Needed a Cartridge replacement for a Shower & Tub combo. They wanted to charge the $645 for the repair, which seemed extremely high for what appears to be a relatively straightforward job. After researching the part online, I found the replacement cartridge available for less than $75. It appears to be a 30-minute job. I asked the supervisor for a breakdown of the cost between labor and material. He said that they don't give a breakdown. They appear to be hiding their labor cost, which seems to be very high. I wouldn't let the technician do the job and pay an $80 fee for the visit. read more

I contacted a plumber because I didn't have time to handle a minor repair myself -- a simple faucet stem and valve seat replacement. The plumber showed up on time, which initially seemed promising. I led him to the issue and clearly explained what needed fixing. He briefly touched the faucet handle and tapped the wall, then asked to inspect the plumbing from the basement. After glancing at the water lines leading to the bathroom, he informed me he'd step out to his vehicle to "write up a quote." About 20 minutes later, he returned with a legal pad and handed me a quote: approximately $1,700. The estimate included installation of shutoff valves in the basement -- completely unrelated to the original problem. Naturally, I declined and asked if he was going to address the leaking faucet, since that was the purpose of my call and I needed to resume my day. His response? "That's my quote. That's what I see needs to be done." At that point, I politely asked him to leave. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I was furious -- not only did he refuse to address the issue I called about, but he did so with an arrogant tone. I will never use Standard Heating, Cooling & Plumbing again, and I'll make sure others are equally informed. And yes, I still had to pay the $80.00 visit fee, despite the fact that he tried to inflate a minor repair into a major project I didn't ask for or need. I couldn't help but think: if I were a senior citizen, he might've had a field day. That's unacceptable. read more

We have been customers with Standard for at least 10 years in our last 3 homes. We've been blue chip members (yearly maintenance plan) and have typically received excellent service with knowledgeable technicians and fast service. Unfortunately, our last experience and current experience have not lived up the standard we've experienced in the past. We had about $1k in repairs done on our AC last month. The system went out again yesterday. I managed to make an appointment online for today (Sunday) but my partner called to see if we could be seen same day. They told my partner they could not come same day which was understandable since it was late in the day. I received a confirmation text and email for today (Sunday) but when a technician did not show during our time slot, I called. The representative said that there was no one available to come see us today because of multiple emergencies this AM. This was odd because we called with an emergency last night. The representative said it would have to wait until Monday. The representative was not apologetic or sensitive to our needs (we have a 7 month old and can't 'tough' out another 24 hours without AC) This was extremely frustrating as there was no attempt to address our problem that Standard "fixed" a month ago but has since broken. read more

Set appointment up 3 days in advance and they sent me the appointment via Email, when I called and confirmed the date of the appointment she said I did not have an appointment! Wasted time off from work and said they would not honor coupon I GOT IN THE MAIL! Even if I had the appointment. Run fast from this scam. I called because we had water backing up into our sink when we ran our washing machine. Our washer shares a wall and plumbing with our kitchen, so I felt fairly confident it was a plumbing issue. The technician who came out was very nice, but ultimately suggested that the problem we were experiencing was an appliance issue. The only plumbing-related insight he offered was that our pipes are aged and should be replaced, an unrelated issue for which he provided an estimate. The next day I had an appliance technician come out and it took him all of 5 minutes to show me that the issue was a blockage coming from our kitchen pipes. When I called Standard to discuss my frustration that our original problem, now clearly a plumbing problem, hadn't been addressed I was met with a multitude of technicalities. At the end of the day, I paid a plumber to come out and tell me that my plumbing issue wasn't a plumbing issue and that I needed to replace the pipes under my house--and the company was unwilling or unable to understand my frustration. You'll be better off sticking to someone local who will work with you to solve a problem. read more

Day 1 I was charged $257 for less than two pounds of R410 Freon. AC still not working. We knew it was probably the fan blower unit still under warranty. In day 2 the tech agreed and wanted $387 to replace a basically free blower unit, a 30 minute job. He said that was to cover his time going to get the unit. BS I pay $100 an hour for driving. Basically asked him to leave the premises. I don't like being robbed. read more

In the midst of the freeze across the country, our heating stopped working. We called Standard Heating, Cooling & Plumbing in Birmingham, AL, and they said a technician will be at our home within the hour. A few minutes later we got a call that a technician is on his way to us. Indeed, Darryl arrived promptly, was as pleasant and patient as can be. He was a well trained and experienced professional who did a great job in getting our heat back on and explaining what he did and what we should do to trouble shoot in the future. The charge was reasonable and definitely worth every penny! The company owner contacted me by phone the same day offered me a refund of my service charge and discussed what he could do for me if I was still in need of service. We purchased a new second level unit from this company and had it installed, upon the final install, the unit was making an unually loud sound from the fan. The techs assured this was a normal sound. 1 year later, upon the maintenance of this unit, the company told me the fan motor was defective and wanted $500 for labor to replace it. The tech said it was a multiple hour job. I asked to speak to Tom, the owner who was rude and pompous about the entire situation, wasn't actually interested in hearing me out. After attempting to discuss with him, he abruptly cut me off and agreed to replace the motor, but would then discontinue servicIng our units. Low class. This isn't being customer centric. If Tom can't make money off you for unjustified reasons, Tom doesn't want you as a customer. It's important for residents to know that HVAC techs are paid commission to upsell you parts on every visit while some make over $100k a year doing this. Be wise, don't fall for their used car sales tactics in the dark. Undertand how they make money so you're not taken advantage of. read more

Technician was very pleasant, but of course tried to add additional features. What I wasn't impressed about was paying nearly $300 to replace a shower valve. Yes I am aware plumbing can empty your pockets, but gesh! $120 an hour and $90 for a cartridge is just outlandish. Basically they charged and extra $40 for a $50 cartridge. read more

Have used Standard for 20 Yrs. Most of the time very satisfied. The latest was an issue with our tankless hot water heater. After properly cleaning it out & doing the general service recommended things seemed to be fine. The next day had the same problem again. Curtis & Brian were prompt with their response to my call. THey got on the phone with the manufacurer & went thru' ALL the various codes Noritz (manufacturer) has for this product. I do not trust this company for 2 reasons. 1. We were having issues with our shower backing up with sewage in Nov 2013. We called in standard due to their good reviews online. They came promptly, they supposedly cleaned out a clog, took our money and went on their way. This first encounter was great. On NYE, it started to happen again. We called them, they did the same thing again, took our money, and mentioned it might need more work but they were unwilling to do in on NYE. They said there might be a tree limb or something growing into our pipes. They would not do anything about it that day. Well, we had other home issues (frozen pipes, ceiling cave in). We were out of our house for 10 weeks. The week after we moved back in it started again. We brought another plumber (HNR plumbing) in today. There was a huge stick stuck in the trap behind our house. It was an easy fix. Standard never even went to the back yard to look for the trap. Standard charged us $400 and did not achieve anything. 2. When we were having all the other issues dealing with a frozen pipe. Standard came in to fix the frozen pipe. There were no issues with his work. But he highly recommended a company to help us with clean up and restoration (DEC). That company was horrible. It was a very bad experience. We finally had to fire them and get another company. It extended the time we were out of our house. It increased the cost for our insurance company. I should not have trusted Standard's recommendation. I wouldn't have if I had known they had not properly fixed the problem above. read more
