I return to Steve's again and again. To me, the only thing to order is one of the barbecue plates. I especially love to order "extra meats" for a couple of extra dollars. It seems expensive until I realized that this is enough delicious, tender meat for two or three meals. It also has good kim-chee and a tasty bean salad. read more

I've been coming here since I was an undergrad in the late 1990's. The cooks are Mexican now, but the food is still good and I think it's still a bargain for the amount of food you get. I usually order the bbq chicken or the short ribs. I also recently tried the bi bim bop with bbq chicken, and really liked it, as you still get the same awesome bbq chicken, but with lots of veggies and an egg. I just wish it was easier to find parking around here, as I would drop by more often for take-out. But for now, if I'm in the area, I always make it a point to stop in for some take-out for the family. Each portion size is easily 2 meals, as not only is the amount of meat you get generous, but so are the portions of white rice, bean sprouts, and kimchi. Sometimes this place is the only reason I head into Berkeley. The portions are generous and the price is affordable. The only reason for 4 stars is because of the atmosphere and the long lines. Steve's has large portions and great food! They offer very quick service with great quality food. This is the kind of food that you will crave from time to time and you can get it in no time. BBQ Beef is my all time favorite and recommend anyone to try it but you can't go wrong with anything in their menu for only about $8! read more

Great for hungry students. Portions are big (lasts 3 meals). I usually get their chicken bibimbap, which is pretty good. The rice, meat and hot sauce from steve's is really yummy, however, the vegetables are bland, and the kimchi tastes a bit off. I like my kimchi tasting a bit different. Their's tastes a bit too fishy for my liking. There isn't that much to dislike about steve's. especially if you are hungry and need food. The people who work there are nice. It is great for indecisive people as well, considering their menu only has about 9 dishes to choose from. read more

They are serving GREASY AND NOT-SPICY version of Korean food. Good mix of american and Korean, but I prefer eating the authentic Korean food because I am a Korean. read more

This place is pretty good if you need some decent priced tasty food in a hurry. When I was a student and had to get to class, Steve's was great because the food is cooked in ~5 minutes. The meat probably isn't the healthiest stuff in the world but it is pretty flavorful. I would suggest both the bbq beef as well as the short ribs. read more

My friends and I were around the area and I was recommended to eat at this restaurant not knowing what to expect. As we entered, our first impression of the restaurant was not great; the decor was a bit drab. Obviously, we could not judge until we tried the food. As our orders poured in from the front, I realized the portions were enormous, enough to feed two or three people for $14. The whole dish came in with rice covered by the bar-b-que of choice and sides including some bean sprouts and kimchi. The bar-b-que I ordered was the beef short rib and the meat was very tender and juicy, although there was a lot of fat. They are also known for their spicy sauce so I suggest if you're an avid spice lover, try an option of meat including the sauce. I believe some improvements could be made in the kimchi and the cleanliness of the restaurant itself, but overall, my friends and I were impressed by the meat and would come back. read more

I have been to Steve's Bar-B-Que on about 20 occasions, during the past 20 years. Steve's Bar-B-Que has a generous menu of various types of Korean food. Usually, I order bibimbap. On the plus side, this restaurant is only a block from the U.C. Berkeley. Also, the dining room is large, and the tables and chairs are sturdy and of high quality. The lighting is bright, which is good if you need to study. Also on the plus side, you can have unlimited amounts of tea from a large heated urn. The cooks are friendly, and they are likely to call you, "Amigo." On the minus side, it is a sad fact that Steve's Bar-B-Que is a slop house. The portions are not generous. The amount of rice is small. The side of kim chee that comes in its own dish, is always slimy and old. Recently (June 2015), I had supper at Steve's Bar-B-Que, and I noticed that the hot sauce was different from before. What I liked before, was the unique and attractive nature of the potent hot sauce. But now, the hot sauce is watered-down -- it is so watered-down that I have finally learned my lesson. No more Steve's Bar-B-Que. Too bad, too bad. For just three dollars more, I can go to CHAAM Thai restaurant, also located in Berkeley, and have an excellent meal of world-class, memorable, Thai cuisine. (Unfortunately, my former favorite Korean restaurant in Berkeley, which was named "Berkel-Berkel," has closed its doors. Also, unfortunately, since writing and posting this review of Steve's, CHAAM Thai restaurant also closed.) read more

Several of my friends have gotten sick from eating the barbecue from Steve's. It's the kind of place that you might like if you prefer quantity over quality - and there's nothing wrong with that! But if it's just gonna make you sick then the large portions are sort of pointless. I usually get the tofu soup from there, and I have to say, Berkel Berkel's is definitely better. This place is great when you're hungry, craving korean food and on a budget. They serve up some up hefty portions of decent food for pretty cheap. I'm not a big fan of the galbi or bulgogi, but the yukehjang and galbitang (both of the beef soups) are awesome. The kimchi and bean sprouts are kind of on the gross side, but for what you're paying, who cares. read more
