wings. Oh yum!!!! Can't wait to go back. Put your roller derby gear on! It's a glorified (crazy) grocery store experience. Almost always packed w families. Sales/deals change weekly. Homemade samples offered of: organic juices, potato chips, rice puff cakes, cider donuts, cheeses, coffee, fruit. One could actually leave full after the "tour"! Butcher will cut your meat to ordered thickness etc. Fresh Maine lobsters. Fresh mozzarella. Broad variety of dairy & international cheeses. On site bakery w everything from bagles to pastries, sheet cakes, & croissants. Prepared foods both hot & cold of every style: Thai, Indian, southern fried chicken, Chinese, Caribbean, salads, dips, soups, chili, mashed potatoes, etc. Ample produce section both exterior & interior- herbs, exotic & standard veggies & fruit. Lots of seasonal things too like pumpkins, cider, apples, Xmas trees, local corn on the Cobb, etc. Huge parking areas all over but it never seems to matter so good luck! read more

Stew Leonard's is by far the BEST grocery store I've ever been to in the US. Yes, that's how good it is. Not Wegmans, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Safeway/Giant, etc. I used to go to Stew Leonard's as a kid, when I was visiting my father and grandmother in CT. It's not just the nostalgia and reminiscing talking; I went a few times in recent years and it's just as good as an adult as it was as a kid. They've got farm animals and a petting zoo outside, and in the summer, they have a stand where you can order hot meals. Stew Leonard's is the "world's largest dairy store", as seen in Ripley's "Believe it or Not", as you'll see on the huge trademark, LCD sign outside of the store, where daily specials scroll by. Step inside and to the left, they have yogurt and ice cream. Nothing like a nice ice cream cone on a hot day, and if I recall correctly, it's cheap too. Walk in to the right, and you can instantly smell the aroma of freshly baked oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies, and various freshly baked breakfast goods (muffins, breads, etc.) Walk a little further and you can watch empty milk and juice cartons being filled and sent down the assembly line. Got kids? They won't be bored here as they're entertained by the acrobatic puppets dangling from the ceiling, and they can even press a button to make the cow on the wall "moooo"! If you even think about organic milk, but are scared of the outrageous prices at other grocery stores, then Stew Leonard's is the place to go. All of the milk (I think, at least it was that way when I went there a year ago) is organic, and it's cheaper than your typical neighborhood grocery store. The rest of the store has plenty of choices: fresh vegetables, meat, poultry, and my favorite, ice cream. I've never tried the hot prepared foods, but they look delicious as well. When you're ready to check out, pick up a coloring book for your kids, if you have any. The best thing about checking out? You can win a free ice cream cone, randomly, OR, if you spend over $100, you'll get one automatically. Walk out the store and you can make a wish in the wishing well, and view photos of celebrities who've visited Stew Leonard's, and customers who have taken pictures in various locales around the world, with their Stew Leonard's bags. Parking here can suck if you get here during a prime shopping time, but if you live close enough, just walk -- it's a lot less stressful. read more

I was exited to go to the first Stews for the first time as I live much closer to the Newington one. When we went in, it was very chaotic, as I've learned to expect from Stews. We wandered through the maze, and were suprised how much the selection and offerings vary from one Stews to another. For example, we wanted to get a Stewpendous (giant cinnamon roll) to share amongst the family and friends staying together for the weekend, but upon asking, they don't do the Stewpendous anywhere besides Newington. Next, we went to the seafood counter, the main reason we were there. We were looking for lobster. It was only around 2pm on a Friday, but they were 100% sold out. They were also sold out of clams. This was a little disheartening as well. Then, we realized we needed a few ingredients to do fresh whipped cream, and it was almost impossible to back track and find those things. I decided to ask someone, and I'm so glad I did. The store is like a giant maze and I would have never noticed the sugar shoved in the corner of the maze. It was convenient, though, to get propane right there, and the ice cream was delicious, per usual. Stews isn't just a store, its an experience. If you decide to shop here, make sure you bring your wallet and tons of patience because there will be groups of children (and adults) who stop in front of the singing cows and vegetables to take pictures. I've been coming to the Nwk store for years. Overall their fresh meat selection and fish department are pretty good. However, the guys behind the fried chicken counter must be hating their jobs, because whenever I come by it feels like I'm bothering them. Just unfriendly and sometimes rude. The silver lining is the lack of customer service deters me from buying anything deep fried so I have to eat healthier! Another time I bought two cartons of organic milk that somehow was carbonated. Oh man, this place is like the Ikea of grocery stores. It's an experience to be had, preferably with young children in tow. For what it's worth, my lady and I took our nephew here and totally won the Cool Aunts award. To start, be sure to hit the parking lot petting zoo, with cows, lambs, chickens, and ducks. Photo-op on the back on the cow sculpture. Feed the animals with $0.25 feed, or listen to the sounds they make and learn about how they fit into the Stew Leonard's farm on the info boards. Then head inside, where you'll find that there's a specific line you have to follow to get through the store--no aisle after aisle here. As you wind your way around, you'll be serenaded by lots of different animatronic bands and nearly hit in the head by animatronic trapeze acrobats. They sing country-twangy odes to milk and dairy, Dole vegetables, and... other stuff. It's alternately terrifying or awesome, depending on personality. You also get to check out several show-and-tells, exhibiting how Stew's makes fresh tortillas, cheese, and other stuff like that. When you're done, don't forget to pick up a soft-serve at their dairy counter! As far as groceries, everything was fresh, and a lot of it made on premises. Definitely a great experience. read more

I'd have to say I like stew Lenard's. Mostly for the fresh high quality steaks and seafood market and croissants. They are a bit pricey and obligate you to purchase more in order to get a deal . As far as the food court: here's some advice. - always go early no later then 330 or 4 that way your food is fresh and hot and not soggy And stay away from the fried chicken or fried foods. Been a Stew's Customer for over 20 years and every time I am there its nothing but first class service and products. They are the Costco and Amazon of the dairy business, customer service is nothing short of amazing. I like the entire store but my favorite attractions are the Bakery , the bagels are extremely good. The Meats and seafood are top notch , some of the best I have ever purchased an enjoyed from a retailer. Dairy department is also another favorite, the diversity and quality of products you normally don't have access to. The Food court is amazing , they literally have something for everyone there and food is tasty and fresh, best of all the entire store especially the food court area is extremely clean and well organized. Parking can be tricky especially on weekends so be prepared to drive around and around during those times. This is their first and smallest store in comparison to Yonkers or Danbury so traffic can be frustrating at times. The Stew Leonard's experience is worth the ride in itself and if you have kids, they will enjoy the animal farm out front. read more

Stew Leonard's is one of the most essential places to visit if you ever happen to be around the fairly underwhelming Southwestern Connecticut area. Even without the gimmicky Disney World style animatronics singing about Boar's Head Meat and the importance of eating vegetables, Stew Leonard's is a fantastic supermarket with a full on assault of quality products and an unbeatable selection of produce at fairly reasonable prices. With the heart of the America supermarket slowly being devoured by the soulless corporate heads of Wal-mart and Super Targets, Stew Leonard's represents a piece of Americana that is hard to come by today. Many of their products are made directly on the spot in the store and they rarely sacrifice quality for price. As for produce, Stew Leonard's really excels in their corn, sea food and diary products. Their corn literally falls straight off the cob, and their seafood is a pleasant surprise. Its also worth noting that all the cookies that they have in their bakery are absolutely excellent and so moist that if you put them in a cookie jar they'd actually soften the other stale Chips Ahoy! you'd have in the immediate vicinity. The customer service is absolutely fantastic here, I remembered one time my father dropped an entire carton of eggs in the parking lot and the manager went out of his way to replace them for him on the spot, you seriously can't buy better publicity. Their employees are often energetic and enthusiastic about their jobs; as someone who's used to seeing drones working in retail this is incredibly refreshing. If you visit, make sure not to go on a full stomach. The place is littered with more free samples than three Costcos combined and you'll likely have an entire meal after completing a single lap of the store. Also don't forget they have a lot of pre-prepared meals available that are all especially delicious, with their ribs and boneless buffalo tenders being among my favorites. During the summer they also have soft serve Ice Cream which is among the freshest and cleanest soft serve I've ever had, there's a lot of substance to it. My only real complaint about Stew Leonard's is that the place is designed like a maze; when you walk in your forced to go along a path in order to get straight to the cash register. While this is fine for window shopping, if you intend on buying just one product or finding something specific it would probably take you around 20 minutes to actually get to it and buy it. However they do give you a free Ice Cream cone if you present a receipt to their Ice Cream area that totals out to over a hundred dollars, which is pretty awesome considering how quickly your cart will fill up when you go here. Stew's is great for people with kids, so expect to be weaving in and out of the way of children your whole way there if you find yourself there at a high traffic hour. Luckily, Stew's has started putting out flyers with graphs of when they're the busiest, so you can avoid the crowds of people. Although Stew's is a grocery store, I would say it's a specialty store. A lot of things on your grocery list are still only going to be found at Stop and Shop. Going on a weekend if absolutely maddening, I have no idea how so many people can put up with it. Think the mall on Christmas eve... every. single. weekend. I opt to go weekday mornings so I don't have to deal with people leaving their carts in the middle of the aisles and wandering off. Stew's is great for certain things, their produce and meat are excellent and the hot apple cider in their little cafe (off to the left when you're leaving the bakery) is wonderful... oh and the New York cheesecake... mmmm. However, Stew's is a headache. You cannot just pop in for something. The store is designed in a maze so unless you're familiar with the store and can cut through the little openings you see every so often, you're stuck going through everything. 5 stars - Stew's is as good as it gets. There's tons of reviews applauding the selection, the quality, the service....so I figured I would share some of my favorites. Meat - this is the only place where I will by my beef. Great sale prices and the butchers are fantastic. Seafood - great quality and they always have a fresh selection. The chicken salad is amazing and so is the fresh mozzarella...both can be found in the same area. Oh, and the foccacia bread is a must have for an antipast spread. The rice cakes with peanut butter dipped in fudge... awesome. My wife also says they have the best tomatoes on town. The prepared food is also fantastic. Finally, and I know this is a bit silly, but one of my favorite things about Stew's is you get a free ice cream when you spend $100. Horrible experience. Let's be honest, here is the rundown of the things you may wanna pay attention to, when shopping here @ Stew Leonards. (1) Price. Is it really practical? I was appalled to see price tags associated to their produce. When I approached the manager, he told me that some of their produce are imported from out of the country, hence the price. (2) Quality. If you are buying for some items that are in closed container, make sure that you open it up, or ask for assistance. I bought this berry for 4-5$ or so, only to be surprised after opening that it contains web of mold-like organism. Dismaying. (3) Some of their eggplants are big and shiny, looking fresh. But wait until you go home, you will be surprised that some of them may contain rotten-brown looking spots. (4) They say, customer is always right. But trying calling their customer rep or a manager, and hear for yourself what kind of service they will be provide you over the phone. I refuse to pay more just because they are listed in Ripley's Believe it or Not. read more

What can I say, I love Stew Leonards. I have relatives that live up in Connecticut, so I've been going to Stews for years. I was very excited to see that they also finally came to Long Island after a few years of nonsensical red tape. The store is laid out a bit different than a traditional supermarket and with the dancing cows and singing animals it makes supermarket shopping a wee bit more fun. The wee ones seem to dig it too. Truth be told, I am just slightly biased from many, many, many trips here throughout my childhood. It was always a special treat when Mom decided to take us grocery shopping at Stew's instead of Stop & Shop. This is not just a grocery store (ahem, correction: "The World's Largest Dairy Store!") but rather a most fun and engaging shopping experience. There is entertainment at every corner (more so for the little ones, but adults can appreciate the quirky song-and-dance puppets too!), delicious specialty products, and samples galore! Last week, while visiting my parents, I brought my toddler daughter here (more to entertain her than to really do any substantial grocery shopping). She was enchanted within seconds! (And she certainly was pleased as punch with all the samples, especially from the bakery). I mean, what toddler wouldn't love a shopping trip where you can see mechanical monkeys swing through the air, musical juice boxes sing songs on stage, the Chiquita banana do a little song and dance, and say hello to Daisy the cow. Kids also get a kick out of seeing the behind-the-scenes views into different departments, including the bakery and dairy departments. There is so much to love about Stew's at any time of year. For years we bought our Christmas trees at Stew's, and this remains one of my family's top places to stock up for summer barbecue essentials. Oh, and the ice cream station is year round. DELICIOUS. Prices at Stew's aren't any better than regular grocery stores, but there are excellent Stew's specialties to try. The bakery is really great - lots of tasty treats, cookies, and cakes; I always crave their chocolate chip cookies when I'm home! Ice cream, fresh lemonade and iced tea (and my brother's favorite, their green tea iced tea), the meat department - all outstanding. This. is. THE. GREATEST. grocery store. in. the. WORLD. I believe it's also the largest dairy farm. I am not exaggerating. First, you are greeted by the enormity of it as you find a parking spot. Then you see the farm animals outside! You can pet them and feed them! Real animals! Walking in, there is a creamery where you can get mmm, Stew Leonard's ice cream! My mom used to always get us an ice cream on the way in so we would be quiet as we shopped. But, really, there is no need for ice cream on the way in. Get it on the way out. Because as you purchase your grocery items at Stew Leonard's you will be delighted something for all of the senses. The freshly baked breads greet you first. There are treats of every kind. You can even try them. The store offers juices made by the company itself and you can taste them before you buy. Want to see how they make the milk? Just look through the glass windows to watch the whole process! They even make to-go foods like soup or chicken wings and whatnot. Once you get bored of tasting all of their wares or watching how everything is made just look up and delight in the animated figures singing their Stew Leonard's songs. When I was little I really loved them. Going back, they're a little freaky but I'm glad that they're the originals from my childhood and haven't been updated to be Barney or the Wiggles. Stew Leonard's is really an experience. It's quality food made right there from a company you can trust. They really do have every grocery item that you could want, and more. Zero star if I can was my first time shopping food there I buy macaroons and croissant and some other stuff the macaroons was really hard and not tasty at all and the Croissant was hard and my son got sick he's stomach was bothering him allot was a store different from other supermarkets but the food is not fresh and good the way people think I won't go there again! I could give this place 5 stars if it weren't for PEOPLE and the feeling of being a rat in a maze hunting down that elusive piece of cheese!! I don't have much tolerance for people in general and if you don't either, this place will be a true test of your ability not to commit murder!! I'm one of those rare people that doesn't like to stand in the way of others conducting their business. I don't stop in the middle of an aisle to stare at products I'm considering on the shelves. When I'm with the wife, I try to stand to the side out of the way of anyone passing by. Yet here in this maze, no matter where I stood, someone wanted to go there!!! They have a pretty nice selection of groceries and many other things. A great meat dept where everything looked good. They offer free samples of cheeses and things which happens to be where I was annoyed again!! You take a toothpick and use it to pick up your sample of cheese. One guy was picking up cheese with the toothpick, eating the cheese off the toothpick, then sticking it back in more cheese and doing it again!! Who raised these people???? Stew's is great -- it's a CT institution. If you've never been to a Stew Leonard's before, imagine it as the top floor of IKEA, but with dairy, produce, and groceries. If you've never been to Ikea, well... Stew's is known for they're fresh fruit, amazing dairy, and good selection of prepared foods. You walk in and there's a place to get soft serve ice cream to your left, and coffee to the right. As you walk though the rest of the store, you get a chance to sample foods and enjoy fun little animatronics. You can never go wrong with anything from the bakery department or any of the meats. The butcher has some of the best meat you can buy in the area. My only gripe with this location is the size, it feels quite cramped. It's billed as the largest dairy store, but in all honesty the aisles feel quite narrow and it's difficult to navigate on a busy Sunday afternoon. I'd suggest going during the week. read more

Put it this way, tourists come here just to take pictures and pick up a few items. How many grocery stores are tourist destinations? Food is that good and that fresh but if you're on a diet, this place can be deadly. Maze design so ingenious from a profitability perspective but takes time as Fairfield County's finest are all over the place with their kids and shopping carts as it is a great place for kids to see. Pick your times wisely if you do not stand crowds as it can be brutal for both parking and shopping during certain hours and def during the holidays. Love stews there for lunch often work around the corner in Paramus love there prepared foods but have gotten so expensive and the cold pasta salad with mozzarella and tomatoes my favorite but they have really skimped on the mozzarella balls your paying 8 for a container and you hardly get any cheese balls so paying 8'for cold pasta just not worth it I'll be making it myself from now on read more

When I lived in CT, I was a nanny....so naturally I had to press the button for the Chiquita banana to make her dance. Except, I didn't have the kids with me when I did so. I about had a heart attack when I had to choose from ALL THE CHEESE!!! Five Stars for Cheese Selection Alone!!!!! They have take-out food too! Got some Buffalo wings which were pretty decent. Stopped by here before Thanksgiving and it was a mad house. Good selection of hard to find items for cooking, however, a few things irk me: - You are corralled on a one-way track through certain sections so if you want to pick up one item, you are forced to push and shove your way to your destination. - Coffee options are lacking. Spent a while looking for whole been single origin coffee. Only found a Hawaiian coffee which cost nearly 22$ for less than a pound, and it was not Kona! - Definitely caters towards the more high end crowd. Containers of prechopped celery and shrink wrapped zucchinis - seriously? - Lots of items look fancy and may be 'natural' labeled, but look at the ingredients and you may find it loaded with preservatives. I would definitely rank Trader Joes higher on the list than Stew Leonard's for more natural and less processed items but Stew Leonard's is definitely the one stop shop if you need to go food shopping, want good quality, and have time to battle crowds and read ingredients. Of course, its not cheap either, so be sure to bring a credit card. read more

The best all-in-one grocery store. Period. Nothing else compares to this place. And making you walk through the entire store and past everything in a maze-like fashion so you have to buy everything? Genius! Fortunately everything is so good I don't mind buying it all. I've watched this place grow and expand and offer more for many many years now, and they are a powerful force. This supermarket will destroy your impression of the average supermarket. It certainly made me re/evaluate mine. It makes every other grocery store seem over priced, the food tasteless and stale, and a drag to go to. My boyfriend and I live in NYC, and every now and then we drive upstate to the one in Yonkers, NY. With traffic its about an hours drive each way, and well worth the trip! We stock up on lobster rolls (3 for $15!!!!!), four berry pie (trust me you do not have to be a "pie person" to want finish off a whole one on your own), fried chicken, and a million other mouth watering pre-prepared foods that make going out into the city for an over priced meal seem like an unrewarding chore. There is always something new to try, and usually guaranteed to be delicious. The possibility of discovering a new favorite dish adds to the excitement of the experience. I am such a fan! read more
