After participating in a discussion of "Best Burger in Richmond" on a friend's Facebook wall, I saw a pretty distinctive trend with the suggestions. Station 2 was the place to go for not only a good burger, but for craft beers. And you certainly won't break this guy's heart when you put me in front of EITHER of these things.
Girlfriend and I set this up as a lunch date on a Friday before running a slew of errands, and wanted to kick off the day right with a good meal, a couple of tasty beers, and a new experience. I will speak for both of us when I say that Station 2 provided all of that for us.
Walking in, I was expecting the place to be larger (in regards to seating capacity). Maybe a dozen booths, a dozen 4-6 top tables, and a bar off in the far back. Taking on an appearance of an old fire station (I mean, not to be an ass here, but isn't that where the restaurant name came from anyhow?). Rich and dark colors, concrete flooring and high ceilings. Definitely retained the feeling of an old station house. The walls had various pieces of artwork that were pretty cool to look at, and I can only guess were from local artists. I mean, I wouldn't mind owning the picture they have of the dog holding the Legends beer bottle.
Anyway, as aforementioned, this meal was planned in advance, so obviously I had been salivating over the menu selections for a few days, in attempts to come to some final decision prior to arriving to the restaurant. As always, no decision prior to arriving was made, and I still took 5-10 minutes scanning the menu. We started off with giant jalapenos stuffed with pimento cheese and wrapped in bacon. Really delicious, and a good way to start the day (for us.)
Now on to the good stuff. Tons of ways to have YOUR burger. Your traditional condiments and toppings and not so traditional as well. I went with "The Ballpark" , medium rare. The burger came out nice and pink, and very juicy. Seasoned perfectly and topped with a split and grilled amerikreiner sausage (West Virginian sausage), grilled onions, smoked gouda, & habanero stone ground mustard. The combination of flavors was REALLY exceptional. The buttery and flaky bun with the savory and slightly sweet onions with the explosive spices and juices from the burger with a slight kick from that mustard. Really good stuff. Washed it all down with an IPA from Abingdon, VA, Troopers Alley. For me, a perfect match up.
Wrap up: Craving a burger and a nice craft beer to accompany it? You owe it to yourself to try this place. With topping combinations that you are unlikely to find anywhere else, and a beer selection that matches, you can expect a unique experience with a handcrafted burger, cooked to your liking, and some decent beverage choices to accompany it. read more
