I have been using these guys since the old location and always had great work done. I build PCs and laptops and sometimes I just do not want to F with certain problems. They always do it better than I would have, faster and for a reasonable price. It isn't Best Buy or Geek Squad so I get that it might be a bit more intimidating to walk into a retail place that is very specific and may be out of your realm of knowledge. Kind of like going to a garage to get your car fixed not knowing about cars. I have never been overcharged, fed bogus info, etc. and they do not know I am a builder. I walk in like Joe Schmo. Do not take your IPhone 7 here for screen replacement. Was happy at first it was only $80. You get what you pay for. Had to return 1st time because the phone was butt dialing everyone after it was replaced. While there to fix was told they didn't have the parts to repair but there other store did. Had my son-in-law take it to the other store the next day. When he returned with the phone my granddaughter discovered her home button was no longer working. My daughter returned the following day to be told we signed a waiver that the home button could be damaged during repair and that they are not responsible. But the work order I signed from the first store did not state this about the home button as did the blank work order the showed my daughter at their 2nd store. All this occurred well within their so called 14 day warranty period. So apparently there is no warranty on their work. So thanks Star Tech for damaging my granddaughters IPhone 7 that in order to fix properly now I will have to pay a $200 deductible to replace because I do have insurance and after the fact found out I had a $50 deductible to replace the screen. read more

They were fast, inexpensive, and did what has proven to be a good job on my iPhone repair, even having on hand everything they needed to fix what I'm told elsewhere is a very outdated model that Apple no longer supports for service. So, yeah, no complaints. read more

These people have no idea what they are doing. I took my laptop there because it needed a new fan and new hard drive....They charged me $250 dollars (after dropping it from $395) and said they needed to order the fan and that would take 3-5 days....2 weeks later and they said it was fixed....Well, it wasn't....The screen kept going black, but the fan was repaired..So, I took it back the next day and waited another week and still nothing...They finally called and said it was ready....guess what? Still was fading to black....took it back the next day again....So, after another week and another bunch of excuses, I picked it up and got a refund...They did keep $50 for the diagnostic fee, but they are now saying that it needs a new mother board, after weeks of saying they were doing extensive testing on it. Do NOT take anything to these people....James, the manager, does not communicate at all and some of his employees are very rude and hateful. You know they are trying to rip you off when they start the price at $395 and then go down to $250... I only gave it a 1 star rating because there wasn't a 0 to rate it. read more

In yhe past I have recommended this firm as a honest place to do business. My son in law required his game pc to be repaired and I recommended Star Tech. He took in a spare drive to be used for his failed drive. This company gutted the pc refused to return the spare drive or the failed drive and kept his DVD.CD RW drive. I will not recommend this site to any of the City of Austin IT staff as I have in the past I have spent ver 30 years in mini and micro computers and never experenced any dishonesty such as this compny. read more

Brandon was great. Customer service was great. Turn around was fast. Price was perfect. My wife dropped and damaged her laptop. We could turn it on, but it did not function. I went to Best Buy and bought a new laptop. I asked their Geek Squad crew how much to salvage the files on my wife's old lap top and transfer them to the new lap top. They said anything over 12 GB (which is basically a few movie and song files) was a minimum of $160 with no guarantee that it would work. He further said that if they ran into trouble salvaging the data that it could run as high as $500 or more! I ended up taking both laptops to Startechpc. They were able salvage everything except one small file and transfer it to my wife's new computer. She began crying with joy because we had all of our 10 month old baby's pictures and movies on the old computer. They had it done in two days at a total cost of $75. He then said he could remove the old computer hard drive and give it back to us, and he would discount our bill from $75 to $50 if we gave them the old computer. Perfect! I was going to throw it away anyway. So my total bill from Startechpc was $50 and they salvaged all but one small file from the old computer and transferred everything to the new computer. If I ever have computer issues in the future, I'm definitely calling these guys. By the way, the inside of the store may look a little shady or disorganized, but don't judge a book by its cover. These guys have helped me for years, and have met James, who I believe is/was the owner. I've had many, many repairs done there. They've always done a good job at a great/reasonable price. My only complaint was one time they advised me to use the AVG virus protection, and it didn't work for me. Over about 15 years, they've saved my data on two computers, they've generally been cheaper than the competition (which was for the early years a now-defunct major chain). I do run virus protection, am quite computer literate. I have repaired some computers, and replaced parts, though never a laptop, and sometimes things are just too major for me. I have bought a computer from them too, and it worked well. They stood behind it when there was some technical trouble, and generally I've been impressed. I have a Ph.D. in Physics, and a M.S.E. in E.E., but only that computer experience which one gains through doing those degrees (and messing around on your own). Sorry about all the bad reviews. If I had run into the same experience as Jason C., (11/4/09), I wouldn't have come back. But, they've been good to me. read more

This place is a total waste of time and money. They deserve ZERO Stars!!! These are total scam artist. They will take your computer, hold on to it for days, then when you come pick it up, they will have added all sorts of extra charges that you never agreed to pay. If you refuse the repairs, then forget about ever getting your computer back. You are pretty much out of luck. There is absolutely no one in the store that knows the meaning of the word customer service. If you want to truly repair your computer then go somewhere else. If you want to waste your time and money AND end up with a computer that is in worse shape than it started out, then these are your guys. Heed this warning .. ***WARNING - STAY AWAY*** I made this Yelp account specifically to warn others to stay away from these people. Read on if you want the details... After seeing their commercials on TV I brought a 1yr. old laptop in to get the motherboard replaced because I was lazy and didn't want to do it myself. Worst mistake I've made in years. Had I been an average consumer and was computer-illiterate I would only have complained about the 5+ week wait to get my laptop back. That's why there are people here on Yelp giving these people more that 1 star. That or the good comments here are by the owner using shell accounts. You see I'm an Engineer and have worked for a large processor manufacturer here in town for the past 15 years. In addition to my degree, I have multiple certifications for PC troubleshooting, building, repairing, configuring, networking, etc., so I know my way around a PC, laptop, or server. When i dropped it off to them I told them the keyboard was not functioning correctly and the system will only boot into the manufacturers troubleshooting tools and not into the operating system. I was told I'd receive a call with a diagnosis and estimate, I get a call a couple days later from them to inform me that the motherboard had been shorted out by something being spilled on it and that they would have to order the motherboard. They said nothing about the keyboard so I assumed it was fine. They quoted me a rather high estimate, imo,..about half the cost of what a new laptop would cost but since the system wasn't that old I decided to go ahead with the repair. Weeks go by and after repeated calls to them the only answer from them was that the part had been ordered and that they didn't know how long it would take to receive it which tells me they were getting it from China. For those of you that don't know, that's just how China is. It can either be really fast or really slow depending on the mood customs is in. Fifth week comes and I get a call from them telling me I now need a new keyboard and it's going to cost an additional $50!!! You'd think that when they regressed it and found that since something was spilled on the motherboard that maybe the keyboard was also effected? Makes sense right?..well not to them. So fine,..at this point i just want it back already so I give the go-ahead for the new keyboard. A few more days go by and I finally get a call telling me it's ready, YAY!! At least that's what I was hoping for. Go in, pay money, leave with a working laptop. Unfortunately when i got there the back panel of the laptop was falling off and when i removed it to realign it I noticed that the 2 sticks of memory I had put in it now magically changed into 1 stick of a different manufacturer and of lesser size. I had mentioned this to the guy working the desk and he immediately went in the back for a couple minutes then came back with a sheepish grin on his face telling me how sorry he was and handed me my original memory sticks which i put in. I tried to then place the back panel on but noticed that most of the little tabs that hold the panel on had been broken off so the panel barely stayed on. I was pretty pissed off that these guys tried to pull a bait-and-switch on me and when i asked to speak to the owner I was told that he wasn't there. I then asked for his phone number and was told they weren't allowed to give it out. That basically tells me the owner has stopped caring about his customers. Probably because he gets so many calls complaining about his work. Got the laptop home and finally just used some tape on the back panel to keep it from falling off every time i picked it up. It works now but i will never go back to this place and warn you to not go there as well unless you like frustration and bait-and-switch tactics. read more

DONT TAKE YOUR PC THERE FOR REPAIR. I took my DELL PC in for repair. They seemed to be only repair shop open on Saturday and that was my lure. My DELL PC had never been in for repair and that Saturday it wouldn't start. I took in on a Saturday and it took 5 days to come out of the shop. They said it was the power supply. The power supply is loud and probably cheap. It was when I bought a new printer a few days after the PC was out of the shop that I realized that my DVD drive was missing and that my other driver a DVD RW was not working. I took it back in and they said the DVD RW needed to be replaced and that well the computer never had another DVD drive. Basically it was all my issue. They were $$happy$$ to repair my DVD RW - but I don't trust them and now I have computer issues. I failed to read YELP prior to going. DONT take your PC there. read more

When I bought a Groupon for StarTech PC, I was excited to get a tune up for my laptop, but when I called them, I was told they didn't do tuneups, but I could pay $100 for the first $150 on a repair. If ever there was a need for ZERO stars, it would be this place! My hard drive kept overheating so I called them because I'd met the owner who said they were faster and less expensive than other places. I was leaving for vacation in a few days so the "fast" part sounded perfect! My computer was dropped off by my fiancee mid day on a Wednesday and I heard absolutely NOTHING from them. At around 10 a.m. the next day, I literally had my phone in my hand to call and tell them not to even bother when they called to say I needed a new hard drive. They could install a new one and transfer all of the data for around $300. I SHOULD HAVE JUST SAID NO THANKS AND BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER but I didn't because I thought it would be easier than starting over. They did not tell me that I was going to have to re-install every program, driver, etc... I told them I needed my computer back by 3 since they'd already had it since the previous day. No problem they said. When my fiancee got there, guess what - they hadn't transferred anything, but they sent him home with an external drive and emailed me "easy instructions" to do the transfer myself. This did not work. So, I had to wait a week and a half until I got back (and borrow a computer for my trip). I gave the computer to the owner at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. I NEVER heard from him again that whole day. It wasn't until almost 6 p.m. the NEXT day that he called!! It took them 2 whole days to do the transfer, but I was jut going to easily do it myself at home in a few hours (after paying them almost $300!!). Throughout this whole process, the owner KEEPS blaming my fiancee for coming to pick it up. HELLO!! If you had told him what was involved, he would have left it there. I mean he literally blamed it on my fiancee at least a dozen times over the 4 times I talked to him throughout the process of getting it in there and out again. Now I have it back and have spent COUNTLESS hours re-installing programs. I still can't even get iTunes because whatever they did to my computer, I no longer have administrative privileges. Oh, and he also didn't warn me that I'd need my Microsoft Office code to reinstall that. I DON'T have it!!!! Had he told me this up front, I would definitely gotten new computer. Horrendous customer service, terrible communication, and shoddy repair work. CALL ANYONE BUT THEM TO "FIX" YOUR COMPUTER!! Oh yeah, almost forgot, they didn't give me back my power cord. When I called about it, he said, "Oh, YOU didn't take your cord, I guess we can get you a cord." SO RUDE!!! And it wasn't my cord I got back. read more

I spilled hot tea on my laptop and they had to replace the motherboard, the price was reasonable and fair and only took a week or two..then my husband stepped on my laptop and broke the screen, they fixed it, it was not under warranty - it's a lenovo X1 Carbon.. they got the replacement part and again fixed it in a good time.. they were honest and I would use them again. read more

Clint has successfully removed two viruses over the last couple years - the F.B.I virus, most recently. At my request, Star Tech also cleaned my system of McAfee (which I HATE!) and installed Avast! (which I love, especially after they muted the "Update Lady" for me.) Clint also tracked down a Windows update that was disabling Java, and got that taken care of. Did a total cleanout of everything, and recommended I get off Internet Explorer to Mozilla or Chrome. My computer's so peppy and perfect now, I think it's better than when it was new (4 years ago.) I took my laptop in on Oct 28, 2011 because I could not open JPG attachemts in outlook. They called the next day and told me my hard drive was failing. I picked up my computer, paid them $50 and went to JustAnswer.com and paid them another $15 and they resolved my issue in less than 15 minutes, and my computer works perfectly. read more

I had to keep dropping off an I.B.M.ThinkPad they sold me because something in my O.S. was causing applications to crash. Each repair seemed to count down no more than 72 before the next malfunction. A friend of mine from Hyde Park Gym, whose company refurbished pre-Lenovo ThinkPads for non-profits' use, struck up a conversation about my constantly having it with me at the gym, on the way to/from STPC He said, "Tell S.T. this happens with ThinkPads: The bios are vulnerable to malware and a lot of times, something will be "hiding" in your O.S. when they think they've fixed it. it will detect the repair and attack another application. They need to back up your files and reinstall the O.S." I relayed his advice accordingly, but they're too bloody intelligent to follow anybody else's advice. I told Star Tech that if they didn't think they needed to reinstall my O.S., their alternative strategy would have to be no less effective in resolving the problem; the next time I brought it back would be for a my $650, not another exhibition of their Special Olympics drool-and-diaper approach to their profession. "We don't offer refunds", they attempted. "Mugging victims don't 'offer' their wallets, either; they simply recognize that they're in no position to dictate compliance. The only difference here is, a mugging victim doesn't have MY money in their pocket, Well, they decided to offer me $550 credit to my debit card plus some free peripherals rather than risk the computer having something else crop up after I take it home. Given their inability to diagnose the problem with my computer and fix it for good, they showed remarkable cognitive skills in deducing a veiled threat. Like good little assault victims, they exhibited the appropriate self-preservation measures. They swiped my debit card and the funds took 3 days to post. I'm not blaming them for THAT; banks take longer to credit than debit. Only then did I log onto my email, at another store, on a computer I was interested in, and find my buddy's offer of $600. Cursing my luck, I attempted the purchase of the new machine but the transaction declined; the $550 hadn't yet posted. I called my friend and verified the offer still on the table and asked S.T. to stop payment on the $550 since it wasn't in my account yet, and give me the I.B.M to sell for the $600. Somewhere along the line 24-72 hours after I bought the new computer and put the left-over balance from $600 on my card, the $550 posted because instead of properly executing a Stop-Payment-Request against my transaction Star Tech's strong point seems to be simultaneously unbuttoning their trousers and tripping over a rock, leaving their hindquarters presented in the manner of a turned-out prison fish that owes canteen and doesn't want to go to 23-hour-seg. But, in keeping with their turned-out prison fish nature, they punked out and reported the $550 to Austin Police Department. When I went to court, I showed the judge the transaction record on my debit card. The credit swipe at Star Tech, the preauthorization and decline on the second computer, the deposit of the remaining cash balance following the cash-purchase of the computer and the delayed credit of the first $550. The judge realized that they couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that I knowing kept the $550 for all of my troubles with Star Tech and voided the criminal charges, leaving in place a civil judgement. But she said Star Tech swore an affidavit representing their loss to be $870, not $550. So Her Honor set a date for a Differed Adjudication hearing because the pussies didn't even appear at my court date. They also punked out of the subsequent hearing because they knew their transaction records would match the $550 on mine and potentially face charges of making false statements. The Probation Agent at the D/A hearing said she would have to go by my transaction record alone as the victims had forfeited the larger judgement. She also said that she'd seen people like me before that can articulate a convincing cover-up and hide behind plausible deniablity. "You meet the definition of a sociopath. Anybody can stick a gun in somebody's face and rob them. Your character witnesses said you were a nice guy who had taken care of their cats when you were their roommate and that you guessed 83% Jeopardy questions correctly. You KNEW the $550 had been added to your account and you felt entitled to retain it, knowing that you could feign ignorance of a bank error. That you can do that and have parents of kids you teach guitar to and and roommates who talk you up as a cat-loving Jeopardy nerd makes me sure you're going to kill somebody one day and that you'll go home and play the piano. I'm not dismissing your probation case on their forfeiture; I guess she forgot that Texas doesn't extradite from Denver, Colorado over a civil judgement. read more

I see a lot of low ratings here and I don't understand why. My experience has been nothing but excellent with StarTechPC. I've used them for years whenever I've had problems with a computer that I could not figure out. It generally takes 2 or 3 days from the time that I drop off the computer until the time that its ready to pick up. The guys there are super nice and competent. I never feel like they're trying to sell me anything that I don't need. I will continue to use them and recommend them to my friends who need computer repairs. read more

Sad! Sad! Sad! I am sad to see that a company I once had confidence in has made the choice to rip me off! I have brought our computers to your north store for repair for the past few years. I had felt that I was being charged fairly but recently had to bring my home desktop back as it would not boot up. I was told the hard drive had crashed, which is exactly what I have brought it in for last time (3 years earlier). It kind of surprised me as I thought it had not been much more than a year or two and I just don't use it to much since I am on a computer all day for work. I found it strange that when the first hard drive crashed I had upgraded my memory to a Tb and so when I was quoted the price this time it was higher and I had even decided to reduce the memory since the operating system was Vista and I didn't feel the computer had much life left in it, and the price was still higher than the first repair. The replacement on this hard drive was more costly even after I didn't even have them try to save any of my files! So now today, I apparently have a virus on this new computer! Inspite of the fact that since I didn't have a mouse and it is a touch screen my husband wouldn't even touch the computer. I have been on this computer to install our email drives and visited a quilting site today and now have a virus! Yes, I understand it can happen but that would mean that the antivirus program that was installed didn't catch the virus and didn't alarm like I know it should! The best deal I could get is bring it in and we can get the virus off, and that usually runs $175 or $179 Wow! But since you were just in we can give you a deal. Well color me curious what kind of a deal might I get. OH! $150. Nope! you folks will not get another dime from me! I hope someone with authority or who cares will read this email and feel moved or maybe it's just a matter of being informed that their staff is headed in the wrong direction. Over the past 2 years I have had StarTech build 3 tower computers for my company and am extremely happy with their prices and service. I had bought 2 Dell computers which had so darned many problems that I just gave up and bought parts online, took them to Star Tech and they put them into a new system for me. That was the first PC. Then they said, "hey you know, we can buy the same stuff you are getting here and we get better pricing. So next time, save yourself the hassle and just tell us what you want and we will build it for you." So I did. They built the 2nd and 3rd system. In 2 years I have not had a single problem. I also took them an Alienware Sentia laptop and they were honest about it - they said, "we've never seen such bad design in a laptop and we are sorry to tell you that the best you can do is junk it on EBay for the screen. And take a look at this website, you are not alone..." and in fact that website was literally hundreds of other Alienware laptop buyers who had been screwed in buying the same laptop, with the same problem, which Alienware would not warranty. StarTech did not charge me for their time - they said they felt bad enough that they couldn't fix it. So I really like these guys and I am happy to tell others about them. They do have some used computers in there - I have never bought one but just thought that some people might want to know in case they want to save some money buying from a reliable place. Oh and one last comment - if you DO go to StarTech don't be put off by the atmosphere - it looks like a dump! I figure that's what keeps the prices down and besides I don't want to hang out there, I just want to get in and out quickly! read more
