Reminds me of a line from the Flintstones' Parrot 'doctor is a plumber'. I called Riverdale Eye Associates and made a first appointment with a specific ophthalmologist since she participates in my insurance. When they called a couple of days before the appointment, the doctor's name they confirmed the appointment was with was not the same name I made the appointment with. It turned out that the M.D. ophthalmologist I made an appointment with transformed into a O.D. optometrist. The person on the phone stated they do the same thing. Hell no. Since the opthalmologist I have been seeing for years for both general and continuing concerns retired, I shall look again, but certainly not here. read more

Definitely a neighborhood friendly establishment. I went there for an eye exam and a new pair of eyeglasses. They worked with me to ensure I got the right prescription. In addition, the gentleman who helps you pick out your glasses, what a nice man! He defintiely helped me to decide what looked good on me and also kept it within my budget. I know this is not a place you would frequent all the time, but for the times that you have eyecare needs, look no further than this place. DR. VAYSTUB WAS WONDERFUL, unfortunately I cannot say the same for her staff. I am a black woman with facial piercings and when I arrived a male receptionist asked me what tribe I was from in Africa. He then proceeded to make up a fake African sounding word, pretending it could be my "tribe." He then said all I was missing was a bone through my nose! It was extremely racist and unprofessional. Later on, I heard him remark from across the room in front of everyone that he couldn't believe a client (who just walked out of the building) was 14 years old because "she got body!" Beyond inappropriate. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience and it is very unfortunate because Dr. Vaystub was lovely. If she has different locations where she works, I would visit her somewhere other than Riverdale Eye Care. read more

This is a great local place. My husband came to get his eye exam and new glasses. They saw him pretty quickly and were very efficient. They also were very nice to my toddler son, and were very welcoming. Yes, they don't have a giant collection, but they do have really nice options. I'm glad we found this place. read more

Don't waste your time. Took my daughter to see Dr. Gordon. She had a condescending tone from the beginning of the appointment. She commented on me being "young" which explains why she felt she could show a lack of interest in explaining things to me. I explained to her my concerns and my priority in regards to my daughters eye condition. She continuously referred to this as "what you are concerned with" as if this was . She was hesitant to explain and elaborate on my daughter's eye condition. When I asked her to clarify and elaborate she said, "I'm not elaborating?"!" As if she took offense that someone would ask her for more detail. I had to ask her for her recommendation for treatment.. again... hesitant... I thought that is what doctors are supposed to do. She suggested contact lenses (for a seven year old) and proceeded to tell say.. "I have to tell you.. they are cheap. They run about $1,000 per year".. another awkward pause. She seemed to expect a reaction from me after this statement. Each question I had was met with a patronizing tone. Don't recommend. read more

My husband and I have been going to Riverdale Eye Associates for years. Everyone in the office is friendly, caring, patient and kind. During my most recent visit I discovered there had been fraudulent activity on my bank account and I had to report the situation immediately. Dr. Landzberg was very understanding she offered to take other patients while I made my phone call. The receptionist even came outside to check on me to see how things were progressing and how I was feeling. Long story short I was more than pleased with the caring ,courteous, and professional service I received. Bill the optician has a great sense of humor and I am excited about the pair of eye glasses I will be receiving soon. I highly recommend Riverdale Eye Associates. read more

After finding out I may need glasses I decided to stay close in my area..I bumped into this place because of how clean and well kept it looked from the outside ...First to start off the receptionist(woman with short hair cut) is very welcoming and attentive and well spoken and answers all questions in a well spoken manner..the doctor was very kind as well answering all questions and kept a nice convo while getting examined to make me feel at ease...nice up to date technology in a clean place and my glasses that i thought would take two weeks came in like a week ...i also appreciate that i was coming in for contacts and instead of taking my cash money because it wasnt covered with my insurance, like others would the doc herself recommended save your cash in your situation glasses are better...glad i listened read more

I live close by, so Riverdale Eyecare is very convenient for me. One time I had a bad inflammation in one eye, and I was able to see a doc the same day w/o an appointment. They were able to squeeze me in after seeing my bloodshot eye and the distress I was in...Now that's what I call good service! haha. After the check up, the doc gave me a prescription for steroid drops and a few days later, my eye was back to normal. Also was able to get my prescription glasses within a week since they do everything in house. The lady who helped me picked out the frames for my glasses was super nice. She wouldn't let me leave until I found the right pair I liked and it was within my budget (I'm super picky with my glasses) She itemized the cost of everything which was good, since most places like to charge extra fees and you don't know what you're exactly paying for. My only gripe about this place is they seem understaffed, so the wait times can be long before someone can assist you. The place is ALWAYS packed with people. I guess that must be a good thing because they're getting business...but seriously, hire an extra hand or two. Otherwise I would've given this place 5 stars. read more

Dr. Vaystub is an phenominal doctor, she is very easy to talk to, extremely patient and cares about her patients. I had shingles and was concerned how this would affect my eyes in the future; she took her time to explain the effects of having shingles answering all my questions. Nija at the front desk greets you with her beautiful smile. She was very friendly, professional, and extremely obliging in helping me with my insurance. David was very professional and really took his time advising me on which glasses/lenses to get and making sure they are what I wanted, he was great. read more

I finally came in to get a pair of glasses. I liked the staff here from the women in the front desk, to the doctors and, other staff. I didn't have an appointment but I set one up for October 5th because I didn't have time to come in as a walk in. As the days were getting closer I walked in and tried my luck of seeing the doctor. The women at the front desk treated me just as good as any other client. She was informative of what was going to happen today and the steps I needed to take if I was going to get glasses. When I saw the doctor she was great not only because she knew what she was speaking about. But she also made sure to run a thorough eye exam on me which I have never experienced by going to other businesses. When we were done with the eye exam they had a great selection of eyeglasses. I found the perfect pair of eyeglasses for myself with their help. And not at any moment did I feel they were interested in making a profit than actually helping you find what you need. Also they were very genuine in their work it's definitely quality over quantity. I recommend their business to anyone that wants to be well taken care of. I appreciate all of their help. read more

This is absolutely stunning. If you read my review of Cohen's Fashion Optical (which I gave five stars and most gave only one star) you will note that I mention that once I purchased glasses from another Riverdale Optical place and felt it was the worst service I have ever been exposed to. That optical place I refer to in my Cohen's review is Riverdale Optical. Most of you seem to give it rave reviews or at the very least fairly good reviews. Yet my experience with them is such that even if they offered me any one of their glasses for free, I would turn down the offer. This place was great! I needed to get an eye exam for the DMV since it was time to renew my drivers license. I found both the receptionist and the doctor professional and very warm. Talk about convenience I must have been in there a total of 10 minutes!!. The doctor told me to go online 24 hours after she put the information online, since I passed the eye exam. There were a lot of people in the shop, so obviously they are doing a good business. The best part was it only cost $10, a bargain these days!! I joked with the doctor that I had walked by a million times and never noticed their store. Old Fashioned Customer Service!!! You won't be disappointed!! Really made my day, and was a pleasure!!! I brought my mentally disabled family member in to fill a prescription for glasses. We walk in, and she was having obvious trouble walking due to the snow/ice outside the store. Upon getting inside, the 2 young girls at the front desk could not be bothered to greet or even acknowledge us. I walk up to the desk to find them texting, and still had to get their attention. I asked if they took medicaid as that is the insurance my family member has, they confirmed that they do after checking their records. So we sat for a bit more, I then had to ask to see glasses for her. I even asked if I could pay for the price difference for non-medicaid specific glasses if the limited choices did not work for her; which they confirmed. The entire time my family member was trying on glasses, she was ignored. Neither one of the lazy workers, or the third worker in the back asked if we had questions, if we needed help, if the frames were ok, if we wanted to see anything else. Nothing. After we made the selection, I decided against buying a pair of glasses outright as I did not think that they deserved additional hundreds of dollars outside of all of our tax dollars for this, considering the level of disrespect shown to her. I was told on the 11th that it may be a week for the glasses to be complete, and they will give me call. I called on the 22nd, and was told that that were not done yet, but they could be done that that and I could pick them up. ****If they COULD be done the same day, why didn't they do it the same day we were there. I showed up Tuesday night (my call was Saturday after noon), and was told the glasses were not done yet, but they could be done in a few minutes. In my opinion, the who experience was unacceptable. *Obvious discrimination against the handicapped *Poorly trained staff *Terrible customer service *Product not delivered on time I voiced my concerns to those I believed as managers of the store the night I picked up the glasses. They said that they were surprised and would talk to the girls on duty that day. I'm not holding my breath. read more

They are hit and miss. The staff is friendly, but their hours vary widely. I've never seen them posted. When I go by the hours listed on Yelp, they are often closed. When I order contact lenses, they can take just a couple of days or up to two weeks to come in. I'd like to work with a store that's more consistent. read more

Loyal for years, even though I've moved out of the neighborhood- I find it hard to find the quality service and eye care anywhere else. The eye Doctor here really, truly stands out- she is very professional, warm and cares about her patients. Even though I am an easy patient type around medical professionals, I've had unpleasant and down right humiliating experiences with optical places and eye doctors in general in the past, and the staff here has restored my trust in dealing positively with eye sight issues and needs. They are humane here and very accommodating. There is a good reason why this has been a stand by in the area for so many years. The prices are right too- my whole family has been converted over the years and we've realized how much other places have tried to over charge or ripp us off on the past, never the case here. Even when I've done price comparison shopping, I've found that their selection is up to date and fair for a brick and mortar store- the service you get makes the experience a bargain. read more

Nasty rude secretaries who will treat you according to your insurance. If you have HIP don't bother with these people. They will act like your insurance is beneath them and try to humiliate you. And then they will refuse to see you and make snide comments about how it's because of the insurance you have and then try to charge your insurance anyway. I went in because I've been having eye fatigue and then after having us wait for 2 hours because they decided to tell us last minute that we needed a referral and that they pretty much told us that they weren't planning on attending to me and that they wanted to just do an eyeglass fitting and general eye exam. I'm sorry, but what kind of clinic makes an appointment without getting a referral first? These people don't have it together. It's just a racket to push their overpriced glasses onto people, and then try to charge you even if you don't show up. These people are crooks, stay away! read more

A couple of years ago I went to Riverdale Optical and the waiting time was ridiculous (was seated close to two hours). I left quite upset. Yesterday I went to Stephens Optical on Riverdale Avenue and vision has changed so I selected to purchase 2 separate pairs of glasses (1 for distance and second for reading). Unfortunately, they do not take my insurance and cannot afford two pairs out of pocket. My plan was to return to Riverdale Optical today with script in hand to select a frame, but after reading some of these reviews I see not much has changed. Thank goodness for YELP. With so many local options for eye care, there isn't a single reason to choose Riverdale Eyecare on W. 231 Street. The staff there like to close the office early without warning clients, speak to people in a condescending tone, and require multiple follow-ups for basic services -- like filling a prescription for eyeglasses. My insurance is very limited, so when I made the unfortunate mistake of having an eye exam there, I was stuck with the choice of either sticking it out with RE or paying out of pocket to go somewhere else. I chose the latter. RE just isn't worth the aggravation. read more
