I cannot believe that it's come to this...but it needs to be said. This past Sunday I had the displeasure of eating an overpriced ($90), bland, atrocious looking cake that had no business being consumed by anyone. Stella's used to make my birthday cakes growing up; and while I wasn't fond of Napoleon, they were known for it. Well, not anymore. Not sure if they switched owners or lost the desire to make anything remotely tasty, but what on Earth happened?! The cake was stale, the fondant tasted like cheap candy, the sides were sunken so the middle had this odd protruding shape, the cream was tasteless, and it looked average at best. That's being generous. We were celebrating a special occasion only for it to be ruined by their vanilla cake. Everyone at the party looked confused. Like how did this happen? Who is baking? This is by far my favorite place to order cakes in the DMV. The cakes and fruit tarts are an ongoing staple for my family's birthdays/celebrations. We consistently order the mousse cakes for celebrations and fruit tarts for smaller functions or just as a random treat. Cakes can be preordered (3 days ahead of pickup) or purchased on-site; they offer a complimentary custom message on the cakes. For certain holidays, such as Mother's Day, they offer heart-shaped cakes which makes the cake even more special. Our favorite cake to order is the white and dark chocolate mousse cake. We hardly ever have leftovers because everyone gets seconds or thirds the cakes are light, subtly sweet and airy. To start out a nice young Lady waited on me the receipt said Mackenzie she was very nice. Picked up a "cement cake" for my daughters birthday. This cake was so dry and hard and turned out to be a major disappointment. I returned it the following day and got the third degree about it from multiple employees. They did finally credit the sale after a while. Not a word about how a birthday party was ruined or an apology just here's your credit slip. I am writing this to share some disappointing news regarding our recent purchases. My family and I have been loyal customers for decades, and we truly love their cakes and pies. However, we have noticed a recurring issue lately where about half of the cakes we buy are stale. While we stayed quiet initially because we value their business, this has now happened roughly 15 times. It has become especially upsetting during important moments; we had a stale cake for my uncle's 60th birthday, and again yesterday for a recovery celebration. We shopped at Stella's for years. We were very happy with their service up until last week. They made the wrong cake for our daughter's birthday party and they didn't accept their mistake. The manager didn't even listen what I was trying to say on the phone and she rudely hung up the phone. How can an employee who was taking the order does not know the difference between chocolate truffle and black/white cake? When we were picking up the order, they offered us 6 inch cake instead of 8 inch cake. The cake wasn't enough for our guests so we refused. It was an impromptu gathering and so we ordered slices which looked so scrumptious, I forgot to take a photo because...well, priorities. I have been going to this place for over 10 years and my wife's family has been going on for longer. Bakery is amazing! My favorite and mostly the only I get is their black and white cake. They do offer many other items and can accommodate most palettes. Inside is very small and if there is a line, you will stand outside . Love! I had heard of this bakery from someone else who lived nearby, but never knew it existed because it's around to the left side of the shopping plaza. I luckily had my first experience here today when they weren't busy--there is a queue rope that goes all of the way outside, so it looks like it can get insane. I wandered in (unaware of the rope line since no one was in it) and gazed at the cases and someone quickly helped me. I tried a box full of the Turkish hand pies and they were so flakey and delicious! They didn't make it home as I inhaled them in the car. I also had a Mille feuille that was to die for but uber messy. (Thankfully not inhaled in the car.) I also bought some mini fruit tarts and baklava. I recently heard of Stella's after my surprise birthday cake was ordered from here and wanted to share the magic that was made! My cake was the dark and white chocolate mousse cake, with a very smooth and even consistency! The ingredients, although were present in every bite, was not an overly rich texture and so you could taste the flavors evenly without feeling like you'd get diabetes in three business days. The icing was also quite light but tasty, also with a smooth consistency. Every slice effortlessly went through my fork and I was excited to keep eating the cake. I also noticed that the mousse, which was added within the cake as a layer, had a very light texture as well that complimented every bite--almost felt like I was eating an ice cream cake without the brain freeze! We ensured that the cake was refrigerated and so with further slices we had the next day, the consistency and flavor remained intact. If this bakery was close to me, I would have a serious addiction! My family frequently comes here for our Sunday dinners and special occasions. I love to make trips here for their macarons. They are only $1.75 so its makes it even better. I had one of my Birthday cakes made here. Its recommended to place an order a head of time,.especially with COVID. My cake was delicious small chocolate cake. Which did not last very long and now I wished it was a little bigger. My cake was just perfect the icing itself was delectable. The cake part was moist and with plenty of flavor packed inside. They have bakery inside with plenty of goodies. However, its best to get here early, or place a special order. My family loves to order the Challah bread for special holidays and their fruit tarts for desserts. Both are a must haves if you come here. Plan to wait especially during the pandemic. This is still one of my favorite places to frequent. It is also my go to place for cake. I have never been disappointed by the cakes or desserts here. I have been coming here for a very long time. I think around 20 years now. Maybe more. I still remember myself as a child getting the fruit cake for my birthday. My parents always mention this place for cake and it has always stuck with me. The only downside is the small parking lot - like really tight to maneuver and may be detrimental to your car if you are not careful with the hill and bumps. The store itself is quite small. The demand for their cakes are high though and you can see it through how many people come here at any time as well as how many people work here in such a small shop. During the pandemic, they only allow two people to come in to buy at a time while others wait outside to go in. Not bad when it isn't that busy, but could be a nightmare if it rains and you are going at a time everyone is going. The desserts is the reason I love this place. The US is just super sweet. The cakes from other establishments are just filled with overly sweet frosting. However, this place finds that balance of enjoyable natural flavors and is not heavily dependent on sugar. This makes eating large quantities still enjoyable. I remember buying a Costco cake and the frosting was just so sweet I had to scrape the frosting off. I could not eat more than a couple of slices because of the sugar content. The creme inside the cake is truly delicious here. Most of their cakes use the same ingredients and formulas so don't stress over which flavor to get. They don't deviate that much. The macaroons, I think, are better than some of the dedicated macaroon places. The day I came here I bought a whole set. They were fresh, soft and gooey in the middle. The flavors were a bit dim as I couldn't guess the flavors in each of the macaroons, but the taste was there. I believe it is a family run business, since I always see the same gentleman there overseeing the bakery. You can see that every pastry and cake is made with absolute pride. What an amazing bakery. I've tried a lot of bakeries around the DMV and this is my favorite for cakes, pastries and macarons. Their chocolate mousse cake is sublime, as is their Grand Marnier cake. I need to try the Black Forest cake. Any of their pies is outstanding; they are neat with a delicious crust. Their custard fruit tart has a chocolate coating on the base, a crunchy shell, and is my personal favorite. I haven't bought much bread from them...I get those at a couple other bakeries...but I have tried some special breads they've featured. read more

I am surprised to read so many good reviews about this bakery. If you think that cakes sold at Stella bakery are good, it means that you never had a good cake in your life. Mine ended up in my backyard in the compost corner and not even fauna is touching it. European bakery? Being Italian I can tell you that this place is very far from making European sweets; not even close. $40 for an 8" cake makes it also be very expensive for the quality you receive. You can buy better at a vending machine already individually wrapped and avoid meeting rude customer service. I would assess less than zero points for this place. Yes! Stella's has got it going on. If you're reading this review wondering if you should stop in- you should. You don't need to read anymore of the review! However; if you're still reading I'll tell you why we are in love with Stella's. We stopped in on a Saturday around 11am and the place had been open for a couple hours already. Everything was in stock and there were A LOT of choices. It should be noted there are four food cases but after you're done looking you should go to the register to the left when you walk in. Here you'll place your order for all things pastries. We ordered 2 regular croissants, a chocolate croissant, mini leak and potato pie, mini cheese pie, and a slice of the dark chocolate white chocolate mousse cake. The grand total? $9! That was an insane dream because all of the local shops are selling croissants for $3.50 each. The croissants were large and in charge. Super flakey and buttery as always. The chocolate croissant is always a great way to start the day. The mini pies were awesome, if I had to pick one I would get the potato leak one again.... but at less than $1 you might as well try them all. The chocolate(s) mousse cake tasted on point. The white chocolate was more intense than the dark chocolate and I didn't mind it at all. Long story short we are huge fans of Stella's and can't wait to return. I do wish the prices were displayed but since everything is so cheap I didn't mind not knowing until the end. I'm looking forward to returning and trying everything else. This year, instead of making my own Bûche de Noël, we decided to order one, and I am so glad we did. The Bûche was so light and moist, and the flavor was spectacular. As easy and delicious as it is to make a Bûche at home, I see no reason to anymore when we can buy one this great one just miles away. Can't wait to buy another one next year! The staff was helpful and accommodating when we called just days before, and had one ready for us at the time of pick up. We froze ours a day prior so that it would stay fresh for Christmas but I'm not even sure if that was necessary, that's how great it was. Thanks for making our Christmas extra special. read more
