they made me mouth appliances for my TMJ issues. Staff seems nice. Place must double as a church with all the Christian symbols everywhere. I have waited a week to post this review as I needed to complete my follow-up with my cardiologist. I was referred to Harkins TMJ, Pain & Sleep Management by my ENT; My ENIT doc will be notified of what Harkins did to me. On my first visit, I was shown a very small mouthpiece to help me with my sleep apnea. I ended up with a very large hard plastic device with fangs for 2400 dollars. It was not anything like the device they showed me. I did my paperwork and medical history; however, it was clear they did not review it. I have a heart condition. They assured me this would be good. They told me I may have to wear my CPAP with the device; I asked what the purpose of the 2400 device was. They said I can turn the pressure down. They clearly had no clue. When I got the large device with fangs, I knew it was not what they showed me; I told them I was a mouth breather. They said it was fine and even better that I was on oxygen. The Dr. even stated I could use oxygen while my mouth was open. When I called the next day and said I could not sleep and my breathing was hard, the doctor told me I did not need to wear the CPAP and they would adjust them with a rubber band, and that would help me sleep. Three days into this device and the paramedics were called on me with a blood pressure of 198 over 90, and I was throwing PVC's. They asked if there was anything that had changed in my life. I told them about how the doctor at Harkins told me it was okay to wear oxygen with my mouth open, the paramedics told me to wear my CPAP and get rid of the dangerous device. They were literally stunned they would give the advice. They asked if they were medical docs and I said they were dentists. My cardio follow-up was equally as stunned by what they did and the advice they gave and told me to write reviews and to take action. This place is careless, and I was charged 400 bucks for making these dangerous devices given to me by a dentist who thinks you can use oxygen with your mouth opened. I now have to go through some cardio testing and further treatment. I will be reporting them to the BBB and the National Dental Association. My doctor and the paramedics said not to let this go; it was negligence on their part. Please be careful. They have no clue about medical conditions or even how to use oxygen. read more

I have been dealing with sleep apnea for nearly two years now. This is such a long, tiring (sleep apnea...tiring...get it?) issue. There are many options available, from CPAP machines to mandibular devices, etc. After my sleep study (with a different doctors office) I was told that a CPAP machine was my best option. After speaking with a friend, he told me about the mandibular device. Granted, my Manfolk would have had a hard time resisting my ultra-sexy Darth Vader sound. I met with Dr. Gray who set me up with the mandibular device and then with another doctor to review my meds. I am happy to report that I have deleted several prescriptions and sleep well now. It may sound silly but I feel that Dr. Harkins office truly saved my life. This is the place to come! read more

I was referred to this office by my dentist to help address some ongoing TMJ issues - as well as some general orofacial pain. I see Dr. Matthews and love his kind, positive, knowledgeable, and thoughtful approach to care. He has a great sense of humor, too - which really helps me to feel at ease. My oral appliances have been a lifesaver and we continue to work through a variety of options for my care. Dr. Harkins is supposed to be a very good dentist/oral surgeon but there are others in the same field as good or better who don't have the same level of arrogance as Dr. Harkins who seems to have some sort of God complex. If you question him in any way he turns downright nasty. Also worth mentioning, his staff members are as cold as ice. read more

I've been going to Dr. Harkins for over 15 years now. When I started I was in awful shape. My jaw locked open a couple times. I was in daily pain. A friend of the family knew someone who knew Dr. Harkins so even though I lived in Phoenix at the time, we made the trip to Tucson to see Dr. Harkins. Dr. Harkins totally changed my life. He made me a mouth guard - I'm telling you, nothing beats a custom-made mouth guard. He taught me exercises to do and what the eat and not eat. My pain went from a daily 6,7,8 to a 3,4 to often zero. So why have I gone for 15 years? Because literally every couple years I go in for a tune-up of the custom-made mouth guard. I chew the hell out of the thing while I sleep but they can build it back up. It's amazing! And I've also had a couple custom-made mouth guards made over the years. As they've learned more about the disorder, they've changed how they make the mouth guards, lower vs. upper, where the bite points are, etc. I hear now they have people use a lower/upper combination in a rotation but those mouth guard combos are expensive so I just had my four or five year old mouth guard built back up again and went on my way. They've always been very responsive to my needs in terms of coming from Phoenix and being self-pay. They're not pushy or fear-mongers. They're patient and kind and it's always been a great experience or I wouldn't keep driving to Tucson when I'm visiting family in Phoenix. It's not the most beautiful drive. Every time I meet someone who's got bad TMJ or TMD - whatever they call it these days - I tell them there's hope. I tell them about my experience. If you're suffering and your in the Tucson area or you're in Phoenix and cannot get proper care, I suggest you go see Dr. Harkins. read more

I have a problem with dr. Gray who works in this office making the mild for me to use. I went there with insomnia after trying the sleep apnea machine which did not work for me. I tried the device for 2 weeks and realised it was RUINING my teeth which I had just finished a year of wearing my invisilions. Perfectly pretty great teeth. Until I wore dr. Gray's appliance. I went in and she realised something was wrong and even asked if I had surgery to change my teeth. Needless to say I walked out with Nothing. She did not apologise or offer to redo the appliance or refund my money. I feel totally let down. I would never recommend these people., and I have walked away dejected. read more

Most of my experience with dental work in Tucson has been business as usual for the most part till I went to Dr. Harkins. He really pays attention to the patient and doesn't make you feel like another number in the chair, which to me is very comforting given the uncomfortable situation that chair puts me in. Also it isn't just a typical doctor experience, not only does he focus on the issues at hand but also gives insight into potential problems in the future of your dental issue as well the preventative measures you should take to alleviate those issues. I have been dealing with TMJD since I was a child. Now, over 28 years later, and 8 specialists (along with a lot of frustration and money) later, I have found someone that is proactive, and realistic in his approach. For the first time in 28 years, my pain has decreased by 80% and my range of motion has increased as well. Dr Harkins saw me for sleep apnea. He made an oral device to hold my jaw and tongue forward. I have had it adjusted once. I have been wearing it for 6 months and my wife now sleeps without ear plugs. I First saw Dr. Harkins when I was 19yrs old & dislocated my jaw after night of grinding my teeth. He was wonderful. I was diagnosed w/TMJ, Got my Jaw back in place & a Night guard. Over the last 18 yrs I have been dealing w/TMJ in the way of headaches upon waking up from Grinding/Clenching during my sleep. But did not 2 go bk & see Dr. Harkins until about 6 mos ago.I just saw my General Dentist for any issues that came up with my TMJ. About 6 months ago I was at my Dentist having wk done. The simple act of opening my mouth brought me 2 tears. After telling my Dentist I have been having more issues than usual w/my TMJ in the last yr or so & they are progressively getting worse w/time. It was then that I scheduled an appt w/Dr.Harkins & saw him asap. After going back to Dr. Harkins I would never see anyone else for my TMJ. Dr. Harkins is Extremely Educated in his field.There is a huge difference in seeing someone as educated such as himself as opposed to seeing a General Dentist. I even found the fact that he went back to school to study Sleep Misc a huge asset. The information he gave me re: TMJ/TMD was not only helpful. It gave me a totally different perspective on having & treating TMJ beyond what I have ever experienced in the past & I believe this is definitely due to his additional knowledge on the disease. Dr. Harkins Is very Kind-Hearted, Understanding, Helpful & by far The Most Positive person Ive come accross in a long time.. I drive a Good 45 min -1 hr to see him & sometimes this drive makes it very hard to make my appts especially to make my appts on time. His staff is very Helpful as well. They are always very nice & go out of their way to help me schedule the most convenient appt for myself.I would recommend Dr. Harkins to anyone who has TMJ/TMD & is serious about going to a Dr. who makes his patients a Priority. I started coming to this office after dislocating my jaw due to nightly teeth grinding. Yeah, OUCH. Not only did Dr. Harkins and Dr. Maraflu fix my TMJ using nightguards (gotta love a simple, drug-free, surgery-free solution) but they are seriously some of the nicest doctors I've ever worked with. I visited here for a little over two years for my TMJ and I was satisfied every single time. I was assigned Dr. Meraflu and she was wonderful. Kind, professional, and sincere. She took the time to exaplin what TMJ is and how to improve it. The staff members were amazing as well. The ladies at the front desk were friendly and funny. The doctor's assistants were very hard-working and polite. My jaw has been feeling great, thanks to the teeth guard they custom-made more for me. He has been in practice for over 25 years and provides excellent care to all his patients. He does not "go by the clock"; he will spend as much time as you need.
