My first few times shopping there were good, and thought I would continue shopping there. But the very recent experience on last Friday (Jan 28)- a catering order together with a specific cake from the bakery dept- made me decide never to go back there. They didn't give us the cake (a torte) I ordered when the driver delivered the catering to us; we called the store and the store manager was very nice and apologetic and arranged to deliver the cake to us and we appreciated it. However, when the cake was delivered, it was the wrong cake. The wrong cake was not fresh at all- it's packed over a week ago (on Jan 22) and was packed even a coupld of days BEFORE the date I placed the catering order (Jan 24). Also, there were an 8-dollar differenct between the wrong cake ($24.99) and the cake I paid ($32.99). The store manager was once again very appologetic and told me when we called back that he will have the one who is in charge of the bakery dept to call me to offer apology and issue a refund to us. We did receive the phone call the next day- but the one who called me was talking with the attitude as if they didn't make anything wrong, even saying she was not aware that they have that kind of cake flavor (meaning the wrong cake I received)- I sent her the pictures under her request as a proof. (After I took the picture of the cake, I threw the unfresh cake into garbage!!) And she has never got back to me, not by email, nor by phone and no refund issued. As it's more of an ETHICAL principle than a money issue to me, I decided to call them again today. When they finally transferred my call to her, this same person on the phone was very rude in attitude, and did not even want to admit their mistake. And I have also not received a refund issued yet. This store just lost a potential customer who shops often and paid $$$ on groceries, all because of this lousy service in bakering deparment.

    Variety of hams!

I am in love--and hope it continues! I am not at all a fan of grocery stores, and as they are all chains now--there is little hope in change. I did find some hope and inspiration in Balducci's. Small but clean store, which even in /Jan offered local produce and other local CT products. For me this is a plus and no brainer. Why do not grocery stores regularly do this--offer in season fruits, veggies, etc from local farms? Or just any products from local vendors? Wonderful assortment of Italian products, and also not just Italian hams. They have a wonderful Jambon de Paris (Madrange)--which is the only ham to use in eggs Benedict and Croque Monsieur's for not only authenticity, but pure delsiousness, . Also in house home made roast beef which pales in comparison to any other (Boar's Head ain't made in house and ain't the only choice). Lots of duck products--which are so difficult to find in chain grocery stores. Lovely fresh breads and other baked goodies. A breath of fresh air!

I've lived in the area five years and never stopped here until last night. I needed a quick meal and made a quick stop. For prepped meals, they have a great selection. You can order food individually or make it a meal with two sides for just a few dollars more. I opted for the meal and selected meatballs, chicken pasta salad and risotto. I inquired about the pesto pasta salad, and the server told me he wasn't one hundred percent positive it didn't have nuts. For someone with a tree nut allergy, not being a hundred percent isn't good enough. I was disappointed that in 2018 a store doesn't list out ingredients to ensure safety for all customers. I realize that with a food buffet, there can be cross contamination, but I would expect all staff to not know, but be able to access meal ingredients. Also, they had a good looking chicken parm as a dinner option, but it had almost no sauce at all. I asked if there was any extra sauce they could add, but there wasn't. With many dishes using what seemed to be the same sauce, it seemed like an easy request. Overall, my meal was good. Maybe a little bit on the pricier side, but good. I especially liked the meatballs and the sauce with it. If they could list out ingredients for prepped meals, I'd be back again.

    USE BEFORE MARCH 15/2019!

Not sure how long this place has been around but it appears to be a hidden gem with very few Yelp reviews. I am happy to give them a 5 star review with the quality of the service and especially the food! It's a typical meat store with some of their own packaged sausages and ground meats but they make a mean sandwich. They have about 5-6 sandwiches to choose from. It's also more of a grab and go place, they have a few picnic tables in front to eat at for warmer weather. My wife and I split 2 subs. We had the roast beef and the turkey. Both were very enjoyable but the turkey stood out a little more for me. It was pomegranate glazed turkey breast with baby arugula molasses and a spicy feta dip that packed a punch full of flavor to complete the sub. The roast beef had a horseradish tzatziki and olive oil with their pasture raised beef, everything was really fresh. I could not leave out the seeded bun in this review, soooo good, couldn't be any more seeds on this wedge in a good way, the bread is outstanding. Both of these subs were only $12.99, amazing price compared to other sandwich shops, the pictures don't do the sandwich justice, was incredible, will be back!!

This review is an emotional outpouring…read more Stew Leonard's (SL) has been a part of my life for 55 years. I first came to this store soon after it opened, when it was much smaller and the only SL store. I now live a few hours away from any of the stores, but 2 SL shopping bags are among those my family uses regularly. I still go here and to other SLs when it's opportune, and the close relationship between SL and my family culminated when, upon his passing, SL SR. was placed a few strides away from my parents at Willowbrook Cemetery (rated 5). Over the years our family developed a close personal connection with the store. My mother became good friends with the head chef there (the prepared foods are excellent--I still always get the ambrosia salad when I'm there!). Sorry I don't recall his name. He was there from at least the mid 90s to the early 2000s. As my mother grew older we started having increasing numbers of SL items as side dishes at our holiday meals. In 2001 when she died we had SL provide the whole Thanksgiving dinner. I recall going in and speaking to the head chef, informing him of my mother's passing. He said he had wondered what had happened to her and missed her. The connection between our family and the store grew with my wife and kids. When we got engaged I got my wife's parents a SL gift basket, complete with Elsa the cheese cow. We would all visit this store and some of the others while traveling, enjoying the ice cream on site and bringing non-perishables back home, as well as apple cider in season--we'd bring the coolers for that. I don't know if my mother ever met either the Senior or Junior proprietor. I won't say I 'met' either of them, but I did encounter them both together once. There were no intros, and it was brief and terse. It was early summer 1979 or '80; like many college students, I thought SL would be a good summer 'gig'. I went to apply and found no parking spaces, but saw another parking lot across the street. I parked there and two men, one old one young, both dressed business formal, went walking past. The older one asked why I was parking there. I noticed the SL employee-only sign only then; I said I was going to apply for a job. He insisted there were none available. I started to say I would like to just leave an application, but he cut me off, saying again "there are no jobs!" [Please continue reading in the review space for the Stew Leonard's store in Danbury. After taking the order, the staff said they couldn't make the juice. Fine; we agreed to one smoothie split into two cups. Instead, they overfilled two cups. At the register, the owner tried to charge me for two smoothies (nearly $12 each). I explained we only ordered one smoothie to be divided. He looked at the cups and said they were full, so I had to pay for two. That's not how ordering works. If he had half a clue, he would've investigated further instead of immediately trying to squeeze the customer. He didn't. He then took one smoothie away from my daughter, said he'd divide the other, went into the back, came out with an empty cup, handed it to me, and told me to divide it myself. After the bait-and-switch and then adding insult to injury, I finally broke down and called him an M.F.; though frankly, that's too generous he is really just a low-life POS. He responded by calling me a cheapskate and telling me to get out (in front of my kids). For the record, both daughters also bought other items in this already overpriced store. This wasn't about money. It was about refusing to be taken advantage of. Maybe this kind of conduct flies somewhere wherever he is from, but it's not how business is done in the U.S. or in Westport. And last I checked, the basic rule still applies: the customer is always right, especially when the facts are this clear. Plenty of better options nearby (GG & Joes has better smoothies!). We won't be back.
