I've lived in Berkeley for the last two years, and walk by this place all the time. I decided to…read moregive it a try since it's hard to find good BBQ here, and this place makes some bold claims about their ribs and other meats. I could not have been more disappointed. First off I ordered ribs and got brisket instead, and the brisket is not well cooked or seasoned. It tasted like a hungry man microwavable dinner. Absolutely no pink, just grey sad beef. But the sides are what really killed it. The baked beans was literally just a third of a can of Buschs beans, no additional seasoning or anything. The least they could do is throw some pepper and pork fat in there. The potato salad was somehow worse. Also completely unseasoned, just over mashed over cooked potatoes and a little mayo as far as I can tell. Put some pickle juice or relish or horseradish in there, at least salt and pepper. The BBQ sauce is very obviously store bought and cheap, it's sickeningly sweet. Also the person working the register was actively mean mugging me and didn't speak to me at all other than to ask for the money. And for 25 bucks, I wasn't expecting to have my mind blown, but my experience was altogether so poor, the portions too small, and everything was disappointing. For 25 dollars worth of groceries you could make five bigger servings of actually edible versions of the same thing. Or go down the street to Heads and Tails BBQ. It's still not authentic southern BBQ, but for the same price you can get significantly better food at a place you can actually sit down and eat at. If you actually enjoy and respect barbeque, do yourself a big favor and avoid this place like the plague.

No complaints though--it made for a relaxed meal and the service was attentive. I ordered the fried chicken and beignets with gravy, and it was excellent. I'm usually someone who prefers bone-in fried chicken, but this version won me over. The chicken was juicy with perfectly seasoned, crispy breading, and the savory gravy paired surprisingly well with the beignets. Everything on the plate complemented each other without feeling too heavy. The only miss for me was the orange juice--it was pretty forgettable. But honestly, the rest of the meal more than made up for it. I'd happily come back for the fried chicken.

We sat inside originally, but then decided to go sit outside because it was a beautiful day. The inside was clean and very quiet, the patio was full of people. Ambiance gets a 4/5. We were immediately met by a pleasant waitress, and when we moved she just came and found us. She was very informative, engaging, and knowledgeable, great service all around 4.8/5. I ordered the strength & my cousin the garlic wings and a margarita. The wings were some of the best I've ever had, fried to perfection and seasoned just right. A huge punch of garlic, which I really enjoy, so wings were 4.9/5. The vegetarian sandwich I ordered was so delicious, the pesto and garlic aioli really added flavor and the fresh warm bread really set it apart 4.8/9, only because the jalapeño was more spicy than pickled. Overall; I rate this place a 4.7/5

Most importantly I think it's inaccurate that yelp says they have a lot of vegetarian options. Nope. If you want to accompany your friends as they eat BBQ, eat at home first.
