Needed movers because I couldn't ask my friends to help us move (I like my friends to stay that way). They came out and looked at all we wanted moved and listed it all and gave us a good estimate. We had a couple weeks to change items (some ended up selling with the house) and with those changes in place we awaited moving day. I don't know how to explain how great these guys were. They wrapped our items so nicely in blankets to avoid any damage. They were friendly and personable and way nicer to my 14yr old that kept asking them questions than they had to be. They didn't even grumble when I asked them to rearrange items when they got to the new house because I changed my mind where they should go. Best of all they moved a 300lb safe from a basement to another basement and tried their darnedest to get a standing freezer into the new house basement (unfortunately the logistics just didn't work). Unfortunately, our experience with this moving company was very disappointing. During the packing process, I had to repeatedly follow staff around to make sure things were actually being packed. Items were left behind in closets, kitchen items were missed, and overall there was a lack of attention to detail. We were also told that our toiletries were "too much" and they would not take them, and they refused to take unopened, brand-new laundry detergent. Communication became another major issue. We were notified less than 24 hours in advance that delivery would be taking place at 8:00 a.m. at our new home. We contacted ownership and simply asked if delivery could be moved to noon because my flight was not landing until 9:00 a.m. and my husband would arrive later that day. Instead of working with us, Angie was rude and stated that we already knew when they would be there. That was incorrect -- she appeared to be referring to the packing schedule, not delivery. I explained our travel situation and tried to communicate in advance. The next morning, I received a message stating they were signing paperwork as "customer not present" and leaving the load at the house. To make matters worse, we discovered damage and missing items: * One dresser was damaged * Another dresser was left laying on its side * Our Tempur-Pedic bed arrived missing wires/components * A decorative statue was damaged Moving is stressful enough, and we expected better communication, more care with our belongings, and basic customer service. We used Stevenson Transfer for two long-distance moves within one year: once when we moved from Chicago to Denver, and again nine months later when we realized Denver was NOT for us and moved back to Chicago. Thankfully, Stevenson made these very stressful processes far less so by being a dream to work with. Blindly searching for a long-distance mover is always a gamble, but Stevenson had good reviews and their office staff, Angie and Lorna, were very communicative and quick to respond when I first inquired about working with them. Before the first move, someone came to assess our place and what we were planning on moving in order to provide a very accurate estimate. Due to this level of service, we decide to hire them for our move. In the time leading up to the move, their office was on top of everything, reaching out to me to confirm addresses, times, loading dock access, etc. before I could even worry about chasing them down to coordinate logistics. On the day of the move, their foreman, Kevin, was right on time with a crew of movers who quickly got to work wrapping our furniture and loading up the truck. At no point did we see anyone being reckless with our belongings or feel like they were stalling to get more hours in. We took a few days to drive out to Colorado, and Kevin (who was driving the truck) was available via text or phone the whole time. He was at our new place exactly when he said he would be, and the new crew he was working with on this end quickly unloaded the truck and set up everything to our specifications. When we decided to move back to Chicago I was worried Stevenson wouldn't be available for our move as they are not based in Colorado and I would have to do the blind search for movers all over, but I took a chance and reached out to ask, and they were more than happy to move us again and didn't charge us anything extra for not originating in Chicago this time. We even had Kevin as our foreman again, who remembered us and was just as great to work with a second time around. Everything with the second move went just as smoothly as the first one, from the office staff communicating and coordinating to the moving crew doing the heavy lifting. Now that we are back in Chicago to stay, we plan to use Stevenson for any local moves we may do in the future. But hopefully not for at least a couple of years; we've had enough moving adventures to last us a while. read more

I have moved a lot. While the intake was lovely the packers were awful. Poorly marked boxes, Willy nilly paper on small things and none on others. Most of my larger furnishings , all high value, have damage. The insurance offered about 4k for thousands in damage as assessed in far excess by their own inspector. Blankets left lint inside a vintage lucite piece. A teak coffee table was nicked, lamp shades damaged, parts missing to a lamp that could not be put together, bed frame put together with a screw through the fabric, feet of a vintage brass shelf lost. We recently completed a move from Illinois to South Carolina. After researching many firms, we engaged three firms that appeared to meet our needs best. We then requested and received quotes from each. The range of the quotes was quite wide, surprisingly. While they were not the lowest quote, we ultimately hired Stevenson Transfer for this job because we were impressed with their responsiveness, professionalism and thoroughness. As it turned out, we made a good decision. Moving can be stressful and exhausting, and you don't need a moving company to complicate things. We were particularly impressed with our interactions with several of the Stevenson folks, including Angie who was our initial contact and overall coordinator and Bill, Jr. who came in person to complete our home inventory and estimate. Finally, we found Joe, the loading crew chief on both ends of the move (and the driver) to be exceptional. We found the crews on both ends of the move to be courteous and careful. Any out of state move is stressful but ours was especially so since the planned date moved up 3 weeks without much notice, due to circumstances beyond our control. We also had to clean our house the same day we moved, so that our tenants could move in the next day. Very exhausting and stressful. Our crew was outstanding in terms of both customer service and the physical logistics and the care of our belongings and pets. Our crew included Joe (driver and crew chief), Louis, Pete and Paulie. Our overly protective German Shepherd escaped confinement three times, my fault. I was so embarrassed but they took it all in stride with great sense of humor. They were flexible in order to help us with getting to the cleaning, and in clearing an area where our dogs could have more room. Could not have asked for more considerate and efficient people. I was initially very tired and apprehensive, but after these guys were there for only an hour I knew everything would be OK. Also initial paperwork, communication and organizational tips from Stevenson in general was very helpful. The last half of the move went well also. It's rare that I can't think of some improvement to suggest but this is one of those times. Talk about great customer service - from initial quote to actual move in/move out day, these guys were fantastic. Literally received 10 postcards in the mail for other moving companies and ALL of them got horrible reviews. I picked Stevenson because it had the most highly rated reviews. They didn't lie. Mike, the president of the company came out to our house personally to give us a quote. Unfortunately, TOTALLY OUR FAULT, we under-estimated how much stuff we had and we needed a second truck and crew to come out on move-out day. They did not charge us for the 2nd truck - only the 2 extra guys. TOTALLY FAIR! I can't say enough about the crew who moved us out and then the 2nd crew who moved us in. So professional, so personable - every one of them introduced himself. They were so careful and so thorough wrapping our things and asking appropriate questions. Sure made everything go smoother. As always moving is high stress. Bill Stevenson Sr came out and did my estimate, which was estimated at about twice what it should have been. I challenged the estimate at the time as I have moved the same items before. I was told it was a long carry and in February you never know what the conditions might be. So okay knowing it should be about half I agreed to use them. I was scheduled at 7 am, at about 7:20 am I get a call there is an issue with the truck. So they get there at 8 am. The move went ok they were careful and fairly quick. However I called and challenged some of the costs at the end of the move and lack of communication about those costs. Be aware if you choose to challenge their communication or costs you basically get a call back telling you you don't know what you are talking about. And if you don't agree too bad. I won't use them again and I sure will not recommend them to anyone. They are sorely lacking in customer service or customer care. read more

Moving is always stressful, but working with Stevenson was a great experience, despite the stress. From the estimate to the unpacking, this was the most professional moving company I've ever encountered. If they were all like this, movers would not have such a bad reputation. The office staff is friendly and helpful; the crew was competent, friendly, and courteous. Dave, the driver and crew chief worked as hard as the rest of the crew and showed up at our new home, with a smile on his face and a willingness to help in anyway that he could. We needed a specified move-in date to reserve the elevator at our new building and within a day or so after signing up with Stevenson, we received a firm date from the office. No other mover that I know of has done, or would do, that. No 10-day window that makes your life crazy trying to figure out when the movers will show up. We had them pack all or breakables and everything arrived safely and in the same condition it left. In sum, if you have to move, Stevenson is the best you can get. P.S. I just had Stevenson Transfer do a move for me. Wow !! The whole process was done in a professional and courteous way. When Mike arrived to do the estimate he asked all the right questions and answered all of mine. His estimate arrived the next day and was complete and easy to understand. I called and set an appointment and received a call to make sure everything was still ready for the move. The team arrived early and we went through the house explaining what, where and how everything was to be packed. The 4 man team moved swiftly and efficiently as they packed and when there were any questions they came and asked. Since there was a large mouse problem, house not lived in for 2 years, they would recommend when something was too contaminated to move. They always asked, never assumed, what I wanted. Once the packing was done they started to load the truck. That was one well oiled machine. They moved quickly, got the truck loaded and were ready to leave in no time flat. They were scheduled to arrive at the new place the next day at 7 am. They, again, arrived early. Talk about dedication! This time it was a team of 3 and, again, a well oiled machine that got the job done. When there was any question about where something was to be place, they asked. From the time Bill came to our home to do the estimate in Chicago until Dave, my crew chief, drove away after delivering in Denver, I honestly didn't spend a second worrying about our stuff.
