If you're looking for a used car seller to refute negative stereotypes about used car sellers, you should skip Stellar Auto. They engage in unfair business practices. Before going to Stellar in person, I had looked for weeks online for the model with the options I wanted. I found it at Stellar. I pulled the Carfax and AutoCheck reports, which were positive. Stellar had had the car for several weeks and had been dropping the price regularly. When the price finally dropped into the reasonable zone, I went to Burbank with my checkbook. Even though I wasn't financing the car, it took nearly 90 minutes for Stellar to write up the paperwork. While I was waiting for the paperwork, an employee made a comment in passing that Stellar's insurance company "required" them to include theft deterent devices on all vehicles. He made no mention that the "device" was actually being sold to me along with the car. When he finally told me the total for the check, the amount was higher than I expected. I asked to see the breakdown. For the first time, I discovered that I was being charged $600 for an insurance policy from Gold Standard. The policy is for 60 months and only pays if the vehicle is stolen, plus it only pays the deductible that my regular policy will not cover. The chances of this policy ever having to pay out anything is pretty much nonexistent. And even if the car is stolen, my deductible is only $500. So paying $600 to cover a $500 deductible is stupid. I immediately objected to being charged for that worthless policy. I was told, "You have no choice, that's just how we do things." I said I thought it was a sleazy practice to slip that in, and they needed to include the "policy" in the "no haggle" purchase price. The employee just shrugged his shoulders and said, "do you want the car or not?" Because the specific car had been difficult to locate, I went forward with the purchase, but I made it clear I was unhappy with this underhanded tactic. As I went through the paperwork, I was asked to sign several documents saying that I understood that the Gold Standard anti-theft policy/device was "not required" to obtain financing, nor otherwise required as a condition of the sale. Of course, this was a lie. I was clearly told that if I wanted the car, I had to pay $600 for Gold Standard. So I crossed out those statements and wrote that the I had been told I had no choice, and the Gold Standard charge was required. Clearly, the staff didn't care as long as I paid. Although it took nearly 2 hours to complete the paperwork, Stellar didn't bother to detail the car while I waited. One of the employees lied to me and said they had "just got it in" (the car had been listed on their website for weeks) and hadn't had time to detail it. The prior owner's candy wrappers were still in the console storage compartment. Bottom line, the car (and CarFax, AutoCheck reports) sold itself. I bought it in spite of Stellar, not because of them and their sleazy price padding nonsense. read more
