We went mainly to get the kiddos shakes. The shakes were good. The banana kid shake tasted like banana pudding so that's a win for the tiny human. I grew up with one of these close to us in Joliet Illinois and I just miss what it used to be. It was always hopping and the hangout spot for all of us late high school/early college post mall trips or after the movies. My roommate worked there for a while. It always had music going and a lively hustle about it. You used to have the big menu that had options. Don't get me wrong, I can completely wrap my brain around the why if what Steak and Shake is doing. No servers (because who can actually live on tips when your bill is $25). Much more basic menus where you order off a computer screen in the front, a pretty sterile environment overall. The fries were lukewarm but the shakes were good. The burger I would put below a cookout burger personally. Service is terrible. We ordered a triple burger and only got a double. When I went to the counter to have it fixed the girl behind the counter gave a nasty look and told me there was three patties when clearly there was only two with an extra slice of cheese. She went as far to take the burger apart and still gave it back TWICE so not only was the order still wrong, but now it was a mess. I'm not used to the service I received at Steak n Shake today! The lines were externally long, the service was slow and the food was cold! Oh yes the milk shake which is usually thick and creamy (so thick you have to eat it with a spoon) but today it was thin, loose and dripping with a sprinkle is cookies on one and a dash of M &M's on the other! Third time we've stopped there while traveling. The first two times were pretty good, the last time, not so much. There was no lettuce and tomato on the burgers. I only come here for the shakes, they are so good and are always worth the stop. Super thick with whip cream and a cherry. Chocolate is my go to flavor, creamy and thick. I gave gone here maybe a handful of times when I'm on a mission for chicken tenders. The drive thru is always super slow when I have gone. Expect to wait atleast 10 minutes. The eat in ordering kiosk is state of the art. The place does need a good pressure washing. Food is good if you customize your order. Off the menu items are below par. You must ask for ketchup for you fries at the drive thru. Fries come unsalted. Spaghetti is excellent when you add a cup of chili. Again, you MUST customize each item. I had steak and shake before many years ago and decided to give it a try today but unfortunately I did not like it. The chili was watery filled with more beans than meat. The burgers had no taste. I could taste everything but the actual meat and I only had cheese and ketchup. My shake wasn't filled up all the way but I can say the hot dog was decent. I've had more flavorful food from the frozen food section in Walmart. Also side note, I had to let them know twice that I was missing two different items. Summary: I was overcharged for a subpar fast food burger but the milkshake was awesome! A friend raved about it. We stopped in. Table service? Ok, not a fast food joint. I like the food at this Steak N Shake. Everything tastes good here. The thin cut fries are my favorite. The shakes are wonderful. Happy hour also makes the shakes irresistible at half price! The dining area is well lit so you can see the cleanliness of the tables and booths. They have a good sanitation grade. There seems to be a constant morale problem with whoever works the drive thru. Comparing this place to McDonalds is a travesty. I personally don't like feeling like I'm going to die after eating a meal; this place doesn't make me feel that way if I eat their burgers or fries. The main draws here are the burgers and the milkshakes. I had a coupon that was close to expiring so I arranged this trip. Since the one in Winston Salem is lousy, we decided to take our chances with this one. My sister and her small kids were part of this party and we didn't have any problems getting seated or food. Service was great for us and no one gave me grief over my coupon or bothered the kids when my sister asked for things for them. In fact, we showed up during their happy hour discount for drinks & shakes (2-4 p.m. & 2-4 a.m. if you're curious). We made sure to speak up about that stuff; I'm not sure if they would have taken the happy hour discount off if we'd not mentioned it. I had a double steakburger & I was surprised that it was not overly filling for me. I usually get the single burgers. Very standard fare but the milkshakes are great (though filling). Not the most spectacular location I've been to & I don't suggest going out of your way for this one but it was decent compared to the one in Winston Salem. read more

Decent burgers with a hell of a selection to choose from. Not great but better than most fast food joints. They also have a great selection of shakes as well. The shake quality is just okay (I'm an ice cream snob so I can tell the difference). If you have kids then they don't give a crap and will love the shakes. I met my family here for lunch one day and I have to say I am disappointed. The meal itself was great and the service was fantastic, until 2 pm, which is when the beverages (including milkshakes) are half off. We ordered our milkshakes at about 2:05 and didn't get them until almost 2:40 and when they arrived at our table, they were all melted. Mine literally looked like chocolate milk (I added some pictures, mine are the two of a chocolate milkshake that looks like just chocolate milk). I skipped out on the the whipped cream and my cherry sunk to the bottom, however, I am grateful mine was made right. Two out of four were not made like we asked. My dad sent his soupy mess back and got a decent milkshake. I understand they were probably busy because 2 pm is when the special starts, but you would think they would have several people working when the drinks go on sale to make sure everyone had a decent milkshake. This is our usual go to when we can't figure out what to do for dinner or we are out and about. Food is always fine. Only problem... our service was kind of out of hand. The waitress was an older woman and sat us down and took our drinks before we even got in the booth! She was amazing. But then we heard someone tell her to give her our table, which to us was completely disrespectful. A girl, no younger than us, with dreads started waiting our table, though her section was across the dining area (which had the service all over the place) and not even before our food came my fiance was getting irritated from the girl because she kept giving me glares and giving him smiles. Ok, for those who complain about the fries and food here, I think some are a bit extreme in their reviews. The food here is ten times better than any of the other fast food shops in the area. Their burgers are always fresh and everything is at a decent price. When I eat here I do not feel like I just coated my insides in a ball of grease like I do across the street at McDonalds. Yes, they do have skinny fries and that could be improved but that also helps add to the feeling that I didn't eat the most fattening meal ever, like again, across the street makes me feel. I'm not a regular fast-food-plus eater. If I want fast food I go for that and if I want mid-range I go for that. Steak and Shake is neither, it's in the middle somewhere. Essentially what we have here is expensive fast food. Sure, the quality is a touch higher than the Big Three fast fooderies but perhaps not sufficiently so to warrant the extra cost. Then again, to each his own tastes. If you're after a cheap burger, this ain't it. If you're after fine dining, this ain't that either. If what you'd like is a variety of burger options in a reasonably decent setting this they do nicely. The shakes are rather tasty and the burgers are indeed a cut above the norm. This location going down hill. Apparently the are losing money. Was told by my server that there are no refills on beverages with a snack pack. She said it is because of high food costs. Each time the service gets slower and slower and I just heard a server tell a customer, "I'm sorry, I think they lost your ticket. I've redone the order and I'm trying to get it as soon as possible." My husband and I were not very impressed with this Steak 'N Shake. The food was pretty good but the service could had been better. The waitress was pretty slow at doing her job. She had forgotten my husband's coleslaw. So, when we told her about it. She said it will be right out. This took at least five minutes. After, we finished our meal we waited a few more minutes. She didn't showed up, so the manager asked if we needed anything else. We ordered a couple of shakes (the consistency was too thin. I ordered the peanut butter cup shake thinking it would have chunks of peanut butter cups inside. No, it was a vanilla shake with whipped topping, and some shavings of a peanut butter cup for the topping.)
