I don't get all of the negative reviews, but my son and I enjoyed our dining experience here last Tuesday at Noon. We waited for 3 minutes and were seated. Our server came over soon after and took our order. We knew what we wanted. The place was busy, but not full. Our food was delicious, and the bacon double cheeseburger was expectedly tasty! I did notice that the burgers at all Steak N Shakes are smaller than they used to be. The chocolate shake is still my favorite among other restaurants. read more

This is now the third Steak n Shake we have walked out of. We were going to just be an easy walk-in and walk-out to-go order. We entered and the blonde behind the register asked us to step over to the counter area to place our to-go orders. So we stepped aside and she took an order from the man who was at the counter before us. Then she stood around for awhile and waited for that guy's shake to come up and brought it to him. Then a few people stepped up to the register to pay, so she checked then out. Then, a group came in through the doors, and she left us sitting there and went around to seat them. Slow, slow, and SLOW. Tried to eat there tonight and we couldn't get anyone to seat us. We ended up going to Cracker Barrel. Much better service! This place is DOWNRIGHT DISGUSTING. The food may be half way decent, just like the service you will receive here.. BUT the cleanliness at this place and the practices performed by this location actually caused me to walk out... The past couple of times I've been here the service has been awful and the wait is just ridiculous. We ordered 2 shakes and waited in line for 35 minutes with only one car in front of us. I went in and told them I have waited for 35 mins in line for 2 shakes with only 1 car in front of us. They were rude to me and said the drive thru line is 50 mins (shouldn't be that long for 2 cars in drive thru) I said maybe you should tell customers in the drive thru that the wait is that long and they proceeded to be rude. I walked out with 0 shakes. They have lost my service and I will NEVER come here again. read more

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had at a steak and shake. When we walked in there were 3 tables occupied every table not occupied had dirty dishes on them. My family and I stopped here on a road trip to Canada. We have eaten at several Steak and Shake restaurants in the past. They are all usually slower than normal in delivering food, so we were not stopping for speedy service. The burgers we ordered tasted okay but the fries were way over done and hard. Upon further inspection the floors in the dining area were disgusting. They looked liked they had not been cleaned in days. A visit to the restroom revealed it was not any cleaner. I read another yelpers review about the restaurant being dirty and wish I had that information prior to our visit. We would not visit this location again. read more

Well, it was really busy when we got here. There were 5 open booths, and it still took forever to be seated. Then it was a while after that until we got our oders taken. 20 minutes passed and we got our meals, and mine was wrong. Plus the bathrooms really need cleaned. Overall spent about 46 minutes here. 40 minutes of waiting and 6 minutes of eating. The only thing I can say is that the food was good. read more

Passing though on a road trip and extremely disappointed. Our drivethru lady sounded miserable and the food was worse. Cold, barely cooked fries with no salt. Also the bread on the 2 burgers we ordered was soggy and the overall temperature of them was Luke warm. We were afraid to eat it in case it had either need sat out too long or not cooked long enough. This was our second and last time to visit a Steak n Shake in Indiana. First I have to say the service was awful but not due to our server. He was the only one waiting tables and it was quite busy. Waited probably 20 minutes to even get our order taken. The food came out quite fast my sandwich had the wrong toppings on but my daughters chicken tenders were completely raw on the inside. Unfortunately she took a bite of it. This was a desperation trip when nothing else was open - including the Bell. First of all - Steak 'n Shake has very few vegetarian options, which is a challenge in itself. The one item they have is the Veggie Melt, but I have yet to experience a tasty one. I've tried and tried but can't get into Steak 'n Shake (even before the vegetarian era). It's just not quality food - in my opinion. The shakes are the only hope for me - and they can be magically delicious. The actual food is just not that great. What is the heck is going on with the Plainfield, In. Steak and Shake located on Cambridge Way? Over the years, I've never been impressed with the drive up window service at this location. Yes, I understand the burgers and shakes are made to order. Recently, the drive up was closed over the weekend, so I went inside to order my to go meal. The line at the counter was 6 customers deep. I went to Culver's. Today, because I love steakburgers, I went to S&S. The drive up was open the restaurant was closed, why? It took me 5 minutes just to order and over 15 minutes to get my order. Nothing was posted on the door except a hand written sign with word "closed". No explanation! Are they closed for good? Is temporary? I'm just not going to waste my time with the Cambridge Way Steak & Shake. Culver's isn't that far away and their Double Butterburger is pretty darn good! read more

Waited 7-10 minutes with some others to even place an order. The place was moderately busy but not remotely packed. Grill cook finally went and found a waitress to take our orders. Flash forward 30 minutes later, we still have no food, no waitresses checking on us (multiple customers just waiting at the takeout area). Finally someone snags a passing waitress and asks if she can check on our food. She comes back with mine. "They just now finished it". But she comes from the drive through area, not where they are bagging up orders. Open the food up while heading back to a meeting I'm already late for. Fries are ice cold. Oil they were cooked in was seriously burned. While the burger itself was still warm enough to eat, the state of the toppings was a relatively good confirmation that the entire bag had been sitting there for some time. This place literally told us that they made all 10 of our shakes with the same cup and a girl with us has a peanut allergy. There was peanut butter inside of her oreo shake. Then in another, there was oreo crumbs in a vanilla shake and she is allergic to gluten. Disgusting and not safe. read more

I have gone here for many years but the last couple of time i have come i have left VERY disappointed! The wait staff is either under staffed all the time or they are poorly trained only taking care of 1 table at a time. Not helping one another AT ALL!! What a train wreck! Arrived at 130 pm on a Sunday and waited for 10 mins to be seated with more than half the restaurant open. Once seated, our wait for a server was about 10 mins. We ordered and got the four waters we ordered about 20 mins later. So after 40 mins we had only received water when we had hoped to be already on our way. It took a few minutes for food to come out and when it did I found a 12 inch black hair in my burger. I nearly vomited as I pulled it out of my mouth. I asked our server for a manager, took him 7 minutes to get out of the back and when he finally showed up he was completely uninterested in helping with the hair issue. Needless to say my party of 4 was disgusted and we left. The manager declined to take the burger off the check and it fell to the high school girl at the register to remove it. Waited almost 7 minutes with no one in front of us to get seated and only after I flagged someone down and asked if we could seat ourself. Waited over 10 minutes after seating before a waiter showed up and said he would be right with us, then went to the next table and took their order though they were seated at least 5 minutes after we were. Got our food in average S&S time which was ok, only saw the waiter once after that and had to get up and take my glass up front for a refill. We visited yesterday, 6/8/19. I should have known by the empty parking lot that there may have been a problem since it was the height of dinner time. When we entered, the wait to be seated sign was up so we did just that.. waited and waited. Finally, we were seated. The first thing I noticed was the floor. The black and white tiled floor was filthy. We should have left but my husband said we don't eat off of the floor do we? As we were seated, there were at least four large tables that had not yet been bussed. Another red flag. There was one waitress on the floor and as people approached and waited to be seated, several turned around and left. The cook was trying to help by serving and cooking. When we received our food, I didn't receive one of my sides and was merely told that they were out of it. Enough said. As we went to pay the bill I told my husband to be generous with the tip because it was clearly not the waitress's fault that the restaurant was such a filthy disaster. Through all of the running she managed to stay pleasant. Needless to say we will never return but somebody should do something to remedy the situation before they have to close the doors or somebody gets sick. read more
