I took my grandson to Steak and Shake for a cheeseburger. We are on an adventure to try several different cheeseburgers! He is six and loves cheeseburgers! We have been rating them as we go. So far he has liked them all but he liked his steak cheeseburger the best. I on the other hand had a chili Mac. It was good but pretty oily. They didn't have waiters and you had to order from a kiosk. I'm too old to think that is a good idea. The place was almost empty and I kept thinking they can't last without more traffic. Ok. I'm not a fan...but my mom loves this place. Went thru the drive thru and got the wrong sandwich (garlic which is nasty) in a meal. Returned sandwich and fries for the wrong $5.99 meal. Manager broke out the fries $2.99 and charged me for them even though I returned them (since I had to go back to the restaurant and the food was no longer warm). Food is inconsistent and there were parts of my last burger that were just downright cold. The service is terrible and slow. Most of the time we are told in the drive up to come in and order inside. The cook up front seems more engaged with his personal calls than starting meals on the grill. The floors are dirty and sticky. This was our last time coming to this location. We really haven't eaten at steak 'n Shake since Covid when they closed the dining rooms. However we giving them a chance tonight and we did the drive up thing! we were both pleasantly surprised at the fresh steak burgers that we enjoyed fixed exactly the way we wanted them. The fries were as we remembered and not only do they have a great EXTRA LARGR Diet Coke but they give you a straw fits the container unlike McDonald's! The view from our car seats for this late evening meal was beautiful. The sky was clear not too much wind. Pulled up to the drive through before their advertised close time and someone came over the intercom and very rudely said "we're closed" and that was it. I checked my time again and made sure they weren't. Didn't care to argue with some kid but do better. You stay open until your time says you're open and then you clean. Ok, 4 stars for Steak & Shake? The fact is, I ordered through the drive-thru on Saturday night. I was craving hot crispy fries and a cheeseburger. The guy taking my order was pleasant & efficient. $5 and change later, they efficiently and again- super pleasantly, handed me a little slice of heaven. I took one bite of those hot crispies, rolled my eyes, and decided I needed to give this bag of deliciousness my full attention. Pulled out the burger & took a bite. The perfect amount of flavor with just a touch of welcomed burger grease. I probably took 2 years off my life, but honestly, aren't the ones at the end worth a little pleasure now? Honestly this location was hurting for awhile. The burgers and toppings didn't taste fresh and the chili Mac's were a shell of what they used to be. That's all changed and I was really surprised!! Came in after my family had ordered online and I looked at the grill for a nice old greasy caked up and yellow steel that compares to no McDonald's or canes grill I've seen. Was left sitting for a while, but after I got my food (noting 2 customers who came in during my waiting with mixed up orders) and checked my food. 4 burgers and 3 fries. I did not check the receipt, so when I got home I found out I actually was missing 2 milkshakes. After going back, they looked through my order a second time and sent me off with my milkshakes. When I got home, my family let me know that NONE of the burgers were the correct ones. All plain single cheeseburgers and small fries. SCAM ARTISTS. Don't trust this business and don't trust the service. I don't even remember the last time I went to a Steak N Shake. It was probably at least three years ago. I know it is just barely (barely) a step above fast food but what has happened to this place? Yeah, I scored a "premium" shake for just over $2 on July 4th due to Happy Hour. It was hotter than hell so I thought that was a deal. But the ice cream they use, if they even still use real ice cream, just has no flavor at all. The floor was also really sticky. Like clearly someone spilled soda (like a whole gallon) and just paper towels were used to clean it rather than a mop. I mean the floor was really sticky. And I am not a person who notices that kind of thing or cares. There are Dairy Queens further east on 96th street and north on 116th/Allisonville. I'm sure there are some local options as well. Biglari has ruined this place. Go somewhere else for an ice cream fix. read more

They closed their dining room early as HELL. the dining hours on the door said open Friday-Sunday to 10am- 12am. We got here around 10:30.

Stopped in with my 4 year old who really had to use the restroom right away. I was absolutely appalled by the cleanliness as it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week. If it wasn't for the fact that it was a total emergency we would have left right away. They also had some sort of maintenance issue which only allowed for a limited menu. I havent been to a steak'n shake in years. I did not know it's all kiosks to order. I was expecting a regular dine in experience! I was pretty disappointed about that. The food was still good, the young guy working there was really nice but he was making food & doing drive thru, it was just him! An older couple came in & couldn't figure out how to use the kiosk, he had to help them. I remember how super busy it used to be! I say bring back the fun dining experience that i remember! Went inside to complete a take out order with some co-workers. Staff was extremely kind & patient with us as we had a hard time deciding what we wanted. I ultimately ended up purchasing the jalepeno crunch burger. Was really delicious. I only took off one star because my fries weren't full & there wasn't very much sauce on my burger. I debated between 1 or 2 stars for this location. Ultimately, I chose 1 because the experience was just really a let down for me. My fiancé and I really wanted some good milkshakes, so we chose this location because it was the closest for us. It looked rather busy inside so we decided on the drive thru. But that was a big mistake. We sat in the drive thru line for 30 minutes. No joke. We would have left but we had our hearts set on milkshakes. We finally got to the window, and then were asked to pull ahead and wait because our shakes weren't ready yet. I was surprised because we only orders 2 shakes. We didn't leave at that point because we had invested so much time already waiting. Eventually someone walked out the shakes, grumbled something about how they were short help, and took off back inside. When we went to drink our shakes, my chocolate one wasn't mixed together. It was basically just vanilla with random chocolate streaks in it. I typically really enjoy Steak n' shake but that visit was a big let down. I won't be going back to this location. read more

Someone once told me that Steak N Shake was the midwest equivalent of In 'N Out. That person was horribly wrong. I can understand the appeal of Steak N Shake. Most if not all of them are 24- hours, you can get a meal for under $4, and it's a romantic place to take someone on a first date. Ok, that last one is definitely not true, but the hours and price certainly have some drawing power. Sadly, the hours and price cannot fix the fact that the food here is subpar. The burgers here are flavorless and dull. I cannot stand their fries, as they are cut shoe string style. I don't know what it is about shoe string cut fries, but they just don't do anything for me. In the hierarchy of fries, they would be just below Hot 'N Now, or even Carl's Jr/Hardees. The one saving grace is their shakes. Throughout the year they have a "flavor of the month", to go along with your standard vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. This month happens to be egg nog (bleeeech) which I passed on. It is sad that a large milkshake costs as much as a whole meal in some cases, but I certainly derive more satisfaction from a shake, than I do any combo meal I have ever had. Overall- late nite dining options are few and far between, so this may be your only choice. As for me, I'd sooner eat a bowl of Ramen than go here for food (shakes not included). I ordered a burger that I ALWAYS get a side of mayonnaise for and I was told they charge 29 cents for all sauces (that the policy started a month ago, which is ironic because just last week I wasn't charged for it). We told the girl who took our order about the drive thru and she said it was closed because there truck was there. I said it wasn't there when we got there and she didn't say anything. Aside from that the food was good. I still love their shoestring french fries. And I ordered a grilled cheese on sourdough bread what came out fine. Service at this Steak N Shake is very poor. I went for service on July 27, 2017 at approximately 2 am after a long flight from the west coast. First, I sat at the drive thru for 5 mins without anyone greeting me. I then parked and went in to order. After waiting another 5 minutes at the counter a male waiter comes up and asks me what I want. I order a chicken tender meal and shake. He tells me that he is not making shakes this evening. The name of the restaurant is Steak N SHAKE - smh! I ask him why the drive thru is closed, since no one greeted me. He says that since it's him and two girls working that "don't know drive thru" they're not answering the drive thru (not even telling cars to pull around, or that they are closed)! I cancelled my order and left! There were only 2 tables of customers (5 people total) in the restaurant, so they were not even busy. I will not be coming back here, and highly discourage anyone visiting. There are plenty of other options for fast food in this area AND another Steak N Shake 2 exits north if you must frequent.
