The first one I went to - from memory - was in Peoria, the one right along the bustling IL River. Thereafter it was always at the top of my list if there was ever a choice in where to grab a bite to eat while out and about. The look and feel of the diner at once commanded my attention w its cool black and white 50's vibe. It also totally reminded me of the diner from the comic book Archie where he, Jughead and the gang went to eat when out in Riverdale. The look of the unique puck shaped burgers being smashed into a thin steakburger was a sizzling sight to see. It would also be seared into my mind and memory forever. "it ain't what it used to be, McGee..." At one time Steak N' Shake (hereafter S&S) was the gold standard for Burger joints in the midwest and points south. The burgers were supreme, the service was cordial and "home-y" They had a vegetable beef soup to dream of, and the fries were ambrosial. What the hell happened? I can prolly surmise accountants happened, which is the death knell for just about every business these days. Instead of a human ready to help, you now have to punch your order in at a kiosk, then find your way to a table. There should be a revolt against crap like this. The burgers aren't the juicy beefy delights they were-they taste tired. The fries were cold when they finally came out. Both the burgers and fries are not seasoned at all. There's ONE size of soft drink, which is everyone else's small, and you have to pour yourself. The throw wasn't bad-the only bright spot of the day. There were kids running all around the dining room, which is always nerve-racking. If there was a host/hostess they might have been a deterrent, but it wasn't to be. Gone are the greeters, gone are the bar seats, the servers. It's completely cashless and automated. The only people here are the people that cook the food. Inside, this place is disgusting! Haven't been to this place in several years. Came back to try their slightly revamped marketing approach including the beef tallow fries. I was very pleasantly surprised with one of the best (fast food) burgers I've had in a while! I did drive thru, and the gentleman taking our order was polite, patient, and genuinely cared about getting our order correct for 3 people. Food was up within 5 minutes, and I did eat in my truck, but I ran in for some ketchup and the place was clean and tidy. The put cheese when I asked for a steak burger and made sure it had no cheese, then when I went to ask for it with no cheese I couldn't get any help. I had to wait a few minutes till they brought the next order to finally not get ignored. They were also visably annoyed. Worst meal I've ever had, first off it took 10 minutes to order from the dumb ass new touch screen set up, after battling that, trying to find a clean table, every one of them were dirty, but we managed to find one that was not so bad, right next to the overflowing garbage cans, this place is disgusting but we're already committed to the meal, the fries were good but everything else was no good, lettuce and pickle looked like it's been setting out all day all dried out, the meat wasn't even meat, it was like burnt pieces of dried up grease if that makes any sense. i tend to really enjoy steak and shake but this time i would say it just wasn't all that! me and one of my dear friends are currently on our way home from a road-trip and we decided that S&S sounded the best. so we go through the drive through and the atmosphere is not too warm or anything so that's pretty much my only complaint. however the food was good but not quite as good as i remember so i was a little sad about that. also i don't think the lady that took our order liked us (i'm not sure why bc we weren't weirdos or anything) so we think maybe she sabotaged my friends sandwich by putting onions on it after she asked for no tomato or onion. but we drgaf so it's chill, but it was a lot of onions. read more

Steak 'n Shake has become so impersonal with their kiosk order process. I waited 25 minutes after my meal was served just to get the milkshake that was supposed to go with it. I sat in the dining room to eat, and still did not receive a glass glass for my cold milkshake. It was served in a Styrofoam to go cup, and I had to ask for the whip cream and cherry that is supposed to go with it. This will be my last visit to steak 'n Shake. Mistake ... two cars in front of me took FOREVER to get their orders. Once I make it to the window, i wait 3 minutes to be acknowledged- long time in drive through time. A young lady gives me our food and says she's waiting on my shake. 4 minutes later, she asks me to confirm the flavor and that the guy making them ( whom I can see) deleted it. This is a very low standard of quality even for a Steak & Shake. We walk in and wait to be seated. 3 waiters huddling together talking and goofing off. One makes eye contact and keeps chatting away. Finally, The lady behind the register gets freed up and seats us. Originally they were out of Coke. We asked for a substitute but the manager, who says her name is Jen, was extremely rude. We asked for a refund on our meal (which wasn't made yet) she said we are NOT getting a refund and we can just leave. We have been regular customers here for over 20 years and have not been so humiliated before. There were two gentlemen cooking and a young lady in the drive-thru. We stood at the counter for 7 minutes and not one employee acknowledged us. They looked over and didn't say a word. This my first time at this or any steak and shake but it will nit be my last. Everybody and I do mean everybody there is so nice and courteous. Not at all what I was expecting. Out server ,Shane, was extremely nice and helpful and offered suggestions off the menu etc. when he found out it was my first time he also highly recommended the milk shakes. This is a fast food place so lets not compare it too Ditka,s etc. it is fast food and it taste like fast food. But the service was unlike anything you typically get at regular fast food joints. As an example when we were checking out the cashier was temporarily missing ( my guess is she was in the bathroom-haha). The line cook seeing us waiting got involved in alerting the front staff to find the cashier,Shane our server as well as another server went to the rear of the facility looking for her as well. Point is that these people did not take the attitude that " not my job". Very impressed with the staff. Way above and beyond what one would expect at a fast food establishment and service that is expected and not necessarily found at high end restaurants. Very caring and genuine staff for sure. And always get some excuse as to why....this isn't my first time here but I like to give the benefit of the doubt before posting a negative review. For example, they seem to always be out of fresh strawberries or bananas for shakes yet they are "famous for had spun shakes" yet they rarely ever have what is needed to make them.
