My first time back here in over a year and things have really changed here. No more wait staff. Kiosks now greet you upon arrival. You order and pick up at window via most fast food restaurants. Wife had the chili five way and I had the meal for under $4 (hard to believe these days). Double cheeseburger and a side of chili. All food was fresh and excellent. Buyers beware! When through the drive through today, 2-20-23. Got two shakes one Chocolate and one Vanilla, pretty basic. Cost was $10.00. The cups weren't very big, definitely smaller than the pictures on the menu. Got home and found a the cups 1/3 full of fake whipping cream. Not happy. June 7th, 2023 was very disappointed. The first Booth we sat at was dirty so we moved to another. I didn't like ordering from the computer screen in the first place, takes too long and very confusing especially for a disabled person that can't stand long. The shakes were very good, but I ordered coffee also and she had to go make a new pot before it was brought to me after my meal. The steak burger was okay. I was disappointed in the skinny fries that went really hot. Also you got to go collect your own napkins, condiments not even salt and pepper on the table. I spent over $30 for two people I don't find that too outstanding but for that quality of food it was quite expensive. And I must say the chili mac was horrible! I haven't been to a steak and shake in probably 6+ years. I went here the the other day to try the food again and I forgot how cheap the food is. A double bacon and cheese burger with fries was around $4. The burger tasted okay, but it was really greasy. Service was okay, but was somewhat unattentive. A couple sitting near me wanted the table cleared so they had room to talk and weren't dealing with clutter, but the server never came over to clear it. They eventually moved the plates to an empty table and then a server finally got the hint so she came over to check on them. Went here last night at around 11 after seeing some friends. I got a milkshake and a burger. The milkshake was brought with the burger instead of before even though there ere three groups in the entire restaurant and the other two already had food. The burger itself was thin and greasy and the bacon tasted microwaved. The fries we're okay for shoestring cut. They we're actually perfect for fries. The servers were very un attentive for there only being 3 active tables. I'm a long time customer of this establishment! I won't be going back here it was 11:58pm and they supposedly don't close until midnight! We waited in line for 20min and they told us they couldn't serve us we had 2 young children with us too as we were watching the fireworks at the Rockford speedway! Those typically turn over faster however Bottom line: Remember you're only a half-notch above fast food here, so remember that in your expectations Side note: My last visit there seemed to be a regional or district manager there that was possibly working with a manager in training. So there were 3 or 4 levels of management present that day, and lets just say it doesn't help the experience. Personally I hate seeing corporate guys influencing the atmosphere of the public working environment. It's awkward and reminds me of retail store politics. Compared to the bustling Indiana S'nS I was in just a few years ago off I-65, this was like eating in a backward foreign country. There, we were greeted and seated in a crowded restaurant at lunchtime, given extensive menus by a waitress, served hot meals tableside, and checked on to be sure all was good. It was - portions were good sized and food was served hot. Here by sharp contrast, in Machesney Park, IL, we were greeted by signs, not staff, telling us to order from a very limited menu, pay upfront, go to a service counter to grab eating utensils and condiments, then return to the counter to pick up our order. No employee ever set foot in the "restaurant" from behind their counters or back room! Portions were small and lukewarm, and overly thin fries were a joke. It was 12:20pm at what should be the height of the lunch rush, and 2 - yes, two - people were seated in the whole place. With a Culver's down the road and many other places to choose from, it is no wonder this place is empty. Whether the computerized ordering system was created out of necessity from a shortage of workers, or just a move by mis-guided corporate management or advisers to sharply cut costs, the end result was to cut quality, the whole atmosphere of a successful S'nS operation, and any reason at all to stop here for a meal. Sell it and any others like it, and be done with this disastrous experiment. I am certainly done with this chain. read more

I have had bad service before, I've been around drunk people at a restaurant before. But what I experienced at Steak and Shake in Machesney Park, IL was by far the worst dining experience of my life. After having a couple of drinks with my friends, we decided to head over to Steak and Shake at around 2am. I know it's not going to be a fancy place, but I expected good food and at least mediocre service. Instead, what I got was chaos. We came in an were sat right away. The waitress seemed very nice and put up with our style of humor. We sat down and started to look over the menu (which she originally forgot to give us). Before we knew it though, a slew of people came in and overwhelmed the place. They were a collection of drunk people who said that they currently or at one time worked over at LoneStar in Rockford. We ordered our food and drinks and when I looked up next, the waitress (the only one mind you) was crying. The other people calmed her down and then began going behind the drink portion for water for everyone. Soon the drunk members of this group were taking orders, delivering food by shouting out orders in the middle of the place. Two people began going behind to the cooks area stumbling and laughing. They kept yelling at people coming in to go away and yelling at us to be nicer to the waitress. We were very nice to her, we barely even saw her. I can't begin to tell you how disgusted we were by this display. The health code and labor violations were numerous. In the end, our food was terrible too. I will NEVER go back to this place again. read more

I realize that I haven't given this location it's due praise. While I can't say I had a over-the-moon stellar experience, this location always did me well during the afternoon. I would generally buy several shakes for my employees and every time I've come here, they would never have any problem with serving me, no groans or attitude with taking my orders and if I tossed in some food with the order, it wouldn't be a problem. Only once or twice have I met a server that was so-so, but generally I enjoyed coming back here. Considering how many SnS's I've been to that have provided dismal service, this was a nice change of pace. The shakes also came out at a quicker-than-normal speed which again, amazing since I'm used to waiting long amounts of time for even one or two shakes. read more

Let me start off by saying yes, I know this is steak and shake. I have probably only been here a few times in my life and this most recent visit will most certainly be the last. I was not under the impression everything they serve is dredged in oil. Our fries, burgers, and onion rings were literally saugy from oil. We didn't eat any of it. Luckily their food is so cheap so we didn't waste a lot of money, but it's terribly sad that the best part of our experience was not wasting too much money after throwing away our meals. I very rarely give 1 star reviews and typically feel bad when I do. In this circumstance I do not. My only recommendation is that you Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. We went to this Steak n Shake for a Birthday treat. Was seated right as we walked in. Was given menus and within a minute our server with a smile on her face was asking what she could get for us. Within 2 minutes we had water and flatware. Within 5 minutes we had our shakes and our starters. Remaining food came out hot and in a-timely manner. Talked with Tyanna our server. Talked with Manager about the great service. Everyone seemed to work together to bus tables . Only comment I then made to GM that was there was the the floor in dining area needed to be replaced. When I first arrived my friend and I weren't greeted or seated for 10 mins. Going forward we we're seated after waiting..in an empty line. we were walked past several times without being served, they didn't even serve us Beverages. We waited for about 20-25 minutes before I insisted on speaking to a manager, About the horrible customer service they had shown. The manager was very passive about it all and wasn't acknowledging what I had to say. I was the only African American in the restaurant and I definitely could feel the hostility towards me.
