Kevin is great and easy to work with. He's done three projects for me now with tailoring existing drapes I already own. He came to my house each time to measure and all three times the tailoring has been perfect. Definitely recommend Kevin and Sterns Draperies. read more

Lots of fabric! I need a 1/2 yard of two different types of fabrics for my intro sewing class. My only thoughts were that I was looking for fabrics that would go easily hrough a sewing machine for a beginner that was not too expensive. He brought me to "scraps." I found 4 yards (total) of two different fabrics I used to make this pillow (front and back). Please admire them! Per my sewing instructor, it was a good price! $30 + tax. Thanks for the help! People who feel overwhelmed by all the fabric when you enter. It is a lot of fabric- but he was very helpful! read more

Kevin was the best! As I was begrudgingly was driving to make the journey downtown for some lace, I last second called to see if Stern's carried any lace. Not only did I had a huge selection to choose from, but I also got inspired for upcoming projects from all the fun fabrics around me! I ended up with two yards of beautiful lace for about $30, which I was stoked about. Truly a hidden gem in the valley and I can't wait to come back for my next project! read more

Wow wow wow! I had the pleasure of meeting the owner on a Friday afternoon. This place is a treasure trove of drapery fabric just incredible! This is the absolute place to go if you need draperies, Roman shades, or any kind of window covering that involves fabric. I'm just trying to figure out what to do first!! read more

I love this place!! A treasure trove of vintage to modern fabrics and they are in stock!! Kevin is super nice and helpful and generous with samples. Just call ahead to make sure he's around. read more

Wonderful selection and service! I came in just needing a little fabric for an upholstery job and the owner was very helpful. Will be back!

Kevin Stern was relentless in helping me to replace an "ancient" traverse rod. All this was done by phone. His installer was professional and had years of experience. Total satisfaction! Since when are societal problems in a community the responsibility of one small business owner. Those who complain about the growing number of homeless should themselves get involved in solving issues. Isn't it some value to patronize a well-run, honest and hard working small business owner? read more

I just bought a new house and I needed a lot of fabric, so I decided to check this place and man, once u r inside, u will be blown away with the crazy beautiful options they have, I decided to do business with Kevin (the owner). He gave me a special price and really took care of me. I'm happy to support this local store, and I'm even more happy with the maxing fabrics I bought. I will recommend this store to anyone read more

I drop off my kid here at his moms. Been doing it for years. It's always been clean. For those of you who are complaining how dirty it was... that its not the normal. I spoke to the owner because he was frustrated that the week he was on vacation , with his family , it ended up like that. This guy is not at fault. Our city is not being taken care of. That includes business owners and to the homeless who are victims of the polices we have right now. Our government is not doing their jobs. So before you leave a nasty comment, take look around. People are trying to get by while our country falls into a depression. read more

Just want to address the bad reviews first. You can't rate a store because of a problem that should be taken up with the city. The reviews are on the business it's self not the the streets of LA county. I shop there all the time and never once had an issue. It's on a busy street with lots of people around, I don't know how anyone can feel threatened. The store owner Kevin is wonderful person with the absolute best fabric. He has the most variety out of any store At the best prices. He's 1/3 of the prices you'll see per yard at any other fabric store. Everything from beautiful sheers to heavy duty upholstery fabric, he's got in varieties of colors and textiles. This is the last true fabric store standing. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

I looked online to see where I could get my antique chair reupholstered and found Stern Draperies on Ventura. When I pulled up, I could not even get out of my car, because of all the homeless people gathered on the property and trash strewn everywhere. I was shocked to see this in Sherman Oaks. There were definitely people smoking something other than pot and guys urinating in the corner outside of the building. There was no way I was going to get out of my car with all of that going on. There were at least 10 people there that clearly needed mental health care and housing. This place did not look or feel safe for anyone to go into. I drove away and found another place that did a great job at a very fair price. read more

If you're looking for one of a kind, hard-to-find fabrics this is the place. Kevin is a legend and is keeping this valley gem alive. He's helped us out countless times find the right fabric for our custom window dressings and reupholstering. Good prices and an insanely good collection to choose from. read more

As many have said, a great find for those looking for a special fabric that's in stock on the roll for upholstery and draperies etc., and it is a good idea to check hours prior to your visit. If you're up for the challenge , you may get lucky and find exactly what you need . Nice selection of high end fabrics. Plenty of free parking on the east side of building, (and you easily avoid those characters that hang out across from 7-11 on Sterns Ave!) read more

Comments about homeless people or homeless encampments are completely unfounded. This store has first rate fabrics and a helpful owner. It is well worth making your way through it's crowed stacks, it is jammed with gorgeous materials. read more

I'm a buyer for tv set decorators, and I must say this gem of a store has been off my radar all these years. Kevin the owner is helpful and friendly and has a most unique stock of fabric. Lots of vintage 60s, 70s, and 80s, as well as contemporary... his stock is massive and looks a bit askew, but to the trained eye there is pure gold in here. Production / studio friendly... all the times you feel guilty about giving all your budget to a bigger named chain store, Stern's is the mom & pop we want to keep in business a long time. Pay a visit (but call first just to make sure he's open when you want to go :) read more

We gave Kevin a difficult job to take 6 long window curtains and transform them into sliding door drapes using old, highly embroidered fabric. Stern Draperies did a masterful job beyond our expectations and we couldn't be happier....and done at a very competitive price. read more

I was looking to recover my childhood mid-century chair and I walked into Stearns and met Kevin ... they have so many Fabrics it's unbelievable but we managed to find exactly what I was looking for and he was able to work within my budget to redo my chair . I picked up my cushions today and they're just wonderful I cannot say anything more than what extremely pleasant experience it was and what a nice guy Kevin is ! read more

Found this place on yelp looking for fabric to make my Halloween costume. So glad I found it cus I didn't want to make the drive to downtown. I got what I needed with a great price and the owner is really friendly too! Came around 2 and there's no homeless person in sight. read more

Stern's Draperies - Fabric Stores Near Me - Los Angeles, California

This family owned business is a treasure trove of both current and vintage dead stock vintage fabric. If you are looking for something amazing for your boho throwback decor or 80's glam revival decor, look no further. Want something for that early 90's southwest vibe? It's all there under one roof! I found treasures I never thought possible, and the prices are reasonable. Kevin is extremely helpful, although you may want to call before you arrive as he is mostly a one man operation. This is a truly one of a kind store. read more

This place is awesome. I went here looking for swatches for a coach reupholstery project, after a pretty mediocre search on Melrose. This is a very well-stocked family-owned fabric shop. They'd actually gotten two new shipments when I got there, and were a little overwhelmed... only the owner, Kevin, was running the place (his assistant recently passed away, poor guy.) Despite having to man the phones and deal with the store, he was super nice, helpful and accommodating, and even climbed up to get to a distant roll to get me a swatch. I got at least seven good options at EXCELLENT prices (and the quality was high.) They've got basically anything you'd need for drapes or upholstery with wholesale prices. No need to schlep all the way over to Downtown where the parking sucks and the sales people give you the stinkeye when you can just get it here from Kevin! read more

Owner was very friendly and didn't hesitate to grab more and more materials for us. There are some beautiful imported fabrics in this place. Recommend coming in and exploring. read more

Love this fabric store. A hidden gem and really reasonable prices. Kevin was extremely helpful. Highly recommend!!!!!

I never realized Stern's was there before - apparently they just painted the exterior of the building blue and it caught my eye so I stopped in. I've been on the hunt for new drapes and received bid from another company that was ASTRONOMICAL. Kevin's pricing was less than half of the other company's bid. Kevin's shop is an adventure in itself - stacks and stacks of bolts of fabric in all weights, patterns and colors. I found the perfect materials for blackout roman shades for a bedroom and lined drapes for our living and dining room. Can't wait to see the final product! read more

I was looking for some fabric, read the reviews and went in to take a look around. I thought they only did draperies and window treatments, but what I found was an almost overwhelming selection of fabrics from which to choose. The owner Kevin is extremely friendly and personable. I found exactly what I was looking for at a good price. They have everything I want in a store - selection, price and service. I have no reason to shop anywhere else. read more

What an amazing find for fabrics and upholstery. Kevin is absolutely terrific, knows his inventory, and is a pleasure to work for. My wife and I love this neighborhood establishment and found fantastic fabric we couldn't find anywhere else, and at great prices! read more

So I live right behind Stern's Draperies and yes there were a few homeless guys setting up their belongings Only at night time. I went over and spoke to Kevin the owner in which he had no idea this was going on. This was all happening at night when the store was closed. Kevin INSTANTLY resolved this situation. They are no longer there. He is a great guy and does great work. These pictures are not a true depiction of this place. It happened three nights in a row and the problem is resolved. read more

I have gone here a few times and am done. Each time I go the parking lot is like a mini version of skid row. Homeless people , shopping carts, trash, all around the building. If I wanted that I would go to downtown LA. I will not go back here and unless you want to be confronted by homeless people arguing with each other (and you), I would stay away. read more

This place is a crowded, claustrophobic warren of incredible treasures. Kevin inexplicably knows where to find anything and everything, and is incredibly helpful and patient. I could have spent hours in here. I'll definitely be back, and am so thrilled this place is in my neighborhood. One of a kind. read more

Excellent fabric store. Although I have not purchased any special, beautiful fabrics yet, I love going to this place. The selection is great and massive! It's fun to walk around through it all. The prices seem fair, and the owner is very helpful and friendly but not in your face and "salesman-like." I look forward to coming here when I have some more projects in mind. There's parking in the back and it's a fun place to go to get ideas. read more

Kevin is such a NICE man! Wonderful selection, albeit very crowded. It's like an adventure though, there are goodies around every corner, you never know what you might find. Prices sounded phenomenal, too! Perfect for those upholstering projects. read more

I was just back at Stern's yesterday and was very impressed with how much beautiful fabric there was in the store. I'm a long time customer and will soon be having them make more window treatments for my home. The silk drapes they made for me years ago still hang in my house, I love them. Next, Roman shades for the kitchen and bedroom. I wouldn't have anyone else make them! Check them out, you will be amazed by what you can find there! read more

Excellent service and pricing. Place has changed a bit from 1971......good to see they are still in business.

These are the nicest people probably in the world. I broke the cord in my draperies and Kevin was so polite and considerate about my feeling so badly, as he had fixed it several years ago. I am handicapped right now (really bad car accident - not my fault) and I couldn't close the drapes..up comes Dee to see what he can do -only a couple of hours after I spoke to Kevin - and what he does is/are perform miracles. The drapes are up, they slide as though they are on an electric glide and my faith in honest and capable merchants has been completely restored. They even told me that should I break the cord again, just call them, and they will be right back! So nice and oh yes the price, so very fair. Before you go anywhere else give Kevin a call you won't need to call anyone else. read more
