To borrow a phrase, "you can't go home again." Such is the way with Steak 'n Shake. Out of curiosity, I visited their south side location last night for a meal just to see what their beef tallow fries were all about, and realized after the first taste that it was much ado about nothing. They were hot, I suppose, so that was a plus, but this wouldn't be the item that would bring me back. As for the cheeseburger, it seemed like it was having a bit of an identity crisis. Was it going for a smash burger? Something in the middle range? It was hard to say. And the cheese? It was also trying to decide if it wanted to melt or stay intact. Overall, I don't think I need to visit this incarnation of Steak 'n Shake. I'll just think back on the fond memories of the 80s and 90s (and their outstanding commercials) read more

Had lunch here today. Haven't been to this location in a while and I must say... I think this was the BEST steak burger I've ever had at a Steak n Shake! I was really impressed with the energy of the staff and the food was, I'm sure, what I would want my staff and cooks to be producing if I had my own fast food establishment. Ordered Shakes and they were the worst! Placed order at drive up window and was told to pull forward and wait adjacent to the front door. with a 12 minute (They Weren't Busy) wait finally the same employee came out with my order rambling on and on then hit me up for a tip after telling me to pull forward ?!?! We he High??? But on to the Milkshakes. Not enough flavoring to even tell what it was.. The Ice Cream used had freezer burn taste and why they even gave spoons was beyond me because they could easily drank with a straw. Color of shake was almost white... Steak N Shake is already a dying breed that is on the verge of extinction. No wonder the employees are dwindling away with it. I remember back in the 90s and 2000s, this place was tagged as IT! Now, it's a dud. You'll have to ask my teenager why she chose this place for dinner last night. I would have just rode by and did my classical, point and laugh at it. The fries, of course, are double dipped. The burger is too charred and the bun is nice and ripe. All of this, because the kids that they're hiring don't give a crap about working. They don't take pride and appreciation in the fact that they have a job. I said, "They'll be out of luck when this place closes." .... But they won't. DO NOT waste your time and money at this place. It totally blows! Staff are completely incompetent. The service is horrible. Drive thru had 6 cars waiting behind me so after 20 minutes waiting while other cars were finally getting their food even the truck behind me who was given the wrong order, which was mine! Well I am not going to be returning to this place ! My Grandma doesn't get out much and wanted to visit steak and shake. So we went. We walk in there is no one to say hi or anything.there are two large black things to order off of to be your waitress. How impersonal. So once we ordered off the fake waitress who asked us if we would like to add a tip (absolutely not) maybe I should get the tip. We even had to fill out own drinks! Another car left because of the long wait with no response. Having been increasingly uncertain about our local Greenwood S 'n S, we stopped at this restaurant off of Hanna and US31 for a couple of burgers, fries and onion rings. Wow. This restaurant has remarkably better cooks than Greenwood! The fries and rings were crispy. In fact, these were the best fries I've had at a S 'n S anywhere. The burgers were not overcooked and came with just the right amount of condiments and not too many pickles. I was impressed, to say the least. read more

I don't really see them as fast food but they surely can be a bit faster. Went for breakfast on a Saturday which they serve until 11am. Rather extensive menu. I went with a side of hash browns which arrived piping hot and golden brown and decent in quantity. The Egg Cheese Biscuit sandwich with Sausage was really good. The biscuit was hot and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Fair amount of folded egg and a nice sized piece of savory pork sausage. This sandwich also came with a potato cake. It was crunchy good and not the least bit oily. read more

We sat for over 10 minutes with nobody taking our drink order let alone food order, and as soon as they sat another family down several minutes after we came in, the server was at their table. We have only lived in this area for a couple months and there has been 5 occasions where we visited during open hours and they *told* us they were closed-even when it was daytime. This evening was the final straw though. We were in line to order and when it was finally our turn, we were told by the guy working the drive-through to "fuck off" and they turned the lights off. This place needs immediate manager replacement. The female manager that was on duty around 22:30 to after midnight on 4.20.2018 was not capable of doing here job and causing the wait time of one and a half hour of me and 3 of my friends which is ridiculous. When we asked one of the waitress are they short on staff she said manager working by herself in the kitchen and told them to not tell customers about waiting time which is really absurd. When we called her to our table to talk to her she said that she was aware of us waiting fo one and a half hour and all she did was apologize. I didn't expect much but they really just did a horrible job. McDonald's was absolutely packed so we came here. The high schoolers working were screaming at each other and we could hear it 3 cars back with our windows up. They had no cheese. They didn't give the sauce with the tenders and my burger was halfway off the bun with ketchup and mustard all over the outside. The coke tasted like feet and I have no idea what you could even do to make it taste like that, but I never want it to happen again.
