I have been to Stella's a number of times and for the most part have been very happy with the results. We went again last night and had a great waitress (Liz). I usually order the Gumbo as an appetizer and add Andouille sausage. Sometimes when I get the gumbo it is a lite tan color and other times like last night is is the dark brown rich color that Gumbo is supposed to be. In my opinion the darker the color the more flavorful it is. It had that Cajun bite. Congratulations to the person responsible. It made my evening. This is one of my FAVORITE places to eat in Eau Claire. It is such an interesting atmosphere to be in as long as you pay no mind to the alligator (crocodile?) hanging from the ceiling. You have to try the cornbread. I love the Texas Heat Mac & Cheese. It is kind of a gamble as far as the wait-staff goes. Sometimes its really, really good. This was our third time to Stella Blues in the past few years. Although we have liked it in the past this trip was mixed. We started with iced tea and it was awful. The server said it came from a box as a concentrate. That might be reason enough, but it tasted old as well. At least they have a pretty decent beer menu to find a good beer to replace the tea. I had the Bourbon Scallops and was concerned that the sauce would overwhelm the scallops. For that reason I contemplated the less expensive shrimp instead but did settle on the scallops. It was quite good; decent sauce and decent scallops. However the steamed vegetables were served on the same plate with the scallops and rice. Since they were steamed and drenched in water the whole meal mixed into one covered with a watered down sauce. Which meant it was all equally sweet. It would have been much better to plate the scallops (with the bacon bits on top) together with the rice (which was pretty bland) and put the veggies on the side in a small bowl. I added cornbread, which I recall liking in the past but it was way too sugary, particularly with the bourbon sauce soaked meal. We also had Crab Cakes. Our thought was that good crab cakes are pan fried. These were batter covered and deep fried, which is not unheard of. Although we were lead to believe that they were "home made" we suspect they were frozen packaged cakes. They would qualify as good bar food but not great restaurant fare. Adding the Tuscan Salad did not help. Take the NYT Tuscan Kale Salad recipe, remove the spices and garlic and you have this: A rather boring salad. It is a pleasant enough place to sit. The outside patio was popular too. B.B. King's Bluesville on XM Radio makes for a nice blues atmosphere for a roadhouse. But the prices are really more high end than they should be for an Eau Claire bar and eatery. Also the service in the past has been adequate. This trip the service was very mediocre. But as we left more waitstaff were coming in the door. They should have been there earlier. read more

The food: Wow! We had corn bread, jambalaya, gumbo and scallops. Everything was EXCELLENT. I would highly recommend, just for the food alone. Since most of you are probably like me, it's more than just the food - it's about the experience - so read on.... Three stars instead of 5: We had a bizarre experience with the service. It was not terribly busy on a Thursday Evening around 7:30. When we came in to the restaurant, we were not greeted. We were not sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait. Eventually, a white haired lady (possibly Stella?) sauntered over to us but didn't say anything. I had to ask if we could be seated and she said "I don't work here, but I will find some place for you". I thought she was "just having fun", so we played along. We asked if there was any outdoor seating available. She took a look and said there was not. So, instead of seating us in the bright, streetside tables in the front of the house, she took us into a dark back room and seated us at a table next to a window. She then proceeded to open the shade and remarked that we can see outside. All we could see were garbage cans! What's more bizarre, is that as we were sitting, I noticed that an outside table had been vacated. I asked her if we could take that table. She told me she would have to check to see if there was a "waiting list" for the outside seating. She came back and said that there was, so we would have to sit here. Soon after we were seated, another table opened up (we had a CLEAR view of the outdoor seating). As we progressed through our dinner, the tables outside were never seated. By the time we left, all but one table was empty outside. So, I'm not sure if she was drunk, or didn't like us, or WHAT, but it partly ruined the experience. I just don't understand what she was thinking? If we asked for an outdoor table, and there was one available, why NOT let us sit there? Bottom line: Food was GREAT. Service, not so much. read more

I find myself here about once a year, and every time I am reminded of why I don't like it. First of all, it is loud. The acoustics are so terrible you have to shout to your table mates, so any kind of decent conversation is impossible. The food is mediocre. I have only sent back food twice in my life and once was here. It probably should have gone back last night too. No one at our table thought their food was very good. (And we waited over an hour to get it). I think this visit shall be my last no matter who says they are headed there! read more

Their website claims to be the best Cajun American food... I was told by the waiter the Etoufee was the most classic Cajun dish. It was Creole.... most Cajun -American restaurant I know make this mistake. Cajun and Creole, very different. Food was ok, heavy on the Celery, and no bread on the side to wipe up the "gravy." Not worth the money in my book. Over priced. Yes, there was crawfish, but it had very little flavor. Not impressed. read more

Great atmosphere and some awesome beers on tap. Came here twice for dinner and sat at the bar. Both times the service was VERY VERY slow. The barmaid was kind of apathetic. Stella's used to be our favorite place to dine. Not so much lately. The last 4 visits have not been good. Not sure if they changed cooks or vendors but my once favorite meals are not worth the price any more. I just visited Stella Blues for the second time. I get there once every summer. Last summer I had a great meal worthy of 5 stars. This year the drinks and food were lacking. The Mojito tasted like sugary lemonade and the scallops were average at best. Others in my group has the dried chicken which was good. In town visiting family. First impression was favorable, we were met by friendly staff that were very quick to get our drinks and orders. Then the food came, a major disappointment - the BBQ Ribs. When buying a premium item, I have certain expectations and these missed by a mile. They were COLD, fatty, dry, and tough. Come on. I will give it two stars for the beer list. My chicken sandwich was pink and still frozen in the middle. Thank God I cut it in half before taking a bite. I returned it the kitchen. It wasn't terrible once it was cooked. I did find it amusing that they call themselves a creole restaurant. There is no real Creole food on the entire menu. Went there on a Friday night with a goup of friends and all of us were very dissapointed in our food. There were eight in our group, so there was plenty of diverse opinions to be had. I had the pulled pork sandwich which was barely warm upon arrival and the meat smelled as though it had been re-heated from the day before. I also had the dirty rice which tasted like Uncle Bens. The rest of my groups food was all barely warm and all said, it was just okay. I was personally dissapointed because I had been looking forward to eating here. This was a wonderful treat in Eau Claire. I had the jambalaya which was a substantial portion and made with lots of veggies including broccoli and cauliflower, yellow summer squash and also three kinds of meat: andouille sausage, crawfish, and shrimp. This place needs help. To start things off, I'm greeted by someone behind the bar who seems to have never spoken to a human being before, forget the social skills required for bartending, or even greeting a stranger who walks into a restaurant. After an incredibly awkward exchange I finally get a beer and a dinner order placed. Their beer list is very good, I have to give them that. Also, someone with some social skills did end up taking over behind the bar. I ordered their New York strip steak which was $29. I ordered it medium, it came raw. Raw, and completely unseasoned. Also, the side of vegetables were steamed. There isn't anything inherently wrong with this until you see that a good portion of the vegetables are actually red onions. Steamed red onions. They were basically raw, and I can still taste them. I sent the steak back and they put it back on the grill. It returned to me on the rare side of medium rare at best, but at least it was edible. Simply put their menu and pricing would suggest an establishment that would easily have the ability to execute a simple meal. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. read more

Stella's USED to be my most favorite restraunt... now, ehhhhhh. The service has always been horrible! One day they say they don't take reservations, the next day we show up and the waitress says, "Well, it would have been nice if you had made a reservation" and rolls her eyes. We've also asked for a table and then been asked by the manager "how long we plan on staying"... HORRIBLE. But I've always over looked it because of a few key meals. 1) Wild Veggie Pasta - NIXED off the menu (even when I was 9 mo pregnant the waitress refused to ask the chef if he could even try making it); 2) Bananas Foster - last time I went we ordered it only to have the server come back 20 minutes later and tell us "they were unable to locate the bananas" (good thing there is a convenience store up the block, huh?); 3) the sweet potato fries - now they are obviously frozen/prepackaged/mass produced instead of the fresh yumminess they used to be; and last but most definitely not least - the fried pickles! Mind blowing! Except NOW they too are different (instead of crispy/panko they are prepackaged/frozen and bland). The drinks are great but I can get a better drink somewhere else. Their website welcomes feedback, but the mailbox is always full. Poor excuse for what used to be amazing. I mourn for you Stella's. read more
