This review is an emotional outpouring. Stew Leonard's (SL) has been a part of my life for 55 years. I first came to this store soon after it opened, when it was much smaller and the only SL store. I now live a few hours away from any of the stores, but 2 SL shopping bags are among those my family uses regularly. I still go here and to other SLs when it's opportune, and the close relationship between SL and my family culminated when, upon his passing, SL SR. was placed a few strides away from my parents at Willowbrook Cemetery (rated 5). Over the years our family developed a close personal connection with the store. My mother became good friends with the head chef there (the prepared foods are excellent--I still always get the ambrosia salad when I'm there!). Sorry I don't recall his name. He was there from at least the mid 90s to the early 2000s. As my mother grew older we started having increasing numbers of SL items as side dishes at our holiday meals. In 2001 when she died we had SL provide the whole Thanksgiving dinner. I recall going in and speaking to the head chef, informing him of my mother's passing. He said he had wondered what had happened to her and missed her. The connection between our family and the store grew with my wife and kids. When we got engaged I got my wife's parents a SL gift basket, complete with Elsa the cheese cow. We would all visit this store and some of the others while traveling, enjoying the ice cream on site and bringing non-perishables back home, as well as apple cider in season--we'd bring the coolers for that. I don't know if my mother ever met either the Senior or Junior proprietor. I won't say I 'met' either of them, but I did encounter them both together once. There were no intros, and it was brief and terse. It was early summer 1979 or '80; like many college students, I thought SL would be a good summer 'gig'. I went to apply and found no parking spaces, but saw another parking lot across the street. I parked there and two men, one old one young, both dressed business formal, went walking past. The older one asked why I was parking there. I noticed the SL employee-only sign only then; I said I was going to apply for a job. He insisted there were none available. Stew Leonard's in Norwalk has always been one of our first stops when I would visit my family. I don't get to Stew Leonard's any other time. I love this location and my daughter was fortunate enough to visit our family for the holidays. I'm so jealous. My cousin saw her staring at the metal mug and purchased it for. That's family for you. This Stew Leonard's is super cute, it's pretty big and has it all. I love the variety and the freshness of things. The staff is friendly and this place always look nice and clean which makes it a joy to shop. They have a cute little mini "farm" outside for the little ones, with goats and ducks, it's a nice addition if you have kiddos with you. They have groceries, they have ready to eat hot food, baked goods, desserts and even party balloons and gifts. I love coming to Stew Leonard's and my mother used to bring me all the time when I was a kid. My daughter has never been to Stew Leonard's so we decided to stop by to get some Ice Cream. I could always remember that Stew Leonard's always had some great Ice Cream. We walked the store and we both ordered Red Velvet Ice Cream. The Ice Cream was so delicious. This grocery store is like a cross between Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and a normal grocery store. I have loved every single item purchased from here. And the staff go above and beyond. One time I asked if they moved the peanut butter to another spot and instead of telling me where it was they walked me to the spot and asked which one I wanted. Amazing. Stew Leonard's always had been a staple of supermarket shopping in our area (Stamford/Norwalk in Connecticut), even before Trader Joe's became a thing and much before the Whole Foods, Fairway, and all other high end supermarkets. It is still perfectly delivers today, but you really need to look for special deals. For many sale items, Stew Leonard's offers great quality/price ratio, otherwise it is just expensive. Always a pleasure visiting Stew Leonard's! Between the petting zoo outside and the dancing/singing animatronics inside, as well as the delicious samples, Stew's is an easy favorite. Everything is fresh, well-organized, and high quality. The produce is immaculately stacked, the veggies look awesome, and everywhere you look there are more and more options to choose from. The staff are incredibly nice, as well, and are always around to help. I stopped by this weekend and saw that this location had undergone a few renovations to the front, making the entrance and produce area a lot bigger. It looked great! This place is an institution- so much more than a grocery store. The amount of house made products are insane. Love the free samples here, from the delicious ice cold apple cider to the hot chicken. Staff here are pretty friendly and helpful. Insane selection of prepared foods from all different cultures. A real surprise, soft serve cream! I would have not really thought to try soft serve ice cream from a market, but my daughter who lives near by said it was a must try. They have a great variety of flavors as well as Dole whip! They also had a childhood classic that most places don't have which is cherry hard shell dip as well as chocolate, most places only have chocolate, so the cherry was a great surprise, so I ordered a cone with vanilla and cherry dip. The ice cream consistency was very smooth and has very little or no air because it was very dense and creamy super high quality. I admire this creative, energetic grocery store with unique offerings. I wish SL would expand into Oregon, if only for the deli section. From barbecued meats to roasted chicken to stuffed bread to outstanding side dishes, SL has serious offerings for special dinners. I can imagine this would be a lot to take in with children, but for my adult daughter and me, it's a blast. My favorite section is an island cooler with veggie sides--butternut squash, broccolini, mashed potatoes, mushrooms and so on. Pair any of that with a roasted chicken and boom! Dinner! Stew Leonard's is amazing! It's huge! The produce, dairy, and bakery products are extremely fresh and delicious! There's a cute farm outside with baby animals. It's an experience visiting here! There's puppets and vegetables singing! You can watch workers make mozzarella cheese and guacamole. There are samples. You can watch the milk being processed. They have really good ice cream. Did she think Eugenia was going to eat it; isn't it a health violation to allow unhygienic customers into restricted areas of the store? A little slice of my childhood. Coming back here is a flood of nostalgia and emotions. Did I walk around the store looking for the cow? Yes. Did I press the button to listen to it moo? Yes. I must have done that a hundred times in the 1980s. Great grocery store! I stocked up on so many Italian ingredients. Alla vodka sauce from their in-house brand, a large variety of pasta brands that you will find in just a few stores like Eataly, and lots of EVOO. Love their local cherry tomatoes! read more

The customer service is spotty, every 3-in-5 of the associates I have interacted with are extremely rude. The rude associates' impressions overshadow the efforts of the extremely nice folks that are part of that team. The IKEA layout is a great fit for IKEA, not for grocery shopping. I forgot an orange and it took an absurd 5 minutes just to get to and from the oranges because of the maze and human obstacles. I won't even go into the slightly racist animatronic installations throughout the store. I eagerly look forward to Wegman's opening in July. read more

I'm familiar with Stew Leonard's. Even before we moved to Yonkers we regularly shopped there. They have wonderfully fresh produce, freshly prepared baked and dairy products, mostly made in house, which keeps quality top notch and prices lower than would be expected. They also employ all types of people, from young to old, with and without disabilities, which should definitely be commended. My family and I came shopping here since we were in the area. The layout is different from what we're used to but it's similar also. The entrance and exit are at the same opening but it's almost like a maze where you enter one side, shop in the maze and exit from the other. Just as with our familiar Yonkers location, everything was super fresh. They have the singing displays throughout the store just like what I'm used to and they also have the stuffed animals in the rafters doing flips on mechanical devices; something the kids get a kick out of. I even found macarons that I haven't seen at the Yonkers store in forever. I spent a tiny fortune buying fresh tuna steaks for searing, seltzers, sweets, produce and goodies for my tot. Our problem is with their customer service and the fact that we had issues with three different employees regarding the same concern. As I mentioned before, we bought a bunch of seltzers and we also paid separately at the self checkout. I know for a fact that their self checkout is fairly new and that it is also problematic; it doesn't ring up products properly. I was not paying attention to how my seltzers were ringing up but I heard my sister inform the employee manning self checkout, that her seltzers were ringing up incorrectly. When I heard that, I checked my machine and noticed that I was also being incorrectly charged. For whatever reason, the employee began arguing with my sister over the price and said that she was wrong. When my sister told her about the signage, the lady kept insisting my sister was wrong and then legit said, "If you say so", and walked away. Mind you, the money overpaid is by no means a large sum but the way that woman spoke to her was completely uncalled for. My sister had less items that I did so she finished paying before me. I told her to just go to customer service to have them refund her and she went straight there. I didn't bother telling the woman about the incorrect pricing on my bill because I knew she was going to be nasty about it. I just figured I'd go to customer service also and have them fix it. We get to customer service and apparently my sister had to go into the store and take a photo of the signage, herself, because the women at customer service did not believe her either. She returned, visibly upset, showed them the picture and they returned her money. I walked up as she was doing so and told them that I also overpaid. They mistakingly charged me the overage again and had to return double the amount. My sister was still fuming. There was also a security person at customer service that for some reason, followed my sister as if she was going to go crazy. It was really weird because the only reason why anyone was upset was because of how the employees treated us. I remember the website and event Stew himself say, "The customer is always right", and while I don't believe this statement to be true for all circumstances, in this particular case, we were right and instead of the emlls giving us the benefit of the doubt and just checking to make sure that what we were saying was true (over some change, no less), they treated us like we were trying to scam them out of 25 cents despite spending over 100 dollars. It was odd. I've never had that issue in Yonkers and maybe location is key. In the future, I'll likely make sure to take pictures of all the signage of I ever shop at this location again because I am not going to go search for signage to dispute a price when the staff should damn well know what they're selling and for how much. This was pure BS. It's funny, because Stew was actually there that day and he came around to greet a bunch of people. Next time, maybe I'll ask him to intervene. read more

Wow! First time at Stew Leonard's and all I kept thinking was I never want to leave. The way the store is set up is so inviting, full of different spectacles to look at as you shop. They pretty much have everything here. Looking for a specific kind of bread? Cheese? Baked goods? Look no further! The shelves were fully stocked and everything looked so fresh. I was surprised to see exotic fruits like Longans. We picked up a cheesecake, fresh swordfish, shrimp, snacks and more. Had the seafood and cake for dinner and dessert - all great quality and delicious. We also had the most friendly and welcoming cashier who saw my excitement of being a first time customer. I couldn't wait to try the yogurt at the end of our shopping adventure so he gave me a token for a free scoop. I tried the coconut/pistachio swirl. It was tasty and not overly sweet. I wish this store was in every city. I'm looking forward to going back during my next visit! read more

I have been shopping at Stew's for years. The Norwalk store is the oldest of the 4. For the longest time the store showed its age. Well over the past few week they have been remodeling. My experience today was really good. The shelves were nicely stocked, the layout has improved ten fold. As usual samples were plenty. Everything about the store was upbeat. The fish specifically the salmon looked amazing, the crab clusters looked meaty, and speaking of meat....my favorite topic ....that have this cut called "petit filet" part of the whole filet mignon. After shopping at the market we stopped at the liquor store. While walking around we met with Stew Leonard Jr. Had a nice conversation with him. He is as genuine in person as he appears in the commercials. Overall a wonderful experience. read more

First time here today. To be blunt, I hated the store. It felt like my worst nightmare come true, being stuck in Its a Small World at Disneyland. The meandering layout, low ceilings, the singing dolls was all a bit too much. I didn't understand the biggest dairy section either. Didn't look anymore impressive than your average big box store dairy department. We did pick up a few items and the quality was great. read more

Renovation resulted no improvement. Cashier set up is terrible. they moved the ice cream stand indoors, which takes the fun out of it being an outdoor facility. The bread and the bakery are subpar. Yeah growing up, my family always reused this plastic tub that we got from Stew's for food storage, and I always wondered where it was from. Stew's is a local favorite in Norwalk, CT. We don't have any of these in the bay. The place is set up kinda like Ikea or Food Maxx, where it's "on rails" or "scripted", idk the word for it. Basically, when you enter, there's a set route for you to navigate through the store from entrance to exit, with shortcuts here and there if you want to cut through the store. There are animatronics set up throughout the store, which reminds me of Chuck E. Cheese. Cool for kids. This is one of those places where the store brand is actually the best, because they make their things in-house. Stew Leonard's milk is farm fresh and top tier, among others. The deli/hot food is really good, as well as their pre-packaged heat & eat food. One thing to note is that the prices here are a bit higher than your average grocery store, but if you're getting the good stuff, it's worth it. The service here is excellent. Some of the friendliest staff I've ever seen at a grocery store. Looking back, this is an epic place to shop and a fun place to walk around. For kids it's cool! read more

I went in looking to get a custom cut prime rib, I was met by the third degree by two of your butchers! " why do you want so much? Why are you getting it so early? I also have always enjoyed the Stew Leonard's shopping experience. However, three weeks ago I purchased a large chicken salad from the salad bar. When I got it home and tasted it, I could tell the chicken was turned. Whether it was expired chicken made into the salad, or the salad was old. I figured it was a one off and went ahead and had Thanksgiving catered for four. The stuffing was good. The mashed potatoes were rancid and inedible. The turkey we're still chewing on. It was tough, unseasoned and my dog wouldn't even eat it. The good news is I was only having my immediate family to poison. Stew Leonards can definitely do better. read more

Ugh where to start.. I lived in norwalk over 20 years ago. The BBC service and the offerings were so much better. I waited 30 minutes just to pay for propane inside and then had to wait for them to find someone authorized to fill them. The highlight of any Stew's trip is definitely the ice cream & frozen yogurt you can get. They have the typical flavors but rotate it seasonally to bring in new flavors, such as pumpkin. The pistachio is my favorite and a must-try! I love how creamy the ice creams are and how affordable the prices have stayed over the years! As for groceries they have so many different options and things to choose from. It can get hectic, but once in line, they move pretty quick. I also love how you can watch foods (bagels, chips, fruit) being freshly prepared and handled!
