Have you ever heard of Navajo fry bread? Basically, it's a really simple mix of flour, sugar, salt and lard that's deep-fried and topped with all manner of sweet and/or savory ingredients. Created around 1864 by the Navajo people using the meager ingredients given to them by the US Government at the time. The bread quickly spread to other tribes throughout the country, and is usually just referred to as "fry bread," but in AZ it's always preceded by the prefix "Navajo." My first encounter with it was in a church parking lot at San Xavier del Bac (aka The White Dove of the Desert), where Native Americans had food stands selling fresh fry bread topped with honey and cinnamon-sugar, as well as savoury toppings like ground beef, lettuce and tomatoes in what's popularly referred to as a Navajo Taco. Fast forward to our recent trip to Page, and we stopped into a little restaurant called Steer 89. It came recommended by a local⁠--and I always take local recs seriously. While perusing the menu they had an item called a Navajo Burger ($15) and my curiosity was piqued. Essentially it's a giant hamburger sandwiched between two fry bread "buns," and I really have to say it was easily the most unique thing I've had all year. The burger itself was terrific, as it was seasoned well, had good beefy flavor and cooked expertly. And it was "run through the garden" with all the veggie accoutrements I demand. The hand-cut fries were also a treasure to behold and were everything a fry should be: fluffy, yet crisp and just a bit overly-salted. Of course, we had to get a Navajo Taco ($12), as well, and it too lived up to the hype of the originals I'd had in that church parking lot. While it was nothing fancy, this was probably one of my favorite meals we had on our recent trip and definitely worthy of multiple repeat visits next time we're in the area. read more

My friend and I came here and we mostly came for the Navajo Tacos. I also ordered the burger, but that was a mistake as that was not all that good at all, and was much smaller and more depressing looking compared to the Navajo taco. The navajo taco is basically a piece of the navajo bread, which is a thicker, chewier, airier flatbread topped with taco toppings you'd expect from a taco bell, things like shredded lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, onions and chili. The navajo taco was pretty good if you came in expecting that. It is pretty much an american taco with navajo bread. Overall not an interesting find, but nothing too spectacular or mind blowing. read more

As others have mentioned, it is rather dated-decor and dimly lit inside. Salad bar was basic; but, stocked well and appearing clean/tidy. Staff was pleasant and friendly. Draft beer selections were adequate. Had one of their steaks, porter-house. Seasoned nicely; however, a bit too grislty for what you pay. I will go back and try their Navajo Burger (served with fry bread in lieu of a traditional bun). Page has many restaurants; but, very hit or miss. Steer 89 does seem to be towards the top of the local food-chain. read more

We visited Steer 89 two times during our stop in Page. Our first visit was for lunch and was just fine - we tried the Navajo taco (which was quite tasty) and the service was attentive and friendly. I had a draft sitting at 4 stars after that experience. Our second experience was for dinner a day later. The restaurant was maybe 20-25% full. While we were greeted quickly, we couldn't be seated until "the servers got their orders in the system and caught up." This was a bit strange to us, but not a big deal. About ten minutes in, we were seated in a populated area of the restaurant. The gentleman who seated us asked what we wanted to drink and said a server would be with us shortly. Fast-forward maybe 15 minutes and a server stops by, asks if anyone has helped us yet, acts surprised no one has, and says someone will be by shortly. After this brief, but pleasant interaction, I looked at the time on my phone and gave them 5 more minutes. Once those past, my wife and I promptly walked out of the restaurant. On our way out, no one said anything to us or acknowledged had taken place. I'm generally not an impatient person, but given how empty the restaurant was and the fact that we saw at least three servers running around, I found it unacceptable that we were basically forgotten despite sitting in the middle of the busiest area of the restaurant. Based on our second experience, I can't really recommend Steer 89 anymore. It seems like their food is decent, but they need to improve/streamline their process and not ignore seated guests when the restaurant isn't busy. read more

A fairly new place. Seems popular with the tourists since the only other patrons were a group of tourists. Parking was a bit strange as we parked on a dirt section right off the road. Didn't seem to be too much space for others. Anyway, plenty of seating when we got in. We were told by our Lower Antelope Canyon tour guide to try a Navajo Taco, but the first place, seemingly most popular place, that popped up was closed (only open one hour...), so we found this one as a backup. The server was great and he attended to our order and other needs quickly. Had simple recommendations and they were good ones. The Navajo Taco was delicious and very filling. The fry bread made it awesome too. I do want to try the opened only one hour in a day place, but if that's closed, I would highly recommend Steer 89. Seemed like a pretty new restaurant, dropped by after touring the canyons in the area. We were searching to try out a Navajo taco, as the fry bread apparently is only in Navajo territories. It was delicious and fully. I would drop by for it again if I were in the area. There were plenty of tables, and looked like lots of space in the back for events. The bathrooms were towards the center of the restaurant and were single occupancy for the cowgirls-- would definitely have a line in an event. Our orders were: Porterhouse, Ribeye, salad bars, soup, Mac and cheese kids, chili, and fry bread. Salad bar was fresh with basic topping options and dressings, although they were out of ranch and blue cheese on the bar but when asked for some they put it out right away. Porterhouse was supposed to be 16 oz, maybe it was, but it was super thin but it was tender and had good seasoning. The ribeye was nice and thick, cooked perfectly medium rare and very tasty. The kid lapped up the Mac and cheese and wanted more. The fry bread was good, especially with honey. We are from out of town and staying at the hotel next store and decided to give it a go. We wanted a good steak place for our Anniversary dinner. We had a really good experience here. The special was prime rib. It was really good and nice sized. The special also came with veggies, potato and soup and salad. We also decided to try the najavo bread and it was delicious. Our waitress was super. She made us feel welcomed even tho we weren't locals. The service was great. Whenever we are in Page again we will definitely eat here. Great customer service and atmosphere. Lyle at the bar was awesome and the reason for an extra star. they have a few local beers on tap, but we only came here for the Navajo taco and weren't disappointed. It's big enough to share as an appetizer or split in two for dinner. It's basically Navajo fry bread topped with mild beef and beef chili, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and red onions. It came with sides of sour cream and Pace salsa. There are few places in town to find Navajo taco and I thought for the excellent service and small bite, this was a good choice for dinner. read more

Attracted by website claim of serving prime beef, we visited for dinner. Meats 5*: The ribeye steak indeed was tender, and cooked well. The philly cheese steak is among the best we have ever had: the meat was tender, well seasoned, and came with au jus. The fries were crispy, not too thick and not too thin. The chicken tender was pretty standard, but you could change for seasoned curly fries which were crunchy, tasty, and plentiful. The salad bar was fresh. The water was frequently replenished. I particularly was curious about and tried the Navajo taco. I've never had one, and am not sure how it's supposed to taste, so, from someone from the east coast: the portion was literally huge, and it tasted like taco topping (slow cooked meat and beans topped with salsa, cheese, guacamole) on top of fried somewhat bland dough that got soggy underneath the weight of the topping. 3* Navajo taco for me. 4* seating. One word. Gross. We didn't have a choice. It's where our tour brought us to eat our sandwich with a salad. ONE TRIP to a rinky dink salad bar and pile high because there are no do-overs. They are used to cattling people through so the service is sterile and the food is gross. I would have preferred a boxed sandwich from Subway. SERIOUSLY. Bad bread from a store bag, very salty supermarket pre-packaged cold cuts. I like dives. This is not one I would have chosen on my own. Amber is completely worthless. I came in to eat at 8 to eat and they said they are closed even though they don't close till 9:30pm! I ask why to the hostess I just want a Navajo Taco and I've had a rough day I'm in town passing through and the hostess says nothing. Extremely fast and friendly service the steaks seem a bit overpriced I did not buy one I just had the salad bar which was awesome for 8.99 my son had the club sandwich and fries it didn't come with any mayonnaise but he asked for some and they brought it right out they been open for 2 months now it was a previous restaurant before they took it over. read more

Excellent place with unique menu!! We walked in after our hike around the area on 03/22/2020. We were expecting a diner food menu...however total suprise with a korean /asian twist menu. Katzu sandwich and korean bbq noodle bowl was excellent !!! Generous portions! Dessert was wow! Huge piece of chocolate cake with coconut flakes was. We are from out of town and tried to get a nice meal but the restaurant Is very old and is in desperate need of a remodel, looks like they got the steaks from the Walmart because they are paper thin and threw it on the grill, slow service barley any servers and wait staff. We were seated for 13 minutes and was never waited on. They were not busy, as there were only 5 tables (counting us) that were there, two of which already had their food, and i saw at least 3 waitresses. We made reservations for Father's Day. Definitely didn't need them. When we walked in we were wary of the food quality just by the interior. But wow we were amazed how good the service was, always refilled our drinks, and the salad bar was fully stocked. The food was spectacular. We each got something different. Not a bad place. I came here with family 45min prior to closing time for dinner. Family got steak and salmon dishes and they seemed to like what they ordered! It's a much more mellow bar/steakhouse, not too loud. They play country music in the background and the workers are nice. It's a cute place. Service seemed to be a bit slower than what I'm used to but that was OK since it wasn't like we had anywhere to go after. I was misled to think they had vegetarian options. I asked the lady when we came in whether they had any veg options and she listed two items - Navajo tacos and their chili, so I was happy going in. The chili dish they listed beef so I skipped it. The Navajo taco listed their "homemade beans" and I didn't see any meat listed so I ordered it, but please note this means their homemade beans has beans AND meat (I think it's ground beef?). I didn't ask twice which was my mistake when I ordered it. They did have a salad bar I probably would've been better off with. I did no research prior to coming. It was recommended by our tour guide and Steer 89 is owned and operated by Natives so I wanted to support and try out their taco.
