I had heard a few good reviews about Stephens from neighbors, so I decided to give them a try for some small work on my house. When my bill arrived, I was shocked to see that I was being charged for 2.5 hours of labor (at $150/hr, so every bit matters). The two men who worked on my house did not work more than 2 hours, so I called in to speak to someone in billing, and that's when the worst part of my experience with Stephens began. The man on the other end of the line was rude, condescending, and downright insulting. I explained the issue to him, and I told him I'm happy to pay this bill, but that extra half hour is incorrect and unfair. He said, "Well I see that they were at your house for 2.5 hours." And I said, "No, they were there for maybe 2 hours and 15 or 20 minutes, and 15-20 of those minutes were spent in their van in my driveway." I remembered that was the case because I needed to get to work, and I felt too uncomfortable to go ask them to please move. Why did I feel uncomfortable? Because when the two men were in my house, I walked in on the plumber's assistant snooping around one of my bedrooms. There was absolutely no need for him to be in there, and when you're a young, single woman, experiences like that are not only creepy but also very intimidating. I told the man on the phone that story, and he said, "Well, I don't know anything about that." No kidding, dude, that's why I'm telling you right now because that's unacceptable behavior. Then his story changed as he explained, "Oh well I see that they were at your house for 2 hours and 10 minutes and then they turned their van on and sat in the driveway for 10 minutes." This shift made me more irritated, so I asked, "Has it occurred to you that they might have been in the van for more like 15-20 minutes and waited to turn it on?" I reiterated the fact that I'm perfectly happy to pay the bill, but that I had been unfairly overcharged and just wanted that $75 half hour labor charge removed. The man on the other end of the phone continued to speak to mean in a harsh and demeaning tone. Then I explained to him that the plumbers had accidentally messed up my showerhead during their work and had to come back on another day to fix it--thereby causing me to have to take off another half day of work, which cost me both money and time. Not only did the man on the other end of the line not care, he then started to say something about well even if they didn't work 2.5 full hours we have one-way transportation fees. And I said, "Excuse me? That not only wasn't explained to me when I scheduled my appointment, it also isn't listed on my invoice as a charge, so that sounds pretty phony to me." When I asked if I could speak to someone who could remove the excess charge, he said no. And that was it. Some customer service. I don't spend my time on the internet writing bad reviews, but this was a truly awful experience, and I really expected so much more from a respectable, family-owned company. I will be advising all of my neighbors and friends not to utilize Stephens's services moving forward unless someone from Stephens reaches out to correct this wrong. I'm no scam artist--just a young woman looking to be treated fairly and with respect. read more
