I've headed to DTLA in the past for fabric, but I wasn't looking forward to that for just 1 yard of black cotton. So I grabbed a GF and headed to Canoga Fabrics in Canoga Park. While I was at first a bit surprised at the small space, I quickly realized there was A LOT to offer. HELLO Joseph! I asked for black cotton and he showed me a sampling to check out while he finished with other customers. I found THE PERFECT SHADE OF BLACK! I just needed 1 yard, so Joseph got that cut quick as a whip, I paid cash, and out I went. $8 for a yard of 60" black cotton is VERY FAIR. Sorry I forgot to snap pics, I think I was delirious with delight at being able to tick this errand off my list! I now have a new fabric option for the rare times - yeah, like once a year - I have a project to complete. While there is a Public Parking lot behind Canoga Fabric, I parked at a meter on the street and fed in enough for 2 hours so we could check out a few other places I was surprised about along this corridor of Sherman Way. I wanted to buy ribbon various color sizes and types. When I walked towards the back of the store to look at the ribbon, I was flabbergasted!!! my eyes open so wide my mouth dropped open. I had just stepped into ribbon heaven. I came away with maybe 20 different ribbons, maybe 5 yards each and $48 bill. Well worth it. I wanted various types to make ribbon book markers. Joanne has experience in cat-proofing with her own little critters, and she swore by the fabric that looked great after 7 years and counting in her house. It definitely gave us confidence, even knowing how destructive our little critters can be. Joanne was extremely responsive and most of our communication was accomplished remotely, but we also benefited greatly from visiting the office and going through fabrics. She gave us a competitive price that INCLUDED pickup and delivery, which is a rarity these days and made for an UNBEATABLE price. The sleeper sofa was no easy task for delivery, but Joanne's crew was amazing in bringing it back in pieces and reassembling on the spot! Perfectly done. The quality of the upholstering work is impeccable. Joanne's team did such a good job that we now know the areas where Room & Board skimped, as Joanne's team did not skimp! After numerous scarfs and blankets it was time to reach out to a store where i could purchase my supplies, but also get support as I take on more challenging projects. Vanessa was kind enough to help me pick out a hat pattern online and she suggested yarns in the store that would be easier for my first hat. After purchasing my materials, she suggested that i sit down and start my project. One of the kind ladies working on their projects not only helped me start my project, but she put in a lifeline (learned something new). I sat and chatted with the group as I worked on my project. I choose this store even though it is further away from my home because it is open W-F until 7 pm so I can go over after work for help. They are open on the weekend. And lastly, as I expected there is a community of knitters willing to help. I'm overjoyed to have found a place to learn and challenge myself after working solo for so long. Lastly, the yarns in the shop are beautiful and I found the prices in line for the quality. I'm willing to pay a bit more for quality and for support.
