Walking in we were thinking it was going to be a new place to add to our places to go. Service was great. I had the rosemary chicken sandwich and was happy with that. My girlfriend had the crab cake sandwich. This is where it all starts going downhill. We've never had a fishy tasting crab cake. It wasn't good at all. I would pass on that for sure. We also ordered onion rings and fries to go along with our meal. Of course this is extra. When did onions and potatoes become a high price add on item? There is a long, hefty beer and booze offering. However, $6 tap beer? We each had two. In the end we paid $56 for two sandwiches and four beers. Yikes. This is Eau Claire, not Chicago. It's in a sketchy part of town which suggests they got a deal on the property. All in all, it was disappointing. It didn't make in on the list of places to frequent. I actually created a Yelp account just to let everyone know how wonderful my meal was at Stella Blues. I had the Pasta Rockefeller. It comes with a chicken, shrimp or sausage option. I chose sausage. It was delicious. The best pasta dish I've ever had. The atmosphere and decor had a hip-antique vibe. The wait staff was incredibly friendly, patient and sincere. Definately worth the stop, even if it might be out of your way. I can't wait to go back and devour/enjoy another entreé. read more

Details: I ordered the Catfish with Cajun fries. I mean it was Catfish Monday after all, how could I not?. Couldn't decide on whether or not to get the fried catfish or the Cajun blackened, so I ordered one of each. Both were excellent, but I preferred the Cajun. I also ordered the Beer Battered Pickle Slices as an appetizer. Again, they were excellent. I actually had to push the plate away from me so I would stop eating them. Not being familiar with WI micro-brews, I ordered a Dogfish Head 60 minute. Then I asked the waitress if they did sample sizes so I could try some of the local selection. She replied, "No, we don't, I'm sorry." Well, she must have seen the sad puppy face I made because she then poured me 3 small glasses of the local beers from Three Floyds, Sand Creek, and Bell's Breweries and I was all smiles. Sadly disappointed. I've been here before and the last time we ordered some of the pastas which were wonderful. I thought this time around it would be the same, but unfortunately the service and the food fell flat. Our drinks were great as well as our appetizer, but my blackened catfish, one of the nightly specials, was basically burnt. And yes, I have had blacked fish before and it's one of my favorite ways of cooking fish. This had an over powering burnt charcoal flavor and the seasoning could not be tasted. The table next to me and my fiancé also had the blackened catfish and they also complained about how burnt it was. Our waiter offered to place a new order for me and I chose the fried catfish instead, which actually was great, although they only have me one piece when there was supposed to be two. My fiancé ordered one of the specialty burgers that had a beer cheese sauce on it and sadly the sauce was clumpy, gritty and there was just too much of it. Maybe they were just having an off night, but it really did not compare to the last time we were here. Me and my girlfriend went there today I ordered the blackened tuna she had the pepper shrimp the tuna had a discussing flavor so I politely told them I didn't like it the manager didn't say sorry or apologize. She responded with "what do you mean it has a bad taste? That's sushi grade tuna." They didn't refund my money or replace the dish with something different. Second time here. Friday seems to be a bit tougher for them than the Tuesday I did before. The beet salad was awash in a pool of water. And my spouse's portobello burger was a bit blander than one would hope in a cajun place. Server was very nice, but we could tell they were stretching her too thin for the crowds there. Still, I enjoyed the creole shrimp a bunch, and the child really liked her chicken tender (and my nibble in it suggests she was right on). Yes I have adjusted my ratings for eu claire. Still can't bring myself to give this place over 3 stars. The blackened catfish I ordered was semi inedible. It was clearly recently defrosted and had an odd charred burnt taste,not the great crisp spicy taste you'd expect form this dish. I was starving after a long shift so I was almost forced to scarf it down and quickly make my exit from this restaurant. The ambiance isn't horrible, but hopefully my N of 1 was just a bad sample of what they had on their menu. Maybe I'll have to give it another shot next time I'm in town, but when you're deciding where to go have dinner in sub 0 temperature, you better choose wisely, exploring the local dining scene can be very uncomfortable when you need to spend 30 min just getting the ice to defrost off your windshield. read more

I've had a variety of dishes at Stella's-- unfortunately, at times the food is rather inconsistent.... Case in point: the Bourbon scallops. I've had them nicely seared and cooked to perfection-- then a month later they are seemingly steamed and beyond over cooked. Wow. Such delicious food. Everything you order is out of this world, especially the banana bread dessert, and I usually hate dessert. Wow wow wow. The martini list is vast; my favorite: the 007. Tasty food and drinks. Tonight, we had the Mona Margarita and the Wicked [something] (a sweeter cranberry drink). Great food AND drink variety. I had the grouper (with a slightly creamy salsa sauce) with polenta and steamed vegetables; just the right amount of spicy. She had the Crabby (burger-sized crab cake) BLT. I tried it - yum. Don't miss the sweet potato fries with a little Cajun mayo. Didn't get dessert this time, but we recommend the bananas foster. Very nice place. Some may think it's a bit pricey, but you're going to experience great food and drinks, great service, and a unique atmosphere. Decided to visit the Alma mater and made a stop here, which I was too cheap to do during undergrad. Guess I wasn't missing much! To start with the good - the spicy mac was really tasty. Here ends the list of positives. The bad - The service was slowwww and remarkably inattentive. Forgivable if the place was busy, but it was not. Biggest disappointment - the BBQ Ribs. When buying a premium item, I have certain expectations and these missed by a mile. They were fatty, dry, and tough. Come on. Went with a party of 9 on a Friday night and glad we made reservations. Very crowded and a touch loud but good vibe and atmosphere. Great drink menu with lots of options. Our waitress/server did a great job taking care of us on a busy night. Bourbon pasta had a kick and was excellent as was the corn bread, salmon salad, volcanic pork shank, and my favorite fried portobello mushroom sandwich. This was our third time to Stella Blues in the past few years. Although we have liked it in the past this trip was mixed. We started with iced tea and it was awful. The server said it came from a box as a concentrate. That might be reason enough, but it tasted old as well. At least they have a pretty decent beer menu to find a good beer to replace the tea. I had the Bourbon Scallops and was concerned that the sauce would overwhelm the scallops. For that reason I contemplated the less expensive shrimp instead but did settle on the scallops. It was quite good; decent sauce and decent scallops. However the steamed vegetables were served on the same plate with the scallops and rice. Since they were steamed and drenched in water the whole meal mixed into one covered with a watered down sauce. Which meant it was all equally sweet. It would have been much better to plate the scallops (with the bacon bits on top) together with the rice (which was pretty bland) and put the veggies on the side in a small bowl. I added cornbread, which I recall liking in the past but it was way too sugary, particularly with the bourbon sauce soaked meal. We also had Crab Cakes. Our thought was that good crab cakes are pan fried. These were batter covered and deep fried, which is not unheard of. Although we were lead to believe that they were "home made" we suspect they were frozen packaged cakes. They would qualify as good bar food but not great restaurant fare. Adding the Tuscan Salad did not help. Take the NYT Tuscan Kale Salad recipe, remove the spices and garlic and you have this: A rather boring salad. It is a pleasant enough place to sit. The outside patio was popular too. B.B. King's Bluesville on XM Radio makes for a nice blues atmosphere for a roadhouse. But the prices are really more high end than they should be for an Eau Claire bar and eatery. Also the service in the past has been adequate. This trip the service was very mediocre. But as we left more waitstaff were coming in the door. They should have been there earlier. read more

This place is the incarnation of bipolar mediocrity: it does some things well and others poorly, with nothing really in between. I would have given it three stars, but the prices are far greater than what the actual quality would deserve (seriously, if dinner and drinks for two has a $75 tab in Eau Claire, I expect a decent level of execution). The good: Our server was pleasant and friendly and very willing to answer our questions, make suggestions, and otherwise provide good service. She gets an A+ from me. My girlfriend ordered a martini from their cocktail menu and loved it. I ordered the gumbo for dinner and was surprised at the flavor depth and overall taste--it wasn't the absolute best I've had, but it was delicious and filling. The bad: For a venue boasting a huge cocktail selection, I found it odd that there are absolutely zero whiskey or cognac-based options (though I suppose I discovered why shortly thereafter). Wanting something from that space, I ordered a Manhattan. I received bourbon on the rocks with a dash of bitters on their first attempt. The second attempt was the same thing, except with a splash of vermouth and cherries as a garnish (I know that places do variations on the cocktail, but I've never seen something like this before). My girlfriend ordered the Bourbon-glazed Bacon Scallops and received an unremarkable savory-sweet sauce with steamed vegetables served raw. In short, I'd probably go to this place for lunch, apps, and/or beers. Everything else is at risk of being overpriced and underdelivered. read more
