I booked these movers after I received quotes from half a dozen companies in the Chicago area. I…read moreshould have known that the low hourly rate and what was included in the price (tape, moving blankets) that it was too good to be true. I worked with Lily via email and Yelp messaging to confirm my move for October 27th at 7 am. I made sure that I requested 4 movers and one truck, as I wanted to get the move done as quickly as possible. In my initial conversation with Lily, she suggested going with just two movers, to which I politely declined, knowing that it would be more expensive (again, I wanted the move to be done so I could get to unpacking). I received my confirmation of the move on October 16th with all of the details. At this point, I was feeling pretty good. On October 26th (the day before the move), I received a call a little after 2:30pm from what I assumed to be the scheduler (I never got his name) asking if we could have the movers show up at 8am instead of 7am. Once again, I declined, saying that I booked for 7am and wanted to get the move completed quickly. I was then asked to decrease the number of movers to just 2 since I was only moving a 2 bedroom condo, to which again I refused. We ended the call agreeing again to 4 movers at 7am. I received another call from the same number (773-313-7777 for reference) at 8:30pm telling me that the moving company was short on people, so they would only be sending 2 movers, but the hourly rate was conveniently 60% of the 4 person rate ($65/hour for 2 movers instead of $105/hour for 4). At this point I was very frustrated and explained that I had been confirmed for 10 days and they needed to send 4 people. I was told that they couldn't, that they were sending two people, and the rate would be "just $60/hour." I told them to send as many as they could and I would pay what I thought was right, as I was already feeling the bait and switch. I then got a text message at 10:30pm that night (8.5 hours before the move) saying that everything was good and they were sending 4 people. Problem solved, right? The movers and truck showed up after 7am on Saturday, the 27th, and work began around 7:30am. The movers were definitely working hard, but from my previous experience with moving companies (I have moved 6 times in 10 years, including multiple cross-country moves), these guys were not moving with the speed to which I was accustomed. After talking to one of the movers on the way to my destination, he mentioned that moving is not his job, and that he was only helping out his friend to make some quick cash. The light bulb turned on at this point and now I knew why the move was going slowly: inexperienced movers who were out of their element. About halfway through the move (which was 5 hours in at this point and we hadn't even started unloading yet), I decided to pitch in and start carrying things myself. I have no doubt in my mind that this sped things up considerably. By the time all was said and done, the move took 10 hours and the entire day was shot. I tipped the movers and sent them on their way, after I was sure to note that a table was damaged. I made sure to pay via credit card (even with the 3% fee added on top versus paying via check) because I wanted to make sure I had some level of consumer protection. After I reported the damage to Lily via email within the 24 hour window to report damage, she responded on October 29th that she would forward the email to Nadia, the claims coordinator (amcmovingcorp@gmail.com) who would take care of it. Six days later on November 2nd I reached out to Nadia directly with the same information, but never got a response. Finally on November 7th I wrote both Nadia and Lily saying that I would be disputing my credit card charges for the value of the table ($100) unless I heard back by the end of the day. I'll let you guess as to whether I heard back or not (spoiler alert: nope). So now I have disputed the charges with my credit card company (luckily they charged my credit card 4 separate times and two of the charges added up to roughly the amount of the table). I'm sure that if I were to have paid by check (or cash as was initially suggested by the lead mover) that I would just be out the money. TL;DR: Poor planning/communication, inexperienced movers, no follow-up, bad experience

I proceeded to tell the woman the information and she starts accusing me of lying. She asked me how do I know the shoes even fit the movers? Did you ask them their shoe sizes? Then asked me why would their wear womens shoes? I told her they were my husband's new shoes. She then told me it doesn't make sense they would steal shoes when they could steal other things.. why do you think this happened? I told her you are asking me to explain something I don't understand either . Wow... first the movers steal from you then horrible customer service... never again.

Needed movers because I couldn't ask my friends to help us move (I like my friends to stay that…read moreway). They came out and looked at all we wanted moved and listed it all and gave us a good estimate. We had a couple weeks to change items (some ended up selling with the house) and with those changes in place we awaited moving day. I don't know how to explain how great these guys were. They wrapped our items so nicely in blankets to avoid any damage. They were friendly and personable and way nicer to my 14yr old that kept asking them questions than they had to be. They didn't even grumble when I asked them to rearrange items when they got to the new house because I changed my mind where they should go. Best of all they moved a 300lb safe from a basement to another basement and tried their darnedest to get a standing freezer into the new house basement (unfortunately the logistics just didn't work). Estimate came in a lot lower than we expected too. I would recommend them again in a heartbeat !!!

We used Stevenson Transfer for two long-distance moves within one year: once when we moved from…read moreChicago to Denver, and again nine months later when we realized Denver was NOT for us and moved back to Chicago. Thankfully, Stevenson made these very stressful processes far less so by being a dream to work with. Blindly searching for a long-distance mover is always a gamble, but Stevenson had good reviews and their office staff, Angie and Lorna, were very communicative and quick to respond when I first inquired about working with them. Before the first move, someone came to assess our place and what we were planning on moving in order to provide a very accurate estimate. Due to this level of service, we decide to hire them for our move. In the time leading up to the move, their office was on top of everything, reaching out to me to confirm addresses, times, loading dock access, etc. before I could even worry about chasing them down to coordinate logistics. On the day of the move, their foreman, Kevin, was right on time with a crew of movers who quickly got to work wrapping our furniture and loading up the truck. At no point did we see anyone being reckless with our belongings or feel like they were stalling to get more hours in. We took a few days to drive out to Colorado, and Kevin (who was driving the truck) was available via text or phone the whole time. He was at our new place exactly when he said he would be, and the new crew he was working with on this end quickly unloaded the truck and set up everything to our specifications. When we decided to move back to Chicago I was worried Stevenson wouldn't be available for our move as they are not based in Colorado and I would have to do the blind search for movers all over, but I took a chance and reached out to ask, and they were more than happy to move us again and didn't charge us anything extra for not originating in Chicago this time. We even had Kevin as our foreman again, who remembered us and was just as great to work with a second time around. Everything with the second move went just as smoothly as the first one, from the office staff communicating and coordinating to the moving crew doing the heavy lifting. Now that we are back in Chicago to stay, we plan to use Stevenson for any local moves we may do in the future. But hopefully not for at least a couple of years; we've had enough moving adventures to last us a while.

The amount of broken, damaged, or destroyed items is beyond belief! I've moved numerous times and never lost possessions like I did this time. It has been heartbreaking. The movers we hired to unload the truck (actual professionals, not pretend ones) couldn't believe how sloppily the truck was packed. We have solid wood tables with the legs snapped clean off, leather furniture with holes poked through, and numerous boxes that were just crushed and destroyed along with the contents. Boxes marked "fragile" we're put at the bottom of 9' high stacks of boxes and crushed to 1/3 of their size. Just because I have a lot of free time and I'm a masochist, I'm going to try to file a claim with their insurance company.

It is not very often that I post anything negative. But, given the multitude of damages and the…read morelack of a professional response from Verlys Pro Moving Labor I feel compelled to warn all. Here's the brief summary... Move scheduled over a month in advance for June 29th at 9am. Confirmed with them 1 week in advance. Truck, tools for furniture disassembly and shrink wrap were not provided, yet they said it would be. I had to scramble last minute to get a truck and we had to use our tools and labor to disassemble furniture. By the time we figured that out along with the mover's arrival we did not start moving until 3 hours late at noon. The two movers they did send were nice guys, but by no stretch were they experienced "pro" movers. It was hot, they rushed and we have what you can see in the pictures. The employee said he was not scheduled to work and was called last minute, he then called his brother who did not work for Verlys to help him. Yet, when I called with concern she told me I had two of their most experienced movers. 1 year of experience for one and 1 day for the other. So that is your most experienced? To top that off, because they were not even supposed to work they had to leave by 6PM, guess when the appliances were put on the truck - yep we had to unload those ourselves. So back to the pictures... Several pieces of furniture damaged, holes in walls that were just painted and deep scratches in the hardwood floors. Conservative estimate: $5-6K worth of damage. Would John Verly the owner call to even discuss after several requests through his so called manager, no they would not. Instead, tried to play victim that I only paid the labor and not the remainder of their fee. In my opinion, Verlys Pro Moving Labor who operates under cash only with no agreement or contract has done so because it is NOT a legitimate moving service as portrayed on Facebook. To further that, they are most likely fully aware that if they were to operate in a legitimate manner they would be opening themselves for being liable for situations like ours. Moral of the story - DO NOT use Verlys Pro Moving Labor.
