Daughter and I needed a quick bite on a road trip. We love Steak n Shake so this stop was an easy decision. We were surprised to find out 2 things: 1. This is the OG spot! It's a historic stop on route 66 and has a unique old school vibe. LOVE IT! 2. They still offer dine in service with a waiter (no longer offered in our local area. We grabbed a booth, ordered our go-tos: 444 for me w/ double cheeseburger and fries and steak frank combo for her. They do have a paired down menu so you won't see chili 5 ways of orange freezes on the menu. Shout out to the employees of this location. They appeared to be short staffed with only 3 employees working - 1 on grill, 1 waiting tables and 1 doing everything in the middle with a lot of shake making. They were still helpful and friendly. When we left there were at least 12 tables of people dining in. That's a lot for a staff of 3 PLUS takeout orders. Our food came out super fast and our service was quick.

The OG... the spot... the start of it all! This is the place to come for the original steak burger. My boys and I were up visiting my mom in Springfield and saw this location. It is the original old time Steak and Shake. Being that SnS is a new found love of my boys we decided that we had to stop here before leaving town. I wanted them to have the full experience so we went inside and sat down to soak up the ambiance, history and nostalgia. They actually give you menus at this location... they have waitresses, waiters, bus boys and all. There is a chrome counter you can sit at or you can opt for the tables or booths. I wanted to sit at the counter but my boys wanted a table... next time... we got a table. We looked over the menu and ordered a double for my oldest, the grilled cheese for my youngest and the double royal for me. My boys got shakes and all of us got fries. NOTE: one large fry is a big plate of fries!! It easily would have been enough for all of us no issue. We ended up OD'ing on fries. The royal came out piping hot, fresh and the sunny side up eggs oozed all over on my first bite... IT WAS AMAZING! my son loved his double but the grilled cheese was less of a hit. 2nd NOTE: don't order a grilled cheese at a famous burger place son! Lessen learned. The service was fantastic; the place was a hoot! My boys and I had a blast... we would definitely come again!

Came in for some quick eats last week at Steak n Shake. I noticed they've really shrunk their menu as of late. I was really craving a chili cheese hotdog, but it wasn't at all on the menu. They serve chili, they have hot dogs, cheese, and onions, so I don't know why it wasn't an option. I asked the waitress if I could get a chili cheese dog and she said no. I was super bummed and just ordered onion rings. She came back and said she would try and get me what I originally wanted. So I ordered a hot dog and a bowl of chili. When I asked for chili, she asked me if I wanted crackers with my chili (at this point, I didn't know if she knew what a chili dog was). Suffice it to say, I didn't ask for onions or cheese. But the hot dog and chili were great. My husband's meal of cheeseburger and milkshake were great. Onion rings were nice and crisp. Overall, it would have been a 3/5 experience, but I bumped it up to 4/5 for the waitress who really did her best in the end to make up for it.

    It's a Route 66 thang!

Our fave Steak and Shake in the USA! We love the 1950s Route 66 vibe at this historic restaurant, plus all the great service, fresh steakburgers and handmade shakes that Steak & Shake is known for. We recommend anyone who is into Route 66 make the drive into Springfield and stop here :) 5 nostalgic stars

In Sight It Must Be -- Just Okay. I was was a little disappointed when I got off of the highway to visit the Route 66 SNS that apparently is on the National Register of Historic Places. I rolled into Springfield on my cross-country trip with very high expectations, thinking that this restaurant would bring back memories of dining at the retro SNS on Colonial Boulevard in Orlando in the early 80's. Sadly, I discovered that this restaurant seems to be struggling like many of the other SNS stores that I've visited around the country over the past few years. If Gus and Edith Belt were around today, they'd probably expand upon the retro concept and have some old music playing, spruce up the "much less than sparkling" bathrooms; keep the counters, grill area, and the floor behind the counter clean; paint the curbs outside of the store; keep the employees from congregating behind the building during slow periods, add a drive-through window or curb service (like Sonic) and focus on overall quality control. Management can make SNS great again! Three stars out of five for "the cool factor" here, not for the single Stakeburger with cheese and the Nutella shake Takhomasak that I ordered for the road.

So thankful for this place and rescuing my need for a burger on my birthday!! Helpful staff and fun for my adult children buying "toys" out of the fun all machines!!

Super cute little chain. Perfect greasy breakfast place before the tailgate. Loved the old timey layout of the building. Server was really nice!

I love the Chili 5 ways. Burgers definitely smaller but tasty if arrrive hot..the chicken tenders are small for the price though.

Enter The Grotto west coast food. Since I lived on the west coast for 40 years I thought it was appropriate that I come to judge the West coast authenticity. This place is awesome. My friend had a Baja bowl that looked and smelled divine and I had the steak Gorgonzola salad, the meat portion was huge and the candied pecans were delicious. I might even bring my super judgmental west coast rude family here since I think even they would be pleased at how delicious the food was. We sat in a comfy booth and loved every bite of our meal, the balsamic vinaigrette was the perfect complement to the savory steak and sweet pecans. I can't wait to go back to the grotto

LOUD AF on a Tuesday night with incredibly slow service…read more I like to eat in local places while we're on the road. Read about this place being historic with a beautiful bar and lovely tin ceiling. And that is all true. Walked in and could not believe how loud the single singer with an acoustic guitar was. There was a sound engineer, working a board, so he must've thought that level was OK. But you could not have a conversation at all. I was wishing for earplugs. When we first stepped in, I considered just looking at the carved mahogany bar and going somewhere else. But, we figured it should be fast and we could endure the cacophony for a short time. We were so wrong about it being fast. There was only one wait staff working that night, and she was also behind the bar. When she finally moseys over to us, she admitted she had forgotten all about us. She then took our drink order, and the drinks came quickly. But then she literally never came back to take a food order. Watched her go to all the other tables, watched her clean off the bar, watched her answer a phone call for a takeout order, and then I finally went up to the bar and asked her if we could put in a food order. Once the food was ordered it came out quickly. My husband's smashburger and candied pecan salad were both really delicious. I am a sucker for a local food item whenever I see it on the menu, and I made the mistake of ordering the cashew chicken poutine. The cashew sauce had zero flavor and was just overly salty. The chicken was fried very tough. At least the cheese curds were good. But I barely ate any of it. Nothing but regret about this choice.

Eating in a wing back chair, at some odd table, isn't well suited for dining. But, sure looks neat. The food is ok to good: Burger : The burger was really good. Has some jam sauce on it which really works. Beef has a good flavor. The bacon was very good. . Potato soup: The soup is good....but needed far greater seasoning to have it be great. Pork Wings: Again, needed more seasoning to elevate the pork. And the dipping sauces were a bit unusual. And the Asian style sauce - by gosh did it have a ton of saffron. Patagonia side item: These potato chunks weren't much. Potatoes were nothing special, under seasoned and the dipping sauce was unusual. And so much saffron, it was way overpowering. . Is it worth going to - absolutely and the place is neat. But I give an extra 1/2 to 1 star more, just because of the neatness of the place.

I really wanted to like The Table…read more The space itself is absolutely beautiful -- one of the best dining rooms in Springfield -- and it feels like the kind of place that should deliver a more elevated, full-service experience. That's part of what made the counter-service model feel a little out of sync with the atmosphere. We first tried visiting as a group of about 12 on a Saturday around 7 PM. I had called ahead and was told they don't take reservations, so we planned accordingly. When we arrived, we were told there wasn't any way to accommodate our group together -- not even the option to wait for space to open up -- so we ended up going elsewhere. I did come back later with a smaller group for lunch. The experience was better logistically, but still a bit disjointed. The menu felt somewhat scattered, and while we were able to find seating at a communal table, the overall flow felt a bit chaotic. After ordering at the counter, the wait for food was quite long -- around 45 minutes or more -- which gave us plenty of time to observe how things were running. Toward the end, I noticed tables being marked as unavailable/reserved, which made me wonder why a similar approach couldn't have worked for larger groups earlier. When the food arrived, it was good -- nothing wrong with it -- but not especially memorable, especially considering the wait and price point. There's a lot to like here, especially the space and overall concept, but the execution didn't quite match the expectations for me. I do think with some adjustments to service flow and consistency, this could be a much stronger experience.
