This place was such a fun surprise. The location is really accessible, with street parking available, which made getting there easy. I honestly didn't realize how much I'd enjoy playing pinball until coming here--there aren't many spots that have that kind of unique feature anymore, and it really added to the experience. I went for a Yelp Elite event, and it was great. The owner was there and super welcoming, and his staff were genuinely nice and attentive. We were given bracelets that gave us access to two drinks, which was a fun self-pour experience. That said, it would've been helpful to get a quick tip on pouring (like tilting your glass) beforehand--foam can sneak up on you fast , especially with so many people around. Because it was busy, we were also given a card that allowed unlimited access to the games, which was awesome and made the night even better. I definitely enjoyed my time here. The owner also mentioned that you can rent individual tables or even the whole venue for events, which is something I'd absolutely consider in the future. I'll definitely be back. read more

Visited a friend in San Rafael and her first recommendation was State Room! Nothing like an ice cold hazy IPA on a hot summer day. Staff was friendly and reservations were easy to make. They had huge tvs playing sports which entertained the kiddo quite a bit. Breakfast Bravas ($19): The crispy potato coins + pork + runny egg + avocado + chipotle cream = elite combo!!! Stateroom Burger ($20): Cheese is not included and is an extra $2 (???). It was stacked though and hubby could only eat half before he was stuffed! I will absolutely be back for the bottomless mimosas ($25) and I'm curious about the dirty iced chi tea ($14). With an overall yelp rating of 4.2 stars I am clearly an outlier when it comes to State Room. On the plus side? Excellent service and servers and a big menu with lots of items that sound good. On the down side? The food. I've popped in here for drinks in the past and, in San Rafael, it's a good choice. But that hamburger and fries? The flavor was MIA. If I don't finish an order of fries something is wrong and what's wrong is the same thing that was wrong with the burger: it had no taste. Neither seemed to have been salted and if I have to salt my own fries (or burger), that's a problem. Salt enhances flavor and on this visit there appeared to be no salt in the food or anywhere on the table. We ate, left a big pile of fries (blasphemy!), and departed having checked State Room off the list of places to which we'd wish to dine in again. But for a drink? Sure. read more

came here at 1130 that's about time they opened, got seated and given water as I waited and looked over the menu. I ordered a blackberry cider and some garlic param fries! so good. The waitress noticed I was running low on some ketchup and brought me another. super kind. I was waiting for a guest and I remembered I was running out of time on the meeter. I told the waitress that I had to run out and feed the meeter. She was beyond kind about it. The service and atmosphere was great! They had good beats playing but not too loud, but just enough so you could eat and hear the conversation going on. 3rd time coming here but the last 2 were pre-baby so doing this review again but in a different light. First off: venue is really cozy and family friendly, there are magnet board available for children to play while waiting for food. There is also a shooting machine game available if needed more entertaining for younger ones. The menu has quite changed but still good and tasty! I used to order their garden risotto and i didn't see that anymore so I ordered their garlic noodles with prawns. It was very tasty! Big serving too! Hubby got the burger with smashed avocado and it comes with a side, he chose salad! Kids menu is a bento box! My daughter had mac and cheese, which includes: apple slices, carrots, juice/milk, fries and a chocolate chip cookie! My hubby was impressed how the kid's menu was presented... We shared a warm strawberry crumble with vanilla ice cream for dessert! The most important thing was that the service was fast enough that my child did not yet finish coloring the coloring sheet that was provided for her when the food came! Pretty awesome! It's been so long (8 years!) since I've reviewed State Room that Yelp no longer gives me the option to update my old review. Anyway, 8 years later, bumping up a star after finally having a State Room burger. Best burger in Marin*. Perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. I've been disappointed by the simple burger in many otherwise fine Marin restaurants, so this was a particular pleasure. I also love the kids bento boxes! And the kids cheese pizza is just right (I'm looking at you Waterfront on the Embarcadero, where a kid's cheese pizza is merely crust and cheese). We tried to make reservations for the patio (we were bringing our dog), but State Room only makes indoor reservations. The staff member I talked to said there would be no problem this time of year (February). We got lucky and got a table for six, but the outdoors soon filled up--even at 7 (late for the suburbs) in February. It's nice to see a lively downtown. Coming back soon for the brunch cast iron cinnamon roll! *best sit-down restaurant burger. Super Duper is best "fast" burger. read more

Fun place, with an upscale but casual pub feel. We sat at the bar since seating was limited to the outdoor patio or a high top without reservations. Their housemade beer is pretty good- we had the Lizard Juice IPA and Franklin Town IPA. We shared the dumplings small plate and they were excellent. However, the tuna in my poke bowl was surprisingly tough with little sauce, and I ended up not eating some of it. We also ordered the bibimpop, which was delicious. Service was really good, too. Good beer, great burger. This was the first place I went after the pandemic because I was craving a beer and a burger that wasn't made in my back yard on the grill! We ordered a variety of dishes and they came out in a timely manner. Cubano: on the heavier side for a sandwich. Unique flavor and crunchy bread. Calamari: I was particularly excited about this dish as we were in a harbor city. However I felt the breading was what saved the dish and the actual meat was not amazing. A little disappointed. Margarita: Yummy classic thin crust pizza. Beer flight: My partner is a beer enthusiast and particularly liked this flight. I personally liked the special (a cider) for its sweet flavor the most. We had some drinks and light eats on the patio here the other night and had a lovely time. They have a covered/enclosed dog friendly patio which was very convenient as I always have my dog with me. Our companions ordered a Paper Plane and a La Machetita and the Paper Plane was so good we had to get another round! I took advantage of the fact that it was pint night and snagged myself a Patriot Pilsner for only $4 which was really good. I also ordered garlic fries (which came out as plain fries, but we got it taken care of in the end) My husband had the dumplings and really enjoyed them. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the patio. It was dark and fairly quiet with only a few other patrons outside and although they have heaters on the patio it wasn't quite cold enough to turn them on. It was crisp and in our coats the temperature was just right. We were able to sit and have a nice catch up session. If that's not your vibe, the interior was bright and bustling so you have options. The bowl was a good portion but it was a bit too sweet for me. If it was a bit salty too, that would have been so much better. I rather have this dish at a poke place at a cheaper price. Love the bartender Rhiannon!! She makes a mean margarita and serves up excellent cocktails with amazing banter. The food leaves something to be desired. Ordered the heirloom tomato salad which was on the specials, thinking we'd get juicy, sun ripened end of the summer goodness but we were sorely disappointed. For $17 the cardboard supermarket tomatoes topped with a smidge of burrata did not inspire. The mushroom pizza was a good deal but very dry. Excellent food, excellent service, every time. We've been here at least 10 times and have consistently enjoyed it. We've brought friends and relatives, and each one has loved the place. Menu is varied: noodle bowls, wood fired pizzas, crunchy chicken sandwich, calamari...and they take a "burger" to a whole new level (our family unanimously says it's the best burger we've ever had). And if you like beer they have a great selection there as well. I recommend the altered state - but at 9% only one! We also love the vibe: you can come casual or polish up! High ceilings, wise lighting, strategic booth walls and level changes make the place seem larger than it is, yet cozy at the same time. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting the owner Matt today. Next time, I'll choose the outdoor patio haha. I sat indoors on my first visit. Since I was in the mood for seafood though, that's what I went for. Got myself a half dozen oysters, the bang bang calamari, their soup (seems like vegetable chili? Surprisingly a large serving!) and a "View from the Top" (think virgin mojito but with lemongrass added). I think the sweetness of the drink counterbalanced the saltiness of the food so it was overall pretty good. We paid almost $65 for one glass of wine, one Diet Coke, one appetizer (Brussel sprouts), and the shroomin pizza. The pizza was incredibly bland. I was hoping for rich and creamy with big umami flavor. I got nothing. I didn't have the texture of a creamy bechamel, and I didn't taste the distinct flavor of white truffle oil. I feel like our pizza was drizzled with canola. It also was minimally cooked - too soft and didn't have that right pizza crust. The Brussels were soggy with a broken sauce. I would have liked more sauce on the green beans and a bit more crunch, as they were on the softer side but that's just a personal preference. We came here on our way back to our airBNB after a day hiking and exploring Muir Woods. This was not our original plan, but the electricity was out at our first choice and we had to change plans. We are glad we did, because it was a good stop. We got a selection of pizzas and the sticky ribs. They were all good, although I would pass on the Chicken N' Bacon one as it was just okay. I think the pesto was our favorite of the ones we got. I would say the price was definitely on the higher side for what it was, but the service was good, the beer was cold, and we were able to sit down and enjoy dinner after a long day, so it was worth it. read more

Met up with a couple out of town friends for lunch. Location is great and they have some nice outdoor seating but the indoor ambiance was perfect for our casual mid-week meal. The string bean app was a great starter, good flavor and paired well with our beers. Burgers are fantastic, a lot of umami goodness, quality meat, and just really fresh ingredients, plus they lightly grill the top of the bun, always a sign of a legit burger. The fries are very good, almost like a less greasy and crispier McDonald's shoestring fry. One person got the seasonal winter apple salad I believe, and thought it was one of the best salads he's had in months. No one had anything bad to say, and service was on point. Very atmospheric, steam punk bar. A little disappointing for a meal. State Room on 4th Street in San Rafael is a popular spot. Personally, I'd enjoy it next time more for cocktails rather than a full meal. Our first visit, a late lunch, turned out to be expensive: over $100 for two people with one beverage each. Our plate of 6 oysters rang in at $22, towards the high end. The truffle stuffed eggs topped with fried leeks ($5) offered a meager portion, two halves, which were pretty salty and didn't taste of truffle. A garlic noodles bowl was hardy, but overpowered with garlic flavor and fishy tasting shrimp. This dish was priced at $25 at lunch. We had a kale salad ($15) called the East/West that lacked a protein but had nuts and some spicy jalapenos tossed in that gave a startling crunch. It's a salad we wouldn't order again. We had a non-alcoholic kombucha tea and a tequila house cocktail called the La Guera, made with coconut milk, that looked pretty, but wasn't terribly flavorful. We enjoyed the friendly staff and the bar area with it's beautiful dark space, it's popular (and makes the "Best of Marin" lists) but for us State Room felt less a gastropub, and more a happy hour spot. read more

I loved the atmosphere of your restaurant. Definitely my style. We did not get cocktails this time. But the bar was fully stocked with everything imaginable. And our server was amazing! She was very courteous, polite, and attentive throughout the whole experience. I'm very sorry, I did not catch her name. Sometimes I am leery of eating out trying new places. Some restaurant food can upset my stomach. But I could tell all the ingredients in the margarita pizza were very fresh and healthy. Great place. Tried it today, it did not disappoint. They have a dedicated gluten-free menu which was great for my wife who has celiac. The reason I'm writing the review though is because the Cubano sandwich was FANTASTIC. They're close enough to Sol Food that they better have a damn good one to compete, and boy does it deliver. Nice lean pork that is incredibly flavorful, great quality ham, pickles that are too flavorful alone (for my liking) pair beautifully and mellow out the mustard. The whole thing was wonderfully crafted and delicious. I added their lovely caramelized onions which gave more depth to an already awesome sandy. Great Caesar salad too, which came with.
