I was visiting Springfield for an interview, so a friend said I had to stop by Steak N Shake. This was my first Steak N Shake experience, so I was excited. It's a cute place, reminds me of an old school diner. We decided to order take-out so we approached the counter. I wasn't sure what I wanted to order but the hostess and chef were very helpful in helping me decide. Since it was my first time I settled on a single steak burger with fries. The burger was good and the fries were too. My order ws pretty cheap too. About $4.00. Can't beat that. All in all a good expereicne: Good burger, great customer service. OK, I might be a little liberal with this 5 star rating, but this place is a genuine slice of Americana, with great diner style fare. It's blinking lights drew us in from our hotel across the street. Since I grew up in the town where this chain got it's start, we had to eat there! I had the guacamole steak burger with a cup of chili. Both were yummy. Hubby had the steak burger with bacon & horseradish which was delicious. His chocolate shake (almost too thick for the straw) was "wonderful." Our son had a double steak burger with cheesy fries, which he demolished! All in all an excellent Midwest drive-in eating experience. Service was top-notch too, our server was very attentive. The floors were filthy. Our waitress said "they're supposed to clean the floors in the middle of the night but I doubt they do" The tile stained there were straw wrappers and dirty napkins and hairs all over the place. My family and I got up and left. read more

This member of the former Route 66 route just got nominated for the Historical Locations Menu. I also just stopped in for a double and cheese over the weekend while I was working a trade show down the street. As almost any time you stop by this location it was filled to the walls with people stopping in for a quick bite. But as usual, a quick to-go burger and fries isn't a tall order. Always made fresh to go, a hot double cheese and fries is just around the corner. I like Steak N Shake it is always a great place to go if you just want to know for sure that you will get a good meal and a good price. I had a cup of veggie soup that was amazing and no dairy in it which is always a plus. My mom and I split the 3 sliders and she had a hot fudge sundae.. Our waitress was fast and friendly and kept the sweet teas coming and even brought us to go cups. The atmosphere was like steeping back into the 1950's with the pictures the decor and the old guys sitting behind us telling the waitress they had been coming there since the place open 50+ years ago and they were trading model trains, they just made the atmosphere even better. read more

What would you expect from a greasy spoon that has consistently good food? Well, I'd say you'd expect consistently good food. I've never had any food from Steak 'n Shake that I sent back, save one time when I ordered a chili starter, and they brought my burger and fries way too soon. By the time I ate my chili, my fries were cold. Of course, the restaurant made it right by bringing me a fresh order of their shoestring French fries. I think my favorite part of eating at Steak 'n Shake has to be the old diner feel you get by its ambiance. Being close to MSU, Drury and OTC, it's in a perfect location to be a hangout for college students. They just did a remodel of their dining room, fixing horrible cracks and other issues with their floor, and redoing some of the bench seats on the booths, plus upgrading the surface of the bar, using stainless steel sheeting instead of wood. Steak 'n Shake has grown their menu a lot over the years. Personally, I feel they have too many options, but hey, if it works for them and people like it, good for them. They advertise that every "meal" costs under $4.00. Today, I ordered a triple burger meal with fries, and added a bowl of chili (their chili is the best I've ever eaten), plus a double malted chocolate shake (it was during their "happy hour" so it was half price) and coffee when I was done with the shake. I had expect to receive a bill for around $15.00 to $17.00, but was pleasantly surprised that the ticket was only for just over $10. It was worth every penny, and the service was excellent. This specific location has a personal appeal to me, as it was the first place that my dad and I ate when we came to Springfield when we were looking for the home we were going to move into when we moved from Illinois to Missouri. It was an experience that my dad and I got to share alone together, and I still cherish having that time with him. He's still with us, so every now and then, I take him there for breakfast or lunch. The only complaint I have about the store is their rest rooms. They are either way too hot or extremely cold. Further, at least the men's room (I can't speak for the ladies room), smells horrible of urine that's not been mopped and has seeped into the grout and tiles. It really makes for an unpleasant visit, so if you've gotta go, be prepared. That's the only negative I have for them. Please, give them a try. They are open 24 hours a day. read more

The fries are frustratingly small both in cut and portion and the burgers aren't great, but for what you're paying, they're better than McDonald's and Burger King, and the staff are super friendly! read more

The staff was rude and unorderly. They argued with the managment and customers! I used to come here all the time. Never again.

I love coming here when I'm drunk and need something cheap and fast because I spent all my money downtown. The service is always great. Wait staff are really nice and friendly. This was our first Steak 'n Shake experience we loved the old school restaurant as it reminded us more of a diner than just general takeout. Waitress was friendly and meals served promptly. I had the classic burger with seasoned fries, I wasn't a fan of the Parmesan seasoning however the burger with all the trimmings was delish. This is the steak and shake I go to more often than the others. They need to clean more- and better- but they are almost always packed, so it gets difficult. They've never gotten my order wrong but some of the new policies are really ridiculous- I always order a cup of frisco sauce to dip my burger in, and I don't know how they expect me to do that with a cup the size of- no joke- a thimble. You can barely get the shoestring fries in there. And upping the quality of ingredients- especially in the ice cream- would go a very long way. It just tastes like a chemical cocktail right now, not a shake. It's very unpleasant. So this is the GOOD Steak & Shake in town. We eat at this one. We avoid the Glenstone location like the freakin plague. That one is rated at 2 whole stars, and is the BAD location. This one is a much better reflection of what a good experience at Steak & Shake should be. I can't imagine that they are owned by the same people. But again go to this one. read more

When visiting home in Springfield, MO., there are several places I have to stop in to have lunch or dinner at while I'm here and one is Steak 'n Shake. The burgers are amazing and since I've been going here since I was a kid, it's just a good memory when I eat at them. Today, my Mom took me out for an early dinner and we both had burgers and fries as usual. But these are not usual. They're pretty awesome. Taylor and Isabel waited on us and were typically very friendly as the staff here always are. Taylor was training Isabel and so yet another friendly soul waiting on customers working at Steak 'n Shake. My Mom even mentioned of how nice and friendly they were, so they are definitely doing their jobs. I had the cheeseburger with cheddar and my Mom went sans-cheese but the burgers were drippy and good and the slim-cut fries were perfect. I usually have the milk shakes when I'm there, but I didn't have the room this visit, but there's always tomorrow. Never disappointed here. Thanks! read more

What the hell happened to this S&S ? The first time I remember eating here I was 8 years old and had just seen John Wayne in Daktari. Circumstances required that I move out of the area for 10 years and just back I had to try one of my favorite treats, a shake at S&S. Not only was the place worn out(if it were a car you'd say broke down) the service was outrageous. My wife was going to run in and get shakes and with hardly any customers there we thought it would be quick and easy so I stayed in the truck parked to where I was looking directly into the grill area. Virtually all the staff were seated at the bar talking and paid little attention to her. A waitress did take her order, and money. So the staff is visiting and laughing, it looks like a good time everyone is having but no one is making shakes. After 6 minutes a guy moved baked to the area where the shakes are made and started. I stepped inside and asked for a refund and shared my frustration with the manager. Amazing that 7 staff had time to visit and joke instead of providing any customer service. Bottom line .......With over 500 eating establishments in Springfield, NOTICE to the OWNER, update this filthy hole and fire everyone. Your business is at risk. read more

Pitiful excuse for a good steak 'n shake. My friend & I stopped at this place & ordered two salads to go. One with light Italian dressing & the other with another kind of dressing. My friend reminded them about including the dressings. When we arrived at our destination to eat their was NO dressing of any kind. It is really horrible to choke down a dry tasteless salad without any dressing. I will NEVER return to this Steak 'n Shake & probably not any at all. Came into this location after checking into the hotel across the street. Waited 12 minutes to be acknowledged. Another 5 to get my tab. Another 15 for food. Actually changed my original desired order for a turkey club so it would take less time. The line cooks deserve all the tips in this location and truly work their hardest from what I saw. After walking across the street, my fries were soggy and cold and sandwich was 70% condiments. Will never be back. read more

This particular Steak and Shake used to be my go to in all of Springfield. As of late the service has been declining, especially as I'm writing this review. My current visit has been the worst by far. We waited at least 10 minutes to a non busy restaurant, making eye contact with both waiter and waitress and not being acknowledged. We were then told to seat ourselves and could not find a vacant table that was clean. The food was decent. Our waiter though seemed very agitated when I tried to order a shake after my meal. He also tried to get me to cash out when I was not ready making me feel rushed and uncomfortable. When I tried to pay him after ordering my shake he ignored me several times and finally he acknowledged me and when I held up the money for him he got a major attitude with me and shook his head. I work in the bar/food industry and this is not how you treat customers. I will be making one last trip here in the morning to file a formal complaint and will not be returning to this Steak and Shake. read more

We were waited on promptly, but took 15 min to get drinks and for order to be taken. It was also hard to get refills, or our waiter's attention that we wanted dessert. I had to get up to go him to have him take our dessert order. We asked for it to go due to having to wait for so long for everything else. My father and I were waiting to pay. There were 4 other people waiting to pay in front of us. The entire time the "Manager" waited on everyone in line including us, he was on a phone call with someone discussing computer problems. He never spoke to any customers ahead of us or to us. Not a hello, how was your meal, thank you, or anything else. When we got to the front of the line, he took my Father's ticket, and it the total was approx. $44.73. He gave him back $45.27, which obviously was short by $10 of being the correct change. My Father asked him to check the ticket again because that wasn't the correct change. The "Manager" still not saying a word to us, while continuing to have his conversation on the phone, shook his head meaning that he had given my Father the correct change. My Father said no, you still owe me $10. The whole time the money given back had been lying on the counter. The "Manager" then re-added it on the calculator, (still not talking to us) and tried to hand my Father back only a $5 dollar bill. By this time we were getting very upset. My Father told him again, he needed $55 back. He finally pulled out a $10 and handed it to him with a disgusted and annoyed look on his face. I proceeded to tell him as he was still talking on the phone, that this was the poorest customer service that I have ever received at a Steak and Shake and couldn't believe that he wouldn't get off of the phone or put it down to even acknowledge his customers much less take care of the problem he caused from not focusing on what he was doing. He threw his hands up in the air, gave me a dirty look, and shrugged his shoulders. Not once did he say ONE word to us. I am very disappointed and disgusted. The kitchen was also filthy!!!
