I have been to the State Arsenal, also known in Providence as the Benefit Street Arsenal a few times for events and community gatherings.
The Benefit Street Arsenal shows a Greek Revival architectural facade. The building is a rubblestone, stucco-covered box, and it presents Benefit Street a giant, hobnailed portal as a pointed arch between crenellated towers with slotted.
Lancet windows fortified by iron shutters line the side elevations. There are several bronze tablets placard on its front walls with remembrance of several past wars.
The building originally sat one lot south of its current location, where its parking lot is today, but was moved in 1906 when a railroad tunnel was built under that site.
As of 2008 the arsenal was in use as the location for the annual presentation of the Order of St. Barbara to soldiers of the 103d Field Artillery Regiment of the Rhode Island National Guard. It also serves as the headquarters of the PMCA (the de facto 103d Field Artillery veterans association) and houses a diverse collection of military artifacts. read more
