A four star with grace, rather than a three star. I was surprised to walk into this seemingly "fast food" restaurant to see a sign that said, "please wait to be seated." Wow! Not even ordering at the counter and getting a number, but a legit throwback to the old timey diner approach where the order is taken at the table. Which is great except it took five minutes from our entry in the restaurant to taking our order (or any attention). But there was the floor manager and one person waitstaff and in my opinion, the waitress was hustling and her "boss lady" was not, but the boss lady was delivering the food orders. We were concerned about the wait time since there were four or so tables that came in around the same time and the staff sort of acted surprised that lunch hour was upon them. At any rate, we did order 5 minutes post arrival and drinks came 6 minutes after ordering them and another 9 minutes the food arrived. For those of you keeping score at home, it was 20 minutes from arrival at the restaurant to arrival of the food, or 6 minutes from ordering until food was served. Which is pretty good. I noted all of this since it was a sit down and order process and I was curious how the timing would stack up on that. Under the short staffed circumstances, I was impressed. Which is why I went the extra star instead of dinging them on the initial time thing, but I will say that at first we considered bolting for another restaurant because we didn't know how much longer this was going to take. Good recovery, though! The restaurant was playing low volume country music and they have really good brewed iced tea. We were done all total and comfortably within 36 minutes and that is important for the lunch hour crowd. Even served a "to go" iced tea. "When in Rome....", so of course, my order was the signature "Steakburger, Original Double with Cheese." This features two thinly smashed steak patties, American cheese, pickle slices, onion, ketchup, and mustard on a toasted bun. Maybe they invented the smash burger, it certainly tastes like that, man is that a good burger! The meat is smashed on the grill to give a lacy, crunchy edge to the patty for what they call a "signature texture", and now I call it that too. It is made from freshly ground, higher end cuts of beef, hence the "steak" part of the "steakburger." The fries were as advertised, shoe-string, with slight crunch exterior, soft interior and cooked in 100% beef tallow. Very good, but they are all random sized, so eating them in bunches is more challenging. I was pleasantly surprised with the food and speed and can see this being a regular burger joint for us. read more

I was very disappointed when our local Steak 'n Shakes closed and we always keep an eye out for them on trips. Not only do we enjoy their Steakburgers and shoestring fries but there is a bit of nostalgia involved as we used to go to SnS occasionally when we were dating (and wanted something "fancy" ). So, we were happy to drive a few miles out of our way on the way home from Atlanta in order to dine here. Interior is typical red, black and white "50's diner" vibe (the restaurant started in 1934 and has lots of vintage black and white photos on the walls). Our local SnS restaurants tended to have a "covered in a light layer of grease" feel and this location did as well. It also had a somewhat unpleasant odor noticeable upon entering, stale grease or something like that. I was so happy they were open it was something I was willing to overlook. We were greeted and seated immediately and our order taken promptly. Service was friendly and cheerful. Food arrived quickly, hot and fresh. My garlic double steak burger (thin patties) was delicious, with garlic sauce and topped with garlic butter. Fries were crispy-not-crunchy. Ordered take our using the online service. Picked up the food and it was done on time. Upon arrival I noticed that this location was filthy! Staff was socializing loudly and focusing on their conversation more than what they were doing... barely anyone in the resteruant... couple tables. Since everyone was so distracted, I checked my food in the car and realized they provided me with the wrong size fries (ordered L, got S). Went back in and notified them, and they started getting me a large. Double checked to make sure nothing else was missing, but alas, the sauce for my tenders was absent. They gave me the new fries and sauce. While I was waiting, I also could see someone in the back grabbing a vape on and off the shelf in the kitchen but couldn't see them use it. When I got home, I opened the burger, and it was wrong , too. I ordered a single bacon with LTO and received a plain double. No cherry on the shake. I tried to call and let them know. They won't answer the phone after multiple attempts, and their voicemail is full. This location lacks cleanliness and accuracy. Everything is haphazardly thrown together. This spot is often talked about and well known chain restaurant. It was my first time here and I loved how the restaurant looked and the concepts. The menu itself is very straight to the point and on copy paper in a sleeve but it fits the look. I ordered a double bacon burger with just cheese and lettuce with fries and a chocolate shake. My other parties ordered burgers and shakes as well. Our waitresses were a little young, they almost looked like 10-12 and they were very nervous and did have some mistakes throughout the meal but I feel bad no one older and experienced was helping them therefore I think it's more of a group issue than their own fault. As far as the food the fries are very delicious and they give you a seasoning shaker that for some odd reason tastes a little like the ramen noodle seasoning but it's good for the first bites on the fries. The burger was delicious, the patties are thin and so i'm glad i got a double as usually i order smaller burgers. Overall definitely would come back for the food if i got a craving for it. Our waitress was absolutely amazing. She was the only one on the floor, big parties kept coming in, but she was on top of her game and continued to check on us. She stayed in good spirits the entire time. The other younger girl working up front with her was quite rude, however. I tried to pay a compliment to the waitress, and the young girl who was doing hostess duties at most snapped back at me claiming she was also waiting tables and the woman who actually was wasn't all on her own. I never saw the young girl come out from behind the counter unless she was pointing people towards tables to sit at or ringing people up. Ordered two burgers, bring them back to the hotel room and our burgers were inedible. The meat was literally crispy and overcooked to the point of being completely charred. The fries were stale and cold. We called to complain and just wanted a refund but they ensured us to come back and show them before they issued a refund. My favorite place for a shake and fires! This location has a happy hour from 2-5 half off shakes. So I got a classic chocolate milkshake and a small fry for $3.55 not bad. The lady at the drive thru was very kind and accommodating. She even gave me extra napkins. The milkshakes are always good and I usually can't even finish because a regular size is a lot. I ordered a chocolate and peanutbutter shake with reese's peanutbutter cups added..yaass. Today, I went back for lunch, I should have waited until 2 for happy hour. I was very sad after my recent visit. As a life long customer who grew up going to Steak 'n Shake with my parents, I am saddened to see the portion size has gotten SO small!! $5.19 for a bowl of chili, served in a plastic container with a false bottom...who approved this? I understand price increase, and sadly have gotten use to smaller portion sizes - but come on. This chili was barely 8oz if that. The restaurant I went to is still using plastic and observing high covid protocols - I can understand and even forgive that - but the to go container for the 'bowl' of chili needs to be reviewed. We walked in the door and waited for over five minutes to even be acknowledged, much less be seated. And there was no line. After being seated, our server was surprised to learn that she would be waiting on us, and wasn't too happy about it. The food itself was good. I placed on order on the app at 9:40PM for immediate pickup. I arrived at the restaurant at 9:53PM and walked to the front door. The door was locked. A blonde woman (I couldn't see her name) inside saw me trying to get in the door and told me to go through the drive through. I told her I was just there to pickup an online order but she would not unlock the door for me. I went through the drive through and had to wait 28 minutes before getting to the window. By the time I got the food, it has been almost a full hour since I ordered it. This is the worst experience I've had with a fast food restaurant. I know I'm only one customer but I saw multiple people get out of line while waiting. I would have too if I had not already had my card charged for the order. L horrible experience, we first walked in and the lady was rude. It was a little 15-year-old girl, and she said we couldn't sit in the corner because we were going to be disruptive. There was only one group of customers in there. It took them 10 minutes to ask us what we would like to drink then it took About 20 minutes for them to bring the drinks while we sat there in the freezing room with the air temperature no the fan has some dirty mold on it and the filter like we were breathing in that nasty air or we can all get sick and get a disease I'm not kidding we need a picture. Meanwhile, the other two Steak and shake employees they can't touching their face while they had gloves on while they were cooking our food they just kept staring at us and not cooking our food and then it took about an hour and a half for them to bring our food and they didn't even have our food correct and the fries were cold and the chicken was cold I need a picture of him and the milkshake made us all feel sick and then when we went to pay they had a receipt in all different mixed up or milkshakes weren't even on with our food horrible experience no one was smiling they were rude as crap. Nobody comes back around so I got up out of my seat and went to my server to tell them what I needed. My food isn't even here yet and I'm so pissed off at this garbage service. Another 5-Star visit to Steak 'n Shake! I came last night for dinner with friends and Liz was fantastic! We had a great chat with her after placing our orders and she was very personable and fun! The food was delicious and our meal was cheap! We each had burgers and a shake; I had a tripe steak burger with cheese and an eggnog shake. The burger was juicy and flavorful, the seasoned fries were zesty and savory and the eggnog shake was rich and sweet! They even sprinkled some nutmeg on top! My little girl & I arrived we waited several minutes before we were sat at a table. They only had one waitress. We were waited on after around 2 or 3 minutes & she took our order. She filled our drinks & brought them to us. Then we sat there & watched several other groups come in & a couple of couples. We had already been sitting at the table for a little over 20 minutes waiting for our order. Then after we had been sitting there for over 30 minutes we watched everyone who came in after us get their orders before us & we still had there for several minutes before we got our food. They had music blaring & my daughter pointed out the fact that it was the unclean version so lots of cussing etc & a lot of n word in the songs. It would've been fine if it were cleaned versions because several of had our children in the restaurant. We finally got our food, our fries were a little hard but still edible & our garlic cheese burgers were ok, my daughters had a little to much garlic sauce on it so she couldn't eat it ,she said it made her feel sick so she only ate some of her fries. Mine was fine so ate it. They didn't refill our teas until after we had been sitting there long enough for our glasses to be empty & my food was nearly gone, the refill was two new glasses of warm tea & no one bothered to ask if we needed more ice. The employees kept disappearing away from the grill & kitchen so when some customers came to pick their to go orders they had to wait several minutes before they were even noticed & then had to wait for their orders for several more. The restaurant was not clean , the floors were filthy, trash & food on the floors & in the kitchen area you could see burger buns under the grill & squished fries on the floor & various other things , the bathroom wasn't even that clean but it was cleaner than the kitchen area & dining room . The only waitress they had was wiping tables down & bussing them herself & she was polite. When we got done with our food we ordered shakes to go & that was the fastest thing we received out of our whole visit. We went to pay our ticket & had to wait several minutes before anyone came to check us out, they didn't have the correct change to give me so I was so done that I had to take less than what I supposed to have gotten back in change. Then when my little girl & I tried to leave the door was locked & we couldn't unlock it & the employees saw us standing there & trying to unlock it & they saw us looking at them & did nothing until I said in a tone that everyone could hear but without raising my voice , we can't leave ya'll have the door locked & we would like to go. Finally the employee came & even struggled themselves to get the door to unlock so all of including several other customers who were also waiting to leave could leave. I gave them two stars based on the fact they got us our shakes pretty quick & my burger wasn't bad. We normally like coming to this restaurant but it has gotten bad. read more

I don't understand the hate for this place in the reviews. The food here is pretty good, especially after a long night out and about. The milkshakes here are not only big, but also tasty. The burgers here are nice and juicy. Only thing I don't really like are the fries. They're like little potato chips that are annoying to eat. I got the sundae this time and it was alright. The ice cream in it was more icy than creamy, but it's passable. Just stick with the burgers and you'll be good. Best part? The prices here are dirt cheap.
