I have gotten a few pairs from them over the years, most recently last year. Consistently helpful and friendly. Mike patiently allowed me to try over a dozen frames to make sure I got what I wanted, and thoroughly explained all the features and options available for my lenses, without any pressure. I now return there whenever my prescription changes. Selection was plentiful for a neighborhood store, and prices were consistent with others. Sometimes I would go and there were people ahead of me getting helped; Mike and/or others consistently appeared to give them the same fine treatment described above. I love this place! I had stopped by about a year ago, for the first time, because my glasses were somehow broken on one side. (Im gonna blame it on my cat...) These VERY nice people fixed them for no charge! Turns out, they take my insurance, so of course I went right back to them! A lot of insurance selection is not very exciting, but this shop had a pretty good array! Nobody pressured me to make a choice quickly (I hate that!) And the very kind associate, who assisted me/processed the sale thru my insurance followed up in a few days via voicemail to make sure she had all of the currents info. Very nice professional place! And they have many high-end frames if you dont need to worry about insurance. Im pretty sure they will order what you want if it is not discontinued. I've been coming to this establishment for a minimum 10 years, I love this place. The staff is friendly, my insurance is always accepted here, and they're always punctual. If an appointment is for a certain time, you'll be served at that time! And they have an extensive knowledge on what eyeglasses fit best with your face. I was looking to replace my broken glasses near my workplace. I tried this optical and thought I would share my experience because the service was very good. First, they did not shame me for not bringing my insurance card. They were able to check my vision plan online. Next, the eye doc gave me a good exam. She was gentle and did not poke me in the eye. I loved that all the staff were wearing masks and they had hand sanitizers easy accessible on the counter. Everyone was nice and the doctor very competent. As am standing there and they have 2 people taking care of one person a third person comes out and says nothing after 5 uncomfortable minutes pass I walk out. Extremely rude and impatient lady that works there, don't bother having a question about your insurance or their products, she will be rude and give you an attitude cuz God forbid she had to be patient and provide good customer service. Also dont make her repeat herself cuz she will raise her voice the second time around. I fear for my life every time ive gone there for the last few years. There is a nice gentleman/owner with a mustache however, only deal with him. And most of the Dr's are nice. I am a freshman at Manhattan college and a week into classes I was having difficulty seeing the board. I made an appt. on Friday afternoon and was seen at 12:30 on Saturday. The service was great as I arrived early and was seen early. The receptionist was very helpful in helping me select frames. She was pleasant despite what other reviews might say. The thing for me that set this place apart from other opticians I have been to was the speed at which things happened. Within 24 hours of me scheduling an appointment I had an exam done, and walked out with my pair of glasses on my face. I had been coming here for years only to be consistently disappointed. I have tried to buy outside lenses because I cannot make it into their store every month, which just annoys them. They deny the requests that I submit via an online site, and when I call to ask why they don't care to explain. The same happened when I ordered glasses from a manufacturer that was not their store. Their prices are very high, and the options they have for most insurance policies is about ten pairs. The woman could not be ruder if she tried. Bottom line, if you are not buying from them and are specifically using them as an eye DOCTOR, they will get annoyed and in my case are less likely to help. I will NOT be coming here again. As others have stated, the customer service is deplorable. I felt like I was nuisance to the receptionist, who clearly had no interest in assisting me. I went today for my yearly eye exam and was also considering getting contacts for the first time. I was told by the Receptionist (not sure what her exact title is, but she handles the insurance information and scheduling) that my insurance provides $x for contacts and there's a $60 fee for the contact lens exam, which I'd have to pay out of pocket. She seemed perturbed when I asked some more questions about the extent of my coverage. I was told that my coverage for contacts was minimal so, I should just go with glasses. I was then directed to the carousel with frames provided by my insurance, none of which I liked. So I asked if it would be alright for me to find my own frames. "When??" she asked belligerently "Today?? Tomorrow??". I said I was considering getting some online and she told me, "oh no, that'll take way too long. Also, if anything happens to the frames while the insurance company is preparing them, they're not responsible" I said OK and asked exactly how much time I have to find the frames. She checked the computer and told me I actually had 2 weeks. As soon as I got home, I called my insurance provider and discovered that ALL of the information she provided regarding my vision insurance was incorrect! I had far more coverage for contact lenses than she led me to believe (the $ amt applied to contacts other than those offered by the insurance company), I had a week longer to choose frames AND the insurance company would compensate me if my frames were damaged in route to them/while they were preparing them. All this to say, I was very disappointed with this experience. Her terrible attitude was already an issue, but then to provide incorrect information on top of that is unacceptable. I can't speak to the owners competence, but this particular member of his staff seems like a liability. Needless to say, I decided to take my prescription to another optician. read more

I went to Steven John after having bought my glasses at a well-known Manhattan optician for about 15 years. I tried SJ because I wanted a place closer to home. I brought a prescription from another optometrist, so I just went for glasses. I first bought a pair of reading glasses and, since that experience was fine, I bought a pair of frames with progressive lenses. I thought both people I dealt with were nice and competent. The selection of frames was good, though less chi-chi than in Manhattan, which was fine with me. All in all, a good experience and I'll return. read more

Okay, here's the deal. My whole family has been going there for three years because it is incredibly convenient. I get an appointment right away, I like the doctor, and the prices are fair. Never had any problem. No, they aren't always cheerful but they take good care of my eyes! Don't let these reviews deter you if you want to give them a try.
